A Historical Review of Five of the Top Fast Food Restaurant Chains to Determine the Secrets of Their SuccessLichtenberg, Alex Leon 01 January 2012 (has links)
The primary goal of this paper is to critically examine five of the top nine US fast food chains to look at their history and to determine what factors have lead to their massive success. The companies that will be analyzed include: McDonald's, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Domino's Pizza, and Subway. Similarities and differences of these companies are compared and contrasted throughout the paper and clearly demonstrate how each company has managed to capture and maintain major market share in their respective food categories. Areas that are examined range from product quality to to business models to consumer psychology. A review of these companies reveals that there are specific success factors for each, and one overarching factor for all. Specific factors include, but are not limited to marketing technique, organizational structure and overall business concept. The one factor that seems critical to all is entering the market with an innovative and unique concept.

An Analysis of Pricing and Leadtime Policies within the Marketing/Operations InterfacePekgun-Cakmak, Pelin 14 November 2007 (has links)
In this thesis, we analyze the impact of the decentralization of price and leadtime decisions made by the marketing and production departments, respectively, in a make-to-order firm. We first study a monopoly environment, and find that in the decentralized setting, the total demand generated is larger, leadtimes are longer, quoted prices are lower, and the firm profits are lower as compared to the centralized setting. We show that coordination can be achieved using a transfer price contract with bonus payments, where both departments receive a fraction of the total revenues generated as a bonus payment. In the second study, we extend this work to a duopoly environment, where two firms compete on the basis of their price and leadtime quotes in a common market. We find that under intense price competition, firms may suffer from a decentralized structure, particularly under high flexibility induced by high capacity, where revenue based sales incentives motivate sales/marketing for more aggressive price cuts resulting in eroding margins.
We take the parameters of the demand models in the first two studies as constant, while estimating those parameters based on historical data is a very important problem in practice. In the last study of this thesis, we address the challenges encountered in estimating the price sensitivity of customers shifting focus to the passenger travel industry. We explore how to obtain better price elasticity estimates through an empirical study with an emphasis on the endogeneity problem, which arises as a result of the simultaneous determination of supply and demand. We show that if one does not account for endogeneity, price elasticities may induce an upward-sloping demand curve suggesting that high price produces high demand, or may be biased downward to the extent that elastic demand curves are incorrectly classified as inelastic. We show the improvement in price elasticities through an instrumental variable approach.

Uneasy bedfellows : South Korea’s state-chaebol relationsMyong, Su Yun 11 1900 (has links)
Many studies on Korean economic development exist, but few scholarly works
specifically address the relationship between the state and big business groups called the
chaebol. The state-chaebol relationship is an important aspect of Korean economic
development, but conventional analyses fail to capture the subtleties of the dynamic and tend
to moralize rather than elucidate. This study argues that predominantly negative perceptions
of close government-business relations tend to obscure the significant positive effects of close
co-ordination and collaboration between the state and private capital. It is not the closeness
per se that matters as much as the nature and dynamic of the relationship. Moreover, a more
careful look at the state-chaebol nexus reveals a relationship in flux, in contrast to the rather
static image provided in the media.
Assuming that close government-business collaboration poses serious challenges to
the economy, effective prescriptions must then be based on accurate diagnoses. Failing to
understand the complexities of the state-business nexus prevents one from accurately
diagnosing the roots of the current economic problems currently facing Korea. This thesis
examines the political factors that influenced state-chaebol relations in South Korea. The
causes and the importance of those factors are analyzed in terms of particular economic
strategies adopted by the government, aspects of domestic politics, the economic and political
influence of the chaebol and the international environment.

Behavioral economics—arguably one of the most influential innovations in economics over the last 20 years—is a research paradigm introducing psychologically more realistic assumptions into economics. A common theme throughout the dissertation is the focus on either biased beliefs, or heterogeneous preferences, or both. The first chapter serves as an introduction to some themes in behavioral economics and its implications for market outcomes in industrial organization settings. Implementation of a New Enterprise Resource Planning SystemPayne, Lacy 01 August 2014 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to upgrade an Enterprise Resource planning system that was outdated into a new age Enterprise resource planning system based centered on a scheduling algorithm. This was a key change that needed to be made to transform the company from old thinking to new. Primarily the testing of this implementation was done through mapping of processes, followed by trial and error, and finally improving and sustaining the processes it took to use the system correctly. The mapping of the processes was completed by the Process Manager as well as the Lead, Supervisor, or Manager of the area being revamped. When processes were originally mapped for the flow of the implementation, the chart was five pages. After implementation, the same processes streamlined using the new Enterprise resource planning system is now only two pages. After all implementations were complete, more than $150,000 in salaries was saved, as well as many unnecessary and tedious job functions. While continuous improvement must follow, the original objective of this thesis was met with great success.
