Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / O objetivo nesta dissertação consiste em verificar se o crescimento das exportações de produtos manufaturados chineses afetou negativamente o desempenho das exportações desses produtos dos países da América Latina, no período de 1995-2005. As exportações chinesas são consideradas em conjunto com as de Hong Kong, tendo em vista que esse país é considerado um centro de re-exportação da China. Para tal, foi estimada uma equação gravitacional ampliada para as exportações dos países latino americanos destinadas a outros mercados, incluindo como variável explicativa as exportações da China para esses destinos. O resultado obtido com a aplicação de variáveis instrumentais em dois estágios mostrou que um aumento de 1% nas exportações chinesas para esses mercados reduz as vendas externas dos países latino americanos em 0,3%. No entanto, como os instrumentos disponíveis não variam com o tempo, não foi possível utilizar o método de efeito fixo que evita o viés decorrente da omissão de varáveis que captam as características específicas dos países, as quais podem influenciar o volume de comércio. Portanto, o resultado não foi conclusivo. / The objective in this investigation consists in verify if the growth of the Chinese manufactured goods negatively affected the performance from the exports of this products from the Latin America countries, in the period 1995-2005. The Chinese exports are considerate in set with the ones of Hong Kong, since this country is considered a center of re-exportation from China. For such, was esteem a gravity equation augmented to the exportations from the Latin America countries destined to other markets, including as explicative variable the exportations from China to these destinies. The result obtained with the application of instrumental variables in two stage showed that an increase of 1% on the Chinese exports to these markets reduces the external sales from the Latin America countries in 0,3%. However, since the instruments available no change over time, it was not possible to use the method of fixed effect that avoid the bias occurred from the omission of variables, that can influence the trade volume. Thus, the result was not conclusive.

abstract: By examining the cognitive mechanisms behind human memory, the author hypothesizes that instrumental conductors can more quickly and effectively internalize music scores. With this theory, conductors could offer more informed and nuanced communications to their ensembles. Furthermore, these ideas could be incorporated into how conducting is taught to younger students by cultivating a more in-depth understanding of the music being studied. This research paper surveys current trends in cognitive science related to the interactions of long-term memory (LTM) and short-term memory (STM) concerning score study and memorization employed by instrumental conductors. The research is divided into three sections, beginning with an examination of the key literature from the field of cognitive science. It continues with an overview of current musicological research and applications and finally concludes with a review of current instrumental conducting pedagogy that include discussions of memory. Moreover, recommended steps and a potential framework to incorporate cognitive science research into future conducting pedagogies are further outlined. Nesta pesquisa, é feita a avaliação de um Projeto de Inglês Instrumental, proposto por um Centro Binacional (CB), dentro do ensino médio de duas escolas regulares particulares do DF. O objetivo deste trabalho é mostrar que um projeto como este pode desenvolver mais de uma habilidade dentro da sala de aula, tornando o aprendizado da língua estrangeira mais relevante para os alunos, na medida em que se torna um curso sob-medida, ou melhor, um curso de línguas para fins específicos. _____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In Brazil, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) became well known as the teaching of reading strategies. However, in its origins, the teaching of English for Specific Purposes can be much wider and encompass any specific abilities the student wants to work on. This research is the evaluation of an ESP Project, proposed by a Binational Center, inside two private high schools in Brasília, Brazil. The objective of this dissertation is to show that this kind of project can develop more than one skill in the classroom, making the learning of a foreign language more meaningful for the students, as it designs a tailor−made language course.

Os instrumentos de pesquisa foram: entrevista narrativa e semi-estruturada, observação de aulas, notas de campo, gravações, transcrições e documentos de sala de aula. Os resultados apontam que: uma das informantes concebe a tradução como atrelada às palavras e às idéias e é favorável a seu uso; outra, percebe a tradução associada mais a idéias que a palavras e a considera componente central; e a terceira vê na tradução uma barreira para a compreensão e só a utiliza sob pressão dos aprendizes. As origens dessas crenças podem ser: experiências pessoais, como aprendizes, de formação profissional e como professoras; as crenças de seus professores, de colegas de trabalho e aprendizes; material didático; pesquisa; literatura em Lingüística Aplicada; instituições de ensino; ideologias imperialistas; contexto histórico brasileiro; e o status do inglês na sociedade brasileira. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This case study investigates beliefs of three EAP teachers about the use of translation and the possible relations between these beliefs and their prior experiences. Research instruments include: narrative and semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, field notes, transcriptions and classroom documents. The results show that: one of the informants conceives translation as related to both words and ideas, and is favorable to its use in EAP; another views translation as more related to ideas than words and considers it a key component; the third one views translation as a barrier to comprehension and only uses it in class because of student pressure. These beliefs may derive from: their personal experiences, experiences as learners, trainees, and teachers; the beliefs of their teachers, coworkers, and students; teaching materials; research; Applied Linguistics literature; educational institutions; colonialist ideologies; Brazilian historical context and the status of English in Brazilian society.

The development of measures of masculinity/femininity in psychology has reflected historical interest in categorizing gender differences. Recent measures have characterized masculinity as instrumental/agentic behavior. In this study, a traditional measure (the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Masculinity/femininity scale) was pitted against a more recent measure (the Personal Attributes Questionnaire) in predicting instrumental behavior of mixed sex dyads in laboratory sex stereotyped tasks. Neither measure effectively predicted instrumental behavior. Rather, females performed better on the more complex but feminine stereotyped task, and males performed better on the masculine stereotyped task. The outcome of this study supports the need to view gender differences as dynamic phenomena influenced by individual choice, situational pressures, and interactional characteristics.

Hailstones and Birdcages is a composition of approximately thirteen minutes' duration and is scored for two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and english horn, three Eb clarinets, E clarinete, bass clarinet, two bassoons, two Eb alto saxophones, Bb tenor saxophone, three Bb trumpets, four F horns, three trombones, euphonium, two tubas, and three percussionists. Four instruments--one each of flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, and trombone--are used in concertante like fashion, and there are prominent solo passages for the first bassoon, as well. The work is a single movement in three sections, fast - slow - fast, with ritornello. and employs a free use of the total chromatic. Technically, the work is within the capabilities of an above-average high school or average college wind ensemble
