Cultural Memory in Contemporary Narrative: Andrea Camilleri's Montalbano Series

Eckert, Elgin January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation discusses Italy’s bestselling author Andrea Camilleri’s series of Montalbano crime novels. It poses the question of what makes Camilleri’s series so successful in the contemporary literary marketplace and if his success is a representation of Italian culture (and by extension, the postmodern or post-postmodern Italian literary scene). This dissertation deals with Camilleri and his success from a narrative literary point of view. It examines Camilleri’s work from several different perspectives, placing it within the vaster context of Italian literature while also taking a meticulous look at Camilleri as the author who has managed to free a literary genre from its previous confines and opened new boundaries for Italian literature. The dissertation demonstrates how Andrea Camilleri provides a "security blanket" for his readers: by including many elements of a common cultural memory, he keeps his readers safely anchored. These elements include a long list of recurring characters that function almost like the chorus in a Greek play. Certain thematic elements, such as Montalbano’s perpetual search for Justice, and his struggle to combine the written law with the law of men are a topoi of Western literature, as are the antonyms eros/thanatos as well as food and death, which Camilleri heavily employs. The Sicilian author manages to root his work deeply within a literary tradition through direct citations, and explicit and implicit references to the canon, but also breaks new ground and manages to move Italian literature a step forward. In front of this apparently nostalgic background, the Sicilian author plays with and invents many new components in his works, satisfying thus the Italian need for the "known" with the pleasure of a discovery of the "unknown" or the "new", which is a major reason for his success. Camilleri participates in a (post)modern shift of horizons, but does not radically challenge his reader’s "expectations". His series of Montalbano mysteries presents literature of a high level that almost by chance becomes part of an "immediate" literary canon, but does not set out with the ambition to become part of "the canon". / Romance Languages and Literatures

The modern intellectual negotiating the generic system : Italo Calvino and the adventure of literary cognition

Bolongaro, Eugenio. January 1997 (has links)
This thesis explores the function of literary genres in the production and reception of the literary text, examines the ideological significance of the generic system operative in postwar Italy, and analyzes the five novels written by Italo Calvino from 1950 to 1963. The emphasis is on the relationship between the author's ethico-political stance and his negotiations of the generic system. The first part of the study (Chapters I--III) develops the theoretical tools and historical parameters which are applied to the textual analyses carried out in the second part (Chapters IV--VII). In Chapter I the notion of literariness is examined against the background of recent criticism. The distinctiveness of the literary text is found to reside in the cognitive performance it makes possible. This performance is then analyzed relying on the categories of sense and reference developed by the theory of Possible Worlds. This leads to an examination of two strategies---realist and non-realist---for the articulation of reference, which in turn raises the issue of the role of literary genres in the dialogical interaction mediated by the text. The second chapter focuses on the producer of the text. A connection is established between the epistemic configuration of "modernity" and the emergence of a particular type of producer, namely the "intellectual," who is also the primary interlocutor of "modern" literature. This analysis is then brought to bear, via Gramsci, on the particular situation of twentieth-century intellectuals in Italy. The third chapter provides a panorama of postwar Italy, with an emphasis on the relationship between political events and cultural developments such as the emergence of neorealism as the dominant literary current. The chapters in the second part present a reading of the five novels written by Calvino between 1950 and 1963, namely: I giovani del Po, Il visconte dimezzato, Il barone rampante, Il cavaliere inesistente, and La giornata d'uno scrutatore.

Women's writing and the "anxiety of authorship" in nineteenth-century Italy : Bruno Sperani and others

Balletti-Thomas, Joanne. January 1996 (has links)
As women's literature emerged in late nineteenth-century Italy, female authors encountered many obstacles. Foremost among them was the near-total absence of Italian female literary role models. Female writers often expressed ambivalence towards the writing of other women, which was considered inferior to male writing. However, their reverence for male writers revealed how conflictive their identities as writers were, and it was an impediment to the establishment of a serious women's literary tradition. In addition to such personal conflicts, these writers also faced the challenge of gaining acceptance by the male-dominated literary community and by their readers. These two groups expected that women's writing conform to a moral code which did not apply to men's writing. This thesis is an analysis of the specific problems that female novelist Bruno Sperani and others faced as they strove to establish themselves in Italian literature.

