Ectopic Notch1 Activation Alters Mammary Cell Fate During Puberty and Promotes the Development of Lactating Adenomas during PregnancyKucharczuk, Aaron 14 February 2010 (has links)
The role that each of the Notch receptors play in controlling alveolar development and cell fate determination in the mouse mammary gland has remained unclear. By utilizing a cre-conditional constitutively active intracellular Notch1 knock-in I define, in vivo, that ectopic Notch1 activation is sufficient to inhibit ductal outgrowth, cause the formation of alveolar-like cell accumulations, and promote Elf5+/ER- cell fate, at the expense of ER+ cell fate, in the mammary gland of pubescent mice. Furthermore, ectopic Notch1 in the pregnant mammary gland is sufficient to promote the formation of pregnancy/lactation-dependent lactating adenomas. These lactating adenomas consist of differentiated secretory cells and normally regress during involution but progress into non-regressing tumours after multiple pregnancies. These lactating adenomas exhibit decapitation secretions characteristic of apocrine differentiation. Together these results suggest that Notch1 may function to promote Elf5+/ER- cell fate and may be misregulated in pregnancy-associated masses and apocrine-carcinoma of the breast in humans.

EFFECT OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS ON THE OVARIES OF LACTATING DAIRY COWSBidarimath, Mallikarjun 06 December 2011 (has links)
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of rumen-protected fish oil (RPFO) and rumen-protected marine algae (RPMA) supplements on ovarian function of lactating dairy cows on pasture or in confinement during the estrus and ovulation synchronization period. Thirty-six Holstein cows were assigned to one of the two feeding systems and fed with lipid supplements from 30d before to 100d after calving. The resumption of cyclicity and onset of estrus were not influenced by LS. Mean daily number of the large follicles was similar across the treatments. During the Ovsynch period, RPFO treated cows had larger follicles (?10mm; P<0.05). Ovulation was delayed in RPFO and RPMA group but the number of ovulation was not altered. The number and diameter of CL were greater in the RPMA group. Progesterone concentrations were greater in the RPMA group on pasture (P<0.05). These findings indicate that RPMA supplementation improves the ovarian function.

Strategic Approaches To Develop Optimal Feeding Program of Brown Midrib Corn Silage to Lactating Dairy Cows in the Intermountain WestHolt, Michael Shane 01 May 2013 (has links)
In two lactation studies reported in this dissertation, it was hypothesized that feeding 35% brown midrib corn silage (BMRCS) and 25% alfalfa hay (dry matter basis) would result in increased dry matter intake (DMI) around peak lactation compared with feeding conventional corn silage (CCS), causing longer peak milk production, and that feeding dairy cows in early lactation a 16% crude protein diet with fair quality alfalfa hay (FAH) in BMR-based diets would maintain milk production, reduce urinary N excretion, and improve N efficiency compared to those fed high quality alfalfa hay (HAH) in CCS- or BMR-based diets. A third experiment was conducted to assess in situ degradation kinetics of BMRCS harvested prior to or at maturity. The first lactation study was performed to determine the long-term effects of feeding BMRCS fed with a high dietary concentration of good quality alfalfa hay in a high-forage lactation diet on productive performance of Holstein dairy cows for the first 180 d of lactation. Feeding BMRCS-based diet did not affect milk production through peak lactation compared with a CCS-based diet; however, cows fed the BMRCS-based diet maintained heavier body weight through peak lactation and longer peak milk production, which resulted in increased milk yield post peak lactation, leading to greater overall milk production and milk protein yield. A second lactation experiment was performed to investigate if early lactating dairy cows fed with the FAH in BMRCS-based diets would reduce urinary N excretion and improve N efficiency compared to those fed the HAH in CCS- or BMR-based diets. Feeding BMR and HAH had better N utilization by decreasing concentrations of urea in blood, milk, and urine. In addition, feeding BMR-based diets decreased urinary N-to-fecal N ratio, and it was further reduced by feeding the HAH, which can represent an environmental advantage over traditional sources of forages in lactation dairy diets. A third experiment assessed in situ DM and neutral detergent fiber degradation kinetics for two new pre-matured BMR varieties (pmBMR1 and pmBMR2) that can be double-cropped by harvesting at tassel, compared with a sole crop mature BMR (mBMR) and CCS harvested at maturity in dry and lactating Holstein dairy cows. The potentially degradable NDF fraction was greater for BMR hybrids compared with CCS with the exception of the pmBMR2, which had the lowest potentially degradable NDF fraction in dry cows. Estimates of ruminal degradability of NDF were greatest for pmBMR1 in both dry and lactating cows. Feeding BMRCS exerted nutritive and environmental benefits when fed with typical Intermountain West lactation dairy diets. Further research is needed to understand interactive aspects of nutrient utilization with other dietary ingredients under different physiological conditions to take full potential benefits of BMRCS.

