_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The thesis The signs of memory in Milan Kundera intends to think how the images grasped by the memory, when translated through the language, become signs filled with meanings in Kundera's process of creation. In order to that we delve into Henri Bergson's theory that the memory is an instance that establishes the relationship between the body and the spirit and finds in intuition the way to reach the inner side of the human being. Our hypothesis is that Milan Kundera uses his memories as a basis for creation and, having in language a means to unveil the world, he is not limited to a closed conceptual language, but instead he uses a language that explores the extension of the meaning of the words.

Hudební inspirace v díle Milana Kundery / Musical inspiration in the works of Milan Kundera

Zemanová, Marie January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with musical inspiration on the base of the analysis of the composition and motives in Kundera's novels. Basic source of the analysis is Kundera's own reflection of modern music, its principles and functions in author's essays. The aim of the thesis is to chart sources of inspiration which mirror in Kundera's prose and other texts. We proceed from the concrete to the abstract, from analysis of motives and composition of each book, to the intellectual level which is perceptible mainly in author's essays and essaistic passages in some novels. Author's texts are dealt with chronologically. As the level of motives and themes are concerned, the musical inspiration is treated via themes, such as Beethoven and his art of variations, noisy contemporary music and the end of music in the work of Schoenberg. On the level of composition, the author writes novels using schemes of musical forms, such as theme with variations, rondo, sonata form or fugue. In his essays, he mainly examines works of composers Beethoven, Janacek, Stravinskij and Schoenberg. All three levels are connected and they influence each other. The last chapter is oriented didacticly and an option is offered how to use this topic at school. It is important to considerate cross-curricular links between literature and music.

An analysis of postmodern narrative strategies with specific reference to Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting

Patchay, Sheendadevi 09 1900 (has links)
My dissertation focuses on an analysis of postmodern narrative strategies in Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being (ULB) and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting ( BLF) . By analysing the postmodern ab/use of narrative strategies, I argue that postmodern fiction marks a decided shift from both classical realism and modernism. My dissertation has predominantly been motivated through my contention that postmodern fiction is not elitist as it has been perceived to be. Rather, I suggest that postmodern fiction ab/uses narrative strategies to deconstruct the ontological boundaries between the political and private and fiction and 'fact'. Consequently, postmodern fiction interrogates the contrived intelligibility of History. A further argument that I raise is that postmodern fiction through its (re) appropriation, subversion and use of parodic structures creates.narrative space for the Other. In order not to canonize Kundera's texts, I situate both ULB and BLF as 'nodes' within a diffuse network of intertextual discourse. My analyses of the postmodern narrative strategies in ULB and BLF, attempt to interrogate the diffuse 'nature' of postmodern fiction which resists both authorative analysis and closure. In exploring the relationship between recuperation and postmodern narrative strategies in ULB and BLF and other works and/or texts of fiction, I argue that postmodern fiction does not revel in its narrativity, it constitutes, instead, a political strategy / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / M.A. (Theory of Literature)

Sovietinės tikrovės ironizavimas Ričardo Gavelio romane „Vilniaus pokeris“ ir Milano Kunderos romane „Nepakeliama būties lengvybė“ / The irony of Soviet reality in R. Gaveli's novel "Vilnius Poker" and in M. Kundera's novel "Unbearable lightness of being"

Vaitonytė, Gintarė 16 June 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Master’s thesis analyses what victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the Lithuanian and Czech novels written within 1987-1989. Research material and sources - Milan Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1987) and Ričardas Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris (Vilnius Poker, 1989), both of which depict the Soviet reality. The choice of novels was determined by plot difference and common political situation. The theoretical part of the paper presents the theory of the possibility of ironization and irony functions. The research part of the paper analyses ironized victims of the Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė and Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris. The paper reveals that different victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the novels. The Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel is ironized through the choice of depicting life and existence, life and objective reality as irony victims. Each character tries to answer the following questions: whether what is happening in the Soviet reality is correct? Whether betrayal, prison, lie and cheapness are the things which should really prevail in the world? The concept of culture is presented differently in Kundera’s novel: a) culture promotes human maturity and reflects settled values; b) culture is a reflection of the change of values and the way of rebellion against the Soviet reality. The Soviet reality in Gavelis novel is ironized through the choice of cultural... [to full text]

Kam s populárními romány Michala Viewegha? / How to clasiffy Michal Viewegh's popular novels ?

Těšínská, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the work of Michal Viewegh from the point of view of functional and value division of literary production. It tries to prove that bipolar model, established in Czech environment, in his case does not work, since it cannot be assigned not only to highbrow literature, nor to popular literature, because the work of Viewegh is in comparison with them too sophisticated. Therefore the author proposes to revive forgotten trichotomic model of literary classification and use it for situation Viewegh's work. The author, contrary to literary criticism, is of the opinion that every single Viewegh's novel does not substantially differentiate from each other. The author supports this argument using comparative analysis of positively and negatively evaluated novels, resulting into finding that both groups despite of differences in critical assessment contain the same constitutive characteristics that are typical for midcult. This conclusion is further investigated by comparison of selected Viewegh's works with prose works of typical writers, typically low (Lanczová) and high (Kundera) literary level, through their work with love theme. Result confirms the rightness of situation of Viewegh's literary prose into the midcult: Viewegh handles love's theme in a more sophisticated and...

L’enjeu du jeu dans Risibles amours de Milan Kundera

Crous, Elsa 10 April 2013 (has links)
M.A. (French) / Milan Kundera is known for being almost obsessive in guarding his privacy, and in the manner in which he controls any translations of his writings. Despite such strictures, the works of this former exile from Czechoslovakia, who now resides in France and writes in French, have been translated and disseminated to a worldwide audience of readers. It is not only his fictional writings which have earned him kudos, but also his ventures into non-fiction, viz. literary criticism. Having April 1st as a birth date was to have a dramatic impact on Kundera, who later declared that this significant date, which is frequently associated with humorous pranks, pushed him to assume the role of philosophical fool in his writings. It is the different manifestations of games which come under scrutiny in this study, as represented in the seven short stories which make up the anthology Laughable Loves (Risibles Amours). Following an investigation of the differences between ancient and modern perception of what qualifies as ‘play’ or ‘games’, the games theories of reputed authors such as Johan Huizinga, Roger Caillois and Stuart Brown are used to form the theoretical basis of this part of the study. The research is further augmented by Eric Berne’s theory on the psychology underlying the games people play, as it manifests in interpersonal relationships. However, no study of games would be complete without investigating the dark side of play, when the game is corrupted through the actions of the players, referees or spectators, or when what starts as a battle of wills spirals into what could best be described as war games. In the pages of this anthology the reader is introduced to various characters who dare to think they can manipulate other people or events, but end up being played by those very people, or by circumstances beyond their control.
