Collective hunt means bigger prey : A study of internal communication challengesmicro-enterprises face in everyday work

The aim of this thesis is to identify communication challenges in micro-organizations. Thisthesis defines theoretical areas such as organizational communication and internalcommunication, with a focus on competence, uncertainty, and work disruptions. The methodsused in the collection of empirical material were participant observation, semi-structuredinterviews, and an e-mail survey. This material in combination with the theoretical backgroundhas showed the importance of technical competence in order for employees to be ableto communicate effectively. The technological solutions available today have the potential tomake a workplace much more effective and efficient by using new equipment andcommunication methods, but reaching this potential requires that everyone feels comfortablewith the use and has sufficient competence. The results indicate that since microorganizationshave only a few employees, technical competence needs to be high for everyemployee. The study also reveals the lack of a theoretical framework to evaluate the resourcesrequired for optimal communication in organizations or businesses, and introduces asuitable framework for later studies.

Digitala läromedel och didaktik : Upplevelsen av digitala och fysiska läromedel i gymnasiet / Digital study materials and didactics : The experience of digital and physical study materials in upper secondary school

The purpose of the research is to identify how pupils and teachers experience different kind of study material in school. It is also important to know which factors affect these experiences. This is what my study will examine. The key-factor to be able to interpret different kinds of multimodal literacy is to understand its textual genre. Pupils and teachers need a certain level of technological skills to be able to create multimodal text and to have an estimation of the purpose of different text genres. To analyze the research material a hermeneutic method is used with a phenomenographic focus of the experience that the survey data and interviewed informants provide for the research. Results shows that some experience is similar between the teachers and pupils concerning the different study materials, then again preference might differ when it comes to preparations for tasks or lectures. Something all informants agree upon, is that the computer as digital tool is positive since it is used in every subject in school and it is never lost or forgotten at home by pupils.

Perceptions of the Effects of Technical Competence on Female Adult Learners

Colleges and universities face some retention problems for female adult learners over the age of 25 who face technical requirements in higher education courses. However, little is known about how technology influences the experiences of female adult learners. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to identify how female adult learners over the age of 25 perceived the technical demands of the courses in their degree programs and how they coped with those demands. The conceptual frameworks for the study were the adult learning theory, which focuses on self-directed learning, and the transactional distance theory. Participants for this study were 12 female adult learners who reside in Tennessee who have been enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses and were over the age of 25. Data sources included face-to-face and phone interviews. Data were analyzed using open coding to identify patterns and themes. The findings of this study indicated that participants were influenced by the technical demands they faced. Participants attributed the extent of success in their courses to the level of technical competence they possessed during their time as students. Participants used individual coping strategies in their courses as well as resources provided by the institutions they attended. This study contributes to positive social change because it provides information that higher education institutions can use to both increase retention and help female adult learners succeed during their higher education careers.

En kvalitativ fallstudie har genomförts på en industrianläggning i Mellansverige i syfte att undersöka den upplevda vikten av att projektledare i industriella projekt besitter teknisk kompetens. För att besvara studiens syfte har följande forskningsfråga formulerats; Hur upplevs behovet av teknisk kompetens hos projektledare i industriella projekt? En tematisk analys har genomförts och resulterat i fyra teman; En roll med flera ansikten, Den optimala projektledaren, Stöpta i samma form och Måste alla vandra samma väg? Analysen har resulterat i slutsatserna att projekts storlek påverkar projektledarens roll och ansvar samt vilka kompetenser som upplevs vara viktigast för projektledaren. I små projekt är projektledarens tekniska kompetens av stor vikt, men i större projekt anses den inte vara nödvändig. Det finns en tradition av att projektledare i industriella projekt i grunden är tekniker, vilket påverkar den upplevda vikten av att projektledare i industriella projekt besitter teknisk kompetens. / A qualitative case study has been conducted at an industry facility in the central part of Sweden to research the perceived importance of that project managers in industrial projects have technical competence. The research question for the study is; What is the perceived need for that project managers have technical competence in industrial projects? A thematic analysis has been conducted and resulted in four themes; A role with many faces, The optimal project manager, Molded in the same cast, and Does everyone have to walk the same path? The analysis has resulted in the conclusions that the size of the project affects the project manager role and responsibility, as well as, which competencies that is perceived to be most important for the project manager. In small projects, the project manager’s technical competence is perceived to be of great significance, but in large projects it is not viewed to be essential. There is a tradition of that project managers in industrial projects from the beginning are technical workers, which contributes to the perceived importance of that project managers in industrial project have technical competence.

Ledarskap inom ramen för ett systemutvecklingsprojekt : fokus på en arbetsprocess med stöd i Vattenfallsmodellen

Many research reports mention the fact that a huge number of all system development projects never reach a successful ending; with other words never fulfil formulated goals. By identifying and forming success factors (and in some aspect risk factors) that the project manager in practice can use, this study may be seen as a step in the direction towards minimising the high number of failed system development projects. The purpose of this research report is to investigate how a system development project, where the development process is based on a specific development or process model (in this case the Waterfall model), can and should be driven. I aim to clarify what is demanded of a project leader for the specific development process and give an account for which eventual leadership qualities that can be well suited for given situation in relation to the need for technical competence. Among other things the project manager should inspire confidence, drive, be a decision maker, engage and own some form of basic knowledge in the field of system development. After completed investigation and analysis the given hypothesis is finally verified; leadership qualities are of more importance than technical competence for the project manager in a system development project where the development process is based on the Waterfall model.

