Text in Afrikaans / 'n Opname is onder geregistreerde verpleegkundiges in diens van plaaslike besture onderneem met die doel om 'n perspektief op die gehalte van hul werkslewe te verkry, faktore te identifiseer wat hulle motiveer om 'n loopbaan in plaaslike besture te kies en die faktore te identifiseer wat werkstevredenheid positief /negatief be"lnvloed. Ontleding van die data het aangedui dat negatiewe faktore in die werkslewe soos onder andere die gebrek aan deelname in besluitneming en beperkte loopbaangeleenthede werksontevredenheid tot gevolg kan he. Positiewe faktore soos die geleentheid om gereelde diensure te werk en die status wat geregistreerde verpleegkundiges in die gemeenskap geniet, bevorder werkstevredenheid. Dit is hoofsaaklik hul belangstelling in primere gesondheidsorg en die geleentheid om gereelde diensure te werk wat geregistreerde verpleegkundiges motiveer om 'n loopbaan in plaaslike besture te kies. Aanbevelings om die kwaliteit van die werkslewe van geregistreerde verpleegkundiges te verbeter en werkstevredenheid te bevorder, is geformuleer. / A survey was undertaken among registered nurses in the service of local authorities to obtain a perspective on the quality of their worklife, to identify factors that influence registered nurses in local authorities and to identify those factors that influence the quality of the worklife and job satisfaction positively /negatively. Analysis of the data indicated that negative factors in the worklife such as limited participation in decision-making and limited career opportunities could lead to dissatisfaction in the work situation. Positive factors such as the ability to work regular hours and the status of registered nurses in the community promote job satisfaction. It is mainly their interest in primary health care and the opportunity to work regular hours of duty, that motivate registered nurses to choose a career in local authorities. Recommendations to improve the quality of the worklife of registered nurses and to promote job satisfaction were formulated. / Nursing Science / M.A. (Verpleegkunde)

Agency nurses’ perceptions of job satisfaction within critical care units in private healthcare institutions

Thesis (MCur)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Agency-nursing work refers to nursing services provided by agency nurses employed on a casual, contracted basis. Agency-nursing has become more common in nursing practice in South Africa. This group of nurses play a significant role within the health care industry for both public and private sector. Given the pivotal role that nurses play in caring for the health of others, it is important to understand what motivates agency nurses in terms of job satisfaction. The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions of agency nurses regarding job satisfaction within critical care units in private health care institutions in the Western Cape. A qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach was applied. A sample size of n=10 was drawn from a total population of N=553, using random sampling technique. A semi-structured interview guide was designed based on the objectives of the study and validated by experts in the field before data collection. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Ethics Committee at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Stellenbosch. Permission to conduct the research was obtained from the participating nursing agency and consent was given in writing. The presentation of the results was categorised into themes and sub-themes emerged from the data analysis. The five clusters of themes that emerged were reasons for doing agency work, experiences with hospital staff, allocation of agency nurses, communication of information and staff development. The findings support Herzberg’s theory on motivation factors in terms of what motivates workers to excel in their performance. Agency nurses experienced both positive and negative aspects with regards to job satisfaction. The results of the study suggest the need to include revision and implementation of human resource policies and practices to include the nurses’ “voice” in an effort to provide a more supportive work environment. Further research is recommended. Key Words: Agency nurse, nursing agency, job satisfaction. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Agentskapverplegingswerk verwys na verplegingsdienste wat voorsien word deur agentskapverpleegsters wat op ’n tydelike, gekontrakteerde basis in diens geneem word. Agentskapverpleging het meer algemene gebruik in die verpleegpraktyk in Suid-Afrika geword. Hierdie groep verpleegsters speel ’n belangrike rol in die gesondheidsbedryf vir beide die openbare en die private sektor. Gegee die deurslaggewende rol wat verpleegsters speel in die gesondheidsversorging van ander mense, is dit belangrik om te verstaan wat agentskapverpleegsters motiveer vanuit die oogpunt van werksbevrediging. Die doel van die studie was om die persepsies en ervarings van agentskapverpleegsters ten opsigte van werksbevrediging te ondersoek binne die waakeenhede in private gesondheidsorg-inrigtings in die Wes-Kaap. ’n Kwalitatiewe navorsingsontwerp met ’n fenomenologiese benadering is toegepas. ’n Monstergrootte van n=10 is geneem uit ’n populasie van N= 553 deur die ewekansige steekproeftegniek te gebruik. ’n Semi-gestruktureerde onderhoudgids was ontwerp en gebaseer op die doelwitte van die studie en was deur deskundiges op hierdie gebied, voor die insameling van data, gelding verklaar. Etiese goedkeuring vir die studie was verkry van die Etiese Komitee van die Fakulteit van Gesondheidswetenskappe, Stellenbosch Universiteit. Goedkeuring om die navorsing te doen, was verkry van die deelnemende agentskap en toestemming was op skrif geplaas. Die voorgelegde resultate was gekategoriseer in temas en subtemas wat uit die data-analise voortgespruit het. Die vyf groepe van temas wat hieruit gespruit het, is redes vir die keuse om agentskapwerk te doen, ervarings met hospitaalpersoneel, die toewysing van agentskapverpleegsters, kommunikasie van inligting en personeelontwikkeling. Die bevindinge het onthul dat Herzberg se teorie oor motiveringsfaktore werkers aangemoedig het om te presteer in die uitvoering van hulle pligte. Werksbevrediging is volgehou deur die agentskapverpleegster. Die bevindings dui op die behoefte om die hersiening en implementering van menslike hulpbronbeleidsverklarings en -praktyke in te sluit sodat die verpleegster se stem gehoor kan word in ’n poging om ’n meer ondersteunende werkomgewing te voorsien. Job satisfaction of call centre representatives.