OPTIMIZING MICRONUTRIENT INTAKE OF LACTATING WOMEN IN KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA, THROUGH INCREASED WILD EDIBLE PLANT CONSUMPTION

Micronutrient consumption in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is insufficient to meet the needs of lactating women. Inadequate intake negatively impacts the health of both the mother and infant. Increasing consumption of wild edible plants has been recommended to combat these deficiencies, but information has not yet been provided on which types of wild plants should be eaten or in what quantity. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal mixture of wild edible plants that needs to be consumed to meet the micronutrient needs of lactating women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This was done by creating optimization models using linear programming. Components of these models included identifying gaps between current micronutrient intake and recommended intake levels and the creation of composite nutrient profiles for groups of wild edible plants available in KwaZulu-Natal. One model calculated the optimum amount of wild edible plants that would need to be consumed in addition to the current diet to meet micronutrient recommendations. A second semi-isocaloric model calculated the optimum amount of wild edible plants that would need to be consumed if half the additional calories would replace an equivalent number of calories of the main staple food, maize. A combination of 250g leafy vegetables and 349g fruit, replacing 54g of maize meal, was determined to be the best model. This mixture will meet the micronutrient needs of 50% of lactating women and would add only 192 calories to the diet. The same blend will meet the needs of 75% of women for all nutrients except calcium, zinc, thiamin, and riboflavin. It is hoped that increased use of wild plants will also increase physical activity and make the consumption of high quality animal products more economically feasible. Understanding forces that have brought about current dietary patterns in this population and working in tandem with other nutrition intervention programs will be the best way to successfully implement these goals. More complete information is needed on the nutrient profiles of wild edible plants in South Africa and on how anti-nutrients in these plants effects bioavailability of nutrients and the health of the consumer. Despite these limitations, it is clear that a reasonable increase in wild edible plant consumption can have a tremendous positive impact on micronutrient consumption of lactating women in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

INVESTIGATION OF FLAVOR AND AROMA PREFERENCES OF COMMON PALATANTS IN MARES AND FOALSCrowell, Cierra Nicole 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
While equine palatability research has been well documented, the majority of research has been conducted in mature, non-lactating horses (Betz & Lanter, 1980; Van den berg et al., 2016; Goodwin et al., 2005; Francis et al., 2020). While palatability research primarily aims to detect flavor preferences to mask medications, utilize in treats, etc., other aspects focus on acceptance and behavior (Senturklu & Landblom, 2015; Goodwin et al., 2005; Van den berg et al., 2016; Franics et al., 2020). Although a substantial amount of data is conducted on canine olfaction, data pertaining to equine olfaction is quite limited (Francis et al., 2020; Jenkins et al., 2018; Kokocinska-Kusiak et al., 2021). The objective of this study was to investigate the flavor