Contrôle non destructif par ultrasons-laser de structures pleines à axe de révolution / Non destructive testing of filled structures with revolution axis based on laser ultrasonics

Nowinski, Vianney 19 July 2016 (has links)
The development of new materials in industries creates new issues about their control. It is the case for SKF introduces ceramic rollers in its bearings. These rollers can have two different geometries, cylinder or barrel. Most methods of Non Destructive Testing developed for steel rollers analysis are not adapted for ceramic rollers. In fact, these equipments use electrical of metal materials properties to control a solid. In consequence, it is necessary to develop a new approach for ceramic structures. In this report, we are studying Ultrasonics Laser method. The use of lasers allows to generate and to detect ultrasound waves without contact on steel or ceramic media. A study of directivity patterns for the most common thermoelastic sources and calculation of dispersive curves due to cylindrical geometry have been done. The results of these studies allow us to interpret different signals obtained during ours experimentations. We have shown that the method was efficient for the detection of different types of defects present on ceramic and steel rollers. An original approach has been proposed and studied, theoretically and experimentally, to reduce significantly the time of control for a cylindrical roller. This approach have been extended to a ceramic barrel roller with success.

Modélisation de la génération d'ultrasons par laser : application à l'inspection de composants aéronautiques métalliques et composites / Modeling of laser ultrasonic transduction : application to the NDE of composite and metallic aircraft component

Anagnostopoulos, Eleftherios 25 March 2016 (has links)
The laser-ultrasonic technique is an attractive Non Destructive Testing technology forthe aviation industry. Indeed, its non-contact ultrasonic generation process could allow inspectingcomplex mechanical part at high sampling rates. The purpose of this work consists in the modelling ofthe generation of ultrasonic waves by a laser pulse in metallic or composite materials in bilayer geometry. In this work, we seek to analyze in detail the influence of coatings on the ultrasonic generation processsuch as paint or resin coatings usually used in industrial parts. In a first chapter, we propose two differentapproaches of a semi-analytical modelling of the generation and propagation of ultrasonic waves in aone-dimensional assumption of a bilayer sample. As one of them handles shorter computation times,we decide to rigorously show the equivalence of these different approaches focusing on the boundaryvalue problem. In the three last chapters, different models of the directivity patterns of ultrasonic wavesgenerated by a laser pulse are given in geometries of increasing complexity, from a homogeneousmaterial to a bilayer considering the intermediate case of two half-spaces of various optical properties. As a result, we clearly show the influence of a superficial skin layer on the laser-generated ultrasoundsemitted in composite materials. We also discuss briefly on the interest of the directivity patterns to modelelastic sources generated by laser in a ray formalism used in the CIVA software dedicated to NDTsimulations and developed at CEA.

Machine Learning of Laser Ultrasonic Data to Predict Material Properties

Tuvenvall, Filip January 2023 (has links)
The hardness of steel is an important quality parameter for several industrial applications. Conventional mechanical testing is used in quality testing for material hardness and the method is time-consuming, can cause material mix-ups, and results in material waste. To address this issue, a possible on-line method for non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques such as laser ultrasonic (LUS) measurements has been explored to replace mechanical testing. In this thesis, machine learning models are trained to predict steel hardness using LUS measurements and data from the production process. LUS data is collected from steel samples with a measured hardness using the Brinell protocol. Measured hardness values between 250 and 700 Brinell are used as the target values for the models. The production process data includes the chemical composition and tempering temperature. The models used in this thesis are Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Multilayered Perceptron (MLP), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The first two mentioned models use feature-engineered data from LUS measurements. These features include the time-of-flight for ultrasonic waves. CNN uses the raw LUS data as a univariate time series as input. Each of the models is trained solely on data from LUS measurements and both LUS and production process data to determine the effect of adding production process data. The models are optimized and tuned based on their loss on a validation set. The models are evaluated against each other based on their root mean squared error (RMSE) on a test set to determine the best performing model. The best performing model is an XGBoost model using LUS and production process data. The results indicate that models using solely LUS data can not replace or partially replace mechanical testing. The best performing model using only LUS data has a RMSE of 69.9 Brinell, which is above the required performance of a RMSE below 50 Brinell. The results also indicate a large boost in performance if including data from the production process. However, implementing this solution in the industry without losing accuracy in measurements is a hard task. While the models are not ready for direct implementation in industry, the results demonstrate potential for further research in this area.