The aim of the study is to prove that a correlation exist between job satisfaction and the levels of absenteeism, turnover, performance and customer satisfaction. Data were collected using the Job Satisfaction Survey which is a self-administered questionaire to measure job satisfaction of call centre representatives. Additional data were collected using the company's existing measures for measuring absenteeism, turnover, performance and customer satisfaction. The study found a relationship between job satisfaction and performance, between job satisfaction and turnover and between job satisfaction and customer service. However, no relationship was found between job satisfaction and absenteeism, which is consistent with previous studies.

The Facet Satisfaction Scale: Enhancing the measurement of job satisfaction.

Job satisfaction is an important job-related attitude that has been linked to various outcomes for both the organization and its employees. In spite of this, researchers of the construct disagree about how job satisfaction is defined and measured. This study proposes the use of the Facet Satisfaction Scale, a new scale of measurement for job satisfaction that is based on more recent definitions of the construct. Reliability and preliminary predictive validity studies were conducted in order to determine the utility of this scale. Next steps in scale development are discussed.

Comparative Analysis of Management and Employee Job Satisfaction and Policy Perceptions.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of job satisfaction as defined by management and nonmanagement employees and to compare both parties' perceptions of organizational benefits to a list prepared by the organization's benefit personnel. Turnover is costly to the organization, both in money and in the impact it has on those individuals remaining with the organization. Every effort should be undertaken to reduce the amount of turnover within the organization. A contributing factor leading to turnover may be a gap between what the employees believe is important to them and what management believes is important to the employees. The boundaries of the gap need to be identified before any effort can be made to reduce or bridge the gap. Once the boundaries are identified, policies can be analyzed and the possibility of reducing the gap investigated. Management as a whole must be aware of the needs and wants of their employees before any attempt to develop a retention strategy is undertaken. This knowledge can be acquired only through two-way communication with the employee. The communication process includes the simple process of asking employees for this information and then listening to how they respond. This study suggests that little difference exists in perception of job satisfaction importance for gender, age group, length of time with the organization, topic training hours, and between management and nonmanagement employees. However, perception gaps exist between the job satisfaction items addressed by organizational policies and procedures and those perceived by employees. Additional studies that include a number of varied organizations are needed before extensive generalizations can be made.