and aroma preferences of lactating equine mare and foal pairings. Stock-type mare and foal pairings (n = 4), aged 6.5 ± 3.9 weeks, were utilized in paired preference testing using apple, anise, peppermint and control palatants. Testing was split into flavor testing (0730-0830 hours) and aroma testing (1630-1730 hours). Mares and foals were loaded into test stalls and allotted 30 minutes to freely interact with treatments. Data was recorded via live stream cameras and evaluated for categorical and numerical data. Variables of interest included: first treatments investigated, consumed, and finished; maternal effects of treatment locations, time spent consuming each treatment, time spent rest recumbent, percentage of treatments consumed, and total voluntary consumption. Data were analyzed using SAS for academics with significance set at 5%. Flavor analysis revealed no preference of first flavor investigated (P = 0.4918), consumed (P = 0.4018) or finished (P = 0.5424) of mares. Foals were also found to exhibit no flavor preferences for first investigated (P = 0.5996), consumed (P = 0.4278), or finished (P = 0.9914). A location effect was exhibited by mares and found that flavor treatments in location 2 and 3 were more likely to be first consumed (P < 0.0001). Foals were more likely to first finish those flavor treatments in location 1 (P = 0.0003). No period effect was exhibited for flavors first investigated (P =0.7552), consumed (P = 0.5404) or finished (P = 0.7903). A period effect was exhibited for first finished flavor treatments of mares (P = 0.0170). Further analysis found that mares were more likely to finish the peppermint flavor for periods 1 and 2 compared to periods 3 and 4 (P = 0.0518). The mean time spent foals spent consuming flavors was not significant (P = 0.2120) and no period effects were exhibited (P = 0.1713). However, time spent resting decreased significantly from period 1 to 4 (P = 0.0476). Likewise, there was no flavor treatment effect on the mean percentage of treatments consumed (P = 0.8431), nor was there a period effect (P = 0.4125). Aroma analysis also found no preference for first investigated (P = 0.8472), consumed (P = 0.8472), or finished (P = 0.8166) of mares. Similarly, foals exhibited no aroma preferences for first investigated (P = 0.5206), consumed (P = 0.5206), or finished (P = 0.1650). A period effect was exhibited for mares for first aroma treatments investigated (P = 0.0101) and consumed (P = 0.01) across periods. However, further analysis found that there was no difference for treatments across periods. A location effect was also exhibited by mares, with location 1 being selected at a lower frequency than locations 2, 3 and 4 (P = 0.0003). Interestingly, locations 3 and 4 had a higher frequency of being the first aromatic treatments finished (P = 0.0008). Foals were found to first consume (P = 0.0315), and finish (P = 0.0013), those treatments located in location 1. Comparative analysis of relationships between mare and foal selective actions found that pairings made similar flavor selections for first investigated treatments (P = 0.1865) but selected different aromatic treatments (P = 0.0415). Likewise, pairings selected similar flavor treatments (P = 0.1062) but selected different aromatic treatments for first consumption (P = 0.0415). Findings suggest that while flavor and aromatic preferences are not strong for mare and foal pairings. However, comparative analysis of selections between the two groups found selections to be similar for flavor testing and different for aromatic testing.

