"Help, everybody's struggeling with what this is?" : En innehållsanalys av Diane Sawyers framställning av Bruce Jenner / "Help, everybody's struggeling with what this is?" : A content analysis of Diane Sawyers depiction of Bruce Jenner

Tolinsson, Sara, Eriksson, Hanna January 2016 (has links)
The American society is dominated by a heterosexual powerstructure with norm-filled social values. It is difficult for norm-breaking humans who live outside of the gender stereotypical social model, this includes the group of transgenders. The renowned olympic decathlon athlete Bruce Jenner, also known from the TV-series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, came out as a transgender woman in April, 2015, which aroused a great news reporting. This is a qualitative content analysis with the aim to examine Diane Sawyer’s depiction of Bruce Jenner during the interview in the TV-show ABC 20/20. Sawyer is a prominent mediaprofile in the USA and got sole rights to make the last interview with Bruce Jenner before he transitioned to become a woman. We based our method out of the symptomatic reading to understand the underlying message of the questions asked in the interview and have used Selby and Cowdery's three-stage model as an analysis tool when we created our analysis framework. Furthermore, we have applied this analysis schedule on selected key scenes that we transcribed from the interview in order to get answers to our thesis questions. The result of our thesis is that Sawyer has steered the questions asked in the interview, how they are formulated, and through it controlled the depiction of Jenner in the program. Sawyer questions to Jenner was sometimes chareterized by ignorance and prejudice for transgender, however the overall impression of the interview is that she depicted Jenner in a way that was positive and advantageous for him.

Henry Jenner and the Celtic Revival in Cornwall

Rayne, Samantha January 2012 (has links)
This thesis seeks to explore the influence of Henry Jenner as one of the most prominent figures of the Celtic Revival in Cornwall and in the wider Celtic community. To contextualise this, it will examine the image of the Celts as a people in the first half of the twentieth century and the assertion of Celtic identity in that period through the Celtic Revival. The opening chapter examines the concepts of nations and nationalism, particularly Celtic nationalism. The second chapter focuses on the Victorian era as a motivating force for Henry Jenner and others to ‘write back’ against a long and insidious discourse of discrimination. Chapter Three goes on to look at how the political situation in both Britain and Ireland came to influence the nature of Celtic identity assertion and also the extent to which Jenner’s own political views impacted on the nature of Cornwall’s Celtic Revival. In Chapter Four the impact of tourism on Cornwall, and on Cornish identity, is examined, particularly how the image of Cornwall as a Celtic nation created by Jenner and others was embraced and manipulated by that industry. Chapter Five looks at the consequences of image manipulation on tourist-dependent regions. The final chapter concentrates more specifically on the work of Jenner and the Old Cornwall Societies, and the thesis concludes by appraising the influence of the ideas and beliefs of Henry Jenner on our contemporary vision of Cornwall. It focuses particularly on how the predominance of memory created a haunted identity which was embraced by the burgeoning tourist industry and examines how this identity has subsequently impacted on the economic well-being of the region. But it also concludes that Jenner’s legacy endures in so many of the positive images of, and statements about, Cornwall today.

In 1798, Edward Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine by subjecting to experimental testing the hypothesis that inoculation of cowpox matter passed to and among humans protected against smallpox. Later on, in 1888, Louis Pasteur applied the method of passages between different animal species to attenuate infectious matter of various diseases and tested the effectiveness of the resulting vaccines. The aim of the present study was to identify continuities and discontinuities in the development of vaccines for nearly one hundred years within various contexts like the mythical-religious, the empirical and the medicalscientific. The study of the scientific work performed in Pasteur s laboratory allowed us map the development of the concepts of vaccine and vaccination, as well as to outline changes in the methods to elaborate vaccines for avian cholera, anthrax and rabies. In addition, we were able to locate common elements in Jenner and Pasteur s ideas and methods, to wit, passage of infectious matter between species, attenuation of virulence via interspecific inoculation, non recurrence of disease in vaccinated individuals, and verification of the immunizing action of vaccines / O desenvolvimento de vacinas é uma importante elaboração científica que veio a se constituir como ferramenta para a prevenção de doenças e conservação da saúde populacional.

Isberg, Emma, Selander, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to find out how the influencer and businesswoman Kylie Jenner is received by the public on her Instagram account compared with how she portray herself. This essay is based on a qualitative research which reaches out to the theories gender, representation, private and public, and the two-step hypothesis. The results are based on answers from six focus groups with a total of 24 participants. The results shows that the informants longs for role models on social media and most of them agree that Kylie Jenner does not live up to the expectations that come from being a role model. The aim of this essay is to identify the characteristics of our informants answers and they have resulted in three main themes; Instagram as social medium, influencers impact on Instagram and Kylie Jenner on Instagram. The informants' views on influencers are seemingly negative because of preconceived opinions regarding the profession which shows at an early stage of the resulting part.
