Health in a changing South Africa : perceptions and experiences of older people in rural KwaDumisa, KwaZulu-Natal.Mngadi, Sithabile. January 2014 (has links)
Older people can be defined in different ways depending on the country’s social policies and also their health status. The health interventions overlook the vulnerability of older people regarding their individual health needs and their general susceptibility to chronic illnesses. Increasing economic disparities between races and inequalities in access to health services despite a large expansion in government social grants is another growing challenge. The major socio-economic changes has also contributed and enhanced the health challenges of older people in rural areas. This study aims to investigate the health perceptions and experiences of older people in rural areas and explore the factors that influence the quality of health of older people in South Africa. The study relied on focus group interviews (FGIs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs) to acquire an in-depth assessment and overall understanding of the life course and health perceptions of older people. Results reveal that even though health has evolved in South Africa over time, more challenges continue to affect the health of older people in rural areas where there are constant issues of low socio-economic status, poverty, migration and poor education attainment. The findings also suggest that, under the new political power there has been a change in the management of health care systems. Older people in KwaDumisa also face challenges with access to health care facilities.

Urban informality as a generator for meaningful built form : towards a multi-purpose trade hub for Durban, South Africa.Ncube, Mongezi. 30 October 2014 (has links)
Urban informality is a process established by people in the informal urban context to shape existing formal cities to form new informal cities that facilitate their everyday lives. This phenomenon has grown substantially in Latin American, Asian and African cities to a point that people have transformed many of their formal post-colonial cities within these regions to informal cities that can facilitate urban informality. Instead of seeing this process as a way where people living in the informal urban context are trying to create cities and infrastructure that suite their context and way of life, architects and urban design professionals are repeatedly adopting 'western norms‘ to solve urban informality rather than facilitating it. This starts to create a gap between the architectural built form and the way people live. The research was then undertaken to bridge this gap between built form making and the lived realities in the informal urban context by using the underlying principles of urban informality defined by the people to generate meaningful built form within the South African, African context.
To achieve this, the research carried out investigations on current literature that dealt with three main principles that defined urban informality that could be used to generate an appropriate built form with the informal urban context. These principles were; socio- economic principles, emergence and the culture of urban informality and these started to suggest a flexible built form that can be adapted by its users to suit their needs. These principles were then tested against precedent and case studies to see their validity in the global and South African context. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a number of professionals that had a better understanding of the case studies than the author to make sure that the analyses and the conclusions based on those analyses were accurate.
The research findings ultimately defined an indeterminate built form that is formed through a participatory process between the collaboration of urban design professionals and the future inhabitants of the built form. This built form is 'loosely‘ defined and its inhabitants can manipulate and reconfigure it, to a certain extent, to suit the future unforeseen states of urban informality. The adaptive reuse of lost and wasted spaces within the eThekwini Municipality : a case study of the Durban Esplanade and The Point .Gungaparsad, Kelvin. 21 October 2014 (has links)
This research study addresses the issues associated with lost and wasted urban spaces.
Lost and wasted spaces refer to areas which have no human activity or proper human
interaction. They are the leftover unstructured landscape at the base of buildings. They
also include abandoned buildings, waterfronts, train yards, vacated military sites, and
industrial complexes. The research outlines the causes of lost and wasted urban spaces
which occur within the eThekwini Municipality and urbanised spaces in general. Through
the use of case studies and precedent studies, the research study investigates the various
techniques, technological advances and approaches that could alleviate wasted spaces in
the city. The Durban Esplanade and Point Waterfront development constitute the main
case study areas; however, to fully understand how and why lost and wasted spaces occur
within the urban environment, various other spaces which make up the cityscape were
also investigated. For example, the city transport infrastructure and green spaces do not
form part of the case studies, but have been included as part of the research into lost and
wasted spaces.
