Perceptions Of Students And Instructors About Using Remote Access Technology In Programming Language Courses: A Case Study

Tursak, Muhammet 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigated the perceptions of students, the instructor and the laboratory assistant about the use of remote access technology in group projects of programming language courses. Their perceptions are investigated in terms of three aspects: effects of the use of this technology on their motivation, the perceived usefulness and the perceived ease of use of this technology. A central shared project server was installed for group project studies of students. To access to the central project server, Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, which is a remote access technology, was used. The data were collected from 2nd grade university students by using a computer attitude scale and a questionnaire developed by the researcher. Also, interviews were conducted with the course instructor and the laboratory assistant. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions and descriptive analysis methods were used to analyze the results. In results, the high percentage of indecisive students, which is between 38% and 48%, was noticeable. It was concluded that by increasing the length of usage of the system this high ratio may be decreased to reasonable levels. On the other hand, high number of the rest of the students reported positive perceptions. They expressed that remote access technology is a useful and also easy to use technology. It is concluded that students, the instructor and the laboratory assistant accepted the use of this new technology in their learning environment. Also, like instructor and the laboratory assistant, they stated that it affected their motivation towards the group projects in a positive way.

Evaluation of a French 202 Website Used in a Traditional Face-to-face Environment

Flores, Diego Gonzalo 12 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The Center for Teaching and Learning, Independent Study, and the Department of French and Italian at Brigham Young University collaborated to develop the French 202 Website to be used with the French 202 course. Currently, the French 202 Website is used with the French 202 Independent Study course and with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation focused on the French 202 Website as it is used with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation was conducted in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Brigham Young University (BYU). Based on the information collected, the evaluator found that (a) faculty used the website to supplement the face-to-face French 202 course, (b) students indicated that the website appears to function according to the criteria for this evaluation, and (c) students felt that because they used the website they were better able to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

Advanced Second-Language Reading and Vocabulary Learning in the Parallel-Language University

Mežek, Špela January 2013 (has links)
Due to the internationalisation of higher education, the use of English at higher education institutions has become widespread. Today an increasing number of students participate in courses with the local language as medium of instruction but with textbooks in English. These have been called parallel-language courses, because they are expected to facilitate learning disciplinary discourse in two languages: the local language and English. This thesis reports an exploration of Swedish students' reading and learning from English textbooks in parallel-language courses. The overarching aim was to investigate the relationship between the students' Swedish and English reading habits and reading proficiency, their academic biliteracy, and incidental learning of subject-specific terminology in English from reading. The study also set out to identify pedagogical solutions to facilitate students' reading and learning from reading in English. The investigation comprised four studies which utilised a variety of methods and approaches, both qualitative and quantitative. Participants were Swedish and British students of biology and Swedish students of English. The results show that many Swedish students are capable of reading and learning from texts in Swedish and English without experiencing serious difficulties, although additional support is required for the learning of English terminology. The findings also indicate that some students' difficulty when reading in English is not due to poor English language proficiency, but rather a range of other factors such as weak general literacy skills, low motivation, low subject and vocabulary knowledge, note-taking strategies, slow reading speed, and time. For some students, learning is also rendered difficult by their self-perceptions and beliefs about reading and learning. Based on my findings, I propose a range of practices for EAP and subject teachers to adopt in order to improve reading and learning in parallel-language courses. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted.

This study aims at investigating the speech of the teacher of English about his/her activity within Private Language Courses (PLCs), revealing the discursive images (DEUSDARÁ, ROCHA, 2006) that they construct about their work and about themselves at institutions of that nature. That implies unveiling the meanings and the materialization, extracted from discursive resonances, of the debate which go through the relation: education and experience/prescriptive work and real work (GUÉRIN et al, 2001). The theoretical-methodological assumptions that support this research lie in the interlocution between language and work. With regard to the studies on work, our approach was built by concepts from Situated Ergonomics (LAVILLE, 1977; VIDAL, 1998; GUÉRIN et al, 2001) and Ergology (SCHWARTZ, 2010). In the field of language studies, our focus of analysis was based upon the Dialogical Conception (BAKHTIN [VOLOSHÍNOV], 2009; 2011), in dialogue with the Discourse Analysis perspective on enunciative basis (MAINGUENEAU, 1997; 2008a; 2008b; 2009; 2013; 2015). Within this interface, we gave preference to the speech about work (LACOSTE, 1998). To analyze and interpret the discursive excerpts produced by a female graduate teacher and a male non-graduate teacher that teach English at PLCs, through the event interview (DAHER, 1998), we elaborated a systematized guideline framed as a three thematic chart, i.e.: (1) knowledge from education; (2) knowledge from experience; (3) tension between the prescriptive work and real one. The analyses point to the work of the teacher as a construction encompassed by teacher education and experience, within an unfinished, dynamic and live process, in which the values that circulate in the situation of work play a major role in the construction and reconstruction of new pieces of knowledge, by means of debate of norms. Thus, by investigating the excerpts we had access, through the discursive images, to two sorts of ethos of teachers functioning in the situation of work at those environments of teaching and learning of foreign language, revealing unique ways of being within the profession

An analysis of factors predicting graduation of students at Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center

Wong, Chin Han 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis analyzes factors related to academic, military and personal backgrounds that affect graduation of students enrolled at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). The data in this thesis were taken from DLIFLC and only students from the four principal services with valid DLAB scores were considered for this study. Also, as DLI is concerned with students who do not make the grade academically, entries having administrative attritions were not considered. Four logistic regression models were analyzed for the purposes of this study: Graduation of students across all four categories of languages taught at DLIFLC, graduation of students in Category I languages, graduation of students in Category III languages and graduation of students in Category IV languages. The results of this study can assist DLIFLC in investing its resources in students with the best chances of success and assist the staff in identifying the weaker students from the onset of the course. / Major, Republic of Singapore Air Force
