Corporate Innovation: A Case Study of the Corporate Incubation Process / Företagsinnovation: En fallstudie av företagsinkubationsprocessen

FRANK, ERIK SIMON January 2018 (has links)
Incubators have become a popular way for corporations to stay in front of their competition because,y pos today´s startups are an immense spring of innovation as many possess emerging innovation. These corporate incubators offer the startups a support system where they can test and leapfrog their innovations, and add innovation to the corporations. However, there is a large difference between these two parties, which makrs successful collaboration a challenge. This study examines how to improve this collaboration based on information obtained through an embedded case study of a large corporate incubator and startups present within it. The main findings suggest three important factors for a large enterprise to gain the most value out of their incubators: (1) clear communication, (2) startups need to know what their objective is, and (3) incubator support from the organization. To leverage startup innovation in a corporate incubator and to attain these three factors, three building blocks for a corporate incubator have been identified: selection process, case building, and graduation.

Stationary charging infrastructure: Managing investment risks to enable charging possibilities : A case study of a future stationary charging hub in Stockholm South / Stationär laddinfrastruktur: Hanteringen av investeringsrisker för att möjliggöra laddning : En fallstudie om en framtida stationär laddningshubb i Stockholm Syd

Olsson, Anton, Notlöv, Vendela January 2022 (has links)
The electrification of heavy transport is considered a solution to climate change. Today, electrification is challenged by high investment costs for vehicles and charging, which hampers the conversion. The purpose is to investigate what investment risks occur when creating a stationary charging hub by focusing on three different charging possibilities (private, semi-public, and public) to examine the differences between them. The study is a case study with the study object Stockholm South, which is considered to be a future logistics area. The study is based on literature, documents, and interviews with actors linked to the study object. Moreover, to identify potential investment risks the study conducts a life cycle cost analysis of a stationary charging hub. The conducted interviews identified that several actors are positive to enable a charging hub, but are challenged by high investment costs, uncertainties regarding electricity network capacity, and future prospects linked to the technological development of electric trucks and charging technology. Moreover, the interviews also identified opportunities such as financial support, potential market advantages of being one of the firsts on the market, and contribution to a sustainable transport sector. The results of the cost analysis show that a stationary charging hub for heavy goods transport entails high investments and operating costs, which are affected by future aspects such as electricity prices, electricity networks, technology development, and utilisation rate. In addition, the choice of closed or open charging hub has an impact on the total cost. The analysis of the results indicates that collaboration between the involved actors can facilitate several of the identified challenges and risks. The study contributes to expanding the empirical data on stationary charging infrastructure for heavy freight transport. In addition, the study contributes with a cost analysis for a charging station that can provide inspiration and a basis for future investments. The theoretical contribution mainly concerns how new technologies in ecosystem theory are handled in relation to collaboration and business models.

In the search of the student's role in innovation ecosystems

Alenbring, Cornelia January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Level: Master thesis in Innovation and design , 30 credits Institution: School of Innovation, Design and Technology, Mälardalen University Author: Cornelia Alenbring (98/05/24) Title: In the search of the student's role in innovation ecosystems Supervisors: Anders Vikström, Erik Bjurström MDU examinator:Yvonne Eriksson Keywords: “ecosystems for innovation”, “eco systems for social innovation”, “social innovation ecosystems”, “quadruple helix” “students- innovation ecosystem” “students role in innovation ecosystems” Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the specific role of students in innovation ecosystems. By gaining a deeper understanding of their role, this research aims to contribute to a more nuanced micro-dynamic perspective on the role of students in innovation ecosystems. This thesis explores conceptualizations and metaphors of innovation ecosystems with the aim of exploring different theorizing in the field, related to the role of students within those. Research question: What is the role of students in innovation ecosystems? Method: The study was based on a qualitative method. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations using focus groups with 5 actors within the public, academia, industry and civil society. Conclusion: The role of the student is at the heart of the innovation ecosystem metaphor - that of emergence and co-evolution. Rather, the empirical evidence of this thesis concurs that the roles available to students also depend on other actors taking them seriously, and that the reasons for less than optimal exchange between students and other actors deserves further investigation. It is an interesting observation that students fall between the system perspective’s grand theorizing and pedagogics’ narrower focus on education: - So what is the point of pursuing a research approach where either students or ecosystems are not mentioned? There is an obvious gap in where the abstract level of the system perspective, whilst it can serve as an overview of the concept, does not specify actors and misses to provide a micro perspective on what is occurring between actors, that could explain how it all happens. Are students rather representatives of the civil society, or of what Powell referred to ‘amphibians’, or representative of nothing but themselves as individuals-in-the-making, as a representative of becoming itself and emergence in itself – through their interaction on a campus which they don’t own, but inhabit? And what do companies really want when they want to be a campus? What is special about a campus and life on a campus? What is the very essence of it?

Digitalization and innovation in the real estate and facility management sectors - an ecosystem perspective

Kytömäki, Olli January 2020 (has links)
Digitalization has become a topic of several presentations and discussions in real estate industry seminars in recent years. Often the speeches are about why the real estate industry needs digitalization, presenting threats and opportunities for the participants of the seminars. Still, real estate industry is conservative by nature and thus far property owners have not needed to innovate in order to stay in business. Therefore, a question arises that how do real estate owners react to the growing expectations about digitalization. On the other hand, relatively little is known about the innovativeness of real estate firms, as innovation research in built environment sector has largely focused on building project management phase organizations and facility management firms. Still, the real estate owners have a central role and a long-term perspective on the innovation in the built environment sector as a whole, as they are clients in all building life-cycle phases. Thus, this thesis purpose is to increase understanding of digitalization as a phenomenon in the real estate and facility management sectors: 1) by distinguishing the phenomenon in relation to existing research and 2) by generating new knowledge on digitalization in the field by explorative research. In order to distinguish the phenomenon in relation to existing research, the thesis provides a structured literature review that focuses on digitalization in the real estate and facility management sector. The main conclusion is that digitalization is a complex phenomenon, including multiple perspectives and conceptualizations, although, the literature converges on rather distinct topics of digital systems and methods, technology adoption and organization and management. Additionally, the review provides a discussion of opportunities for further research. An argument is made for sociotechnical perspective to provide opportunities for better managerial comprehension on the complex phenomenon. In order to generate new knowledge on digitalization in the field, particularly, on the innovativeness of real estate firms, the thesis provides summaries of two papers. The first paper focuses on the innovation processes in the real estate owner organizations and the second paper focuses on the innovation ecosystem that comprises of actors that contribute towards common innovation goals. The papers are based on interviews with the various real estate industry actors and document analysis. The papers converge on results, concluding that the real estate owners have invested in resources and capabilities for innovation, but it is still challenging for them to act on the digital threats and opportunities. Additionally, the second paper develops an operationalizable definition and methodology for research on innovation ecosystems, which has relevance for the more general literature on innovation and strategy. Thus, this thesis distinguishes digitalization as a phenomenon in the built environment management sectors and increases understanding on the innovativeness of real estate firms’ and other actors that contribute to the innovativeness of the real estate sector as a whole. /
QC 20200127
