Electronic phase behaviors in spin-orbit coupled magnets at the localized and itinerant limits

Chen, Xiang January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Stephen Wilson / The magnetic interaction in materials generally can be categorized into two extremes: localized and itinerant. This work will focus on the electronic and magnetic properties of two prototypical magnetic compounds, which fall into the opposite extremes, i:e:, the spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr₂IrO₄ (Sr214) described by the localized Heisenberg model and the itinerant helical (nearly-ferromagnetic) metal MnSi pictured with band or Stoner magnetism. The single layered cuprate analogue Sr₂IrO₄ has attracted considerable attentions in recent years, due to its unusual electronic and magnetic properties and the potential to access superconducting states. The exotic jeff = 1/2 ground state for the Ir⁴⁺ (5d⁵) ions results from the delicate balance of competing/cooperating energy scales, such as the stronger spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in 5d materials as compared to 3d transition metal oxides (TMOs), crystal electric field (CEF) splitting and electron-electron correlations. Superconducting states are theoretically predicted to be achievable if sufficient carriers are introduced into this spin-orbit assisted compound, which later triggers tremendous experimental works toward the realization of superconductivity. Here in this work a combined study of various probes, such as transport, magnetization, X-ray and neutron scattering measurements, focusing on the electronic and magnetic properties, is presented in the perturbed spin-orbit coupled Mott (SOM) state. Specifically in electron doped (Sr₁₋ₓLaₓ)₂IrO₄, a detailed mapping of magnetism with respect to electron doping is presented, demonstrating the gradual transition from long range magnetic order in parent state, to intermediate short range order, and eventually into the incommensurate (IC) spin density wave (SDW) state with increasing electron doping. Our picture supports the conjecture that the quenched Mott phases in electron-doped Sr₂IrO₄ and hole doped La₂CuO₄ share common competing electronic phases. On the other hand, the prototypical itinerant metal MnSi is examined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our experimental data directly demonstrate the collapse of linear spin wave theory for localized Heisenberg magnets in the large energy limit, although the low energy dispersion is still described by the ferromagnetic spin wave theory. Most importantly, our observations display the chimney-like dispersion spectrum up to the energy scale of at least 240 meV, which is more than one order of magnitude larger than the Heisenberg interaction energy scale. For the first time, solid characterizations of Stoner excitations in itinerant helimagnet (nearly ferromagnetic) have been demonstrated up to an exceedingly large energy scale. Our intriguing results will greatly promote further understanding and exploration of Stoner excitations in itinerant magnets. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. An Itinerant Architect

Hunt, Gordon 22 May 2015 (has links)
An itinerant architect—one who learns, teaches, and practices architecture on the road—has the ability to improve spaces that would otherwise never reach their fullest potential. The profession of architecture as it stands is insufficient and does not properly address what people need. As a means for educating and improving space, an itinerant architect involves those unfamiliar with their own design abilities and needs throughout the design process, encouraging the appropriate customisation of their environments. This thesis follows an itinerant architect in three stages. In the first he navigates the metropolis of Lima, where a series of interventions is completed as a means to understanding the capital city. He then returns to Canada and in the second chapter revisits familiar territories where he gains different perspectives through several additional projects. The third and final chapter follows his travels throughout Southeast Asia as he experiences what it means to practice architecture as a true itinerant. The itinerant architect self-educates: he learns by doing. In stripping the profession down to its first principles, he improves space at a fundamental level. Lessons are learned as he abandons the comforts of the familiar to pursue the challenge of creating in a foreign place. It is in these unfamiliar situations that an itinerant architect thrives; challenges are welcomed, the vernacular is embraced, and experiences are gained.

"Eu" e o "outro" : executivos expatriados e itinerantes vivenciando uma nova realidade cultural no âmbito profissional e pessoal

Wagner, Linde January 2009 (has links)
This is an exploratory-descriptive research, with the objective to understand how the expatriate and itinerant executives are experiencing a new cultural reality in a professional and personal ambit. The researched problem consist in identify and analyze the barriers and facilitators that the expatriate and itinerary executives are exposed to when performing professional activities in other countries, and use this knowledge to develop ways to facilitate the intercultural contact, focusing on the itinerate executive. The data was collected using an open questionnaire with forty executives from a transnational company (fourteen expatriates’ executives, eleven returned expatriate executives and fifteen itinerant executives). Content analyze methodology was used to analyze the answers given to the questionnaire. The results are presented in three groups of categories: twenty initial categories, posterior rearranged in nine intermediary categories and, at last, synthesize in three final categories, which are: the preparation for the contact with other cultures, the contact with other cultures and developing interculturality. The obtained results indicate the importance that not only expatriate executives should receive intercultural training, but also itinerant executives, which transit the different cultures of the various transnational company localities, need a cultural training to base the intercultural contact. This research also indicates needed characteristics of the itinerant executives and the importance of the previous knowledge of the local idiom.

Voice, Itinerant, and Air : a performance and analytical guide to the solo flute works of Toru Takemitsu

Robinson, Elizabeth A. 06 July 2011 (has links)
This study presents the three solo flute works of Toru Takemitsu and their common traits, in order to create a comprehensive understanding of the works individually, and as a subgroup of Takemitsu’s works. Each piece makes use of the Japanese concept of ma, or space, as a structural device, hollow-tone trills and multiphonics, and the layering of several nonmusical programmatic inspirations are featured in each work. Voice was inspired by the poetry of Shuzo Takiguchi and combines theatrical elements in the style of Japanese Noh theater. Itinerant: In Memory of Isamu Noguchi was Takemitsu’s dedication to his friend, the artist Isamu Noguchi. The two shared an interest in international identities, which Takemitsu sought to create using wind and shakuhachi flute as programmatic references. Finally, Air was written as a sketch for a flute concerto. It contains each of Takemitsu’s compositional traits in a more traditional Western framework. Takemitsu’s flute works imitate the shakuhachi and Noh flutes as Takemitsu’s attempt to bridge Japanese and Western musical elements. Each of these compositional elements appears throughout Takemitsu’s catalog, which this study discusses briefly, and are especially prevalent in his works for solo flute. / School of Music