The research study seeks to take the issue of lost and wasted urban spaces a step further
by combining it with issues related to sustainability. Through the use of the case studies,
various possible solutions and alternatives to the alleviation of lost and wasted urban
spaces are outlined and investigated. Examples of how lost and wasted urban spaces
could be transformed from problem areas to spaces of opportunity are also explored. This
was achieved by making use of computer-aided design and graphic illustrations to indicate
the possible solutions that could form part of a holistic approach to the issues surrounding
lost and wasted spaces in the built environment. The current planning legislation is
outlined in order to provide a thorough understanding of the interconnection between environmental and sustainability issues which relate directly to the cause of lost and
wasted spaces. Furthermore, the research study highlights the involvement of various built
environment disciplines, including planners, architects and urban designers and

The coastal grasslands of Maputaland, South Africa : effects of fire and grazing on vegetation structure, diversity, and composition.Dalton, Brian Patrick Alexander. 21 May 2014 (has links)
A series of trials and investigations were implemented to address concerns
surrounding the dynamics of the fire-climax wooded/edaphic grasslands within the
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The research
problem surrounded inadequate historical evaluations of changes in vegetation structure,
grasslands progressing to a woody dominated composition, and increases in Helichrysum
kraussii (Curry bush).
These were addressed as follows: Firstly, the recovery of vegetation in response to
different periods of fire exclusion in different communities along a topographical
gradient of a coastal dune area, was assessed over a two year period. Secondly, the
regeneration after wildfire of the persistent, stress tolerant shrub H. kraussii, was studied
on different catenal positions with differing fire exclusion periods and with and without
defoliation of surrounding plant biomass in the coastal edaphic grasslands north of
Manzengwenya, South Africa. Thirdly, aerial photography from 1937, 1975, and 2000
was georectified, digitised and analysed using a Geographic Information System to
examine broad vegetation changes in response to different management regimes for a site
on the Eastern Shores of Lake St Lucia and a site within the Tewate Wilderness Area.
In the absence of fire, the coastal edaphic grasslands progressed to a closed canopied
scrub forest within six years. An increase in fire exclusion period resulted in a decrease in
species abundance, an increase in woody height, and a decrease in plant density. Richness
increased initially but declined marginally with increased fire exclusion period. Higher
lying east and west facing sites had a better veld condition index compared with bottom
sites and had an increased response (vigour) to defoliation but were far more likely to
succeed through to woody scrub forest. Woody plant biomass vigour was greater for west
facing sites.
Ordination of species composition across sites in response to fire exclusion and
catenal position revealed greater similarities within exclusion periods than between.
Bottom sites were more similar with similarity decreasing for east and west facing sites.
Fire exclusion resulted in an initial increase in woody species and a subsequent increase
in herbaceous species.

Growth response of H. kraussii was unaffected by catenal position and fire exclusion
period, whereas defoliation of surrounding grass tended to increase in size (P<0.05).
Density and height for this species however increased with increasing fire exclusion. An
increase in soil moisture negatively affected H. kraussii growth indicating susceptibility
to high water tables. The number of other woody species establishing beneath H. kraussii
may be due to changes in the transmission of light through the canopy where an increase
in canopy diameter resulted in an increase of photosynthetically active radiation at the
soil surface.
The effects of fire on landscape change were investigated for the Eastern Shores and
Tewate Wilderness Area, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa using aerial
photography. Changes to historical disturbance regimes largely through active exclusion
of fire resulted in the majority of the higher lying coastal grasslands changing to savanna
scrub or closed canopied forest within 63 years on the Eastern Shores. The degree of
fragmentation of these grasslands was greatly reduced within the Tewate Wilderness
Area where disturbance regimes included greater frequencies of fire. Hygrophilous
grasslands remained largely unaffected by woody encroachment but did not preclude
woody species establishment indicating possible susceptibility during long drier periods.
Frequent fires result in the maintained distribution of the higher grasslands. This
vegetation type is a system which becomes resilient in response to fire, whereas in the
absence of fire readily progresses to Dune Forest. The coastal grasslands above the high
water table are therefore highly unstable and transformed easily in the absence of regular
disturbance. It would appear that a threshold of approximately six years exists, after
which substantial management intervention may be required to reverse the succession
back to grassland.
