Inledning: Utefter den växande betydelsen av innovation, har ett kunskapsgap identifierats kopplat till förståelsen av kompetenser samt förmågor som utgör innovationskompetens och krävs för innovation.  Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats har varit att skapa en ökad förståelse för hur innovatörer i olika branscher uppfattar innovationskompetens. Metod: Undersökningen har tillämpat en kvalitativ undersökningsdesign och deduktiv forskningsansats. Den empiriska undersökningen innefattar sju stycken semistrukturerade personliga online-intervjuer med innovatörer från olika branscher.  Slutsats: Genom en empirisk prövning av den framtagna konceptuella innovationskompetens modellen har; kreativitet, kritiskt tänkande, självledarskap, nätverk och initiativ identifieras som nyckelkompetenser för innovationskompetens. Därtill har sambandet mellan dessa kompetenser uppmärksammats som avgörande för innovationer och för varje kompetens har centrala förmågor identifierats. Ett nytt bidrag till forskningsområdet var att om innovatörer innoverar för egen- eller för en organisations vinning, influerar det hur denne uppfattar innovationskompetens. Innovationskompetens är ett område som inbegriper en mängd olika uppfattningar, varav resultatet från denna studie är ett steg i rätt riktning för att skapa en tydligare bild. / As the importance of innovation continues to grow a knowledge gap has been identified, consisting of an understanding of innovation competence and the adjacent competencies and capabilities needed by an innovator. The knowledge gap led the authors to formulate the following purpose: the purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of how innovators in different industries perceive innovation competence. To examine the purpose, the paper adopted a qualitative research approach and a deductive structure. The research included seven semi-structured personal online interviews with innovators active in different industries. The theoretical framework was summarized and presented using a conceptual model which was tested against empirical data. The results conclude that; creativity, critical thinking, self-leadership, network and initiative are key competencies for innovation. For each competence, several capabilities were identified, furthermore the connection between the competencies and capabilities was found to be crucial when working with innovation. In conclusion, innovation competence includes a whole variety of differentiating perceptions, therefore this study contributes to the field by creating a clearer understanding. In addition, the authors identified that innovators perception of innovation competencies and capabilities was influenced by if the innovator was innovating for one's own benefit or an organization.
