Case study analysis in support of front end planning on capital projectsIrons, Kyle Taylor 08 July 2015 (has links)
Many research investigations have indicated that projects have a higher chance of success when thorough front end planning is performed. Previous research efforts have sought to determine a statistical link between front end planning and the performance metrics for both building and industrial projects. The author of this thesis intends to supplement prior research with case study analysis that provides situational insight that supports business decision making of business managers and project representatives. The research conducted in this study was performed in conjunction with CII Research Team 213, Support for Pre-Project Planning. The data for this thesis was gathered through a series of questionnaires and interviews with project representatives from 17 projects totaling $1.5 billion. Case studies were written by the author, reviewed by supervising professor and project representatives for accuracy and anonymity. The lessons learned from the case studies were distilled and evaluated to uncover correlations between front end planning issues and project success. A matrix of issues was created, and along with pattern-matching techniques, project data were sorted. The conclusions were drawn using expert knowledge of the author, supervising professor and research team. The case study analyses identified several planning related issues that affect project success, including: defined front end planning process, adequate scope definition, existing conditions definition, correct contracting strategy, alignment, teambuilding, participation of owner and contractors in the front end planning process, leadership, experience, and labor availability and skill. Anecdotal evidence is provided to support the proper implementation of these issues. / text

O processo de projeto no segmento de projetos industriais. / The design process of industrial projects.Silva, Tássia Farssura Lima da 16 September 2014 (has links)
The diversity of the industrial projects and market requirements increasingly demand design process improvement. Concerning the industrial projects, a field in which there are quite few research work published, the rising demand for speed in construction, lower costs and quality assurance generate complexity in managing the design process. Through a group of case studies, this Master Thesis aims to describe the design process and analyse the design management practices performed in industrial projects, as well as to discuss the design managers activities and difficulties. The results will be evaluated in order to propose guidelines to possible management improvements to raise the probability of project success. For the design phase to be performed with the desired level of success, the information provided to designers needs to be complete and reliable. For this, client engagement from the early beginning is crucial, creating a collaborative action in order to achieve the project goals. As it was observed in the case studies, the management practices performed in industrial projects have shown several difficulties and failures, an issue that, adding to the clients lack of commitment with regard to collaboration in the process, may hinder the success of industrial projects.

Assessing the Maturity and Accuracy of Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for Large, Complex Industrial ProjectsJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Planning efforts conducted during the early stages of a construction project, known
as front end planning (FEP), have a large impact on project success and significant
influence on the configuration of the final project. As a key component of FEP, front end
engineering design (FEED) plays an essential role in the overall success of large industrial
projects. The primary objective of this dissertation focuses on FEED maturity and accuracy
and its impact on project performance. The author was a member of the Construction
Industry Institute (CII) Research Team (RT) 331, which was tasked to develop the FEED
Maturity and Accuracy Total Rating System (FEED MATRS), pronounced “feed matters.”
This dissertation provides the motivation, methodology, data analysis, research findings
(which include significant correlations between the maturity and accuracy of FEED and
project performance), applicability and contributions to academia and industry. A scientific
research methodology was employed in this dissertation that included a literature review,
focus groups, an industry survey, data collection workshops, in-progress projects testing,
and statistical analysis of project performance. The results presented in this dissertation are
based on input from 128 experts in 57 organizations and a data sample of 33 completed
and 11 on-going large industrial projects representing over $13.9 billion of total installed
cost. The contributions of this work include: (1) developing a tested FEED definition for
the large industrial projects sector, (2) determining the industry’s state of practice for
measuring FEED deliverables, (3) developing an objective and scalable two-dimensional
method to measure FEED maturity and accuracy, and (4) quantifying that projects with
high FEED maturity and accuracy outperformed projects with low FEED maturity and
accuracy by 24 percent in terms of cost growth, in relation to the approved budget. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Construction Management 2019

