Chromatic Evolution of the Pre-Recapitulatory Harmony in Felix Mendelssohn's Songs without Words

Abdalla Abarca, Faez Ismael, Abdalla Abarca, Faez Ismael January 2016 (has links)
In Darwinian evolution, a living population evolves when it is exposed to the selection pressures of a new biological medium. Analogously, in my chromatic evolution a chord "evolves" when it is exposed to a new chromatic medium, forcing it to adapt and harmonically modify its pitch content. This is a process by which a diatonic, consonant chord is progressively transformed into a chromatic substitute, over a span of several similar works, without losing or modifying the chord’s resolution tendencies, harmonic function, or formal location. From a Schenkerian perspective—and using Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words as my corpus study—I will demonstrate how the pre-recapitulatory dominant (the root-position dominant that conventionally precedes the recapitulation) progressively evolves into a highly chromatic substitute: the dominant of the mediant.

Spatial and Temporal Employment Relationships: Southern California as a Case Study

Peterson, Samuel 01 January 2018 (has links)
Southern California is the largest U.S. metropolitan area geographically, and demonstrates complex spatial relationships between county labor markets. This paper is interested in investigating the employment dependencies between the core city of Los Angeles its respective commuting sheds, such as San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Using time series data that includes labor demand shocks from the Great Recession, this analysis implements a vector autoregressive model to dissect the relationship between urban and suburban employment changes. The work finds a strong lagging-leading relationship between counties that varies by business cycle phase, and provides policy implications from this relationship.

Application of hybrid methods to high frequency aeroacoustics / Application des méthodes hybrides à l'aéroacoustique à haute fréquence

Christophe, Julien 14 September 2011 (has links)
This work proposes to address the computation of flow-generated noise, including the high frequency components in an acceptable computational time, relative to industrial applications. In this framework, hybrid methods based on aeroacoustic analogies are relevant to predict the corresponding sound, in term of computational time and easy implementation, and are separating the sources of sound computation from the sound propagation itself. Both parts of the hybrid method are then investigated.<p><p>Firstly, the sources of sound should be computed accurately, reproducing most of the energy content of the turbulent flow. The present study is mainly based on LES computations, that are a good compromise between the accuracy and the time required to obtain the sources, especially for low Mach number application, where incompressible flow computations can be used. The influence of the computational parameters is then studied through the investigation of the influence of the boundary conditions, flow solver, mesh refinement, LES subgrid-scale model and computational domain definition. <p><p>Secondly, the sound sources propagation is computed using classical analogies based most of the time on free field Green's functions. They are limited to the low frequency range of the emitted sound spectrum, where the source is compact, if incompressible acoustic sources are used. They are then proposed to be combined with Amiet's theory for airfoil noise to cover the remaining high frequency part of the sound spectrum. The limitations of Amiet's theory are analysed through the geometrical and acoustical far-field assumptions. Furthermore, an inverse strip method is proposed to extend Amiet's theory to spanwise varying flow conditions and taking correctly into account the spanwise wave number effects. <p><p>The leading-edge noise mechanism is studied through the interaction of the turbulent region of a jet with a NACA0012 airfoil. The hybrid method, consisting in an incompressible LES computation combined with Curle's analogy, showed its limitation to the low frequency range of the sound spectrum when low-order CFD are used. The Amiet's theory, based on the modelisation of the upstream velocity spectrum, provides a good sound prediction at high frequency, as far as the airfoil thickness is accounted for. <p><p>The Trailing-edge noise mechanism is studied through the flow around a mid-span cut of a blade (CD airfoil) of an automotive cooling fan. <p>Three different acoustic methods are used :Curle's analogy is using wall-pressure fluctuations over the airfoil surface, Ffowcs-Williams and Hall's analogy is using volumetric velocity informations around the trailing-edge and Amiet's theory for trailing-edge noise is using the wall-pressure spectrum around the trailing-edge and the corresponding spanwise correlation. The methods using wall-pressure informations are shown to directly transfer the informations of the wall-pressure spectrum to the sound spectrum. Differences are appearing in the higher frequency range where the airfoil starts to be non compact, invalidating the use of Curle's analogy at such frequencies compared to the other methods, taking scattering effects into account implicitly in their formulations. <p><p>Finally, in order to reduce the computational cost, Amiet's theory for trailing-edge noise is proposed to be driven from steady RANS computations. Two methods to compute the wall-pressure spectrum from boundary-layer informations are studied. Their respective robustness and reliability are analysed in an uncertainty quantification framework, in case of varying velocity profiles upstream the airfoil. Both models showed similar results and tendency compared to the wall-pressure LES spectrum, as far as the flow topology remains similar. / Doctorat en Sciences de l'ingénieur / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Leading Multicultural Teams. Case Study of XYZ. / Leading Multicultural Teams. Case Study of XYZ.

Zemanová, Daniela January 2015 (has links)
The main objective of the thesis is to analyze the topic of leading multicultural teams, with a specific attention to the particular example of the company XYZ; and answer the research questions with the gathered data and construct recommendations. The theoretical part provides a comprehensive overview of the concepts of multinational corporations, teams, multicultural teams and leadership. The assumptions derived from the theory serve as a base for the following empirical part, where the theoretical research is completed with a qualitative study. The qualitative study was conducted in cooperation with the company XYZ and professionals working directly in the multicultural teams were interviewed. By combining the findings from both theoretical and empirical part, many of the assumed benefits, especially the increased creativity, of the multicultural teams were confirmed. However, the negative aspects were identified as well, with the more difficult communication above all.

