Job satisfaction of staff members at two faculties of an academic institution

M.Com. (Human Resource Management) / This research focused on the measurement of job satisfaction in two related faculties in a higher education institution comprising 300 academic staff. The research was quantitative and non-experimental. The Job Descriptive Index was used as the basis to determine the most significant factors that contribute to job satisfaction. Five factors were identified, namely the actual job, supervision, relations with co-workers, remuneration and promotion. Sub-factors relating to these factors were identified through an in-depth literature study. A questionnaire was compiled Oil the basis of essence of each of these sub-factors. A statistical analysis was done' using forced ranking, factor analysis, reliability analysis (Cronbach alpha), Friedman tests, spiderweb plots and correspondence analysis. From the results it is apparent that academics consider their work to be interesting, rewarding and challenging. Academics feel respected in their work context. Academics are satisfied with their supervision, which includes adequate planning and communication and the acknowledgement of excellent work. Academics are satisfied with their relations with co-workers. This includes a pleasant work environment, responsible co-workers and team work. Academics do not agree about remuneration. Most of the academics feel underpaid and regard promotion as a sensitive issue. Deviations in the results include routine work, fairness in remuneration, promotions based on equity policies and infrequent promotions. On the basis of the results of the study, it was recommended that the workload of academics should be examined, fairness in remuneration should be apparent, sound communication between the institution and its employees and the benefit of equity policies in promotions should be highlighted.

Job satisfaction of call centre representatives.

The aim of the study is to prove that a correlation exist between job satisfaction and the levels of absenteeism, turnover, performance and customer satisfaction. Data were collected using the Job Satisfaction Survey which is a self-administered questionaire to measure job satisfaction of call centre representatives. Additional data were collected using the company's existing measures for measuring absenteeism, turnover, performance and customer satisfaction. The study found a relationship between job satisfaction and performance, between job satisfaction and turnover and between job satisfaction and customer service. However, no relationship was found between job satisfaction and absenteeism, which is consistent with previous studies.

Thesis (MBA) -- University of Limpopo, 2011 / The change or transformation of higher education institutions in South Africa (SA) was mandated by the government, as a response to address past disparities that prevailed as a result of the apartheid government. These disparities, included inter alia, improving access to higher education institutions, improving staff and student equity and improving the quality of higher education throughput. The merger of higher education institutions in SA, like any other institution in another country that had undergone a similar form of change, mostly share the similar experiences, especially if the mergers are mandated by the government. The fundamental issue and the inspiration of the study is the impact of the merger, whether directly or indirectly, on employees’ job satisfaction, organisational commitment and intention to leave. The target population of the study was the university of Limpopo employees, clustered into three categories, viz. the academic, administrative and support services personnel. The study used a random sampling method. A questionnaire, with a combination of closed and open ended questions, was used to collect data. The results indicated that the respondents were not satisfied with their jobs had low organisational commitment and some intentions to leave the employ of the university. However, they indicated that the merger had very little effect on these results.

From day's ceremonial, the nursing profession, was held in high esteem and was the most cherished health career amongst the black community. The profession popularised by Florence Nightingale, alias, "The lady with the lamp," highly emphasised absolute virtues, such as selflessness, dedication and hard work, to mention just a few. Some individuals like the late Sister Lekgetha and Cecilia Makiwana later became epitome of the health profession and were marvelled by the community at large. The paradigm has shifted somewhat, unfortunately, with today's nurses capable of leaving their death-bed-ridden patients in hospital wards, to take to the streets in demand of salary increases. Their hostile attitudes are perceived in community circles as irresponsible and uncaring, culminating in poor health service deliveries at health centres. Nurses, on the other hand, cite a number of issues that have rendered the health profession a disaster, in which it find itself. These range from the working conditions to the job description as rolled out by the supervisor and the Department. A strategic analysis on the meaning of work: a focus on the fashion retail industry

The primary objective of this research study was to strategically analyse the meaning of work for fashion retail industry employees with the aim of developing a calling orientation to work.A sample of 84 fashion retail industry employees from Port Elizabeth, South Africa indicated their perception of callings in work; the pathways to callings in work and job satisfaction. Furthermore, fashion retail industry employees also indicated their use of job crafting techniques as a tool to foster meaningful work. This is one of the first studies conducted on callings in work in the fashion retail industry.Findings of the study indicated that although on average fashion retail industry employees are neutral about having a calling orientation to work, 24-27% indicated to having a calling orientation to work. Furthermore the study showed that there is a positive correlation between 1) transcendent guiding force; 2) value-driven behaviour and sense and meaning; 3) identification with one’s work and person-environment fit and a calling orientation to work. The study also indicated that the presence of a transcendent guiding force and job satisfaction are the two independent variables that are influential in achieving calling orientation to work for fashion retail industry employees of Port Elizabeth. Implications and recommendations from this study are outlined.
