Previous issue date: 2007 / Resumo: Esta dissertação busca analisar de maneira comparativa os livros Casa-grande & senzala e Radiografía de la pampa, escrito pelo brasileiro Gilberto Freyre e pelo argentino Ezequiel Martínez Estrada. A intenção é compreender as interpretações histórico-sociais dos dois autores que feitas através de análises sociológicas conseguiram englobar os problemas específicos de seus países, ao mesmo tempo em que possibilitam uma reflexão sobre o continente latino-americano como um todo. A comparação será feita a partir de temáticas em comum existentes nos dois ensaios, apresentando as condições históricas, políticas e culturais no Brasil e na Argentina nos anos de 1920-30. A dissertação centra-se em Casa-grande & senzala e Radiografía de la pampa, o que não impede que outras obras de Freyre e Estrada sejam, ocasionalmente, utilizadas durante o desenvolvimento da análise / Abstract: The goal of this paper is to establish a comparative analysis of Casa-grande & senzala, by the brazilian Gilberto Freyre, and Radiografía de la pampa, written by the argentinian Ezequiel Martínez Estrada. The aim is to understand the social and historical interpretations that both authors managed to established, through sociological analysis, of the specific problems relating to each of their countries, as well as Latin America as a whole. The comparison will be established based on common themes presented by both pieces, presenting the historical, political and cultural realities of Brazil and Argentina in the 1920-30s. Although this paper concerns itself specifically with Casa-grande & senzala and Radiografía de la pampa, other works by Freyre and Estrada may, eventually, be referred to during the course of this analysis / Mestrado / Mestre em Sociologia

Previous issue date: 2015 / Resumo: A tese pretende analisar de que formas a questão sobre a existência de seres humanos no Novo Mundo foi abordada em dois períodos distintos: a virada do século XVI para o XVII e ao longo do século XIX, momentos em que a produção de reflexões sobre este tema aumentou consideravelmente. No primeiro período, observamos que as dúvidas sobre a origem dos indígenas não surgem durante os contatos iniciais com os europeus, mas se desenvolvem ao longo do século. Além disso, identificamos um aumento progressivo das representações que enfatizavam a multiplicidade dos indígenas, nas quais as reflexões do jesuíta espanhol José de Acosta, que analisou os debates anteriores sobre os ancestrais dos americanos e dividiu os "povos bárbaros" em três níveis de desenvolvimento, ocupam um papel central. Para um número crescente de autores, as grandes diferenças identificadas entre os diversos grupos que habitavam as terras americanas seriam fruto de origens específicas e hierarquizadas. No século XIX, a percepção da multiplicidade dos indígenas passa a ser incorporada, entre outros aspectos, ao conceito de raça e aos discursos sobre a memória e a identidade nacional elaborados nas colônias americanas recém-independentes. Neste segundo período, há a identificação de um índio "nacional", geralmente restrito ao passado, que teria uma origem diferente e superior a dos outros habitantes do continente. Novamente, as diferenças identificadas pelos autores entre os povos americanos são interpretadas a partir das origens: grupos considerados como mais avançados procederiam de povos diferentes dos grupos "inferiores" que habitaram e ainda habitavam o continente. Divisão e hierarquização estas, profundamente influenciadas pelas reflexões sobre o Oriente, fruto das diversas expedições e descobertas arqueológicas ocorridas no período / Abstract: The thesis aims to analyze in which ways the question about the existence of human beings in the New World was addressed on two different time periods: the turn of the 16th to the 17th century and throughout the 19th century, moments in which the production of reflections on this issue increased considerably. In the first period, we observed that the doubts about the origin of the Americans were not raised during the first contacts with the Europeans, but developed over the century. Furthermore, we identified a progressive increase in representations that emphasized the multiplicity of the indigenous, in which the reflections of the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta, who examined the previous debates about the ancestors of the Americans and divided the "barbarians peoples" in three levels of development, occupies a central role. For a growing number of authors, the major differences identified among the various groups that inhabited the American lands would result from specific and hierarchical backgrounds. In the 19th century, the perception of indigenous multiplicity becomes incorporated, among other aspects, into the concept of race and the discourses on memory and national identity, developed in the newly independent American colonies. In this second period, there is the identification of a "national" Indian, usually restricted to the past, who would have a different and superior origin than the other inhabitants of the continent. Once again, the differences identified by the authors among the American people are interpreted as related to their origins: groups considered more advanced would behave differently from "inferior" groups who had inhabited and still inhabited the continent. Movements in Chicano music : performing culture, performing politics, 1965-1979Azcona, Stevan César, 1972- 31 August 2012 (has links)
More than a confined account of the musical activity of the Chicano Movement, my research considers Chicana/o music of the period as a critical part of the protest music genres of Latin America (eg. Nueva canción, canto nuevo) and the Unites States (eg. labor/union and civil rights songs). Consequently, although situated squarely within the context of the Chicano Movement, this project necessarily examines the musical yet political links between Chicano musicians and their counterparts in the American labor movement, Civil Rights Movement, and Latin American social movements of the period. Coupled with the mobilization of their own Mexican musical and cultural traditions, Chicano musicians engaged these other repertoires of struggle to form the nexus of Chicana/o musical expression during the Movement. By viewing Chicana/o music within this broader lens, my research demonstrates that the complexities of the movimiento and Chicana/o political struggle cannot be adequately understood without thinking about how Chicano cultural producers engage a diversity of other race, ethnic, and regional struggles. Rather than assume a homologous relationship between music and identity, my research historicizes musical practices in the context of their struggle for political, social, and cultural rights and resources and the strategies employed by diverse communities working together to overcome the failures of governmental and institutional programs. The creative dialogues and musical exchanges that occurred among Chicano musicians suggest not only forms of ethnic solidarity but also the culturally “hybrid” expressions that shape even nationalist movements. Key to this approach is recognizing the simultaneously global and local character of Chicana/o musical production, where the flows of transnationalism circulated not only ideas, peoples, and sounds, but also political struggles. This project thus raises a number of critical questions about Chicano Movement music and its political import. Ultimately, I suggest that it was the ability to perform authoritatively within the bi-cultural and increasingly transnational space of the Chicano experience that empowered movimiento music to express the feelings of autonomy engendered by the Movement. / text

