The social life of things : a case study of the Woodward’s Department Store

Thompson, Lindsay 11 1900 (has links)
The objective of this paper is to illustrate how the city came to have such a love affair with the Woodward's Department Store, and how this love affair has led to the building occupying a position of importance in the city of Vancouver. This thesis critically endeavours to argue that Woodward's has become important through the role of social memory, which is able to make and remake the idea of Woodward's, and through the social life of Woodward's objects. Here I use the term social memory to refer to the collective memory that people share about Woodward's, and also to the 'social' way through which this memory is formed. Not only is people's memory of the Woodward's Department Store social, as they remember the 'social'ness of what it meant to either work or shop there, but the objects associated with the building also have a social life, where their function, ownership and meaning have changed over time. Throughout this argument, I attempt to extract the meaning of the memories and memorabilia submitted to the Woodward's Memories Project, in order to outline the reasons why the building holds importance in the city. The story of how Woodward's came to hold such a place of importance in the city can be revealed from the 'social' aspect of both social memory and the social life of objects. Through Woodward's various functions and roles the meanings become entangled, representing the Woodward's building as an object, a memory and an agent of nostalgia. Because Woodward's was an integral part of Vancouver for generations, the store became rooted in the memory of the people and the city as a whole. This is evidenced not only by their memory of the department store but also by the current revitalization efforts of the Downtown Eastside, to which the redevelopment of Woodward's is key. By outlining the social capital of the Woodward's location as a heritage site, as well as of the Woodward's objects and the memories associated with them, one can finally begin to understand the true importance of the Woodward's Department Store to the City of Vancouver. This holds great importance for Vancouver, especially in this time of revitalization and redevelopment. Not only is the past brought to the forefront of a new project, but by tracing the social life of the building the new meanings and functions that the space served is revealed. This research represents a new part of the city's history which is important to document and share with the public. Aiding in understanding the Woodward's building, both in the past and present, the significance of this project extends beyond the scope of this thesis. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

The Geology of the Rustenburg Fault

Bumby, Adam John January 1997 (has links)
The N.N.W.-S.S.E. striking Rustenburg Fault zone, in the western Transvaal Basin, South Africa, has been mapped, in order to unravel its tectonic history. Thickness differences in the Daspoort Formation of the Pretoria Group on opposite sides of the Fault suggest that the Fault was active during Pretoria Group sedimentation, with normal faulting producing localised second-order basins on the down-thrown side of the Fault. In post-Pretoria Group times, but before the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex at -2050 Ma, the area surrounding the Fault zone underwent two compressive events. The first was directed N.E.S. W., producing S.E.-N.W. trending folds, and the second was directed N.W.-S.E., producing N.E.-S.W. trending folds. The second set of folds refolded the first set to form typical transitional Type 1-Type 2 interference folding, and this compression ultimately caused reactivation of the Rustenburg Fault, so that dextral strike-slip movement displaced the Pretoria Group sediments by up to 10.6 km. The subsequent intrusion of the Bushveld Complex into the adjacent strata intensely recrystallised, and often assimilated, the strata along the Fault zone. The fault rocks within the Fault zone were also recrystallised, destroying any pre-existing tectonic fabric. Locally, the Fault zone has been assimilated by the Bushveld Complex. After the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex, little movement has occurred along the Fault, especially where the Fault passes under areas occupied by the Bushveld Complex. It is thought that the crystallisation of the Bushveld Complex has rheologically strengthened the neighbouring strata, preventing them from being refaulted. This model presented above is at variance with previous assumptions that continuous regional extension during Pretoria Group sedimentation culminated in the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 1997. / gm2015 / Mining Engineering / MSc / Unrestricted

Modulation of Synaptic Plasticity: Endocannabinoids and Novel G-protein Coupled Receptors Expression and Translational Effects in Interneurons

Hurst, Katrina M. 01 July 2017 (has links)
Learning and memory are important processes that occur in the brain. The brain is comprised of neurons that make connections with each other known as synapses. Synaptic plasticity is widely believed to be the physiologic mechanism by which learning and memory occur. Synapses can either be strengthened through a process known as long-term potentiation (LTP) or weakened through long-term depression (LTD). The area of the brain that is most studied for its role in learning and memory is the hippocampus, which has been shown to be involved in memory consolidation. The detection of endocannabinoids and their receptors has opened a whole new field of study in regards to synaptic plasticity. Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) are among the commonly studied endocannabinoid receptors found in the central nervous system. In the brain, these receptors' natural ligands, anandamide and 2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG), are found in abundance. Yet not all forms of observed plasticity are accounted for by just these two receptors, so studies into other G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) continues. One GPCR, GPR55 is found in many regions of the brain, as well as lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI), its specific ligand. Here we have researched the role of GPR55 in modulating synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Using quantitative reverse transcription PCR and immunohistochemistry, we have found GPR55 to be expressed in the hippocampus with highest expression in pyramidal cells, the main excitatory neurons in the hippocampus. Using field and whole cell electrophysiology, we have investigated its effects on synaptic plasticity, discovering that activation of GPR55 by LPI significantly enhances LTP. In memory behavioral assays there are no significant differences between GPR55 KO mice and wild type littermates, indicating that it may not be involved in endogenous memory processes. However, our electrophysiology data makes GPR55 a potential target for treating memory disorders such as dementia. We have also investigated GPR18 and GPR119 for their potential roles in synaptic plasticity. First, we confirmed their expression in the hippocampus and then investigated the effects of their agonists on plasticity. Another receptor, TRPV1 has been studied to alter plasticity. However, the study of how protein translation and RNA transcription involvement in TRPV1 plasticity in mammals has not been investigated. While translation and transcription are known to be important in many forms of LTP, it is unknown whether these processes are important for TRPV1-induced LTD. We are investigating their necessity via whole cell patching and using translation and transcription inhibitors Anisomycin and Actinomycin D, both previously used in slice electrophysiology.

A critical analysis of the implications of commissioner South African Revenue Service v Brummeria Renaissance (Pty) Ltd on the taxation of the benefits of interest-free shareholders' loans

Phasha, Manteng Ruth 09 April 2010 (has links)
The ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal in Commissioner South African Revenue Service v Brummeria Renaissance (Pty) Ltd on 13 September 2007 added to and amended South African case law regarding the critical definition of ‘gross income’ in the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962. The court diverged from the existing precedent – set in Stander v Commissioner for Inland Revenue – that receipts that “could not be converted into cash and could not be transferred to anyone else” are not taxable. In Commissioner South African Revenue Service v Brummeria Renaissance (Pty) Ltd the court ruled that what is key is that the benefit has an ascertainable monetary value. Accordingly, the benefits of interest-free loans can be valued – using the weighted prime overdraft interest rate – and can be taxed. This decision has been the subject of much debate, centring on the aptness of the amended view of ‘gross income’, the quid pro quo principle discussed in the judgement, the valuation method, and the implications of these for taxpayers. The purpose of this study is to present arguments and additional information to this continued debate, looking particularly at the impact of Commissioner South African Revenue Service v Brummeria Renaissance (Pty) Ltd on interest-free shareholders’ loans, without attempting to provide a definitive answer to this debate. This non-empirical study explores the topic through a review of literature, with the sources cited being mainly published public articles, tax text books and conference papers retrieved from the internet.
