Race and Religion : The Construction of Race in a Pro-Nazi Christian Association in Interwar SwedenForsell, Gustaf January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to scrutinize how Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund (Swedish Association of Religious Reform), a pro-Nazi Christian association in interwar Sweden, constructed the concept of race during the years 1929–1940. Using hermeneutic content analysis and a theoretical approach based on “biopolitics” and “political theology,” I examine the construction during three identified periods: 1929–1933, 1934–1937, 1938–1940. Liberal theological in orientation, the association applied a historical-critical exegesis based on late-nineteenth century German Kulturprotestantismus, seeing culture and religion as inseparable components. Also stressing the need for a “religious rebirth” of the Swedish nation, the association pursued a regenerative return to the religious-ethical characteristics of the country’s alleged heroic Germanic past. First using cultural and biological arguments separately in the construction of race, the association would due to its emerging pro-Nazi orientation become influenced by Nazi German theologians, hence incorporating elements of völkisch ideology.

Política e arte: Arturo Tosi na coleção do Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo / Politics and art: Arturo Tosi in Museum of Contemporary Art\'s Collection at Sao Paulo\'s UniversityDúnia Roquetti Saroute 18 September 2015 (has links)
A critical and reflective study based on five works of the Italian painter Arturo Tosi (Busto Arsizio, 1871 Milan, 1956), part of Museum of Contemporary Art, University of São Paulo (MAC USP) collection, is the main objective that this research aims to accomplish. This study looks at the understanding of these works of art, either from his artistic production perspective or from the view of the early 20th century Italian Art system. By following the path of each painting, since its conception until the origins of the first Italian collection of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM SP), this study intends to research the interrelations between Brazilian and Italian modern art, with special reference to cultural policies in the Italian fascist period. This research also proposes not only to bring the essential parameters for Ciccillo Matarazzo in his selection of Arturo Tosis artworks, as well as their most complex meanings in the discourse of national modern art.

Previous issue date: 2014-03-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Thinking about Woody Allen as "historian movie maker" will be the central idea and core theme of this research. We will examine how Woody Allen "writes" the History of the United States during the interwar period in some of his works, starting with his personal education as an American Jew and artist concerned about the question of the Jewish identity. We will present the main features of his cinematographic language, that is, using satire and ironic language in order to discuss with the audience. We will provide a synthesis of Allen's official biografy, as well as a presentation of his public image, charting a parallelism among these elements and some episodes from his autobiografical movie Radio Days (1987). The relation between History and Cinema will be highlighted too, starting with the concept of the "Movie maker - historian", as defined by the theorist Robert A. Rosenstone, looking for its exemplification in Woody Allen's works. We will analyze Zelig (1983) as a case of study, a fake documentary that reflects on the History of the Jews in America. We will also examine irony as a language, in the light of the Jewish tradition of humor and of Hayden White's historical theory of fiction. Under these premises, we will analyze The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), which shows in its background the United States during the Great Depression, and Midnight in Paris (2011), which provides a critique to the glorification of past times. In all these movies, chosen for dealing with the interwar period and for using irony as a language, we will examine historical aspects and contributions to the Jewish identity in Allen's production.

The focus of this research paper is to analyze how Rebecca West’s book Black Lamb & Grey Falcon contributes to the construction of a theoretical concept created by M. Todorova, ”balkanism”. This is achieved through extensive analysis of her work, focusing on how West creates her own stereotype of Yugoslavia and how her portrayal of people and the Yugoslavian society relate to her discussions of the region’s history. With the help of two categories, ethnography and historiography, I will be able to look how West uses the history of Yugoslavia in the construction of” the other” and” otherness”. The main theory used in this paper is Maria Todorova who came up with the concept of” balkanism”. This combination makes the analysis in question unique. With the help of Todorova, it will be possible to understand why West wrote her book in the way that she did while at the same time trying to find out how West contributed to the construction of the theoretic concept of” balkanism.” In conclusion it can be said that West’s way of writing about Yugoslavia is often characterized by certain words and patterns that will be discussed further in the analysis.

