SkinnySensor: Enabling Battery-Less Wearable Sensors Via Intrabody Power Transfer

Tremendousadvancement inultra-low powerelectronics and radiocommunica tionshas significantly contributed towards the fabrication of miniaturized biomedical sensors capable of capturing physiological data and transmitting them wirelessly. However, most of the wearable sensors require a battery for their operation. The battery serves as one of the critical bottlenecks to the development of novel wearable applications, as the limitations offered by batteries are affecting the development of new form-factors and longevity of wearable devices. In this work, we introduce a novel concept, namely Intra-Body Power Transfer (IBPT), to alleviate the limitations and problems associated with batteries, and enable wireless, batteryless wearable devices. The innovation of IBPT is to utilize the human body as the medium to transfer power to passive wearable devices, as opposed to employingon-boardbatteries for each individual device. The proposed platform eliminates the on-board rigid battery for ultra-low power and ultra-miniaturized sensors such that their form-factor can be flexible, ergonomically designed to be placed on small body parts. The platform also eliminates the need for battery maintenance (e.g., recharging or replacement) for multiple wearable devices other than the central power source. The performance of the developed system is tested and evaluated in comparison to traditional Radio Frequency based solutions that can be harmful to human interaction. The system developed is capable of harvesting on average 217µW at 0.43V and provides an average sleep/high impedance mode voltage of 4.5V.

A Novel Preservation-cum-Unhairing Process for Sustainable Leather Manufacturing: An Unconventional Approach in Leather Making

Content: Preservation (or) curing is an important unit process for transportation and storage of raw hides/skins without any deterioration. Popular preservation process is mostly achieved by reducing the moisture content of hides/skins using common salt (NaCl). Usage of salt in preservation process leads to generation of large amount of contaminated salt, total dissolved solids (TDS) and consume huge amount of water for subsequent rehydration step. On the other hand, lime-sodium sulphide based reductive process is commonly employed for the removal of hair from hides/skins. This process leads to generation of lime sludge and possible evolution of toxic hydrogen sulphide gas thereby making the working atmosphere more unpleasant. Several alternative techniques for preservation as well as unhairing process have been developed individually to replace salt and sulfide, respectively. However, a single compound performing dual functions such as preservation and unhairing action in neutral pH conditions has not explored so far. In the present work, a novel formulation has been developed, which possess the both preservation and unhairing potential, and applied on the hides/skins for storage up to 6 months at ambient conditions without dehydration. Low level of sulphide was used during alkaline fiber opening for complete removal of hair. The strength and organoleptic properties are on par with salted skins/hides. The developed process completely eliminates the use of salt and 75% sulphide and also reduces the time and water required for soaking process. The developed system reduces 85% of pollution load discharged from soaking and unhairing processes. Take-Away: One pot system for salt free preservation and low sulfide dehairing for sustainable leather manufacture.

A Deep-Learning Approach for Marker-less Stride Parameters Analysis with Two Cameras

Human gait analysis is an essential indicator for physical and neuroglial health of an individual. Recent developments in deep-learning approaches to computer vision make possible new techniques for body segment and joint detection from photos and video frames. In this thesis, we propose a deep learning approach for non-invasive video-based gait analysis using two RGB cameras that would be suitable for routine gait monitoring in senior care and rehabilitation centers. Due to modularity and the low cost of implementation, it is considered an affordable solution for such centers. Furthermore, since the solution does not require any markers or sensors to be worn, it is a pervasive and easy method for daily usage. Our proposed deep-learning approach starts by calibrating both the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the cameras. Next, video streams captured from two RGB cameras are used as input, and OpenPose and HyperPose deep-learning frameworks are used to localize the main body key points, including the joints and skeleton based on Body 25 and COCO models, respectively. The 2D parameter outputs from the frameworks are triangulated into 3D vector spaces for further analysis. In order to reduce the noises in our data, we applied median and dual pass butter worth filters to the data. Finally gait parameters has been extracted measured and compared to the manually evaluated ground truth data which has been capture via manual measurement of a domain expert. The approach was evaluated in a laboratory setting similar to an institutional hallway in five types of trials: walking back and forth in a straight line while turning out of frame, walking back and forth in a straight line while turning in frame, circular walking, walking with a cane and a walker. The method brings promising results compared to more expensive and restrictive approaches that use up to 16 cameras and require markers or sensors.

The thesis sums up the theoretical outcomes of work and the analysis of present state including requirements for the above stated application. Analysis of internal and external environment of the company is performed with the use of Porter, SWOT, SLEPT and 7S. In addition to that, the analysis of competitive products, all included in the draft, is also peformed. The draft design of software application and the description of implementation to the company environment are created in the last part of the thesis.