Předstihový kompozitní index a jeho role při analýze hospodářského cyklu v České republice během let 1993-2015 / Composite leading index and its role in the analysis of the business cycle in the Czech republic between 1993-2015

Hornová, Michaela January 2015 (has links)
The main topic of my thesis is the problem of monitoring business cycles. Composite leading indicators are one of the options, how to make this monitoring. In my thesis I am going inside of the process of construction of composite leading indicator. I am comparing the methods of OECD, Eurostat and Conference Board. Special attention is dedicated to the methods of czech institutions as well. These methods are still being evolved and improved, which makes the analysis more difficult. Together with all the information about business cycle and economic policy in Czech republic between 1993-2015. I am judgeing the functionality of leading indicators for the monitoring of business cycle. Method of my analysis is SWOT analysis so the result of this thesis is mentioning of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threaths of the making and application of composite leading indicators.

Using Efficient Market Theory and Behavioral Finance Theory to Investigate the Impact of Investor Confidence: Lessons from Global Financial Crises

Mungai, Ruguru January 2019 (has links)
Magister Commercii - MCom / The drastic decline in stock prices on the 24th October 1929 sent a frantic wave of panic across the US. Merely a century later, on the 29th September 2008 another financial crisis hit the globe - this time leaving most countries devastated. The main objective of this study is twofold: 1) to determine whether leading indicators have sufficient predictive capacity to predict global financial crises; and 2) to use the Efficient Market Theory (EMT) and/ or Behavioural Finance Theory (BFT) as a means of developing a theory explaining the potential impact bad public announcements had on the level of investor confidence before the 1929 Great Depression and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. This study was not only designed to qualitatively conceptualise the notion of the term “investor confidence” whilst drawing special attention to its frailty using the 1929 Great Depression and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, but also assist governments, reserve banks and key institutions to develop effective strategies of mitigating the effects of the latter financial crisis as well as provide guidance on how another financial crisis can be prevented. This study extracted bad public announcements from 40 books and 60 journal articles using 6 NBER-based leading economic indicators (LEI) and 4 systematic risk-based leading non-economic indicators (LNEI) in order to: 1) qualitatively assess the extent to which leading indicators can be used to predict global financial crises 3 – 8 months in advance; and 2) use the EMT and/ or BFT to provide an explanation concerning the potential impact that bad public announcements had on the level of investor confidence before the 1929 Great Depression and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis.

Att leda hälsofrämjande på distans : Utmaningar och möjligheter ur ett ledarskapsperspektiv / Leading Health Promotion Remotely : Challenges and possibilities from a leadership perspective

Owens, Anna, Lindqvist Weddig, Märta January 2021 (has links)
In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic forced significant changes to work life. One of the most crucial changes was the increasing number of workers who started to work remotely. This created a new basis for both employees and leaders, not least when it came to efforts aimed at promoting health. This study has therefore examined the opportunities and challenges faced by leaders responsible for efforts promoting remote-based health in personnel. Research showing leaders' experience in this matter is sparse, thus the aim of this study is to bring new knowledge to this field. Three different aspects have been focused on regarding health-promoting leadership: organizing health promoting activities; supportive leadership; and creating a health-promoting workplace. Transcripts from eight semi-structured interviews have been coded and thematic analyzed using theories of health-promoting leadership and challenges and possibilities arising when working remotely. The study has several key findings. One challenge has been to find new forms of health-promoting activities. A further finding revealed that the communication with the employees has changed, and it has therefore been more difficult for the leaders “to sense” the wellbeing of their employees. Furthermore, the results showed that working remotely challenged the leaders’ needs for more relationship-oriented health-promoting leadership and leaders experienced they spent more time and effort on emotional interventions. Another finding was that the workers' ability to self-leadership has been given increased meaning. Hence leadership has been challenged to become more individualized and supportive to self-leadership to encourage employees’ participation in health-promoting work. More and better communication, transparent and clear routines of the working structure and incorporated organizational culture have all helped the leaders to continue their health-promoting leadership when working remotely. Most of the leaders also experienced that working remotely has enabled, rather than challenged, health-promoting leadership regarding the creation of work/private life balance. In a broader perspective the conclusions of this study have been that leaders need creativity to preserve and find new forms of health-promoting activities suitable for remote work. Leaders also need the ability to inspire and motivate the workers to have a sense of individual responsibility for taking part in and creating a health-promoting work-place. The study also shows leading workers remotely demands more emotional capacity which is an important indication for recruiters of future health promotion leaders.

Perceiving resistance to strategic organizational change : A barrier to success or an opportunity for improved decision-making?

Karlsson, Mathias, Westermark, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
Background: To keep up with competitors and the ever-changing business environment, organizations constantly adapt and adjust their strategies. Strategic organizational change is the implementation of change to increase corporate performance and find new competitive advantages. Studies are showing how the majority of change processes fail. This high failure rate is dependent on several different factors. However, one factor which seems to be one of the most common is resistance to strategic organizational change. Resistance is often looked through a negative lens by the management, which can negatively affect the whole change process. Purpose: The primary purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge about resistance to strategic organizational change and explore the field of change management to yield valuable insights to managers' quest to implement change successfully. Research Question: How can understanding the source of resistance be used beneficially by management to improve the managerial decision-making and, therefore, increase the success rate of change implementation? Methodology: A qualitative research method with semi-structured interviews has been adopted. Conclusion: If resistance is not only seen as an obstacle but instead analysed thoroughly by the management it could contribute to an organizational discussion which potentially could improve the quality of the management decision-making and, thus, improve the success rate of strategic organizational change implementation.v