The growth of H. kraussii was unaffected by fire and remained persistent irrespective
of fire exclusion period. An ability to attain size (height and canopy diameter) was
limited with increased soil moisture but density was reduced through regular burning.
Frequent fires are necessary to reduce density of H. kraussii and reduce the competitive

An exploration of the informal learning experiences of home-based caregivers in a non-governmental organisation in KwaZulu-Natal.Kheswa, Siyanda Edison. 30 May 2014 (has links)
Social science research on HIV and AIDS has tended to focus on the statistics regarding the spread of the pandemic and the prevention awareness campaigns. However, there has not been much research on the impact that the pandemic has on families and communities at large. Furthermore, although there are international studies very little research has been conducted on caregivers’ education and training locally. Therefore, the current study was done to bridge the gap between literature and practice by conveying findings that are based on a local South African context.
The study was conducted in Mpophomeni Township, in Kwazulu-Natal. The research participants consisted of twelve home-based caregivers. The purpose of the study was to explore the informal learning experiences of home-based caregivers from a non-governmental organisation, Siyasiza, in KwaZulu-Natal. The study tried to establish what informed the informal learning experiences of caregivers. The study further investigated how the informal learning experiences were made explicit to inform further learning and also tried to find out what caregivers did with shared information to inform their practices. In order to achieve the objectives of the study a basic qualitative research design was deemed most suitable. The situated and experiential learning theories informed the study and were also used as lenses in the thematic analysis of data collected through observation, focus group discussions and in depth interviews.
The findings of the study showed that caregivers’ informal learning experiences were informed by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The loss of own family members influenced caregivers to join the community home-based caregiving initiative to assist families affected by the pandemic. Furthermore, caregivers’ informal learning experiences were driven by career-directed ambition, exemplary learning and second chance learning. The findings further indicated that, for some caregivers, once new information was obtained, it was compared with the related prior knowledge, looked at for similarities or differences, and the value added to the previous experiences was determined. The study also found that caregivers valued and appreciated the
information sharing sessions which improved their future practices and so made their jobs a bit easier.
Lastly, the study found that caregivers played a huge role in supporting the families affected by HIV and AIDS since they mediated between homes and hospital by providing basic health services. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2014.

The effect of application of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur fertilisers to a perennial ryegrass sward on yield, quality and apparent intake by dairy cows.Findlay, Nicola Jean. January 2010 (has links)
Perennial ryegrass is an intensive, temperate pasture grass that responds well to applied fertiliser.
The purpose of this project was to study the effects of fertiliser on the productivity and quality of
perennial ryegrass in KwaZulu-Natal and how this impacts on animal intake. It was hypothesised
that over-application of fertiliser to a perennial ryegrass pasture would negatively affect the quality
of the herbage for grazing by dairy cattle and that intake would be affected. Thus the project
aimed to assess the effects of applied fertiliser on yield, quality and intake of an established
perennial ryegrass pasture.
The trial consisted of a set of six separate experiments. Each experiment focused on the
interaction between two of the major nutrient elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium
(K) and sulphur (S). The experiments (NxP, NxK, NxS, PxK, PxS and KxS) were managed
separately to avoid possible transfer of nutrients during grazing, which would result in the
contamination of treatments. Each factor had three levels (low, medium and high), giving a total of
nine treatments per experiment. Each of the experiments was replicated three times in a
randomised block design.
Increased fertiliser N application rates increased perennial ryegrass yield with a pattern of
diminishing return, where split applications above 40 kg N ha-1 produced smaller increases in yield
when compared with the response at lower applications of N. Applied P, K and S did not affect
yield, suggesting that even the lowest application levels were sufficient to not limit production.
Nitrogen application affected apparent intake, but it is suggested that this is due to the yield effect
rather than a direct effect of N on apparent intake. The application of P, K and S did not affect
apparent intake.
Results from this study showed that the quality of perennial ryegrass herbage, especially in terms
of feed value to dairy cows, can be significantly affected by applied fertiliser. The extent of the
response was affected by sampling date (i.e. time of year) and this must be taken into account
when planning a fertiliser management strategy. This is particularly so with respect to N fertiliser
recommendations.
