Simplified method for design or moment end-plate connectionsBorgsmiller, Jeffrey T. 21 July 2009 (has links)
Bolted moment end-plate connections are extremely popular in the metal building industry due to economics and construction ease, yet have proven to be quite complicated from the analysis and design standpoint. Past research has shown that the design of these connections is controlled by either the strength of the end-plate, determined by yield-line analysis, or the strength of the bolts, determined by the semi-empirical Kennedy method. The calculations involved in the Kennedy bolt analysis incorporate prying action, yet are complex and extensive.
This study presents a simplified method for determining the ultimate strength of moment end-plate connections. Classic yield-line analysis is used to determine the connection capacity based on end-plate strength, and a simplified version of the Kennedy method is used to predict the connection capacity based on bolt strength with prying action. Assumptions are made that substantially reduce the calculations involved in the bolt analysis. The simplified design procedure is verified by comparison with the results of 52 previously conducted full-scale connection tests. Design recommendations are made and examples presented. / Master of Science

This dissertation analyses the current negative image given to the Vila Kennedy as a violent favela, and it has as base the representation of the old local residents. Because the majority part of them were removed from favelas cariocas during the 1970s, these residents have lived in a very different reality when one com pare with the current reality, and they have felt the changes that, during four decades, have helped to reinforce the association of their neighborhood with the favelass image well known by the presence of the drugs trade. Thereby, this research intend to question that negative image, seeking to articulate past and present as important explaining keys to the comprehension of the mechanisms which turn possible the association of the Vila Kennedys image as a favela.

Previous issue date: 2009 / This study aims at understanding the youth and the formation of social representation through biographical reports of the young participants of Projeto Agente Jovem de Desenvolvimento Social e Humano of the residential quarter Presidente Kennedy in Fortaleza, in 2007. The participating of young people in this unformed education policy leads to a job with temporality, putting them in contact with the exercise of evocating their memories and building their life projects. The relation established between memory and their external representations about education, sexuality, work and leisure time have let us to reflect about the role of the school and the family in their lives and the need to undo designed represents on the youth of poorer neighborhoods. We used as resources for such analyses, interviews with young people, texts and drawings produced by them during the activities of the project.

The 1960 Televised Presidential Debates: A Strategy for Richard NixonArnold, Harry L 01 January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, I seek to undermine the enduring myth that Richard Nixon lost the 1960 televised presidential debates because of John F. Kennedy’s superior looks and overall glamour. Although I do concede that Nixon lost the debates overall, I argue that Nixon gave his best performance in the third debate. Using Nixon’s third debate strategy as a victory paradigm, I show how Nixon could have bested Kennedy in the other debates.

The Absent Artist: Muteness and Fiction in Recent PaintingKennedy, Costa Michael 10 May 2011 (has links)
For the written component of my thesis, I am attempting to make sense of a current strain in contemporary painting which, generally speaking, tends towards reduction, humble materiality, lack of overt, didactic critique, and a scholarly interest in outmoded or overlooked art historical movements and figures. These are tendencies with which, as a painter, I feel both affinities and differences. Rather than rigidly define a “movement,” I will identify prevalent modes but also highlight individual strategies. I will begin by outlining some of the basic, underlying problems in painting today. I will then examine, as case studies, three young painters—Josephine Halvorson, Richard Aldrich, and Joe Bradley—who I feel exemplify and yet in some ways transcend this trend. I will speak about the work of each in terms of the context in which it is made. However, part of the point of this thesis is to see how individual works by these artists might be talked about apart from their “scene.” I will therefore examine a specific work by each artist in terms of the visual information it is supplies. I will go on to examine two critical reactions (and in one case a critical-fictional reaction) to this kind of work—that of Raphael Rubenstein’s “Provisional Painting” and Christopher K. Ho’s “Hirsch E.P. Rothko’s Hirsch E.P. Rothko”—in an attempt to assess how this type of work is being interpreted by the critical community. Lastly, I will provide my own explanations for why this work is being produced now, why (or if) it is relevant, and what problems it proposes for painters in the future. Although this is not a thesis that addresses my own work directly, it is my intention to use the art-critical process as a means to clarify my own concerns.