Varying rumen available carbohydrate and rumen available protein in diets of lactating cattleGarrett, Jennifer L. 06 June 2008 (has links)
Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of varying dietary sources of rumen available carbohydrate (RAC) and rumen available protein (RAP) on milk yield and milk composition, nutrient flow to the duodenum, ruminal and total tract nutrient digestibilities, and ruminal pH, ammonia-N, and VFA concentrations in lactating cows. The first study was a response surface design utilizing nine dietary combinations of RAC and RAP. The response surfaces of all milk variables were saddle-shaped. Because of the saddle-shaped surfaces, an optimum combination of RAP and RAC for milk production variables was not obvious from the limited range of RAC and RAP used in this study. Ridge analysis of the saddle surfaces predicted maximum milk yield when dietary RAC was below 69 % of the DM and RAP below 60% of CP in alfalfa-corn silage based diets. In the second study, four cannulated (ruminal and duodenal) cows were utilized in a 4x4 Latin square design. Four of the nine original diets were selected to provide the largest range of RAC and RAP. Nutrient flow, digestiblities and ruminal parameters were evaluated. Although the in situ incubations indicated that rates of DM, CP, and NDF degradabilities differed among diets, no effects on overall ruminal pH and total VFA concentrations were detected. Additionally, DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and N flows to the duodenum were not affected by dietary treatment. Nonmicrobial N flow was greater for the barley-based diet, yet microbial flow was not different. The differences in rates of availability determined by in situ methods were not large enough to illicit a measurable difference in nutrient digestion and utilization. Additionally, the data implied that none of the diets were limiting in RAC and RAP for vigorous microbial activity. Fat-corrected (3.5%) milk production was greatest (P<.05) when alfalfa-corn silage based diets contained supplements providing intermediate (69 % RAe) carbohydrate availability (corn and barley) and low (60 % RAP) ruminal protein availability (BM and SBM). The increase in fat-corrected milk was consistent with the predicted milk production response in the previous study when RAP exceeded 62% of CP. However, the ruminal parameters, nutrient flow, and nutrient digestibility measurements did not adequately explain the increased milk production when diets contained increased concentrations of BM. / Ph. Tesis por compendio / [EN] Climate change, a resultant effect of greenhouse gas emissions, is a worldwide concern because its continuation is having significant impacts on people, natural resources and economic conditions around the world. The root cause of this recent past and projected climate change is now recognised to be the warming potential of a number of greenhouse gases that, by absorbing terrestrial infrared radiation, raise the temperature of the troposphere and with it, global surface temperatures.
The major greenhouse gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases. While carbon dioxide receives the most attention as a factor which causes global warming, methane also cause significant radiative forcing.
Methane is only second to carbon dioxide in its contribution to global warming and its emissions are caused by both natural and anthropogenic actions. Human activities such as intensive livestock farming are the primary cause of the increased methane concentrations in the atmosphere, being ruminants the animals which create large amounts of methane via fermentation of feeds in the rumen. During this physiological digestive process, hydrogen is released by some microbes during fermentation of forage and is used by methanogenic Archaea (methanogens) to convert carbon dioxide to methane, which is released through eructation, normal respiration and small quantities as flatus.
Rumen fermentation of cattle contributes the most towards the greenhouse effect through methane emission followed by sheep, goats and buffalos, respectively.
Several techniques have been developed to quantify methane emissions from ruminants - indirect calorimetry, sulphur hexafluoride tracer technique and in vitro gas production technique - and some strategies for reduction of methane emissions from the rumen have been described - defaunation treatment, vaccine and dietary composition -.
The initial topics of this research were: design the experiments with goats because there are not many reports about methane emissions in these animals; investigate the influence of dietary composition (carbohydrates) as a strategy for reduction methane emissions from the rumen; and use the indirect calorimetry as method to quantify methane production.
Consequently, three experiments were performed. Murciano-Granadina goats during mid or late lactation were used. Diets were mixed rations that differed in the inclusion of cereal or fibrous by-products. The effect of diet was studied on milk yield, digestibility, rumen parameters, energy partitioning, carbon and nitrogen balance, substrate oxidation and methane productions.
In the first experiment, gas exchange was measured using a face mask which was fixed to the head of the goat by a rubber band; a sample of exhaled gas was stored in a gas collection bag which was connected to an analyzer, and it measured the concentration of O2, CO2 and CH4 from the air. This first experiment replaces corn grain with beet pulp and the amount of methane recovered was 19.6 and 29.7 g/day, respectively.
