Filipino immigration and integration into the K-12 school system and the host community

Sagenes, Eric 14 April 2015 (has links)
The foreign-born population continues to grow in Canada and in 2011 they represented 20.6% of the population (Statistics Canada, 2013). In particular, Manitoba is seeing an influx of immigrants from the Philippines and with them they bring their children who must seek ways of making Canada their new home. When immigrants move they go through the process of acculturation to renegotiate their new identities in their new society. There are four acculturation orientations that one can follow: integration, assimilation, separation or marginalization. Of the four, integration has been the most successful orientation for immigrants because they can maintain facets of their native culture, while adding facets of the host society’s culture. This multiple-case study examined the resettlement experiences of four Filipino youth and set out to understand the personal and contextual factors that helped them integrate. In the end, the personal factors that helped with their identity renegotiation and subsequent integration were their age at migration, gender, social capital, and their attitudes towards learning. The contextual factors that helped were educational policies, perceived community attitudes towards immigrants, and their country of origin.

Professional counsellors’ personal narratives of "doing life" while "doing work"

Mikolayenko, Rhonda Delia 11 September 2014 (has links)
What does it mean to be a counsellor? What challenges do counsellors face? How do life events influence the personal and professional self of the counsellor? What insights are provided by time and experience that accompany a lifelong career? The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to learn from six counsellors, each veteran in their careers, how critical life events influenced who they became as both a person and professional. Interview conversations presented retrospective narratives and personal stories illuminating whether each came to discover and develop an integrated self. Descriptive field notes, researcher reflections and comments further substantiated the complex world of counsellors. The interview data offered through this study exposed the intersection of the person and the professional as well as the valuable and diverse growth experiences that occurred along their career trajectories. Embedded in the interviews were implications for resiliency and sustainability; these were derived from learning that occurred with extensive time and experience.

Streetdance - en profan rit? : En värld för de som samhället inte förstår

Bjerking Raeder, Mandella January 2014 (has links)

On integrating aboriginal perspectives: the perceptions of grade 10 English language arts teachers in a large urban school division in western Canada

Wiens, Ryan 20 December 2012 (has links)
In an effort to atone for almost two centuries of mishandling, and faced with ballooning urban Aboriginal populations, many of Canada’s governments and educational institutions have adopted policies to encourage the integration of Aboriginal perspectives in schools. Realizing that their efforts can only be given life by teachers, this study explores the perceptions of eight teachers integrating Aboriginal perspectives into their Grade 10 ELA classes in the Buffalo Stone School Division (pseudonym used). Interviews conducted with the teachers explored how personal, contextual and institutional realities have shaped the perceptions that the teachers bring to their practice.

Understanding the integration experiences of Korean Canadians

Kim, Bong-Hwan 15 April 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to understand and measure the integration experiences of Korean immigrants in Manitoba in terms of their social, political, education and employment domains. The primary theory used in this research is social capital. Theories of acculturation, ethnic economy, power and stratification are also used to situate my research. Data was collected using mixed methods comprising a survey of 260 Korean Canadians living in Winnipeg and qualitative interviews with 12 respondents. The analysis shows, among other things, high levels of racism felt by Korean immigrants in Winnipeg. While this perception and daily encounter of discrimination in the community would impede Korean immigrants’ integration into Canada, there also is a strong will to succeed in the community through accessing existing social capital and a willingness to invest in social capital. The contributions made in the development and operationalization of social capital in terms of willingness to invest and social capital mindset are documented. Several program ideas are offered for policy-makers and future research areas have been identified. The development of a political engagement index provides justification for observations made by the social capital theory and immigrant integration literature.

Arab regional integration : a neo-functionalist and transactionalist analysis

Lakkis, Ramy A. January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is a multidisciplinary analysis of Arab regional integration using the neo- functionalist and transactionalist approaches to integration. Neo-functionalism analyses the process of integration in the Arab World by studying the role of regional institutions including the league of Arab States and three Arab joint ventures. The transactionalist approach examines the impact of regional trade on political and economic integration in the Arab Mashreq. The analysis of the Arab joint ventures is taken further by using elements of business and finance theories. It is conducted on two different levels: the first analyses the operational and financial performance of these ventures. The second examines their role in promoting regional integration especially in the sectors concerned. The analysis is intended to find out whether these ventures were commercially viable or were more politically inspired. Qualitative information was collected from conducting constructive interviews with Arab economists, politicians and managers of the Arab joint ventures examined. The quantitative data was collected from recognisable resources including the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and the Arab Monetary Fund. The problems encountered in this thesis resulted from the application of these theoretical approaches to integration, which are designed to study integration in politically developed societies with more advanced economies. However, the choice is justified since there are no alternatives. Secondly, the data on trade and Arab joint ventures may not be completely accurate since it does not record all transactions. The thesis concludes the following: at the political level, regional institutions did not promote Arab integration since they lacked aspects of supranationality and collective decision-making processes. Also, they did not affect the Arab elite's attitudes and could not initiate a viable process of integration that would spill over from one sector to another. At the economic level, the low level of regional trade in the Arab Mashreq did not prevent the occurrence of many attempts at Arab integration. Moreover, the Arab joint ventures were more politically inspired than commercially. Although they were more resilient to economic and political instability in the Arab World, their role in promoting regional integration was limited.

Imbedded integration rules and their applications in Bayesian analysis

Dellaportas, Petros January 1990 (has links)
This thesis deals with the development and application of numerical integration techniques for use in Bayesian Statistics. In particular, it describes how imbedded sequences of positive interpolatory integration rules (PIIR's) obtained from Gauss-Hermite product rules can extend the applicability and efficiency of currently available numerical methods. The numerical strategy suggested by Naylor and Smith (1982) is reviewed, criticised and applied to some examples with real and artificial data. The performance of this strategy is assessed from the viewpoint of 3 criteria: reliability, efficiency and accuracy. The imbedded sequences of PIIR’s are introduced as an alternative and an extension to the above strategy for two major reasons. Firstly, they provide a rich class of spatially ditributed rules which are particularly useful in high dimensions. Secondly, they provide a way of producing more efficient integration strategies by enabling approximations to be updated sequentially through the addition of new nodes at each step rather than through changing to a completely new set of nodes. Finally, the Improvement in the reliability and efficiency achieved by the adaption of an integration strategy based on PIIR's is demonstrated with various illustrative examples. Moreover, it is directly compared with the Gibbs sampling approach introduced recently by Gelfand and Smith (1988).