Job satisfaction and the intention to quit by employees in a steel manufacturing company in Gauteng

(Human Resource Management, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / The main purpose of the study was to examine the level of job satisfaction and intention to quit, by employees in a steel manufacturing company. The research methodology used to conduct the study was a combination of a literature review and an empirical study. Due to the small size of the population, no sampling was done although a census had been drawn. The primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The measuring instrument contained 25 items. For the main survey, data from 181 respondents were collected and analysed. Participants in the study involved engineers, operators, technicians, artisans, administrative staff and safety, health and environmental specialists in the steel manufacturing company. Data were analysed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the measuring instrument were computed to establish construct validity. Content validity of the scale was ascertained by pre-testing the questionnaire with employees in the steel manufacturing company. Factor analysis was conducted for variables in Section B of the research instrument. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics on the demographic information of respondents. The results were also interpreted through the factor analysis and correlation analysis. The findings regarding employee’s perceptions or feelings about job satisfaction and employees’ intentions to quit their current organisation revealed that the supervision variable is positively correlated with job variable while it is negatively correlated with intention to quit. In addition, job variable is also negatively correlated with intention to quit. This means that effective supervisors are likely to improve employees’ job satisfaction hence decrease their intentions to quit their current organisation and vise versa. In addition, when employees are satisfied with their job environment, this will decrease their intentions to quit their current organisation and vise versa. Judging from the results from respondents, it is clear that when employees are provided with a job that rewards them for their effort and provides opportunities for advancement, they will be satisfied and therefore more likely to stay in the organisation. Hence, the employees at Babcock Ntuthuko Generations are satisfied and they are not intending to leave the organisation. The research information collected through this study can be used to encourage Babcock Ntuthuko management to continue providing employees with a conducive working enviroment to ensure that current and new employees are retained.

Employees' job satisfaction, organisational commitment and intention to stay at an international hotel in Lesotho

Employees’ productivity is largely related to their level of job satisfaction. Lumley, Coetzee, Tladinyane and Ferreira (2011:101) are of the view that since job satisfaction involves employees’ motions, it influences an organisation’s well-being with regard to job productivity, employee turnover, absenteeism and life satisfaction Therefore, it is important for an organisation to study the relationships between JS, OC and ITS. A survey questionnaire was devised to collect the information for job satisfaction, organisational commitment and intention to stay from each employee. Two hundred and twenty employees responded to the survey. This study used a quantitative research paradigm and a descriptive research method. Random sampling was deemed appropriate for this study, these choices are motived for in the main study. Participants were asked to complete three test instruments, namely, a Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS), an Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) and an Intention to Stay Questionnaire (ITSQ). After analysing the data, the researcher found that there is a relatively strong correlation between job satisfaction, organisational commitment and intention to stay. Generally, higher levels of job satisfaction will lead to higher levels of organisational commitment which in turn will lead to employees staying at organisations. The results indicate that all three variables: JS‚ OC‚ and ITS have positive and significant inter-relationships. Findings and recommendations of this study are important to the management as they indicate the need to develop strategies to deal with the needs of those employees who exhibit low level of organisational commitment. The findings of this study provide valuable insights that can enable the management to create a satisfied and committed workforce

Job Satisfaction of Registered Nurses in a Patient Focused Care Team

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the job satisfaction and motivating potential of nursing jobs would be higher for nurses using Patient Focused Care (PFC) compared with nurses not using PFC. Nurses from a large metropolitan hospital served as subjects. Data were collected using three instruments designed to measure job satisfaction and motivating potential. Those instruments were the Job Diagnostic Survey, the Job Descriptive Inventory, and the McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale. It was hypothesized that nurses working on PFC nursing units would demonstrate greater job satisfaction and motivating potential than nurses working on non-PFC nursing units. The hypotheses were not supported. Results were explained by, among other things, accounting for the nature of the instruments used. The two instruments which gave data counter to the hypothesized direction were not nursing-oriented.