Önskvärda ledarskapskompetenser är ett väl utforskat område, dock finns det relativt lite forskning som berör ämnet inom industrin i Sverige. Syftet med denna studie var därför att få en ökad förståelse för vad medarbetare som är verkande i en global industriorganisation upplever som viktiga kompetenser för ett optimalt ledarskap. Studien bygger på empiri från nio kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer med anställda från den globala industriorganisationen. Resultatet visar att chefer som besitter både generisk- och yrkeskompetens visar sig tillsammans uppnå det mest optimala ledarskapet. Slutsatsen som dras är att medarbetarna upplever en kombination av generisk- och yrkeskompetens som mest gynnsamt och att de ej går att styrka att den ena kompetensen är viktigare än den andra. Ytterligare en annan slutsats som denna studie kan bidra med är en ny synvinkel till teorin gällande uppdelningen mellan generisk- och yrkeskompetens. Empirin i studien har visat en sammanslagning av både generisk- och yrkeskompetens och menar att om dessa särskiljs helt åt kan det uppvisa en missvisande bild av kompetenserna. / Desirable leadership skills are a well-explored area, however, there is relatively little research on the subject within industry in Sweden. The purpose of this study was therefore to gain an increased understanding of what employees who are working in a global industrial organization experience as important competencies for optimal leadership. The study is based on empirical evidence from nine qualitative semi-structured interviews with employees from the global industrial organization. The result shows that managers who possess both generic and professional competence together achieve the most optimal leadership. The conclusion that is drawn is that the employees experience a combination of generic and professional competence as the most favorable and that they cannot prove that one competenceis more important than the other. Another conclusion that this study can contribute is a new point of view to the theory regarding the division between generic and professional competence. The experience in the study has shown an amalgamation of both generic and professional competences and believes that if these are separated completely, it can present a misleading picture of the competences.

The topic of this thesis is evaluation of management of local voluntary fire brigade units of category JPO II and JPO III in the district of Jindřichův Hradec and suggestions to its amendment. The contents of the thesis is permanent organizational, technical and professional competence which is the essential prerequisite for their setting to rescue and liquidation jobs at emergency events and in critical situations. The goal of the thesis was to judge the management further to the professional training by description of the way of achieving professional competence and realizing professional preparation of local fire brigade members, and to try to find out possible imperfection or unbalanced state between requirements and factual situations. The technique of questionnaires and auricular discussions were used to explore if professional training is carried out regularly and with proper coverage and quality set for the category of fire brigade units of JPO II and JPO III. Through the achieved results of the research the level of management of local voluntary fire brigade units of the category JPO II and JPO III in the district of Jindřichův Hradec has been ascertained. The results of the questionnaire research have shown that the organizational, technical and professional competence is below standard. This allegation can illustrated by the combination of replies in the questionnaires. The research sample was formed by 16 local units of voluntary firemen with 229 active members. In order to improve the situation some procedures have been suggested to eliminate the imperfection. Primarily it is necessary to focus to thorough following the laws, regulations and rulings which are concered with the given points at issue, including checking of their fulfilment. If it is impossible to achieve improvement of duality of organizational, technical and professional competence then it is advisable to talk about the way how to change the relevant legislation followed by optimization of the required prerequisite for ensuring the units preparedness. The members of the local voluntary fire brigade units are required to achieve too high level of knowledge and preparation in comparision with the time assigned to management at present. The set of organizational, technical and professional training as a whole is not complied by any local voluntary fire brigade unit belonging to category II and III of fire protection unit.

Nevertheless, it does not have specific selection area or graduation, and the development of its competences depend almost exclusively on the training offered and performed internally, inside the institution and the workplace. Considering the Federal Police General Direction and Technical-Scientific Direction strategic plannings, that expressed the relevance of the servants professional development through continuous training and competence management as strategies to reach their missions, it is possible to notice how important is the proper study and development of the forensic document examination competences. This purpose of this research is to analyze if the technical competences of the Federal Police forensic document examiners that has been described in the technical activity matrix are in consonance with the ones described by UN, and if these competences have been developed by the training courses offered by National Police Academy. It was identified some gaps, i.e., UN recommendations that are in accordance with the matrix, but are no developed in the training courses, besides some discrepancies in the courses duration. Some suggestions were made for minimize or eliminate these gaps, as well as another considerations related to more training offer, professional specialization, and proficiency tests and mentoring implementation. / A Documentoscopia é a maior área de perícia da Criminalística da PF, respondendo por 24,49% de toda a produção de laudos do Sistema Nacional de Criminalística. Apesar disso, não possui área de concurso ou graduação específicas, e o desenvolvimento das competências da área depende quase que exclusivamente da capacitação oferecida e executada internamente, dentro da instituição e do ambiente de trabalho. Considerando os planejamentos estratégicos da Direção Geral e da Diretoria Técnico-Científica da PF, que manifestaram a importância da valorização de seus servidores por meio da capacitação contínua e da gestão de competências como estratégia para se alcançar suas missões, vê-se a relevância no adequado estudo e desenvolvimento das competências na área da perícia documentoscópica. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar se as competências técnicas dos peritos documentoscópico da Polícia Federal elencadas na matriz da função técnica da PF estão em consonância com as elencadas pela ONU para os examinadores forenses de documentos, e se essas competências estão sendo desenvolvidas nas ações de capacitação oferecidas pela ANP voltadas para a área. Foram identificadas algumas lacunas, ou seja, recomendações da ONU que encontram correspondência nas elencadas na matriz, mas não são desenvolvidas pelas ações de capacitação, além da discrepância quanto à carga horária dos cursos. Algumas sugestões para a minimização ou eliminação dessas lacunas foram colocadas, e outras considerações foram feitas, principalmente voltadas à maior oferta de capacitação, à especialização profissional, à instituição de testes de proficiência e da mentoria.