Budování národních organizací YMCA v Československu a Polsku a jejich přínos rozvoji tělesné kultury v letech 1918-1939 / National YMCA groups in Czechoslovakia and Poland - their establishment and successful development of physical culture during the periond from 1918 to 1939Tlustý, Tomáš January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation looks at the history of one physical education organisation which was of great significance to the development of physical culture in inter-war Czechoslovakia and Poland, despite this not being its only activity. The YMCA came into being in England but it particularly flourished in the United States of America. During the First World War, Czechoslovak and Polish soldiers were given a taste of their activity, being accompanied home by members of this in- ternational association after the war had ended. Following requests from military and political leaders of the time, the American YMCA sent its secretaries to the newly established Czechoslovakia and renewed Poland to help establish the first local associations. It was particularly due to them that new practically unknown sports, were introduced to the region. In addition, in both Czechoslovakia and Poland, the YMCA also took responsibility for having new physical education fa- cilities built, improving training methods and generally enhancing young people through sport. During the inter-war years, local YMCA groups and their mem- bers performed exceptionally well in a number of sporting disciplines and ranked among the top Czechoslovak and Polish athletes. Furthermore, the YMCA con- tributed to establishing the tradition of permanent...

Role židovských kulturních zprostředkovatelů v pražských demokratických médiích v meziválečném období / The Role of the Jewish Cultural Mediators in Prague Democratic Media between the WoldwarsBosnovičová, Zuzana January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the situation of the Jewish minority in the first Czechoslovak Republic concentrating on Prague as a unique case of the coexistence of the Czech, German and Jewish people. The aim of the research is to analyze the role of democratic German-language periodicals in the presentation of Zionism and Judaism based on the contributions of both Jewish and non-Jewish authors, the so-called intercultural mediators, and to answer questions about the extent to which the ideas of Zionism were presented in the democratic media, and how the question of Jewish identity was addressed in the German- language liberal press. The thesis is profiled as a political-historical and cultural-historical study. The research method chosen in its elaboration is the unique case study method. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the relations of these media to Judaism and Zionism, as well as the relations of Jews and Non-Jews to the issues of national identity, based on selected texts by both Jewish and non- Jewish writers and journalists. The analysis itself comprises a total of nine texts, and the identity of the author does not play a role in this case. The Jews in Prague mostly mastered German and Czech perfectly, and thus became translators and cultural mediators between the two nations. The...

Ekonomické a politické motivace pro přímé francouzské investice v Československé republice v meziválečném období: Schneider-Creusotova aktivita v Československé republice. / Economic and Political Motivations for French Direct Investment in the Czechoslovak Republic During the Interwar Period: Schneider-Creusot's Activities in the Czechoslovak Republic.Fairchild, David January 2021 (has links)
This study investigates the significant rates of French direct investment in the Czechoslovak Republic during the interwar years, specifically from the end of the First World War until the beginning of the Great Depression. It explores the intersection between external factors that occurred on the European continent and internal factors within the Czechoslovak Republic that drove French direct investment in the new republic during this period. This descriptive thesis uses two case studies of the French economic giant Schneider-Creusot's activities in the Czechoslovak Republic to better understand those motivations. The results from the case studies reveal that the Czechoslovak Republic offered a unique combination of economic stability, natural strategic location, and notable levels of historic productivity. These factors, coupled with the outcome of the Russian Revolution and the Treaty of Versailles, attracted high levels of French direct investment from 1918 to 1929. French foreign policy in the region was driven more heavily by economic fears and opportunities than by political ones. Key Words Czechoslovak Republic, France, Schneider-Creusot, foreign direct investment, interwar period Title Economic and Political Motivations for French Direct Investment in the Czechoslovak Republic During...
