Post-custodial practices on digital environments of traditional information institutions such as archives, libraries and museums demand new knowledge and new standardized representation of data. Such data should converge with computational languages that translate them into effective interoperability across systems for the storage, preservation, access and sharing of information in the process of Digital Curation. In Museu da Pessoa, the convergence of Information Design (ID) with other complex systems, such as Digital Curation and Information Science is observed, for the intentional construction of memories of people or communities on the Web 2.0. Informational actors interacting at the interfaces of the digital environments of these institutions act as information designers. Institutional agents should be empowered to take actions that juxtapose disciplines in order to minimize the risk of digital obsolescence and information valorization, ideally stored in reliable digital repositories for their access and long-term preservation. The study discusses the role of ID in the process of Digital Curation of Museu da Pessoa. The general objective of the research is to describe how Information Design resources, defined in and for its Digital Curation, structure the interfaces of Homepage and Conte sua História (CSH) of the museum's digital ambience, and Principal and Nova História from the database. To the general objective of the research, the specific objectives are added: to raise the technological transformations of the museum from its origin (1991); to know how the information contents are designed and presented on the interfaces of their digital environment from Homepage (back-end and front-end); to identify language convergences and interoperability across the subsystem and digital systems, ID resources planned in the Digital Curation; to verify the implications of ID in the interactions between subjects and the digital environment of the museum and to recognize the role of ID in the Digital Curation of Museu da Pessoa. The descriptive research is based on bibliographical and documentary review, historical study and indirect participation in planned observation in sites, dissertations, theses, scientific articles and academic journals, documents and books; and direct participatory observation or virtual ethnography for immersion and verification of the principle of subject-environment mutuality. It is justified because it seeks to contribute to the epistemological, academic and transdisciplinary understanding of the museum and to take a step towards the technical-scientific understanding about how ID plans language convergences, multimodal coding and interoperability across systems. From the political-social point of view, to describe the Digital Curation process of Museu da Pessoa may serve as a model for memory systems aimed at socializing information mediated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). We highlight that in the Museum's collection, resulting from bottom-up emergencies facilitated by top-down simulations (ID), the museum fact, intangible memories, are represented by metadata (ID). We describe the structuring role of ID in visible and invisible layers of the digital system; as well as organizer of the presentation and representation of information provided in and for Digital Curation. We observe possible updates in the Digital Curation of the Museum so that the information access and sharing can be guarantee of its preservation to future generations.

Tembo, Rachael January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008. / There is need to realise the potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) for farmers and agricultural role players, in order to achieve agriculture development. However in South Africa, it is not yet established which specific ICT are used and how they are used in different agricultural farm enterprises, and if used, their extent of deployment. In addition, few studies have focused on the factors that influence the use of ICT in South African agriculture. This study addresses these issues. This study investigates factors of ICT use that are helpful and necessary for the recognition of the importance and benefits of ICT in Western Cape commercial agriculture, specifically in the wine industry. The study investigates the different forms of ICT used in the wine industry, how they are being used in the industry, what they are used for, how important these technologies are as enablers of production, and the factors that affect their use. This study focuses on the use, not the adoption, of ICT in commercial agriculture. The study involved two groups of participants and was in two phases. In phase one, a survey of commercial farmers was conducted in Robertson Wine Valley. Phase two involved their farm employees who are involved in farm activities ranging from field, winery and administrative work in Robertson Wine Valley. 15 farmers and 60 farm employees responded to the questionnaire. The scope of the results for this study is limited to descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and correlation analysis. From the chi-square and correlation analysis, it was found that ICT training, age, race, current occupation on farm, monthly salary, education level and ICT literacy influence the use of ICT by farm employees.

Mahmood, Ashrafullah Khalid January 2010 (has links)
Information security has significant role in Healthcare organizations. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) with patient’s information is considered as very sensitive in Healthcare organization. Sensitive information of patients in healthcare has to be managed such that it is safe and secure from unauthorized access. The high-level quality care to patients is possible if healthcare management system is able to provide right information in right time to right place. Availability and accessibility are significant aspects of information security, where applicable information needs to be available and accessible for user within the healthcare organization as well as across organizational borders. At the same time, it is essentials to protect the patient security from unauthorized access and maintain the appropriate level in health care regarding information security. The aim of this thesis is to explore current management of information security in terms of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and how these are protected from possible security threats and risks in healthcare, when the sensitive information has to be communicated among different actors in healthcare as well as across borders. The use of information and communication technologies by nurse educators for teaching and learning in edo state, Nigeria