Schmieder, Felix 27 October 2023 (has links)
In optogenetics, for example, single foci with a maximum diameter of 10 μm, addressable in three dimensions, as well as complex light patterns are necessary for the the activation or inhibition of single cells or whole cell groups, respectively, to perform in-depth analyses of neuronal networks. Computer-generated holograms (CGH) are best suited for this purpose due to their versatile possibilities of amplitude and phase modulation. To display these, fast spatial light modulators (SLM) with a large number of pixels are required. Widely used liquid crystal SLMs, however, often have a megapixel resolution but a frame rate of only a few Hertz. Due to innovations in the consumer sector, microelectromechanical scanner mirrors and ferroelectric binary phase modulators are available, which offer high spatial and temporal resolution at the same time. Building on such devices with 250 Hz and 1.7 kHz frame rate, respectively, this work presents the development and application of computer-aided adaptive optical systems for laser-generated ultrasound and optogenetics. Based on computer simulations, methods for the fast generation of binary phase holograms were compared. For Fresnel holograms, an error diffusion method led to reconstructed images with highest similarity to the desired intensity distributions and was more than 10× faster than the second best method, which was based on the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. In the field of laser-generated ultrasound, a microelectromechanical modulator was used to generate ring-shaped illumination patterns of different diameters, which allow a focussing of shear waves in varying depths in an aluminium workpiece. This way, material properties can potentially be detected without contact and with a high bandwidth. For optogenetic network analysis, two systems for cellular and subcellular three-dimensional stimulation and inhibition were developed. Using ferroelectric liquid crystal modulators, frame rates up to the kilohertz range can be achieved. An iterative correction procedure with Zernike polynomials was able to correct system-inherent aberrations to achieve almost diffraction-limited lateral spatial resolution. Applying these systems, the temporal evolution of neural network connectivity was observed. Through targeted single-cell stimulation, effects not visible with electrical stimulation alone, such as distance-dependent signal velocities and connections between neurons undetectable by electrical recording, were observed. This opens up new ways for pharmacological investigations and the analysis of neurodegenerative diseases.:Abkürzungsverzeichnis V Symbolverzeichnis VII Abbildungsverzeichnis XI Tabellenverzeichnis XV 1 Motivation/Einleitung 1 2 Grundlagen der Strahlformung 5 2.1 Physikalisch-mathematische Grundlagen 5 2.1.1 Von den Maxwellgleichungen zur Helmholtzgleichung 5 2.1.2 Die Winkelspektrumsmethode zur Beschreibung der Lichtausbreitung 6 2.1.3 Phasen-Beschreibung einer Linse 8 2.1.4 Zernike-Polynome 10 2.2 Computergenerierte Hologramme 10 2.2.1 Direkte Berechnung 11 2.2.2 Fourier- und Fresnelhologramme 12 2.2.3 Simulated Annealing 16 2.2.4 Phase retrieval mittels Gerchberg-Saxton-Algorithmus 19 3 Binäre Phasenhologramme 21 3.1 Gerchberg-Saxton 23 3.2 Thresholding 23 3.3 Error Diffusion 24 3.4 Methodenvergleich - Fresnelhologramme 28 3.5 Methodenvergleich - Fourierhologramme 31 3.6 Zusammenfassung 33 4 Anwendung I: Laserultraschall 35 4.1 Einleitung 35 4.2 Problemstellung 35 4.3 Strahlformung beliebiger Wellenfronten mit Phase Retrieval 37 4.4 Versuchsaufbau 40 4.5 Durchgeführte Messungen 42 4.6 Zusammenfassung 45 5 Anwendung II: Optogenetik 47 5.1 Problemstellung und Stand der Technik 47 5.2 Versuchsaufbau für Fresnelhologramme 53 5.2.1 Versuchsaufbau für die Verwendung von Fresnelhologrammen 53 5.2.2 Ferroelektrischer binärer räumlicher Phasenmodulator 54 5.2.3 Berechnung computergenerierter Fresnelhologramme 56 5.2.4 Verwendete Zellkultur 57 5.2.5 Minimale Ortsauflösung 58 5.2.6 Framerate des Modulators 60 5.2.7 Erzeugung mehrerer Fokusse 61 5.2.8 Beispielhafte Einzelzellstimulation 63 5.3 Versuchsaufbau für die Verwendung von Fourierhologrammen 65 5.3.1 Experimenteller Aufbau 66 5.3.2 Abschätzung der Ortsauflösung 68 5.3.3 Erzeugung von Lichtmustern und Aberrationskorrektur 69 5.3.4 Erzeugung mehrerer Fokusse 72 5.3.5 Testmessungen mit Fluoreszenzpartikeln in 2d/3d 73 5.3.6 Zusammenfassung 77 5.4 Untersuchung der Konnektivität neuronaler Netze 78 5.4.1 Zellkultur 80 5.4.2 Lokalisierung einzelner Neuronen 80 5.4.3 Experimentelles Vorgehen 81 5.4.4 Ergänzungen zum holographischen Stimulationsaufbau 83 5.4.5 Spike-Sorting 84 5.4.6 Vergleich von Aktivitätsprofilen von Weitfeld- und holographischer Stimulation 85 5.4.7 Peri-Event-Raster und -Zeithistogramme 86 5.4.8 Post-Stimulus-Zeit-Histogramm (PSTH) der holographischen Stimulation 86 5.4.9 Entfernungsabhängige Reaktionen der Neuronen auf holographische Stimulation 86 5.4.10 Funktionellen Konnektivität der Spontanaktivität (Baseline) 87 5.4.11 Kartierung funktioneller Konnektivität durch Einzelzellstimulation 88 5.4.12 Holographische Einzelzellstimulation 90 5.4.13 Zeitliche Dynamik der Konnektivität 95 5.4.14 Diskussion 99 5.4.15 Zusammenfassung 101 6 Zusammenfassung 103 Literaturverzeichnis 107

