Development of solar water heating systemMagnusson, Erik, Schedwin, Johan January 2010 (has links)
This report includes development of an already designed solar water heater. The product shall be constructed in a way that it will suit a manufacturing line in Kampala, Uganda. To find the most suitable design for each area a research was carried out which included study visits, interviews and background reading. It provided the following results: Regarding the attachment of in- and outgoing pipes from the water tank many methods were taken into consideration and it was found that the best and most suitable way for this case is to weld the fittings using a weld robot. Regarding the fitting of the acrylic, a suitable solution is to make a flange when vacuum forming the plastic casing to further support the design. This could also be used to waterproof the case by using a sealing material. A suggestion of using pre-molded PU-foam is also presented. Regarding the ability to open the case for maintenance, two solutions were recommended. Either the use of spire clips or having the clips integrated into the casing. Regarding the calculation of material usage when deep drawing the tank and collector, it is possible to do a reasonably accurate assumption. The complicated design in this product makes the estimation less accurate. It is recommended that test draws are done and often the machine producer has more precise numbers. Regarding the coloring of the collector; chemical coloration is not possible on a galvanized surface. The method used is painting, either with powder coating or with wet paint.

Corporate responses to government and environmental group actions designed to protect the environmentRaizada, Rachana 05 1900 (has links)
The pressure on corporations to manage their operations in an environmentally responsible
manner has increased rapidly in the last decade. These pressures are especially intense for
resource-based companies. In the province of British Columbia, environmental policy, which is
the basis of many forms of intervention by the provincial government, constitutes a significant
constraint on the operations of forest companies. Diverse environmental group campaigns
addressing issues such as preservation of temperate coastal rainforest, forest management
practices, and air and water pollution by pulp and paper mills, have contributed to intensifying
the environmental pressures on companies.
Yet it is apparent that forest companies in B.C. which face similar competitive conditions and
are regulated by the same environmental policies have responded differently. The research
question addressed in this study was "Why do corporate responses to government and
environmental group actions designed to protect the environment differ between corporations?"
The research question was examined through the use of a comparative case study research
strategy. Two B.C.-based companies which showed prima facie evidence of having divergent
responses to environmental pressures were chosen for the study. Data was collected on
government and environmental group actions on environmental issues for the period 1983 to
1997 to determine the substantive nature of the issues faced by corporations and to trace their
evolution over the period covered by the study. Data on corporate responses between 1983 and 1997 was collected through interviews, newspaper reports, and corporate documents.
The data was analyzed through a framework based on four theories of organization. Four models
were specified in terms of their unit of analysis, organizing concepts, dominant inference
patterns, and propositions: the rational choice model; the institutional model; the bureaucratic
model; and the leadership model.
The case studies demonstrated that while some government actions had distinct effects on the
companies, and though one was the target of interest group actions more intensively and
frequently than the other, the general operating and regulatory environment of the companies
was more similar than it was distinct. Analyzing organizational characteristics with the use of
the theoretical framework accounted for much of the difference in response. The rational model
was not generally supported except in limited decision-making situations. The institutional model
explained corporate stance in terms of the content and sources of institutional pressures. The
bureaucratic model explained organizational output by illustrating how structural characteristics
affected issues of goal setting and implementation of responses. The leadership model explained
the extent to which changes in corporate strategy resulted from different types of leadership
behaviour, subject to situational constraints. The four models were then integrated to derive
some theoretical implications for academic research and some managerial implications for
corporate managers.

Two studies of the Australian Wheat Board : a traditional price discrimination model, and the privatisation process and pricing behaviour of a risk averse firmLobb, Alexandra E. January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is motivated by the impacts of contemporary political and economic issues such as microeconomic reform and regulatory control on the Australian wheat industry. Firstly, the suggestion of whether the AWB (International) Ltd commands market power and secondly, that the objectives of the AWB Ltd have changed since semi-privatisation of the Australian Wheat Board under the Wheat Marketing Act, 1989. The AWB (International) Ltd’s ability to price discriminate is a key component to the retention of the single desk regulatory arrangement for the export of Australian wheat. Due to data restrictions the market power of the AWB (International) Ltd has not been determined within this thesis. To complement this traditional approach, a more novel proposal is developed to determine the effect of microeconomic reform on the Australian wheat industry. Conceptualising the change of the AWB Ltd’s objectives as a shift from revenue maximization to profit maximization, this study examines the impact of such a change on the pricing policies of a multi- market price-setting firm. More specifically, this study investigates, for two hypothetical objective functions, a risk averse firm’s price-setting behaviour in an “overseas” and a “domestic” market, given differing costs of supply, uncertain demand functions and differing price elasticities of demand in each market. The aim is to generate empirically testable hypotheses relating to the impact of a change of objectives on pricing behaviour.
