Chanllio Rios, Giovana Violeta 02 March 2017 (has links)
Abstract: The present study assessed the associations between the dimensions of Adult Attachment: Avoidance and Anxiety, and Anger components: Trait Anger, State Anger, and Anger Expression (with its sub-dimensions of Anger Out, Anger In, Anger-Out Control, and Anger- In Control). Computer-based self-report measures were used (ECR-S and ML-STAXI) for data collection, and non-parametric analysis were used to find the correlations. The results, obtained from 112 peruvian young adults, confirmed only one of the hypothesis: the relation between Attachment-oriented Anxiety and Trait Anger (rs=.32). There was no evidence for the other hypothesis, which stated a relation between Avoidance and Trait Anger; and also, relations between Attachment dimensions and Anger sub-dimensions Anger In and Anger Out. At a descriptive level, the data states that Anxious participants had higher State Anger (rs =.20), lower Anger Expression (rs= -.21), higher Anger-Out Control (rs=.19) and higher Anger-In Control (rs=.20). These results, if replicated, could be informative to therapists working individuals with high levels of attachment-oriented Anxiety, as a better understanding of this could be used to develop more effective interventions for expressing their anger. / Tesis

Design techniques for graph-based error-correcting codes and their applications

Lan, Ching Fu 12 April 2006 (has links)
In Shannon’s seminal paper, “A Mathematical Theory of Communication”, he defined ”Channel Capacity” which predicted the ultimate performance that transmission systems can achieve and suggested that capacity is achievable by error-correcting (channel) coding. The main idea of error-correcting codes is to add redundancy to the information to be transmitted so that the receiver can explore the correlation between transmitted information and redundancy and correct or detect errors caused by channels afterward. The discovery of turbo codes and rediscovery of Low Density Parity Check codes (LDPC) have revived the research in channel coding with novel ideas and techniques on code concatenation, iterative decoding, graph-based construction and design based on density evolution. This dissertation focuses on the design aspect of graph-based channel codes such as LDPC and Irregular Repeat Accumulate (IRA) codes via density evolution, and use the technique (density evolution) to design IRA codes for scalable image/video communication and LDPC codes for distributed source coding, which can be considered as a channel coding problem. The first part of the dissertation includes design and analysis of rate-compatible IRA codes for scalable image transmission systems. This part presents the analysis with density evolution the effect of puncturing applied to IRA codes and the asymptotic analysis of the performance of the systems. In the second part of the dissertation, we consider designing source-optimized IRA codes. The idea is to take advantage of the capability of Unequal Error Protection (UEP) of IRA codes against errors because of their irregularities. In video and image transmission systems, the performance is measured by Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR). We propose an approach to design IRA codes optimized for such a criterion. In the third part of the dissertation, we investigate Slepian-Wolf coding problem using LDPC codes. The problems to be addressed include coding problem involving multiple sources and non-binary sources, and coding using multi-level codes and nonbinary codes.

Understanding the content, form and purpose of hero myths as symbolic resources of nation and insurgency : the case of the Provisional IRA in the Northern Ireland conflict, 1969-1998