In the other two experiments, gas exchange was measured by a head box designed for small ruminants where the goat introduced the whole head and a specific software automatically recorded concentrations of O2, CO2 and CH4 from the exhaled air continuously throughout the day. The second experiment involved two diets with high and low level of starch and no differences were found on methane emission (28.5 g/day). The experiment number three replaces ingredient by ingredient like in the experiment number one. Here, barley grain was replaced with orange pulp or soybean hulls and no differences were found, with an average methane production value of 41 g/day. The metabolizable energy intake during the three experiments was 1279 kJ/kg of BW0.75 and day on average, and the efficiency use of metabolizable energy intake for milk production was 0.6. / [ES] El cambio climático es una preocupación de ámbito mundial debido a que su perpetuación en el tiempo está teniendo un impacto significativo sobre las personas, los recursos naturales y las condiciones económicas de todo el mundo. El metano, después del dióxido de carbono, es el gas que más repercusión tiene sobre el calentamiento global y sus emisiones son causadas tanto por acciones naturales como humanas. Actividades antropogénicas tales como la ganadería intensiva son la principal causa de aumento de las concentraciones de metano en la atmósfera, siendo los rumiantes los animales que mayores cantidades de metano generan a través de la fermentación de alimentos que se produce en el rumen.
Las emisiones de metano del ganado vacuno son las que principalmente contribuyen al efecto invernadero seguido de las ovejas, las cabras y los búfalos, respectivamente.
Se han descrito diferentes técnicas para medir las emisiones de metano de los rumiantes - la calorimetría indirecta, la técnica del marcador con hexafluoruro de azufre y la técnica de producción de gas in vitro - y, además, se han mencionado algunas estrategias para reducir las emisiones de metano - la defaunación, las vacunas y la composición de la dieta -.
Los puntos clave de esta Tesis fueron: diseñar los experimentos con cabras, debido a que no hay muchas investigaciones sobre emisiones de metano en estos animales; estudiar la influencia de la composición de la dieta (hidratos de carbono) como una posible estrategia para la reducción de las emisiones de metano del rumen; y utilizar la calorimetría indirecta como método para cuantificar la producción de metano.
Se realizaron tres experimentos. Se utilizaron cabras de la raza Murciano-Granadina en mitad o final de la lactación. Las dietas eran raciones mixtas que diferían en la inclusión de cereal o subproductos fibrosos. El efecto de la dieta se estudió en la producción de leche, la digestibilidad, los parámetros del rumen, la partición de energía, el balance de carbono y nitrógeno, la oxidación de nutrientes y las producciones de metano.
En el primer experimento, el intercambio de gases se midió utilizando una mascarilla que se fijó a la cabeza de la cabra con una goma; se almacenó una muestra de gas exhalado en una bolsa de recogida de gas que estaba conectada a un analizador, y se midió la concentración de O2, CO2 y CH4 del aire. En este primer experimento se reemplazó el grano de maíz con pulpa de remolacha y la cantidad de metano recuperado fue del 19,6 y 29,7 g/día, respectivamente.
En los otros dos experimentos, el intercambio de gases se midió mediante una urna o cajón diseñado para pequeños rumiantes, donde la cabra introducía toda la cabeza y un programa informático grababa automáticamente las concentraciones de O2, CO2 y CH4 del aire exhalado de forma continua a lo largo del día. El segundo experimento consistió en dos dietas con alto y bajo nivel de almidón y no se encontraron diferencias en la emisión de metano (28,5 g/día). En el tercer experimento se sustituyó ingrediente por ingrediente como en el experimento número uno. El grano de cebada se sustituyó por pulpa de naranja o cascarilla de soja y tampoco se encontraron diferencias, con un valor promedio de la producción de metano de 41 g/día. assigned randomly to be treated with the Cosynch-72 protocol (GnRH 12 d after last Presynch
PGF[subscript]2[alpha] injection, PGF[subscript]2[alpha] 7 d after GnRH, and timed AI + GnRH injection 72 h later) and served as
controls (n = 159), or to be treated with the Cosynch-72 protocol and receive a progesterone
insert (Ovsynch + CIDR; n = 175) for 7 d between GnRH and PGF[subscript]2[alpha]. Blood was collected at d
−22 and −10 (relative to TAI at d 0) to determine cycling status based on progesterone
concentrations and again at d 11 post AI to determine luteal competency. Treated cows were
assigned body condition scores (BCS) on d −22 and −10. Pregnancy status was confirmed by
palpation of the uterus per rectum and its contents on d 38 post-timed AI and verified again 4 wk
later. Treatment with the progesterone insert increased timed AI pregnancies per AI in Cosynch-
72 + CIDR-treated cows when compared with controls (38 vs. 24%), but did not differ from
early AI cows (38%). Pregnancy loss was numerically less in progesterone-treated cows than in
controls (4.4 vs. 11.8%). Our study shows that increased pregnancies per AI can be achieved by
the use of a progesterone insert in a reduced population of cows not yet inseminated, but treated
with a progesterone insert.

