Indigenous Australian women who perform contemporary music are acutely aware that Aboriginalist discourse has created unrealistic expectations and public perceptions of Indigenous Australian performance. The theory of Aboriginalism is critiqued and interrogated in this thesis in relation to Indigenous Australian women, performance, and race. This thesis addresses the complex and contradictory ways that Aboriginalist discourse fixes non-Indigenous expectations of Indigenous Australian performance, gender, and race by exploring how the performers themselves work within and against these Aboriginalist constructions through their music. One of the immediate effects of Aboriginalism is that it silences Indigenous Australians. In academic discourse and popular media, the voices of Indigenous women who perform contemporary music are rarely heard and often overlooked or ignored. This thesis aims to redress and understand this gender imbalance by focusing on Indigenous women and their contemporary music and illustrate how Indigenous Australian women performers are enacting new types of agency to negotiate their way through, around, and over one-dimensional Aboriginalist constructions of themselves to self-define more positive and diverse identities as Indigenous Australian women. This thesis is divided into four parts. Part One (Chapters One, Two, and Three) provides necessary background to the study. Chapter One introduces the topic and poses research questions in relation to Aboriginalism, Indigenous women, and contemporary performance. Chapter Two examines a number of themes which emerge in the existing literature relating to Indigenous Australian musicians performing contemporary music. Chapter Three locates Indigenous Australian women in this academic discourse and explores some possible reasons for the increasing number of contemporary music recordings by Indigenous Australian women since the 1990s. Part Two (Chapters Four, Five, and Six) positions this study theoretically and methodologically. Chapter Four outlines the theoretical framework that informs this project while Chapter Five discusses the methodological issues and challenges I faced throughout the research process. Chapter Six introduces the Indigenous women performers who took part in this study. Interrogeant les modalités d’insertion professionnelle de médecins allophones en migration, avec une connaissance partielle de la langue pratiquée sur le terrain – les services hospitaliers francophones en France, cette thèse propose un positionnement inversé : acquérir / s’approprier la langue dans les relations professionnelles et non pas apprendre la langue de manière décontextualisée, pour ensuite s’intégrer socialement. Une compétence professionnelle et sa reconnaissance sont susceptibles de faciliter l’accès à la langue, à son appropriation par l’insertion professionnelle et les relations qui s’y construisent. L’objectif de ce travail est de contribuer à faire évoluer les représentations des acteurs de la didactique des langues, des sciences de l’éducation, et des études médicales, afin d’assurer une prise en compte de ce que sont les individus (leur historicité et leur savoir) et de viser une meilleure articulation entre les acquis et les apprentissages (scolaires ou professionnels) à construire / Examining the conditions of insertion of allophone medical doctors in migration, with a very partial knowledge of the language used in the field – francophone hospitals in France, this study, suggests a reverse positioning : acquiring / appropriating language while practising in the professional context and not learning it in a decontextualised way, to achieve social integration. Professional competence and especially its recognition are factors that facilitate access to language and to its appropriation through professional integration. This study seeks to cause a change in the attitudes of those working in the field of Language Teaching, Educational Sciences, and Medical Studies, so that account should be taken of what constitutes individuals’profiles (their historicity and knowledge) in the search of a more productive articulation between achievements and learning experiences (academic or professional) to be constructed

Perception et intégration de l'image dans le cadre d'un enseignement-apprentissage du FLE / Perception and image integration in the context of a teaching and learning of French as a foreign language