Crude protein (CP) content of herbage increased with increasing levels of applied N and the
extent of the response was influenced by season. P, K and S did not affect CP concentration in
herbage, except in the PxK experiment where increased levels of K lowered herbage CP. Applied
N considerably increased the concentration of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) in perennial ryegrass
herbage. P and S did not affect NPN levels, whereas applied K decreased NPN content in the

NxK and PxK experiments. Non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content of herbage was decreased
by applied N but was unaffected by applications of P, K and S. Neither neutral detergent fibre
(NDF) nor acid detergent fibre (ADF) was affected by applied fertiliser. In this study herbage P
declined and herbage Ca increased with increasing levels of applied N. The addition of fertiliser K
resulted in lower herbage Ca values. There was no herbage S response to applied fertiliser in this
study.
Classification and regression tree (CART) analysis identified the primary determinant of apparent
intake in experiments containing N as a factor as the amount of material available to be grazed
and that NSC, NPN and ADF are also determinants of apparent intake. Cows do not regulate diet
choice within the short-term time frame of a meal. Thus intake is determined by short-term needs
rather than by meeting long-term nutrient requirements. Fibre creates physical fill within the
rumen, thus restricting intake. High NPN content is associated with high nitrate values. The
reduction in intake of herbage with high nitrate content may be due to reduced palatability or to a
negative feedback system limiting the intake of nitrate and ammonium. Increased NSC content is
associated with increased intake, possibly through the effect of sugar on herbage palatability.

Exploring food insecurity and socio-economic factors affecting academic performance : a case study of first year students on probation and at-risk of academic exclusion.Gwacela, Mbalenhle. January 2013 (has links)
Since the democratic transition, South Africa has come a long way in paving a path that enables citizens to take advantage of education. Within universities, certain overlooked socio-economic and food security factors affect academic performance. The prevalence of food insecurity and factors affecting academic performance was investigated in the context of underperforming first year students. A mixed methodology was used where questionnaire, focus group discussions and key informant interviews were used to collect in depth information. The individual dietary diversity score (IDDS) and household food insecurity access scale (HFIAS) were used to assess the severity of food insecurity.
Fifty-three per cent of students came from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds characterised by unemployed parents and a high dependency on government grants. Twenty per cent of students regularly send remittances home, diverted from their scholarships/ bursaries and study loans thus leaving little for students to survive on. HFIAS results showed majority of students were food insecure as 80% experienced anxiety about food availability and accessibility and 54% had periods of complete inaccessibility to food. The majority of students proved to lack skills in grocery listing and financial management skills. Affordability and storage facility challenges led to students consuming nutritionally poor foods which compromised their health status. The IDDS showed 92% of students consumed bread, rice and maize; 70% ate foods with high levels of sugar, 71% ate foods made with oil, fat or butter; 66% ate meat; 58% ate vegetables, 50% ate fruits. This showed students’ diet is lacking in diversity as they resort to rich, energy-dense and cheap foods found at cheap prices. This robbed students of essential nutrients. Students who lived in university-owned residences were at higher risk of food insecurity. A significant proportion of study participants had substandard secondary school education. The shift in the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) created challenges evident in lack of classroom engagement and lack of efficiency in communicating answers in tests and exams. Student accommodation and its proximity to learning facilities also affected performance negatively.
