A Study of Key Factors on Micro-Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Management for Indigenous Women

Abstract This Concept of micro-entrepreneurship deriving from APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation), it is said that the best method to improve women¡¦s economy is to encourage them by involving into it. Traditionally, Taiwan indigenous peoples had always earned their living by farming, foresting, fishing, and herding as primary industries, which relatively caused tribal society an inferior situation and low income. With recent years of social, industrial, and educational change in structure, the development of knowledge economic gives indigenous peoples an option to start their own enterprise, or chances to serve in all walks of life. On the other hand, our government also makes every effort to popularize to start a enterprise and provides plural entrepreneurship loans. After effective guiding and assisting, a number of entrepreneurships grow by 3000 to 5000 cases per year and have higher portions for women. In 2006, entrepreneurship for women is up to 44.9% and not far from 55.1% for men. From 2002 to 2006, Council of Indigenous People, Executive Yuan had issued 822 loan cases in total from Indigenous People Developing Fund, whiled 346¡]40%¡^ were for women. Therefore, entrepreneurships for indigenous women are growing in market. In Taiwan, about one hundred thousand small and medium-sized enterprises establish every year, but only twenty thousand exist. Low capitalization and less-than-five-people micro enterprises turn over faster. Entrepreneurship is easy, but holding achievements is hard. Council of Indigenous People, Executive Yuan had selected 14 successful indigenous women in 2006. This study, thus, focuses onindigenous women who have their own business by using In-Depth Interviewing and ATLAS.ti software. And we get the result that the key factors for indigenous women in entrepreneurship are keeping practicing and possessing great sense of mission for indigenous culture. We have demonstrated with figures of network. This study finds that when surveying their experiences and progress, responders recalled the major problems were lack of entrepreneurship capitals (mainly), lack of turnover capitals, lack of managing experiences, and lack of adaptable talents. Some would think that government is not a helper but a barrier during entrepreneurship progress. In the future, government should let it as a mirror when driving indigenous policies.

The education of an indigenous woman: the pursuit of truth, social justice and healthy relationships in a Coast Salish community context

In 1951 British Columbia public schools opened their doors to First Nations children furthering federal government goals of assimilation. First Nations learners entered provincial public schools as a "billable commodity" while newcomers flooded British Columbia seeking opportunities in a province rich in natural resources in forests, mines, fisheries and land. Sadly the public schools' curricula contained colonization history but no curriculum to describe First Nations existence and history. Locally, there was no recognition of the existence of the Coast Salish people as distinct and prosperous Saltwater People. The indifference to the history of indigenous peoples left newcomers with gaps in their understanding of First Peoples Hostilities and resentments grew as immigration multiplied the numbers and pressure of homesteaders encroaching on traditional indigenous homelands paired with increasing intrusion and restrictions under the Indian Act and shrinking of traditional territories to small contained reserves. / Graduate

Este trabalho pretende compreender como se dá o Processo de Nascimento entre a população indígena Pankararu de Pernambuco, tratando principalmente dos cuidados e itinerários a ele associados, a partir da experiência de algumas mulheres indígenas. Para isso, será feito o exercício de olhar primeiramente o contexto e cultura indígena locais, considerando suas relações com os encantados e a sociedade envolvente, principalmente com os sistemas oficiais de saúde disponibilizados pelo Estado. No contexto Pankararu, o nascimento envolve tanto os conhecimentos e práticas biomédicas e indígenas, como a utilização de remédios do mato, passar pelo atendimento pré-natal, a realização do parto domiciliar ou hospitalar, além do batizado em casa. Para esta pesquisa foi utilizado o método etnográfico por meio da observação participante e de entrevistas semiestruturadas que viabilizaram apreender alguns dos saberes locais dessa população, relacionados ao parto e nascimento. O principal resultado desta investigação foi a revelação de como tem sido a assistência e experiência dessas mulheres com relação à sua saúde reprodutiva, considerando a demanda de contracepção, a ocorrência de partos em casa e nos hospitais, o trabalho das parteiras indígenas e o resguardo para controle da dona-do-corpo. / This work tries to understand the Process of Birth in the Pankararu indigenous population, in Pernambuco, focussing primarily on its associated cares and itineraries, based on the experience of some indigenous woman. To achieve this, an exercise of looking at the local indigenous context and culture will be conducted, considering the relations with the encantados and the absorbing society, mainly with the official health systems made available by the State. In the Pankararu context, birth involves both biomedical and indigenous knowledges and practices, the use of remédios do mato (medicinal herbs), frequenting prenatal care, giving birth at the hospital or at home and a home baptism. For this research, the ethnographic method was used, through participant observation and semi structured interviews that made it feasible to grasp some of the local knowledge of this population about labour and birth. The primary result of this investigation was the revelation of how the assistance has been received by these women and their experience regarding their reproductive health, taking into account the demand for contraception, the occurrence of home and hospital deliveries, indigenous midwives and the resguardo (postpartum restrictions period) for dona-do-corpos control.