Butler Perks, Lawrence January 2017 (has links)
Many scholars who have studied nations and nationalism have observed that nationalist movements draw upon mythologised narratives of figures from their nations' pasts to build a sense of national identity and to articulate their vision. Drawing upon the ethno-symbolic approach to nations and nationalism, this thesis seeks to identify the major hero myths, as one form of mythologised narrative, drawn upon by the Provisional IRA during the period of conflict in Northern Ireland between 1969 and 1998. In so doing it examines the origins and development of those myths across the history of Ireland, and of the republican strand of Irish nationalism since the turn of the twentieth century. It identifies the pivotal role of the early twentieth century republican, Patrick Pearse, as republicanism's political archaeologist par excellence, and examines the enduring influence of three factors on the form that such myths took: Celtic culture, Roman Catholicism, and socialism. The thesis further situates the narrative chain of the hero myths within the broader context of the Provisional IRA's wider mythological system, and interrogates the purposes that these myths fulfilled for the movement. In so doing, it reveals that not only did the hero myths, as symbolic resources of the Irish nation, fulfil purposes related to the nation itself, but that the strategy employed in pursuit of the national objectives, insurgency, also imposed its own requirements on those purposes. This has profound implications for orthodox understandings of the role of “blood sacrifice” within the ideology and world-view of the Provisional Republican Movement, as this thesis argues that the role of that concept has been misinterpreted to this point. On the theoretical level, this thesis amends and refines the conception of myth within the ethno-symbolic approach to nations and nationalism, bringing it into line with the work of scholars who have studied the theory of myth. Furthermore, it has considered how the means of pursuing the national objective helped to shape the concept of the nation and ideas of national identity.

___________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis analyses the use of the concept terrorism on the discourses of the former Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair. Using a derridian approach, the study identifies the most important changes the happened in Blair's narratives after the 9/11 of 2001, at the United States, showing the strategies used by the former Prime Minister in the attempt to stabilize the discourse meanings. Using also a schmittian assumption, that being sovereign is to be able to decide about exceptions, the present study shows how the decision exclusivity is used by Blair as a main strategy of stabilization of his discourses' structures.

Terrorism in Popular Culture: A Discourse Analysis of the Portrayal of IRA-Terrorism in Films

Prateepjinda, Kan January 2014 (has links)
Kan Prateepjinda Terrorism in Popular Culture: A Discourse Analysis of the Portrayal of IRA Terrorism in Films Abstract The paper begins by asserting that -terrorism‖ is a social construct based on discourse from a particular historical context, and that our understanding of terrorism is fashioned by that discourse. It goes on to argue that film, as a powerful medium of popular culture, generates meaning of social events and gives filmgoers a feeling of reality; film functions as a second view on the world, guiding audiences from reel to real. The study shows how the forty-year long (1968-2008) history of IRA terrorism is portrayed through a selection of eight films, and the -articulation‖ and -interpellation‖ are studied empirically through the portrayal of terrorism in these films. The discourse on terrorism is analyzed in terms of discourse productivity, and the study uses Foucault's genealogy to trace the -history of present-day IRA terrorism.‖ The findings show that discursive formations are displayed as four different features of IRA terrorism constructed by film language and textual language. These different features reveal the discontinuity of the discourse that is framed by particular time periods. The paper concludes that IRA terrorism (and the acts of IRA terrorists), as portrayed in the eight...

Fransson, Johan January 2014 (has links)

'The affirmation of Behan?' : an understanding of the politicisation process of the Provisional Irish Republican Movement through an organisational analysis of splits from 1969 to 1997

Morrison, John F. January 2010 (has links)
One of the foremost reasons for the success of the Northern Irish Peace Process has been the ability of the national leadership of the Provisional Republican Movement to bring the majority of their membership away from the armed campaign and towards the acceptance of peaceful politics. This dissertation analyses how they were able to achieve this. This is carried out by considering the processes of the four major splits in modern day Irish republicanism from 1969 to 1997. Each split was analysed so as to derive why the split took place and why one side was more successful than the other in the aftermath. The cases were used to test a stage-based process model of split designed by the author. The data from thirty-eight semi-structured interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This analysis treated the three Provisional splits as three micro-processes within the macro-process of Provisional Republican involvement in the ‘Troubles', as it did the two Official splits with respect to the Official macro-process of involvement. The results of the analysis showed that the success of the later Provisional leadership was significantly tied to their method of changing strategies, tactics and policies one step at a time rather than by attempting to implement a variety of substantial changes within a short space of time as the leadership of the 1960s endeavoured to. This research outlines how the acceptance of peaceful politics for a terrorist organisation is a gradual stage-based process and that in order to be successful the significant changes must be implemented in a patient manner.
