Appealing to the Audience: How Local TV News Content Producers Learn about the Viewers

Timmins, Lydia Reeves January 2010 (has links)
Local television news is caught between two major forces that determine its future: doing its journalistic duty to society and maximizing profits by providing content that audience members want to see. Various communication models examine the relationships between content providers, audience, and news makers by looking at organizations, media routines, external social and business pressures and ideologies that affect both media and the public they seek to serve. The dissertation argues that the key to satisfying the dictates of both forces lies with the audience and the ways in which local news content producers react to the audience's influence. The research in this dissertation examines a microcosm of the numerous relationships that impact TV news--the one between the content producers and members of the audience. The research uses behavioral theories as tools to examine how content producers and audience members relate to each other individually and how the institution of journalism is broadly affected by that relationship. It examines the normative model of journalism and how the audience and content producers fit into it. The study investigates the current state of audience research, both from an academic and a professional standpoint. This study utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods including ethnographical observation of a newsroom as well as one on one interviews and Web-based surveys to closely examine the way in which behavioral theories apply to local television news content producers. Results indicate the influence audience members exert over content producers is deeper and broader than previous research suggests. The results also show the content producers are aware the influence exists but do not recognize the pervasiveness of the influence. The conclusions offer a better understanding of the symbiotic relationship between audience and the media. / Mass Media and Communication

The general objective is to know how the subject citizenship was approached in the content of the local telejornalismo in the period of 2010 to 2017. To reach the expected results, this study uses as an object of analysis the Jornal Anhanguera 1a edition, television news program shown at lunchtime by TV Anhanguera, an affiliate of Rede Globo de Televisão in Goiás. This decision is due to the fact that the news in question underwent an intense process of changes in 2010 and since then, it has privileged issues related to citizenship in its content. The analysis is guided by the theoretical framework, which is divided into four chapters. The first begins the articulation of the central themes, emphasizing the concepts of communication (SODRÉ, 2001, 2008, 2014; MARCONDES FILHO, 2008; BRAGA, 2001) and citizenship (PINSKY e PISNSKY, 2005; CARVALHO, 2014; SANTOS, 1994; BENEVIDES, 1994; GENTILLI, 2005; SOUZA, 2012), and presenting the Brazilian scenario. The second discusses journalism, its different facets and its process of structural changes (KOVACH e ROSENSTIEL, 2004; CHARRON e DE BONVILLE, 2016; GROTH, 2011; TRAQUINA, 2005; MARCONDES FILHO, 2002, GENRO FILHO, 1987). While the third deals with television journalism and local television journalism in its specificity (STAM, 1985; REZENDE, 2000; VIZEU, 2005; PORCELLO, 2006; MORAES, 2012; AGUIAR, 2016), including the recent transformations that both have experienced (BECKER, 2016; SOUZA FILHO, 2015). Finally, the last theoretical chapter deals strictly with the relationship between journalism and citizenship, highlighting the advantages of journalism as an ally in the construction of citizenship (ABREU, 2009; GENTILLI, 2005; GRADIM,2015). The analysis is conducted mainly from the Content Analysis proposed by Bardin (2010) and is divided into three moments: systematic observation of eight complete editions of the journal in question, as well as 38 specific journalistic articles on citizenship and the "Meus Direitos" since its inception. The research showed, among other points, that the approach to issues related to citizenship is a television news strategy to strengthen ties with a new target audience and that this term in itself, citizenship, is not used by Jornal Anhanguera 1a edição, but serves as a starting point for a significant part of the journalistic agenda today. The distinction of citizen profiles in the analyzed content was also evident, just as it was found that new Information and Communication Technologies have played equally strategic roles from the beginning of the process of reformulating the broadcaster in 2010 until the end of 2017.

Lokal radio och TV : en analys av publikstruktur och deltagande / Local radio and TV : an analysis of audience structure and participation

Lindblad, Anders January 1983 (has links)
The background to the thesis is the decentralization trend which has led to the development of various forms of local radio and television in a number of countries, including Sweden. Common to all official statements regarding the emergence of local media is the theme that local media has a potential for strengthening democracy. The aim is formulated as: to what extent can investigations into audience and participation in Swedish local media be considered indicators of whether these media contribute to the generally-accepted democratic aims of society? Special attention is also given to a study of the research field of "local mass communication" i this has been achieved with the help of a bibliographical analysis of the documents listed in the NORDICOM-bibliography for the years 1975-1980. The audience and participation analysis is based upon: (a) the author's own studies from the cable-tv experiment in Kiruna 1974/75; (b) secondary analyses of studies of audience and participation in Swedish local and neighbourhood radio 1979/80; and (c) the author's own data on local radio from a study in Västerbotten in 1978. The analyses in the thesis are based on two ideal models for the democracy-media relationship - the ideal-democratic model and the critical model. The results show that there is support for both models, i.e. local broadcasting media seems to both reach low-resource people and generate participation in various forms. On the other hand, from the point of view of the critical model, it seems as if participants represent well-established groups in society. The cable-tv data also indicates that activation effects are larger among the highly-edu-cated members of the audience. Other results demonstrate that the following factors are decisive for audience structure: size of the broadcasting area, occupation, and the listener's distance from the transmitting area. Factors that are critical for participation and contact-tendency are organizational activity and previous attempts to achieve influence in community matters. / digitalisering@umu

Strategy for the Digitalization of the Local Television Program Archives in Saxony

Eckardt, André, Eibl, Maximilian, Rickert, Markus, Steinmetz, Rüdiger 16 October 2017 (has links)
The German Free State of Saxony has a high density of independent local and regional television broadcasters. From the antenna communities at the time of the GDR, private TV broadcasters developed after the reunification. In the period of the social transformations in the 1990s, these local TV stations documented the profound changes of the everyday life of the individual, of the local communities and the historical transformations in society and economy during the early years after the German reunion. These recordings are a substantial part of the cultural heritage of Saxony and of the highest interest for social, cultural and media research. Due to how the original material was produced on consumer videotapes, today the recordings are threatened by decay. In the next few years the recordings will be lost, if not acted quickly. Some state and private institutions are currently developing concepts for the preservation of the audiovisual heritage in Saxony In this paper, we discuss how these media objects should be scientifically investigated, in the sense of media and sociocultural dimensions, questions and categories. Based on our experiences and investigations, we present a technical concept which shows how to digitalize, index, describe and categorize copious amounts of videotapes for the preservation, archiving and public access of this important part of the cultural heritage of Germany.