January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This study consists of an analysis of the female character in a few short-stories from the books Il paradiso (1970) and Boh (1976) by the Italian writer Alberto Moravia (1907-1990), who conceived his work both in prose (short-stories, novellas and novels) as in plays and film scripts. Furthermore, another primary objective of the research was the complete translation of thirteen short stories from these books, inasmuch as there are no Brazilian Portuguese translations of this corpus. As theoretical bases, it was used Gérard Genette's Discours du récit (2007), Lilia Crocenzi's La donna nella narrativa A. Moravia (1964) and Antonio Candido's A personagem de ficção (1987). It is essential to emphasize that in all the shortstories the female characters are homo-diegetic narrators (Genette, 1972). These books were chosen because their stories shed light on some key themes regarding Moravia's poetics. For instance, most of stories contain thematic cores as the lassitude of the individual towards reality, the body seen as a product and an object of consumption, fetishism, social hypocrisy, sex, anger and angst. The protagonists strugle until the last moment trying to deal with the intricate situations of their lives. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, everything is reduced to a vision of an apathetic and disenchanted world. Through convencionalização (CANDIDO, 1987), Moravia could expose the neurotic psychology of his protagonists, portraying them as cynical and distant women. The simple structured language, nearly deprived of ornaments, also reflects this distance. It is believed, notwithstanding, that the oral tone, sometimes rather prominant in some of the short-stories can be understood as the elegiac confessions of these characters who enjoy the privileged position of homo-diegetic narrators who...

Bribes et murmures : étude sur l'aridité et la fragmentation dans l'oeuvre en vers et en prose de Camillo Sbarbaro / Scraps and whispers : study about aridity and fragmentation in Camillo Sbarbaro's prose and poetry

Jeannin, Clémence 20 November 2017 (has links)
Camillo Sbarbaro (1888-1967) is a ligurian poet whose work in prose and poetry is characterised by its minimalism. Through the form of the fragment and its stark style, the poetic language is stripped down to the essential. This thesis is a study about the concepts of aridity and fragmentation, halfway between Sbarbaro’s vision of the world and his peculiar style. Trying to go beyond the mere observation of a rhetorical starkness, my aim is to analyse precisely how Sbarbaro’s style could be described and defined, opting for a comparative reading of his prose and poetry, in order to show how the author breaks down the barriers between genres. Avoiding to sanctify the individuality of this style, the links between the writer and his own time are reported, since his literary career and the development of his style are influenced by traditional models and by contemporary movements, among which the Italian avant-gardes of the 20th century. Sbarbaro’s style is partially made of exogenous patterns and does not exclude diversity. The author’s variations and his translations show that his style, despite its general poverty, can sometimes tend to increase the initial literarity of the text. Plus, there is no absolute contradiction between the minimalist aridity of Sbarbaro’s style and the relief – or emphasis – of some stylistic devices, nor the fragmentation prevents the author from constructing complex sentence structures or textual sequences, as if the syntagmatic relations prevailed over the paradigmatic organisation. Sbarbaro’s style is the result of a tension between the starkness and the relief of figures, and between discontinuity and the syntagmatic structures.

Roda, Regiane Rafaela January 2017 (has links)
Abstract: The novel I Malavoglia (1881), by Giovanni Verga, has been adapted twice to film: the first one, by the Milanese Luchino Visconti, in 1948, La terra trema: episodio del mare, important masterpiece of Italian Neorealism; and the second one by the Sicilian Pasquale Scimeca, in 2010, Malavoglia. For both adaptations, the moment of production was extremely important for the rewriting of a realistic novel from the XIXth century and instituted a deep and significant relationship between history and society to understand those works as autonomous artistic realizations. From Hutcheon's concept of adaptation (2013) and Stam's studies (2008 and 2013), this work was based on understanding the adaptation process supported by updating, i.e., the literary narrative transported to a brand new historical context, e. g, the years after World War II and the first years of the Third Millennium, to analyze the dialogues between the films and the adapted text and how they extended their own meanings when they brought the narrative up to date, holding on the novel but enlarging its overall signification. The analysis of that temporal dislodgement, in which it's possible to find social questions relevant to the their moments of production, indicating and identifying historical and real elements to the audience, led us to conclude that the updating allowed an intimate connection between the moment of production of those cinematographic works and the transport of elements of reality to the fictional story that deeply changed the ways of interpretation and determined the critical and ideological bases of those rewritings, the final goal of those texts' transformations and the strategies for reconstruction of the meanings to create films that revealed themselves to be portraits of the time and society, composing, side by side with the novel, a human document / Riassunto: Il romanzo I Malavoglia (1881) di Giovanni Verga è stato adattato due volte per il Cinema: la prima volta, dal milanese Luchino Visconti, nel 1948, La terra trema: episodio del mare, un importante capolavoro del neorealismo italiano; la seconda, dal siciliano Pasquale Scimeca, nel 2010, Malavoglia. / Doutor
