Appealing to the Audience: How Local TV News Content Producers Learn about the Viewers

Timmins, Lydia Reeves January 2010 (has links)
Local television news is caught between two major forces that determine its future: doing its journalistic duty to society and maximizing profits by providing content that audience members want to see. Various communication models examine the relationships between content providers, audience, and news makers by looking at organizations, media routines, external social and business pressures and ideologies that affect both media and the public they seek to serve. The dissertation argues that the key to satisfying the dictates of both forces lies with the audience and the ways in which local news content producers react to the audience's influence. The research in this dissertation examines a microcosm of the numerous relationships that impact TV news--the one between the content producers and members of the audience. The research uses behavioral theories as tools to examine how content producers and audience members relate to each other individually and how the institution of journalism is broadly affected by that relationship. It examines the normative model of journalism and how the audience and content producers fit into it. The study investigates the current state of audience research, both from an academic and a professional standpoint. This study utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods including ethnographical observation of a newsroom as well as one on one interviews and Web-based surveys to closely examine the way in which behavioral theories apply to local television news content producers. Results indicate the influence audience members exert over content producers is deeper and broader than previous research suggests. The results also show the content producers are aware the influence exists but do not recognize the pervasiveness of the influence. The conclusions offer a better understanding of the symbiotic relationship between audience and the media. / Mass Media and Communication

Latent Newspaper Functions During the Impact Phase of Hurricane Katrina

Brown, Christina A 10 November 2009 (has links)
Media is used by audiences for more than its simple role as information provider. Audiences have been found to use news providers output in a multitude of ways. It has been found that some audience members have used such output as a way to gain social capital that aids in the generation of feelings of social cohesion with their community. This has been found to be especially true during the impact phase of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane (Perez-Lugo, 2004). Unfortunately what news providers specifically articulate that might have this latent use by audiences has not been studied as much as would be necessary for a concrete understanding of the topic that would aid other news providers in designing output during future disasters. As such, here this paper will explore what the content of the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper articulated during the impact phase of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans that had the potential to serve this latent function for its readers.

Using mass media as channel for healthcare information : A minor field study of audience’s media preferences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Nilsson, Anna January 2014 (has links)
One of the main tasks for journalism is to provide people with the information they need to be able to make independent decisions that can help them improve their lives. In order to know that the media fullfils this task it is important to study how the information is received by the audience. This thesis aims to investigate if, and if so how, a selected group of people in Dar es Salaam use news media to inform themselves on problems regarding healthcare, and how they value the information on these topics.A minor field study was carried out in Dar es Salaam in April 2014. The study was limited to Dar es Salaam, the economic capital of Tanzania, because it holds the majority of the media. Three different residential areas were chosen for the study, these were Mwananyamala, which is a low-income area, Sinza, middle–income and Mikocheni, high–income. A survey questionnaire was distributed in each area, 30 in Mwananyamala, 31 in Sinza and 30 in Mikocheni, and in every area four interviews was preformed.According to the selection group there is plenty of healthcare information in the media that is useful to the audience but it is not seen to be very varied. Most information is about malaria and HIV/AIDS, which are two of the most common diseases in Tanzania, but many call for a broader reporting on health issues. Media is however a useful source of information, according to most of the respondents, and especially radio and television has a big impact since it reaches out to a large part of the population. This is a good thing as long as the information is factual and accurate, but several of the respondents believe that this is not always the case.

Corporate university press as a marketing tool: the editorial aspect

И., Bocharova, A. I. January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the master's thesis is to identify editorial marketing strategies for filling the University corporate media, followed by recommendations. The editorial approach to the study of the problems of the corporate press functioning, and, above all, the creation of high-quality content, determines the novelty of the research. The work is carried out on the example of Russian and Spanish-language publications, which led to the introduction of a new set of texts into scientific usage and allowed to determine effective strategies for the formation of corporate publications in different linguocultures. The following material was used in the study at different stages. To understand the process and trends of modeling communicative strategies and tactics in higher education Russian and foreign mass media, by the method of continuous sampling over 1,500 texts of different genres from the Newspapers «Ural Federal» and «Gaceta UNAM» of 80 numbers for 2016-2018 were analyzed. For determining the profile of a typical student of the Ural Federal University a survey has conducted, the results of which were 438 responses of 100 respondents. More than 1500 structural elements (headline complex, endings) of journalistic materials of the newspapers «Ural Federal» and «Gaceta UNAM» for the analysis of architectonics of mass media also served as a material for research. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and bibliography. The first chapter displays the place of corporate media in the system of branding tools and promotion of the University, theoretical approaches to the study of the media audience, in particular, through the results of the survey reveals the image of the target reader of the University newspaper «Ural Federal». Its main characteristics were divided into four generalizing groups according to the degree of importance for the participants of the sociological survey. The readers of the University media consider the communicative and cognitive needs to be fundamental for a typical student, therefore, the speech impact will be effective and communication successful if the corporate media will take into account certain interests during preparation of the materials. The second chapter represents an analysis of communicative, topical, structural and content strategies of corporate University publications, as well as a general algorithm of the modern editor's work on the materials of University media and individual recommendations for each of the examined newspaper. In the process of the research two dominant communicative strategies “the circle” and “appeal to values” were identified and subdivided on tactics. Both the the corporate newspaper of the Ural Federal University («Ural Federal») and the National Autonomous University of Mexico («Gaceta UNAM») crave for positive self-presentation. The common tactics include “friend-stranger”, “territorial attribute”, “abbreviation”, “cooperation”, which, however, can sometimes have a different presentation depending on the publication. For instance, the “Ural Federal” describes us through a pronoun we, and “Gaceta UNAM” characterizes others. The same applies to implicatures, which in the newspaper "Ural Federal" repel the reader from others, and in the newspaper "Gaceta UNAM" attract to theirs. «Gaceta UNAM» has individual tactics that distinguish it from the Ural Federal newspaper. These include the tactics of forming an active citizenship and the tactics of raising the gender issue. Thus, the University of Mexico seeks to unite the audience with the range of topics covered. The analysis of the headline complex in «Ural Federal» and «Gaceta UNAM» newspapers makes it possible to judge about the presence of four characteristic groups of elements: headings, subheadings (overheads), insertions, headings. UrFU newspaper strive to the combination of informative and emotive components of the heading system and uses quotations, questions, illustrative and evaluative statements as titles. UNAM newspaper avoids the use of expressive headlines, from which it becomes apparent editorial policy, namely the desire to position the media as a business media presenting analytical materials. The endings of the texts maintain a given tone of presentation. UNAM materials always have a summary, final opinion and evaluation. And in «Ural Federal» ending reminder, as well as ending, sending information to other resources, can be encountered frequency. The study also proposed a general algorithm for the work of a modern editor on the university media materials and the individual recommendations for each of the newspapers, which were taken into consideration.
