I have written and translated a collection of poetry into German, comparing the obvious constraints of minimalist poetry to longer and prosaic forms. In addition to pertinent literature, I utilize my educational background in German as well as a recent foreign language internship to explore the limitations and complexities of translating contemporary minimalist poetry. I focus on how, because of its inherent need for syntactic brevity, minimalist poetry can often be one of the most difficult types of poetry to translate.

A Certain Semite is not intended to be a history of handwriting, but rather a restriction to that part of the history and development of writing which has had either an indirect, or a direct effect on American writing. Although some authorities maintain that there can be no chronological order to the development of handwriting, it seems to me that there is a reasonably understandable order which can be followed in a reasonably discernible route from the Semite to us. A Certain Semite is an effort to trace handwriting from him who was, according to discoveries made in the past hundred years, the first to conceive of the idea of writing, and also to touch upon pre-writing steps made by more barbaric peoples before him, without whom he would not have been able to give to the world his epic discovery.

Lea Goldberg [1911-1970] is one of modern Hebrew literature’s most significant poet/translators. This thesis approaches her early poetry and prose from the perspective of three theories of translation. ‘Polysystems’, ‘norms’, and ‘pseudotranslation’ grew from the scholarly and translation-lineage in Hebrew literary studies that Goldberg herself contributed to. Utilizing these three methods of reading, this thesis argues that translation’s thematization in Goldberg’s creative work is evidence for the poet’s ideal for a cosmopolitan, multilingual, national literature in the new Jewish State. This receptive stance to previous and concurrent literary traditions was met with much skepticism and criticism from Goldberg’s colleagues, and as a result, Goldberg’s oeuvre occupies a more peripheral position than several of her contemporaries.

The same age which produced the great epic, Beowulf, also produced some of the most beautiful, most lyrical, poetry ever written. Scholars who first looked into The Exeter Book Boomed to have been less impressed by this subjective, elegiac poetry than they were by the monumental epic which had already been acclaimed as one of the greatest literary accomplishments of our ancestors. The interest in the lyrics has grown slowly through the years since 1831, when the first transcript vas made of this eleventh century manuscript.

The object of the survey about to be described, was to establish the value of the artificial language test as a prognostic basis for language aptitude. Could the artificial language test be a reliable guide for determining a student's linguistic ability? Teachers have long needed something to give them an index to pupil's capabilities so as to meet better their needs in the class room. Counselors have wanted such tests to aid them in directing young people into channels of endeavor where they can best achieve success

El propósito de este proyecto de tesis es presentar una traducción analítica al idioma guaraní de un apólogo escrito en español medieval con el objetivo de demostrar la utilidad de los ejercicios de traducción literaria que faciliten el aprendizaje de idiomas. La transferencia lingüística y cultural de un texto medieval al español moderno y consecutivamente al guaraní constituye un ejemplo del esfuerzo cognitivo que debe realizar un traductor/una traductora para buscar soluciones e ir articulando poco a poco el rompecabezas que posteriormente se convertirá en la nueva versión de la obra, pero siempre respetando y conservando la esencia del mensaje original del autor/de la autora.

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

Much linguistic research has been done on the fictional argot of A Clockwork Orange, known as Nadsat, but few efforts have been made to expand beyond the classification and analysis of Nadsat. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper looks at the overarching discourse of A Clockwork Orange and aims to answer three questions: What exigencies and discourses inform the creation of these works? What techniques and power structures are employed in the construction of these works? How do these works shape or attempt to shape the discourse? To answer these questions, I look at three instances of the discourse: Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, and Krege’s translation, Clockwork Orange. These instances are varied over time of publication (1962, 1971, 1997), language (English, German), medium (novel, film), and culture (British, American, German), allowing enough variance to examine how the discourse changes to meet the needs of its participants.

Every foreign missionary is confronted with one basic task. Without its successful accomplishment his work as a missionary will fail. It is the task of learning the language of the people among whom he is working. However laudable his motives may be, however great his consecration, and however capable he may be in many tasks, if he fails to gain the ability to understand readily speech addressed to him or to communicate his own thoughts intelligibly and accurately to them, he is working behind a closed door — a door which he failed to unlock, It is the purpose of this study (1) to inquire into the objectives and methods of language study; (2) to determine what preparation can actually be given the student for the task of learning the language; (3) to outline the courses to be offered. As not all missionaries have the same work, it will also be necessary to determine what courses would be an advantage to every missionary, and what additional courses are to be expected of those who have a more specialized language, teaching or theological task.