The nutritive value of faba bean silage for lactating dairy cowsLouw, Antony William 03 1900 (has links)

(Avena sativa) were determined according to fresh material harvested at weekly intervals. From 75 to 166 days
after planting whole plants of faba beans and oats were harvested at a height of ca. 10 cm above the ground on
five randomly selected areas of 0.25 m² each. The freshly harvested material was weighed “as is” and ovendried
to determine the DM content of each sample. The fresh and DM forage production per hectare was then
calculated. The crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF),
nitrogen free extract (NFE), fat (EE), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents were determined according to
standard laboratory techniques. The change in chemical composition of fresh whole crop material was
regressed on days after planting using simple linear regressions. The fresh and DM production of whole crop
faba beans and oats increased with advancing growth stage. During the 2002 production year fresh yield
production of both whole crop faba beans and oats peaked at 131 days (44.7±6.9 and 28.4±7.1 ton/ha
respectively). DM yield peaked at 159 and 152 days for whole crop faba beans and oats being 9.4±1.3 and
8.8±0.7 tons DM/ha respectively. The chemical composition of both forage crops decreased with advancing
growth stage. The CP content of whole crop faba beans decreased (P<0.05) from 25.3% at 82 days after
planting to 18.4 % at 166 days after planting in the 2002 production year, while during the 2003 production year
the CP content of whole crop faba beans decreased (P<0.05) from 28.2 to 19.5 % from 75 to 159 days after
planting. During 2002 the CF % of faba beans increased from 20.2 to 22.6%, while during 2003 CF % similarly
increased from 21.8 to 26.5%. The CF % for oats during 2003 increased from 25.6 to 36.9%. During the same
time the EE, Ca and P contents also decreased (P<0.05), while the NDF, CF and ADF contents increased (P<0.05).
Two milk production studies were conducted to compare the feed intake, milk yield and milk composition of
Holstein cows receiving either whole plant faba bean silage or oats as a hay or silage. Faba bean (Vicia faba)
silage (FBS) was compared to that of cows receiving either oat (Avena sativa) hay (OH) or oat silage (OS) and
in a 50:50 combination with FBS. Faba beans (cv. Ascot) and oats (cv. Sederberg) were planted on a
Glenrosa soil. Whole crop faba beans were ensiled 145 days after planting in an above ground concrete
bunker using a commercial bacterial inoculant after being wilted for one day.
In the first experiment, total mixed rations (TMR) containing FBS, OH or a 50:50 mixture of FBS and OH as
forage, together with a concentrate, were fed to three groups of seven lactating Holstein cows each. The
experiment was conducted according to a randomized block design. Cows were on average 112±44 days post
calving producing 24.0±6.2 kg milk/day. Milk production parameters of cows receiving diets containing different forages were compared by analysis of variance. The DM intake and milk yield of cows receiving
TMR’s containing FBS, OH or a mixture of 50:50 FBS and OH as forages did not differ (P>0.05), milk yields
being 18.9±1.9, 20.6±1.3 and 20.5±1.4 kg/cow/day respectively. With the exception of MUN, milk composition
parameters did not differ among treatments (P>0.10). Cows fed OH as roughage source had a higher
(P=0.06) MUN level in the milk. Results from this study indicate that FBS could effectively replace OH in
lactating dairy cow diets.