Contribution à l’inspection d’échantillons de fabrication additive métallique par ondes de Rayleigh au moyen d’une méthode ultrasons-laser / Contribution to additive manufacturing metallic sample inspection using Rayleigh wave generated by laser-ultrasonics

Millon, Célia 27 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the detection of flaws in laser metal deposition (LMD) additive manufacturing process samples towards an in situ control of the process. The in situ control foreseen concerns the last layers deposited by the process (316L and Inconel 718 steel) for which porosities and cracks may appear (~ 100 µm). The inspection is performed by laser-ultrasonics (LU), an all-optical and non-invasive technic. Experiments are conducted in thermoelastic mode. The LMD process gives rise to coarse grain microstructure and surface roughness, that make the control tricky. Indeed, those characteristics generate scattering elastic waves. Thus, this work contributes to the better comprehension of those phenomena and their effects of the detection on subsurface flaws which dimensions are close to the acoustic wavelength. Surface inspection has been optimized by designing an optical setup, improving the Rayleigh wave generation by using a thin laser line source (~200 µm). Hence, the spectral content has been increased until it reaches 10 MHz, that is to say a wavelength equals to 700 µm (λR). Then, the limits have been brought out through the inspection of LMD samples. Those samples include sided drilled holes and notches which dimensions are less than λR, on rough surface (multiple scattering of Rayleigh wave). Moreover, real subsurface flaws inspections have been studied. The flaws have been created by the instability of one of the process parameter: the hatch (distance between each layer), or by a bad powder quality. By intentionally deteriorating those parameters, the samples, then, have porosity rate (Φ) with ranging from 0.5% to 10%. Finally, two correlation methods have been studied to discriminate porosity rate: through the study of the normalized cross correlation function and by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The first method, simple and fast to implement, does not allow distinguishing the porosity rates. Nevertheless, the PCA indicates that it is possible to discriminate all the flaws. Finally, preliminary tests have been carried out to show that LU measurements is feasible on rough surfaces, while keeping a good signal-to-noise ratio, without averaging, during an automated displacement.