Esewe, Roselynd Ejakhianghe January 2013 (has links)
Magister Curationis - MCur / Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are for information storage, retrieval, display and transmission through electronic means in our day-to-day life. The use of technology in education has made both learners and educators to achieve new possibilities because life is made easy for them due to its inherent advantages which range from support of conventional classroom work, design, development of learning materials to accessing virtual libraries. Harnessing these benefits places a great deal of demand on nurse educators to improve the teaching-learning experience of learners. However, the major players, especially the nurse educators in Nigeria, have not been properly investigated to find out if they use technology in teaching, and if they do, what types they use. The study aimed to explore and describe the nurse educators‟ use of Information and Communication Technologies in teaching and learning in nursing schools in Edo State, Nigeria. It focused on the type of Information and Communication Technologies used by nurse educators, how they use them, and the challenges they face, if any, in the use of technologies with a view to suggesting ways of overcoming the identified challenges. An exploratory descriptive quantitative research design with the use of self-administered questionnaires was adopted. The population was all the 36 nurse educators in the three universities that offer the Bachelor in Nursing Science programmes in Edo State. Validity and reliability of the study questions were ensured and a pilot study was done to ensure internal consistency by measurement with the Cronbach‟s alpha consistency measure that yielded 0.85. Descriptive analysis was employed with the aid of frequencies, tables and graphs. Findings of the study indicate that the nurse educators use technology for teaching and learning. They all use the laptop 34(100%); desktop computer iii accounts for 33(97.1%). The respondents use these technologies in conjunction with word processing and spreadsheet for direct classroom teaching, preparation of lectures and students‟ results as well as classroom facilitation. Twenty-five (25) respondents (73.5%) use the mobile technologies such as cell phones and emails to send and receive messages from students. Thirty (30) respondents (88.2%) store information as well as browse the Internet. The use of these applications is quite high, unlike video transmission to receive recorded lectures from out-stations which amounted to 7(20.6%) and video conferencing to dialogue with nursing experts 6(17.6%). The CD ROMS are used for direct classroom teaching, storage of course materials and for rehearsal and revision purposes by less than 50% of the respondents each. The respondents identified erratic power supply, unstable connectivity and inadequate ICT facilities as some of the major challenges they encounter. In conclusion, the study recommends among other things that the various departmental and personal offices of the lecturers be equipped with modern technology facilities. The university management is urged to explore other alternative power supply like solar energy. Furthermore, all the role players are urged to play their part effectively to make ICT for teaching and learning beneficial and effective.

A Phenomenological Exploration of Engineers’ Experiences Using Communication Technologies in Telework

MacFarlane, Gabrielle January 2016 (has links)
Telecommuting is becoming an increasingly popular trend in the modern workforce. Among the growing number of teleworkers are engineers, a profession where communication is a necessity. This study employs a phenomenological research approach to understand and describe the ways in which information communication technology (ICT) affects teleworking engineers’ interpersonal communication in the workplace and perceptions of isolation in social and organizational contexts. Uses and gratifications theory and media richness theory were used to better understand teleworkers’ selection and use of ICT. The findings revealed six themes: emotional impact, workplace relationships, information communication technology in the workplace, the nature of telework, telework and connectivity, and the organizational role in telework. This study contributes to communication research by adding to the growing body of knowledge about the influence of telework on workplace communication and relationships from the perspective of a niche population, engineers.

Investigating technology acceptance in public secondary schools in Pretoria

Alexander, Helena January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which ICT (Information Communication Technology) is accepted and used in teaching in four public South African schools. The constructs of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were used to generate an understanding of educators’ technology acceptance and use in their classrooms for the purpose of teaching. It is generally understood that for the model to be successfully implemented, all the pillars of this theoretical framework must be present and operational in the classroom. This study followed a qualitative research approach and focused on multiple case studies. The use of a multiple-case study, which involved four schools in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa within a limited time, allowed the researcher to detect things that could be hidden or go undetected in a large-scale, broader, longitudinal study. Semi-structured interviews allowed the researcher to investigate individuals' opinions, their experiences, beliefs and/or possible motives on certain subjects. This instrument for collecting information allowed for more open-ended questions and is less structured. Data was also collected through field notes, observation and document analysis. The researcher opted to use the Atlas.ti programme to prepare and organise the data for analysis. It can be concluded from the findings that the educators perceived educational technology to be useful. There was a positive consensus among the participants that the technologies received are not difficult to use, and have in fact, reduced their workload. Further, there is a positive attitude from both learners and educators towards the technology. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / MEd / Unrestricted