Este trabalho busca compreender as ações das mulheres indígenas Nasa da Asociación de Cabildos Indígenas del Norte del Cauca ACIN, que visam melhorar as condições e situações de vida das mulheres nos territórios de resguardo Çxhab Wala Kiwe. A partir da análise de relatos de mulheres que são líderes locais, dos documentos escritos produzidos pela própria organização e relatos etnográficos, tentamos descrever a maneira como surgiu o Programa Mujer da ACIN, como as mulheres vem enfrentando os desafios para tentar eliminar a violência contra elas (em particular a violência sexual), e a maneira como estabelecem relações com organizações de mulheres externas ao mundo indígena. Na análise, o processo de subjetivação das mulheres se choca com o contexto de guerra da região do norte do Cauca. É demonstrado como as mulheres através da história da organização indígena foram consolidando ferramentas e formas de organização no interior do mundo indígena não só para promover a visibilidade do trabalho das mulheres nas comunidades, como para exigir o fim da violência contra as mulheres e seus direitos particulares, promovendo a formação para a participação ativa nas ações coletivas da comunidade. Essas atividades são desenvolvidas a partir da posição comunitariamente assumida de não participação no conflito armado. Apesar disso, o estudo também mostra como a guerra termina por afetar essas comunidades. / This text aims to describe the actions which nasa indigenous women - they are part of the Asociación de Cabildo Indigenas del Norte del Cauca ACIN - does to improving situations and conditions of life of women in the reservation territories of the Çxhab Wala Kiwe. The analysis is based on different materials as follows: life story of women leaders, official documents produced by the organization, the literature review, and ethnographic account made during field work. With these materials, the text describes how Programa Mujer of ACIN emerged, facing the challenges of trying to eliminate the violence against women (in particular sexual violence). The description also shows the way these women establish relationships with other organizations outside the indigenous world through the program. In the analysis womans subjectivation processes come up with the context of war of north of Cauca. The description shows how women through the history of the indigenous organization has been consolidating tools and forms of organization within the indigenous world to promote the visibility of womens work demanding an end to the violence against women and particularly their rights. In this sense, one issue emphasized by them is the promotion and training for active participation in collective actions of the community. Despite the fact that these communities state their position of nonparticipation in the armed conflict, the analysis shows how war has an impact in these communities and these activities.

Patrícia belongs to the Mbyá-Guarani ethnic group and is currently regarded as the most relevant female figure in Brazilian indigenous filmmaking. I attempt to understand her trajectory from the standpoint of the relations she establishes with images to contribute with research on indigenous women and filmmakers and, hence, to understand the paths available for a female indigenous filmmaker in Brazil. I employ audiovisual methods to verify the passage from the representation of an ‘indian image’ – in view of representations brought forth by stereotypical non-indigenous policies – towards the ‘indigenous gaze’. In other words, by focusing on a self-represented and political image as well as on filmmaking from the standpoint of a shared gaze, repertoires, and her own experiences, Patrícia becomes the leading figure of her claims. Therefore, her work opposes the apparent passiveness which is often assigned to the imagery production relation active/man and passive/woman. She distances herself from a romanticized and exotic view (‘of the other’) through appropriations of her discourses, hence performing her own artistic agency in the production of a female indigenous cinematography. There is a tension between borders and their discursive possibilities which have originated from the appropriation of audiovisual technologies that make up hegemonic stances. It is based on this rupture that I carry out an ethnographic experience of video letters, i.e. exchanged videographic messages about a wide range of topics. In this project, they exist between the two of us to show our relationship through images and sounds. In Patrícia’s own words: ‘what I put out used to be inside me’. / Esta pesquisa procura traçar a trajetória da cineasta indígena Patrícia Ferreira Pará Yxapy. Patrícia é Mbyá-Guarani e é atualmente tida como a mulher mais relevante para o cinema indígena brasileiro. Procuro entender sua trajetória a partir das relações que ela estabelece com as imagens a fim de contribuir com os estudos sobre mulheres e cineastas indígenas e, a partir daí, compreender os caminhos de uma mulher indígena cineasta no Brasil. Utilizo métodos audiovisuais para verificar a passagem da representação da “imagem do índio” – diante das representações realizadas por políticas não indígenas estereotipadas – para “o olhar indígena”. Ou seja, com a imagem autorrepresentada e política e o dispositivo cinematográfico a partir do olhar compartilhado, de repertórios e suas experiências, Patrícia torna-se protagonista de suas reivindicações. Portanto, sua obra contrapõe-se ao pressuposto lugar de passividade que é atribuído, frequentemente, à relação de produção imagética ativa/homem e passiva/mulher. Ela afasta-se da visão romantizada e exótica (“do outro”) por meio das apropriações de seus discursos, empreendendo sua própria agência artística na produção de uma cinematografia indígena feminina. Desse modo, deparamo-nos com uma tensão entre fronteiras e suas possibilidades discursivas abertas pela apropriação de tecnologias audiovisuais constitutivas das posições hegemônicas. É a partir dessa fissura que fazemos uma experiência etnográfica de vídeo-cartas, que constituem trocas de mensagens videográficas dos mais diversos temas. Neste projeto, elas existem entre nós duas a fim de mostrar com imagens e sons nossa relação. Como afirma Patrícia: “o que pus para fora estava dentro de mim”.