Méthodes ultrasons laser pour la caractérisation locale d’aciers polycristallins / Laser ultrasonic methods for polyrystalline steel characterization

Gasteau, Damien 24 November 2016 (has links)
Laser ultrasonics are among the most interesting experimental technics to answer the need of industrials in NDT applications. These non contact methods allow to generate and detect elastic surface wave propagating on typical distances of several tens of microns. The main objective of this thesis is to test laser ultrasonics methods for polycristalline steel study. These materials are composed of several anisotropic crystals with differents sizes and orientations. Among the essential parameters to describe such material, the determination of elastic parameters and texturations are key to good understanting and for the modelisation of material in NDT studies. In a first part, velocities variations due to elastic anisotropy and crystalline orientation of grains is assessed by measuring surface acoustic wave velocity. The experimental results are used in the form of statistical distribution of velocity combined with a numerical model to evaluate elastic parameters.Stainless casted steel is a complex material presenting large biphasic grains. They are here studied to show the presence of sub-structures.Finally, a weld sample presenting typical structuration of ellongated grains is studied to show the presence of preferential orientation.

Caractérisation de couches minces par ondes de surface générées et détectées par sources lasers / Thin films characterization using surface acoustic waves generated and detected by laser sources

Fourez, Sabrina 14 May 2013 (has links)
Thin films deposited on silicon substrates are very common especially in microelectronic applications. The physical properties expected for these types of structures depend on the properties of the layer. Therefore, it is essential to know elastic parameters and thickness of the films considered. Furthermore, some layer defects detection is often required. The aim of this work was to contribute to the characterization of structures composed of a single layer deposited on a substrate. For this, laser ultrasonics offers many advantages since it is nondestructive and non-contact method. Surface acoustic waves excited in a frequency range up to 45 MHz are used. Analytical models have been developed and experimental results have also been compared with some finite element simulations. More specifically, we have shown that it was possible to obtain the thickness of the layer and all elastic parameters of both substrate and layer. In addition, we have been interested in the detection of various defects with a broadband and quasi-monochromatic excitation. Original results concerning the effect of a lack of layer with a specific geometry on the first Rayleigh mode or even adhesion problems were presented. Concerning this last point, an innovative method to tell difference between high and low adhesion was introduced.

Génération d'ondes acoustiques de surface par différentes sources lasers : applications à la caractérisation sans contact de défauts / Surface acoustic wave generation using different laser sources - Application to the non-contact characterization of flaws

Faëse, Frédéric 10 December 2013 (has links)
Industries like aeronautics or iron and steel industry are more and more interested in laser ultrasonics, which is a cutting-edge technique used in non-destructive testing and evaluation. The main advantages of this acoustic wave generation and detection method are its noncontact feature and its ability to characterize high temperature and/or geometrically complex materials for which conventional methods implementation turns out to be difficult.During this thesis, we dealt with the propagation of surface acoustic waves (SAW) generatedby laser sources and their interaction with different flaws. As analytical models describing theinteraction between SAW and flaws are limited to a few special cases, the theoretical study was preferentially led thanks to the finite element method (FEM) that gave the different waves displacement fields. Experimental results first confirmed analytical models and FEM results suitability. Then, they consisted in studying the interaction between SAW and flaws for different flaw shapes and different thermoelastic sources.FEM results combined with experimental results especially led to an original characterizationmethod based on mode conversion giving both the flaw position and depth thanks to a singleA-scan. Unusual thermoelastic sources have also been implemented and their potentialities in non destructive testing and evaluation applications have been highlighted.

This thesis focuses on the study of elastic and damping properties of micrometric fibers that are used for the reinforcementof composite materials. Homogeneous and circular artificial fibers were studied experimentaly by the application of the laser ultrasonics (LU) technique, which was coupled to modal identification based on the simulation of the vibration modes using finite element modeling. In the case of plant fibers, the application of the LU method requires prior knowledge of the 3D geometry of the single fiber in the measurement area. In order to determine the geometry of the fiber, we have developed anin-situ optical projection micro-tomography (OPT) device using the digital holography technique. This PhD thesis is organized around four chapters. The first chapter provides a state of the art of the micrometric fibers and the most common methods used to characterize their mechanical properties. The second chapter is elevated to numerical methods of calculation of the propagation of guided acoustic waves in cylindrical structures (solid cylinder, pipes, arbitrary cross-section). In order to predict the propagation of guided acoustic waves in such structures, several methods are presented. The third chapter is devoted to the experimental study of elastic properties and vibrational behavior of micrometric fibers using laser ultrasonics technique (LU). The last chapter of the manuscript presents the principle of the OPT method based on digital holography microscopy, performed in situ on the LU measurement area of the fiber, which will be used tocollect the actual 3D shape of a single flax fiber.
