Gimme shelter: enka, self and society in contemporary Japan.

This study examines a genre of Japanese popular music known as enka, and the manner in which devotees of the genre and other stakeholders approach and negotiate with it. Previous academic examinations of enka have tended to locate it as a static musical embodiment of nostalgic ‘Japaneseness’. Relying upon field observations and discussions with enka devotees carried out in Tokyo and Fukushima, I argue that enka are in fact intensely ambiguous, and that the genre ultimately serves as a shelter for historically-specific listeners, one that is deeply implicated in the production of subjectivity and the social. Depending upon the manner in which they intertwine with other ‘texts’ in the listener’s life, enka can act as a homogenizing agent, or as a conduit for heterogeneity and movement – or both. This research will contribute to the advancement of our understanding both contemporary Japanese society and the role of popular music within it. / Graduate

Calidad percibida en karaokes de Lima Moderna

El objetivo del presente trabajo de investigación es determinar la calidad percibida en los servicios de karaokes de Lima Moderna. Para dicha investigación se utilizó la metodología del modelo SERVQUAL. El diseño de la investigación es un estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo y no experimental y de tipo aplicado. Se realizaron 233 encuestas digitales enviadas por conveniencia a clientes que asisten frecuentemente a los principales karaokes ubicados en los diversos distritos de Lima Moderna. Las preguntas se agruparon en cinco factores; tangibilidad, fiabilidad, capacidad de respuesta, seguridad y empatía. Los resultados evidencian la validez del instrumento utilizado para la investigación con una fiabilidad de 0,97. Como resultado del estudio de investigación, se concluye que son los factores de fiabilidad y seguridad los que influyen significativamente en la calidad percibida por los clientes del servicio de karaokes. El trabajo también investiga la relación entre factores, atributos y la calidad percibida por rangos de edad, así como comparativos entre principales distritos y karaokes de Lima Moderna. En el Perú no existen estudios que aplican el modelo SERVQUAL para medir la calidad de servicio en los servicios de entretenimiento denominados karaokes, por lo que, creemos, esta investigación servirá de base para futuros estudios sobre este rubro de negocio en Lima Moderna. / The objective of this research is to determine the perceived quality of karaoke services in modern Lima. The methodology of the SERVQUAL model was used for this research. The design of the research is a descriptive, quantitative and non-experimental study of an applied type. A total of 233 digital surveys were sent out for convenience to clients who frequently attend the main karaokes located in the various districts of Modern Lima. The questions were grouped into five factors; tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, security and empathy. The results show the validity of the instrument used for the research with a reliability of 0.97. As a result of the research study, it is concluded that it is the reliability and security factors that significantly influence the quality perceived by karaoke service clients. The work also investigates the relationship between factors, attributes and perceived quality by age ranges, as well as comparisons between main districts and karaokes in modern Lima. In Peru there are no studies that apply the SERVQUAL model to measure the quality of service in the entertainment services called karaokes, so we believe this research will serve as a basis for future studies on this business area in Modern Lima. / Tesis

Language, culture and ethnicity : interplay of ideologies within a Japanese community in Brazil

This dissertation is a sociolinguistic study of the ideologies about language, culture and ethnicity among Japanese immigrants and descendants in Brazil (hereafter, Nikkeis) who gather at a local Japanese cultural association, searching for what it means to be “Japanese” in Brazil. This study focuses on how linguistic behaviors are ideologically understood and associated with cultural activities and ethnic identities. Using the language ideologies framework, it seeks to describe the ways in which Nikkeis negotiate and create social meanings of language in both local and transnational contexts. Nikkeis are an overwhelmingly celebrated minority group in Brazil. In this context, the cultural association serves as a site where symbolic cultural differences are constructed by those Nikkeis who strive to identify themselves as a prestigious minority. This study demonstrates that the Japanese language is one of the important resources in performing the Nikkei identity. At the same time, due to an on-going language shift, Portuguese as a means of communication is becoming increasingly more important for cultural transmission. Thus, the members of the association, which include both Japanese monolinguals and Portuguese monolinguals, are in constant negotiation, trying to strike a balance between symbolic values of Japanese, pragmatic values of Portuguese, as well as their own language competencies. The goal of this project is to answer the following three research questions: 1) What social meanings do Nikkeis assign to Japanese and Portuguese, and how does this perception affect Nikkeis’ identity formation? 2) What are the characteristics of linguistic practices in the association and how do the speakers use available linguistic resources to construct identities? 3) How can this study inform us about the transforming reality of the Japanese Brazilian community in this global age? Contributions of this study include furthering of the sociolinguistic research on language ideologies, linguistic practices and identity construction in an immigrant community. It also contributes to the study of language shift, by underscoring the role of language ideologies in rationalizing language choices. This project is also significant for the study of Japanese diaspora in Latin America, providing the first sociolinguistic investigation of a Japanese cultural association in Brazil. / text