The study therefore recommends, among other things, that university-owned residences reintroduce and/or subsidize dining halls to increase food accessibility, availability, quality, quantity and dietary diversity challenges. Food coupons could be introduced to low socio-economic students to purchase food from supporting grocery stores. Mandatory attendance of first year students to specialized programs organized by faculties and Student Counseling Centre to improve preparedness of students is needed. The UKZN LoLT policy needs to be implemented effectively so that the performance of second and third language speakers is improved. Translated material and academics who can speak the main local language is encouraged. Assessment of the long-term response to rehabilitation of two wetlands in KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaCowden, Craig January 2018 (has links)
Assessing the outputs and outcomes of wetland rehabilitation activities is recognised by the 'Working for Wetlands' programme in South Africa as important, but to date has been limited. An assessment of the ecological outcomes and the structural outputs of the Working for Wetlands rehabilitation implemented in the Killarney and Kruisfontein wetlands, KwaZulu-Natal, in 2005 was undertaken. The assessment of outcomes included an evaluation of the changes in terms of ecological integrity and the supply of ecosystem services, using WET-Health and WET- EcoServices assessment techniques respectively, and vegetation composition. Improvements in hydrological and geomorphic integrity were recorded in both wetlands, resulting in improved ecosystem services delivery. However, investigation of vegetation composition using the Wetland Index Value and Floristic Quality Assessment Index showed that, seven years after rehabilitation, KiNamey's vegetation composition had improved, but Kruisfontein's vegetation was still largely dominated by pioneer species and appeared to be stable, but in a severely transformed state. The response of these wetlands has shown that sites for rehabilitation should be screened before work begins, and wetlands requiring intensive management of vegetation recovery should be assessed in terms of the objectives and the anticipated benefits of the project. The assessment of the outputs included an evaluation of structural integrity, survival and cost- effectiveness. Limited issues, mostly relating to deviations from the designs during construction, were identified with regards to the structural outputs at each of the wetlands. However, the spreader canals at both Killarney and Kruisfontein wetlands were not functioning as intended and concentrated flows from the spreader canals were evident in both wetlands. The use of spreader canals should therefore be carefully planned and implemented for future wetland rehabilitation projects. Consideration of ZAR per hectare equivalent re-instated/secured provided a useful initial means of determining the cost-effectiveness of the wetland rehabilitation. However, additional factors need to be considered, such as, the nature of the rehabilitation activities, the type and size of the problem being addressed, rehabilitation of priority wetlands, limitations imposed by funders, and risks that need to be addressed by the rehabilitation strategy. Furthermore, the evaluation of the Killarney and Kruisfontein wetlands highlighted the need to revise the Water Research Commission's Wetland Management Series, especially those documents or guidelines relating to rehabilitation planning (WET-RehabPlan), interventions (WET-RehabMethods), and monitoring and evaluation (WET-RehabEvaluate).

The perceptions and experiences of students regarding weapons in schools in Umgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-NatalMhlongo, Thabani January 2017 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Master's in Public Management, Durban University of Technology, 2017. / The purpose of the study explores the perception and experiences of students regarding weapons in schools, in a bid to create a peaceful and conducive learning environment. This study concentrated on four high schools in Umgungundlovu District. Students, educators and principals were asked to participate in this study on a voluntary basis.
The study recognises that existing data related to weapons in South African schools is largely anecdotal. The significance of the study is that it collected data related to the weapons in schools and used data to inform recommendations on ways in which we can make schools safer places to the young people and staff. This was a mixed methods survey; however, the bulk of the findings were drawn from the quantitative data, which was conducted through surveys. The qualitative data was collected in interviews and in focus group discussions.
The data revealed that a high proportion of students have seen weapons in school, which might be an indication that weapons find easy access onto school premises. The results revealed the types of weapons brought to schools. Knives were the weapons most seen at school followed by guns, while some other weapons mentioned were pepper sprays, screwdrivers, pangas and bats The study showed that in other schools, drugs, alcohol, substance abuse were reported in the sample. Among the contributing factors raised by the respondents on the reasons for the presence of weapons onto schools were the issue of drugs, alcohol, bullying, fights among students, and being involved on gang activities. Some policy recommendations regarding school security measures were proposed on the basis of the findings which were drawn from this study.
As part of the study, it is recommended that the Department of Education ensure that all South African schools implement well-documented discipline policies, a code of conduct and school rules for their school which must clearly indicate seriousness of carrying a weapon in school as well as the consequences of misbehaviour. The policy must have steps to be followed by the principals and or educators where there are elements of misconduct against the students and sanctions to be issued if the student is found guilty. Other recommendations were made in line with the findings based on the results. Limitations of the study were further pointed out. / M