“Hereticks for believing the Antipodes”: Scottish colonial identities in the Darien, 1698-1700Chassé, Patrick 11 September 2007 (has links)
New Caledonia (1698-1700) was Scotland’s largest independent colonial venture. The scheme’s collapse crippled the country financially and was an important factor in the Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707. This project explores the identity of Scottish settlers who attempted to colonize the Darien region of modern Panama. Colonial identity is assessed by reconstructing the Scottish dialogue about the natural world, the aboriginal population, and the commonwealth. I contend that the ideology of improvement that shaped Scottish perceptions of utility and fertility in the Darien became a powerful moral discourse used to critique the colonists. This paper also chronicles Scottish aspirations to found an empire of trade and civility, uncovering the fundamental problems created by the idealization of the Tule as eager subjects of this new empire. Finally, I argue that Caledonia’s food shortages not only threatened the colonial government’s legitimacy, they also exposed divergent ideals of the commonwealth among the settlers.

Previous issue date: 2012 / Resumo: Investiga-se de que maneira o caso de don Carlos Ometochtzin, cacique de Texcoco (Proceso Inquisitorial del Cacique de Tetzcoco 1539), se relacionou com os primeiros anos de conquista espanhola no Vale do México. O objetivo é olhar para os recortes suscitados pela leitura do processo, pois isso auxilia tanto a inteligibilidade do processo quanto o desvio do olhar em sentidos que apenas a fonte em particular pode fornecer. Do mesmo modo, está posta a tentativa de entender o processo enquanto acontecimento, já que se pergunta sobre o processo segundo suas regras de fabricação dentro da instituição inquisitorial, evocando suas conexões institucionais de forma mais direta. Para tanto, interroga-se como operaram os primeiros juízos inquisitoriais estabelecidos na Nova Espanha no período anterior ao ano de 1571 - data oficial do estabelecimento do Tribunal do Santo Ofício na Nova Espanha, mais especificamente no período de nomeação do primeiro arcebispo do México e inquisidor episcopal Juan de Zumárraga. Observa-se ainda, por meio do Processo Inquisitorial do cacique de Texcoco e demais fontes de pesquisa, aspectos do comportamento da antiga elite indígena do vale do México frente à imposição do cristianismo e à dominação política espanhola / Abstract: It investigates how the case of don Carlos Ometochtzin, cacique of Texcoco (Proceso Inquisitorial del Cacique de Tetzcoco 1539), was related to the early years of Spanish conquest in the Valley of Mexico. The goal is to look at the clippings raised by the reading process, establishing a two-way dialogue, because this can help the intelligibility of the process and averts the eyes in ways that only a particular source can provide. As the same manner, this work understands the process as an event, since it wonders about the process according to its manufacturing rules inside the inquisitorial institution, evoking its institutional connections more directly. For this, it asks how to operated the first inquisitorial courts established in New Spain in the period preceding the year of 1571 - official date of establishment of the Court of the Inquisition in New Spain, more specifically in the period of appointment of first archbishop of Mexico and inquisitor bishop Juan de Zumárraga. It can shows also, through the inquisitorial process of the chief of Texcoco and other research sources, aspects of the behavior of ancient indigenous elite of the valley of Mexico against the imposition of Christianity and political domination of Spain / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

Previous issue date: 2012 / Resumo: O presente texto de dissertação analisa os limites do Real Maravilhoso como conceito e discurso estético-político de representação da América Latina. A intenção é buscar nos debates entre os principais expoentes da chamada nova narrativa hispano-americana reflexões sobre a identidade do continente. Essa literatura iniciada nos anos de 1950 e continuada nas décadas seguintes é responsável por fomentar uma ideia de unidade latino-americana, criando um pastiche sobre aquilo que seria a América. Como salienta grande parte dos estudiosos do tema, a narrativa desse período, de maneira consciente, tentou realizar a busca de um centro do espaço americano e começou propensa a dar uma versão típica da nossa realidade: a América como espaço do maravilhoso. Divergindo dessa representação, na década de 1990 tem início o movimento McOndo, criado pelos escritores chilenos Alberto Fuguet e Sergio Gómez, para definir uma geração de novos escritores latino-americanos cuja principal característica era rechaçar o aspecto mágico que passou a ser o ?selo? dos autores do Real Maravilhoso. Analisar os limites e as implicações políticas desses discursos, assim como as formas através das quais os intelectuais da década de 1960 e 1990 representaram a América Latina, é o principal objetivo do trabalho / Abstract: This dissertation explores the limits of the Real Maravilhoso as a concept and an esthetic-political speech of Latin America representation. The purpose of it is looking for reflections about the continent identity through discussions among the main exponents of the new Spanish American narrative. This literature that was introduced in the 1950s and has been proceeded in the following decades is responsible for promoting a concept of Latin-America unity, creating a common sense of what would be America. As emphasized by many literary critics and historians, the narrative of this period, in a conscious way, tried to achieve the search of a center of an American space and began tending to give a typical version of our reality: America as a place of wonder. Diverging from this representation, in the 1990s the movement McOndo has begun, created by chilean writers Alberto Fuguet and Sergio Gómez, to define a generation of new Latin American writers whose main feature was to reject the magical aspect that became the "seal" of the Real Maravilhoso's authors.