Cette recherche, qui s’inscrit dans le domaine de la didactique des langues-cultures, porte sur l'intégration des images dans les méthodes du FLE et s’attache à expliciter les avantages mais aussi les limites de son exploitation dans les cours de langues. En se basant sur le concept d'image en tant qu'un support visuel, notre recherche tente de cerner dans quelles mesures l’application d’une image favorise l’apprentissage d’une langue chez les apprenants. Notre étude empirique a été effectuée au sein d’une université à Paris avec des apprenants de niveaux A1 à B2. De ce fait, nous avons recueilli des données en observant les interactions et les productions orales et écrites d’un public estudiantin pluriculturel face aux images. A travers l’étude de trois corpus successifs (questionnaires, observations, entretiens) nous avons dressé un état des lieux de la présence des images dans les cours du FLE, ses apports dans l’acquisition de L2 et nous avons explicité l’approche des enseignants vis-à-vis de ces supports didactiques. Ce qui nous permet de nous focaliser sur quelques éléments qui devraient être différemment mis en œuvre afin d’optimiser l’exploitation des images dans l’enseignement des langues-cultures. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les apprenants déploient des stratégies communicatives et d’appropriation afin d’exprimer leurs réactions face aux images et de participer aux échanges. L’analyse des interactions autour des documents visuels témoigne des conditions favorables à un apprentissage potentiel. L’examen approfondi de notre corpus relève d’une occultation de la dimension interculturelle, aussi bien dans les tâches proposées que dans les interactions engendrées par les images. Ces échanges sont fortement influencés par les actions des enseignants, d’où l’émergence de la nécessité d’une formation. / The present research lies in the field of the didactics of languages and cultures. It focuses on the integration of pictures in the teaching of French as a foreign language and it also aims at explaining both the benefits and disadvantages of their use in language courses. Based on the concept of pictures as visual supports, this research attempts to define the potential of applying a picture in language learning among learners. Our empirical study was conducted in a university in Paris with A1 and B2 learners. In this respect, data were collected by observing the interactions and oral and written productions of pluricultural students faced with pictures. Through the study of three successive corpora (questionnaires, observations, interviews), we drew up a status report on the presence of pictures in lessons, its contributions to the acquisition of L2 and we explained the approach of teachers towards these teaching materials. This allows us to focus on a few different elements that should be implemented to optimize the use of pictures in the teaching of languages and cultures. Research findings in this study indicated that learners engage communicative and appropriation strategies to express their reactions to the pictures and to participate in interactions. Analyses of these interactions around the visual material reflect favorable conditions for potential learning. A thorough review of our corpus shows an occultation of the intercultural dimension both in the proposed tasks and in the interactions generated by the pictures. These interactions are strongly influenced by teacher actions, which points out to the the need for training.

Au moment où les échanges interculturels s’intensifient, les expériences de mobilité commencent à un âge de plus en plus jeune, et l’accès à l’Internet permet des rencontres interculturelles sans aucun déplacement géographique, l’enseignement du chinois laisse apparaître une nouvelle attente : le développement des compétences culturelles et interculturelles qui permettent aux apprenants d’avoir une plus grande ouverture envers d’autres cultures et de maintenir une relation non-conflictuelle avec l’Autre. Pourtant, la réalité nous fait voir qu’il existe un décalage entre les objectifs culturels et interculturels des matériaux pédagogiques, des enseignants, des élèves et de leurs parents, et leur mise en place dans l’enseignement, un décalage entre les objectifs théoriques préconisés par les documents officiels et les objectifs dans la pratique, ainsi qu’un décalage entre les compétences culturelles et interculturelles et leur reconnaissance par le système scolaire français.La présente recherche s’inscrit dans une didactique des langues et des cultures ouverte à la pluridisciplinarité et emprunte notamment à l’anthropologie, à la sociologie et à la psychologie. Elle prend comme terrain d’étude la cité scolaire Emile Zola de Rennes et s’appuie sur un corpus mixte d’entretiens, de matériaux pédagogiques et des documents officiels. Considérant comme acteurs sociaux les 5 enseignants, les 20 élèves et les 16 parents, elle a pu montrer l’importance les facteurs non-scolaires dans le développement des compétences culturelles et interculturelles des apprenants dans l’enseignement du chinois face au contexte secondaire français. / In the current context when the cultural exchanges increase, the mobility experiences start at a young age and the use of Internet allows the intercultural encounters without any geographical movement, the Chinese teaching reveals a new expectation : the development of cultural and intercultural competences that enables learners to have a greater openness towards other cultures and maintain a non-conflictual relationship with the other. However, the reality shows us that there is a gap between the cultural and intercultural objectives of teaching materials, teachers, students and parents, and their implementation in teaching, a gap between the theoretical objectives recommended by official documents and the objectives in practice, and also a gap between cultural and intercultural competences and their recognition by the French education system.Our research falls under the didactics of languages and cultures, open to pluridisciplinarity, and borrows especially from anthropology, sociology and psychology. It takes as study field the middle school Emile Zola of Rennes and relies on a mixed corpus of interviews, teaching materials and the official documents. Considering as social actors the 5 teachers, 20 students and 16 parents, the study was able to show the importance of social factors in the development of cultural and intercultural competences of learners in Chinese teaching of French secondary education.