The potential of Wonderboom Nature Reserve as an archaeotourism destination

Archaeotourism (also called archaeological tourism) is one of the oldest tourism niches people have visited archaeological sites for centuries. A question that arises is whether less well-known archaeological sites have potential as archaeotourism destinations. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to determine whether Wonderboom Nature Reserve in South Africa has potential as an archaeotourism destination. To determine the potential of the Reserve as such a destination, the attractions of seven archaeotourism sites are discussed four World Heritage Sites and three less well-known archaeological sites based on a literature study. These sites are popular because they offer tourists interesting events and edutainment. Some contribute to nationhood and identity, and have aesthetic value and/or religious meaning. Some have personal significance, and offer mystery, nostalgia or adventure. In some cases, Google Street View is available. In respect of Wonderboom Nature Reserve, a sample of 35 visitors to the Reserve were interviewed in 2015 to gauge their perceptions of the site, using semi-structured interviews. Based on the findings of the literature study and the results of the interviews, the study concludes that Wonderboom Nature Reserve does have potential to be an archaeotourism destination. This conclusion is based on the reasons for which people visit World Heritage and less well-known archaeological sites. For Wonderboom Nature Reserve, it is clear that people visit the site for the Day of the Vow event, and for the four main attractions (Fort Wonderboompoort, the Wonderboom tree, the waterfall, and caves). Some come for nostalgic reasons, others for the various activities the Reserve offers, such as hiking. It is also a sacred site for the Southern Ndebele. Some visitors claimed that they wanted to search for the fabled Kruger millions on the site. The Reserve's rich historical and archaeological resources are also an attraction. However, for Wonderboom Nature Reserve to reach its full potential, this study concludes with a few recommendations, namely better maintenance and proper promotion of the site. Route markings need to be improved. From Slow and Heavy to Agile and Lean : An empirically based theory of how managers ease the transition from traditional to lean-agile approaches to product development

Background Lean and agile approaches to product development impose a paradigm shift in the way organizations are structured, lead, affect the core culture of the firms that use them. As more and more organizations attempt the move from traditional to lean-agile ways of working a large number of challenges and success factors from these transitions are reported in the scientific literature. Many of these challenges can be mitigated, and the success factors boosted, by the traditional line-manager. Objectives The objective of this study is to provide an empirically grounded theory of what managers can and should do in order to ease the transition to lean-agile ways of developing products and services. Methods This study uses constructivist grounded theory in order to obtain an empirically based theory for how managers ease the transition. This is achieved by combining the results from an online survey, a series of interviews, and field observations. The collected data is then analyzed, categorized and continuously tested against new data, resulting in an emergent theory that can be put into the context of the available scientific literature. Results This thesis presents the results from a yearlong study of a Swedish organization in the middle of transitioning from a traditional plan-driven to a scaled lean-agile approach to product development. The resulting theory states that managers can greatly ease the transition by being the manager teachers for their organizations and committedly leading the way in adopting the lean-agile values, principles and methods, in a value-based manner – making sure the new ways are adapted to fit the context of the company and its goals as an organization. Conclusions The conclusion of the study is that not only are managers needed in organizations adopting lean-agile values, principles and methods, they are central to a successful adoption. However, when not being knowledgeable of lean-agile, not staying committed, and not engaging with the teams and practitioners the managers may on the contrary end up costing the company the opportunities offered by the new approach to product development. The resulting theory is grounded both in empirical data and the scientific literature.

Este espacio virtual es decir, Facebook permitio la union de diversos usuaios a partir de un mismo tema y un mismo objetivo en el que se dio a conocer el movimiento social en las redes. Por lo tanto, se concluye esta union en las redes de los usuarios con la marcha que vizibilizaba la violencia de genero. / The realization of this research focuses on the factors that involved the creation of the collective of social protest against violence against women called “Not one less” in Peru, in 2016. The realization of this successful mobilization in the country had the influence of social networks. This virtual space, that is, Facebook allowed the union of various users based on the same theme and the same objective in which the social movement was made known on the networks. Syftet med denna studie är att identifiera och beskriva vilka möjligheter och utmaningar som organisationer, som arbetar med IT-styrning utifrån agila ramverk i stor skala, upplever. En tematisk innehållsanalys har genomförts av vetenskapliga artiklar för åren 2017 till 2020, och från artiklarna har koder genererats som grupperats i olika teman mot bakgrund av studiens frågeställning. Studien har genererat fyra olika teman för de utmaningar och möjligheter som organisationer, som arbetar med IT-styrning utifrån agila ramverk i stor skala, upplever: införandeaspekter och anpassning till organisationen  leda och motivera medarbetare och team  kvalitet och kontinuerlig förbättring  utvecklingsaspekter  En slutsats som kan dras av detta är att det finns mest utmaningar för organisationerna gällande aspekterna som rör införandet och anpassningen till organisationen. Den andra slutsatsen som kan dras är att det finns många aspekter som beskrivits i denna studie som organisationer upplever som möjligheter vid införande och användande av agila ramverk i stor skala, speciellt kopplat till temat att leda och motivera medarbetare och team. Slutligen finns även några aspekter som organisationer upplever som utmaningar vid införande och användande av agila ramverk i stor skala. I absolut störst omfattning framkommer detta i tema ett som rör införandeaspekter och anpassning till organisationen.

Exploring and extending eigensolvers for Toeplitz(-like) matrices : A study of numerical eigenvalue and eigenvector computations combined with matrix-less methods

We implement an eigenvalue solving algorithm proposed by Ng and Trench, specialized for Toeplitz(-like) matrices, utilizing root finding in conjunction with an iteratively calculated version of the characteristic polynomial. The solver also yields corresponding eigenvectors as a free bi-product. We combine the algorithm with matrix-less methods in order to yield eigenvector approximations, and examine its behavior both regarding demands for time and computational power. The algorithm is fully parallelizable, and although solving of all eigenvalues to the bi-Laplacian discretization matrix - which we used as a model matrix - is not superior to standard methods, we see promising results when using it as an eigenvector solver, using eigenvector approximations from standard solvers or a matrix-less method. We also note that an advantage of the algorithm we examine is that it can calculate singular, specific eigenvalues (and the corresponding eigenvectors), anywhere in the spectrum, whilst standard solvers often have to calculate all eigenvalues, which could be a useful feature. We conclude that - while the algorithm shows promising results - more experiments are needed, and propose a number of topics which could be studied further, e.g. different matrices (Toeplitz-like, full), and looking at even larger matrices.
