Investigation of the moral reasoning of offending and non-offending adolescents using the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form

Brusten, Catherine Maria January 2002 (has links)
The body of work presented in this thesis results from an in depth investigation of the moral reasoning of male offending and male and female non-offending adolescents in the UK using the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (Gibbs, Basinger & Fuller, 1992). In Chapter I a review of the research relevant to field of study was presented. In Chapter 2 findings from initial investigations into the patterns of moral reasoning of male offending and male and female non-offending adolescents were presented. Key aims of the studies presented in Chapter 2 were to replicate previous findings using the measure amongst offenders and non-offenders, in particular to test claims that offenders were morally immature in relation to non-offending peers, and to investigate gender differences on the measure. In line with predictions, the measure discriminated between offenders and non-offenders, with offenders having significantly lower mean scores than non-offenders. No gender differences were observed in the overall sample. However, some difficulties were found in discriminating between younger male offenders and male non-offenders. Tests of the internal characteristics of the scale were also performed. In Chapter 3, subsequent analyses of data were performed using "categorical" methods. This represented a novel means of tackling the data. A key aim was to test the Gilligan (1982) hypothesis that females and males differ in use of Stage 3 "mutual and prosocial" and Stage 4 "systemic and standard" reasoning. Results of the "categorical" analyses apparently corresponded to the Gilligan hypothesis. Patterns of intra-individual variability in moral stage use were also investigated to test claims regarding structural consistency in moral reasoning. It was found that participants were demonstrating intra-individual variability in their patterns of moral reasoning, this presented a challenge to certain aspects of the moral reasoning model. The final chapter summarised key findings to emerge from the thesis, and discussed these in theoretical context.

Navarrete Talavera, Patricia, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) 29 April 2013 (has links)

Just health care in Nigeria : the foundations for an African ethical framework

Ujewe, Samuel Jonathan January 2016 (has links)
Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa share at least three things: cultural heritage, a high burden of disease and a low financial commitment to health care. This thesis asks questions of justice about health care systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular Nigeria. The questions are about access to the available health resources and services within African health care systems. While the sub-region as a whole cannot boast of good health care, certain population groups are relatively more disadvantaged. This suggests either or both of two problems: a) that access to basic health care is not proportionate to the populations’ needs; and/or b) that the distribution of the available health care resources favour some over others. Attempts to improve population health have focused on empirical, economic or social strategies. These tend to overlook the ethical dynamics surrounding access to and the distribution of health care. In view of this moral challenge, Norman Daniels has proposed the ethical framework of Accountability for Reasonableness, which can provide basic guidelines for just health care reforms in Africa. While his approach has been effective in the United States, the theoretical basis has fundamental value differentials from African ideals of justice. Starting from Daniels’ Just Health – Meeting Health Needs Fairly, this PhD study develops an African ethical framework that could inform reforms in African health care systems. Specifically, it establishes four key attributes of the African moral outlook, and three principles of African justice. It further abstracts an African method of ethical analysis: process equilibrium. Against this background, the thesis develops a harmonised framework of just health care. Daniels’ principles are matched with African principles to create a Just Health Theory, which is adapted to the Sub-Saharan Africa context. The resulting African principles are mapped onto the health care sector and finally blended into the Harmonised Framework of Just Health Care. By combining the insights from Daniels with African values and approaches, it is possible that just health care will be attained in Nigeria and beyond.

Desenvolvimento moral na análise do comportamento: uma revisão bibliográfica / Moral Development in Behavior Analysis: a literature review

Carvalho, Lígia Mosolino de 19 October 2016 (has links)
Sugere-se que a análise aqui realizada seja ampliada para outra base de dados, especialmente livros e capítulos de livros especializados em Análise do Comportamento e/ou acerca do Desenvolvimento Moral / In Psychology, the moral is usually considered as a set of mores, habits, values and rules of a specific society or culture. Several approaches give some attention to the Moral Development field, however only a few studies adopt the Behavior Analysis perspective. This study aimed to do a review of the behavioral analytic production about Moral Development, addressing the most frequently studied questions, in the theoretical field and both experimental and applied, comparing this production with what is being produced in other psychological approaches. Hence, a literature review was conducted on the main journals of the field, as well as on the books Sobre Comportamento e Cognição and Comportamento em Foco. The analysis of the selected data shows that although the \"moral development\" terminology is slightly used by behavior analysts, the research conducted on the field embraces the consideration of sequence and progression on the development of morality, education and parental practices. In this framework, the moral behavior has been treated in the perspective of rule governance, addressing the correspondence between saying and doing and prosocial behaviors. Some similarities and differences are analyzed between these studies and the ones developed by other psychological approaches. In general, it is noted that the Moral Development theme is commonly confused with Infant Psychology, possibly because emphasis is given to the pattern acquisition of moral behavior, which occurs mostly in our society during the early years of life. It is suggested that the analysis conducted in this study should be expanded to other databases, especially books and chapters of books specialized in Behavior Analysis and/or Moral Development