Links between modularization critical success factors and project performanceChoi, Jin Ouk 07 July 2014 (has links)
Through the exporting of a portion of site-based work to fabrication shops, modularization (MOD) can enhance efficiency in the construction industry. The industry, however, applies modularization at only a low level. To reach higher levels of modularization, the EPC industry needs new approaches. Previous studies have identified the current trends in and barriers to the industry's application of modularization. Moreover, in 2013, the Construction Industry Institute's (CII) Research Team 283 identified 21 critical success factors (CSFs) that create an optimum environment for a broader and more effective use of modularization. However, the researcher has identified a need to better understand the relative significance of MOD CSFs and their associations with project performance. Thus, the research was conducted to provide recommendations for better project performance by identifying correlations between the accomplishment of MOD CSFs and project performance and examining actual modular projects' MOD CSF accomplishment. This study identified four statistically significant positive correlations. Those are between the accomplishment of MOD CSFs and: 1) cost performance; 2) schedule performance; 3) Construction performance; and 4) Startup performance. In addition to the correlation analysis, the study also identified the CSFs that appear to contribute the most to 1) "Modular Project Success", 2) Construction success, 3) Startup success, 4) Cost performance, and 5) Schedule performance. To collect information on the actual industrial modular projects, the study surveyed industry experts. By using this study, many industrial project stakeholders from owners to fabricators, designers and EPC contractors, will be able to understand the relationships between MOD CSFs and project performance. Such an understanding should motivate them to achieve better project performance through implementing modularization CSFs. / text

Från skruv och mutter till budget och prognoser : En kvalitativ studie om viktiga kompetenser för en projektledare i industriella projekt / From Screws and Nuts to Budgets and Forecasts : A Qualitative Study About Important Competencies for a Project Manager in Industrial ProjectsJohansson, Emmie January 2022 (has links)
A qualitative case study has been conducted at an industry facility in the central part of Sweden to research the perceived importance of that project managers in industrial projects have technical competence. The research question for the study is; What is the perceived need for that project managers have technical competence in industrial projects? A thematic analysis has been conducted and resulted in four themes; A role with many faces, The optimal project manager, Molded in the same cast, and Does everyone have to walk the same path? The analysis has resulted in the conclusions that the size of the project affects the project manager role and responsibility, as well as, which competencies that is perceived to be most important for the project manager. In small projects, the project manager’s technical competence is perceived to be of great significance, but in large projects it is not viewed to be essential. There is a tradition of that project managers in industrial projects from the beginning are technical workers, which contributes to the perceived importance of that project managers in industrial project have technical competence.

Projektledning från ovan - Beroenden och kopplingar i en industriell multi-projektverksamhetSjögren Källqvist, Anna January 2002 (has links)

This licentiate thesis discusses management and control ofan industrial business that implements several projects at thesame time, a so-called multi-project business. The questionthat will be answered is: What distinguish the management of amulti-project business and what is crucial for the managementto focus on? The thesis is based on a case study at a companycalled Adtranz Signal in Sweden. Adtranz Signal develops, designs and delivers signal and safety systems for the railway. They are a perfect example of a modern company that operatesthe main part of their business with projects.

The discussion will take us beyond the single project andabove the project manager. This is necessary because projectmanagement literature, by tradition, emphasizes on theindividual project, and the complexity of problems when aproject is executed isolated from the ordinary business. Todaythere are only a few empirical and theoretical studies ofmulti-project businesses, especially those that focuses on howindustrial companies use projects and lead project work.

The scientific contribution in this thesis consists of twoparts. The first part is a profound empirical description ofhow management, control and realization of a multi-projectbusiness work. The second part is a further development of theliterature considering management problems in a multi-projectbusiness. Finally there are three important conclusions pointedout:

It exists dependencies and connections between theprojects in the companys multi-project businessThedifferent dependencies can be categorizedThedependencies and connections are important and must be handledsince they effect the management of the multi-projectbusiness

Keywords:Management and control of a project business, industrial projects, multi-project business, multi-projectenvironment, project-based company, project management
