De colônias a províncias: os redatores do Semanário Patriótico e a crise do Império Hispânico (1808-1814) / From colonies to provinces: the writers of the Semanario Patriótico and the crisis of the Spanish Empire (1808-1814)

Chnaiderman, Lucas Soares 04 September 2015 (has links)
Between 1808 and 1814 the Hispanic Empire was involved in a major crisis, which begun by the arrest of Fernando VII by Napoleon Bonaparte. With the French invasion, a section of the Spanish people resisted to the conquerors, and amid them there was a group of illustrated that made up, before, a tertulia. Under the leadership of Manuel Quintana, this group decided to publish the Semanario Patriótico, a precursor newspaper that interpreted the military crisis as a constitutional crisis and was trying to do a revolution. Among the peninsular difficulties, the American problem was the whole time a reason to be worried and to hope. At this point, there was one of the hardest discussions of the period, which related both to the status of the ancient colonies in the new order and to how to face the growing insurgences. In the face of the political and military issues, the founding band of the Semanario Patriótico split up, not only territorially, but also politically, and started new journals. While the majority of its redactors helped do define what was the new liberal party during the Cortes de Cádiz, others frenchfyed themselves or emigrated to England. According to what we will defend along the dissertation, the group also split up about the resolution of the problems coming from the Ancient Regime and from the Crisis, developing different resolutions, not only for Europe, but likewise to the American Empire. This work is, therefore, a study of how a handful of illustrated tried to handle the crisis of the Ancient Regime in Spain at the same time as they were trying to keep the Atlantic Empire, but under new conditions, and not repeating the old structure of colony and metropolis.

Engagement littéraire et création romanesque dans l'œuvre de Mongo Beti / Literary commitment and novelistic creation in the works of Mongo Beti

Aït-Aarab, Mohamed 08 December 2010 (has links)
Two tendencies underpin the works of Mongo Beti, right from his literary beginnings in 1953. First, an inflexible, uncompromising commitment that the writer raises as a sign identifying his novelistic aesthetics and his action as a public figure. Second, a channel permitting frequently productive exchanges between “secondary prose” (journalistic and political writing, essays, political pamphlets) and fictional production. All of which means, as the hackneyed saying goes, that the man and his works cannot be dissociated and that the struggles of the former are always echoed in the latter, and transposed, at a distance varying from great to small depending on the period. Following in the steps of Sartre and thus respectful of the ideal promoted by those who defended the literary review Les Temps modernes, Beti refused to be a silent cleric. If there be betrayal, in his view, it is to be found in the stubborn refusal to denounce patent injustice and failures to respect human rights. It is this ideological and scriptural line of conduct which unites all the works of Mongo Beti, from the “Colonial Chronicles” to the “Returned to Homeland” cycle. However, since he is not an official propagandist dedicating his works to a cause that might transcend him, Beti avoids the pitfalls of thesis novels, even if some texts, particularly those of the “Dzewatama Cycle”, are weightily didactic. His works are above all the impassioned and ironic testimony of more than 70 years of African history: often painful and tragic, sometimes droll.

On the threshold of Empires: projects, circulations and experiences in the border area between the Captaincy of Rio Negro and the Province of Maynas (1780-1820)

Bastos, Carlos Augusto de Castro 24 September 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the policies concerning the border area between the Captaincy of Rio Negro and the Province of Maynas, as well as the circulations and experiences that characterize this Amazonian space. Initially, the chronological period considered includes the demarcation of boundaries undertaken by representative members of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns in the 1780s, the years of political crisis of the Old Regime, and the outbreak of the independence movements in America in the early decades of the XIXth century. In this work, the analysis attempts to cross-border relations, the impacts this space has suffered due to great changes experienced by the Iberian empires, and also, the readings, interpretations and actions generated by the subjects who inhabited this Iberoamerican frontier.