mixture of 50:50 FBS and OS as forages did not differ (P>0.10), although body weight changes differed
significantly (P<0.10), i.e. 4.0±3.2, 8.8±3.2 and -6.0±3.2 kg respectively. The milk yield of cows receiving

may in the foreseeable future play an increasingly larger role in the feeding of dairy cattle in the Winter Rainfall
Region of South Africa. As in the case of lupin silage, though with much higher protein content, farmers will be
able to produce their own quality and high protein roughage. The nutritive properties of faba bean silage holds
great promise as a forage in lactating dairy cows. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die droëmateriaal (DM) produksie en chemiese samestelling van heelplant fababone (Vicia faba) en hawer
(Avena sativa) is bepaal deur vars plantmateriaal op ‘n weeklikse basis te sny. Plantmonsters van beide
fababoon en hawerplante is gesny vanaf 75 tot 166 dae na plant op ‘n hoogte van ca. 10 cm bo die grond.
Plantmonsters is weekliks gesny op vyf ewekansige persele met ‘n oppervlak van 0.25 m² elk. Die vars gesnyde
plantmateriaal is geweeg en daarna ge-oonddroog om die DM inhoud van elke monster te bepaal. Die
varsmateriaal en DM opbrengs per hektaar is bereken. Die ruproteïen (RP), ruvesel (RV), neutraal bestande
vesel (NBV), suur bestande vesel (SBV), stikstof vrye ekstrak (NVE), eterekstrak (EE), kalsium (Ca) en fosfor (P)

USE OF MTB-100TM, PROVIDED THROUGH A MINERAL MIX, TO REDUCE TOXICITY WHEN LACTATING BEEF COWS GRAZE ENDOPHYTE-INFECTED TALL FESCUEHoar, Melanie E 01 January 2013 (has links)
Two experiments were conducted at the University of Kentucky, Eden Shale Farm, Owenton, KY to evaluate the use of MTB-100TM (Alltech, Inc., Nicholasville, KY) to alleviate the symptoms of fescue toxicity when lactating Angus x Beefmaster cows and their calves grazed endophyte-infected KY-31 tall fescue. Experiment 1 provided a carbohydrate based toxin adsorbent, MTB-100TM, ad libitum in a commercial mineral supplement to project a daily consumption rate of 0, 20 or 40 g of MTB-100TM per cow. Cows were weighed, assigned a body condition score (BCS) and hair coat score (HC), rectal temperatures were recorded and fecal grab samples were taken for ergovaline (EV) and lysergic acid (LA) analysis every 35 days for three grazing seasons (May to September). Calves were also weighed and assigned a HC score. Although MTB-100TM did not improve cow or calf performance, cows older than 4 years and those with greater Beefmaster breeding exhibited a higher tolerance to fescue toxicity than 2 and 3-yr-olds and cows with greater Angus breeding.
Experiment 2 was conducted to evaluate the response of lactating beef cows and their calves to strategic supplementation with MTB-100TM. MTB-100TM was mixed with a complete mineral so daily intake was projected to be 0 or 20 g/cow. The experimental period extended from May 5 to October 2 and was divided into 3 strategic periods: P1 = May 5 to July 5; P2 = July 5 to August 31; P3 = August 31 to October 2. Treatments were either 0 or 20 g•cow-1•d-1 MTB-100TM within a period (Treatment 1 = 0, 0, 0; Treatment 2 = 20, 0, 20; Treatment 3 = 0, 20, 0; Treatment 4 = 20, 20, 0; and Treatment 5 = 20, 20, 20). Cow and calf performance was measured the same as Exp. 1, but every 21 days. Supplementation early in the grazing season tended to improve cow weight gain and body condition; however, there was no effect on calf performance. Fecal output of EV and LA did not increase in either experiment with supplementation. In conclusion, strategically invoked MTB-100TM consumption can increase performance of cows grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue forage.
