An Evaluation of the Effect of Learning Styles and Computer Competency on Students' Satisfaction on Web-Based Distance Learning Environments

Du, Yunfei 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the correlation between students' learning styles, computer competency and student satisfaction in Web-based distance learning. Three hundred and one graduate students participated in the current study during the Summer and Fall semesters of 2002 at the University of North Texas. Participants took the courses 100% online and came to the campus only once for software training. Computer competency and student satisfaction were measured using the Computer Skill and Use Assessment and the Student Satisfaction Survey questionnaires. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory measured students' learning styles. The study concludes that there is a significant difference among the different learning styles with respect to student satisfaction level when the subjects differ with regard to computer competency. For accommodating amd diverging styles, a higher level of computer competency results in a higher level of student satisfaction. But for converging and assimilating styles, a higher level of computer competency suggests a lower level of student satisfaction. A significant correlation was found between computer competency and student satisfaction level within Web-based courses for accommodating styles and no significant results were found in the other learning styles.

Lizano Barrantes, Catalina, Arias Mora, Freddy, Cordero García, Eugenia, Ortiz Ureña, Angie 12 1900 (has links)
Learning styles can be defined as the set of features that characterize the way people learn and process information. The aim of this study is to establish the relationship between learning styles and academic performance of students who completed the fifth year of the Pharmacy Program at Universidad de Costa Rica during the years 2011 to 2013. We applied the Honey-Alonso Learning Styles questionnaire. Regarding the overall mean, we obtained that there are no differences in the preference for an active, reflective, theoretical or pragmatic style. Students don’t have a pure learning style, but a combination of two or more of them, which favours the learning process as they have more tools to adapt to the teachers’, the courses’ and the study program’s requirements.

A Study of the Relationship Between Selected Learning Styles and Achievement of Kindergarten Language Arts Objectives in a Local School District

Harp, Billie F. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between the learning style of a kindergarten child and the level of achievement in language arts. The study was done at the request of the school district of a small community in north Texas, and it incorporated the total public school kindergarten population, 110 subjects. Instruments were the Learning Style Inventory: Primary by Perrin, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, and an achievement test developed by the regional education service center. The LSI:P was administered to all students by one person while the two achievement tests were administered by individual teachers to their own classes. The children were divided into groups according to their rating on the LSI:P, using the Prescription Circle by Dunn and Dunn as modifier. ANOVA and chi square analysis were utilized to compute frequencies and percentages at the .05 level to determine relationships between learning styles' group membership and attainment in language. A definite relationship was found between a child's learning style and achievement on the language arts objectives. Indications were that the elements of motivation, persistence and responsibility, and perceptual mode preferred by the learner had strong relationship to success in achievement. It was concluded that a relationship exists between the ability to conduct successful word analysis and a child's learning style. It was also determined that children of kindergarten age can self-report learning style as measured by the Learning Style Inventory: Primary. It is recommended that longitudinal studies be conducted to discover if learning styles change with maturity. Other studies could be done on subgroups of the kindergarten population to find what impact preschool experiences, English as a second language, or sex of the child may have on the relationship between a child's learning style and achievement in language arts.

Art - A Tool For Teaching English To ESL Level I Students

Duvall, Allison G. 01 January 2006 (has links)
Today's classrooms are filled with an ethnically and linguistically diverse population of students. In order for Limited English Proficient (LEP) high school students to be academically successful and meet the goals of No Child Left Behind 2001, they must learn academic English. As an art teacher, I understand the importance of art in a student's general education. However, could a high school art class, also, act as a tool for teaching LEP students the English language? My goal, through the use of action research, is to find an effective way to set up an English as a Second Language (ESL) Level 1 art class, thus, giving students the benefits of art while furthering their English language development.

The Learning Styles and Approaches of Students Studying the Fundamental Algorithmic Concepts course at the University of the Witwatersrand

Wedderburn, Linda Anne 16 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 8109673 - MSc research report - School of Science Education - Faculty of Science / Many students fail the Fundamental Algorithmic Concepts course, in first year Computer Science at the University of the Witwatersrand. To obtain an understanding of why this occurs, the learning styles and learning approaches of the students studying the course and the relationship of these concepts with student grades were researched. A predominately qualitative paradigm was used, supplemented with quantitative data. Two research designs were selected: a survey to get a broad overview of the sample and an ethnographic design to provide an in-depth description of a small group. Existing instruments were used for the survey, namely Felder and Soloman’s Index of Learning Styles and a learning approach diagnostic test that was constructed in South Africa. An interview with open-ended questions was used for the ethnographic research. Contrary to expectations, the results of the study indicated that the adoption of a deep learning approach did not imply success. The findings suggest that a strategic learning approach may be required to achieve good grades. In contrast to other studies, over 65% of the sample population were black students. It was found that black students tend to adopt a deeper learning approach than the rest of the students. From a learning style perspective there was some new evidence to indicate that the more intuitive or global a student was, the deeper the approach the student adopted to learning. A large percentage (over 80%) of the population were visual learners and an unusually high percentage (over 60%) were reflective learners. The lecturer should match the workload and assessment methods with the desired learning approach of the students. The lecturer should also encourage the students to adopt a strategic learning approach where appropriate. In addition, the lecturer should pay particular attention to incorporating teaching styles that accommodate students with visual and active learning style preferences.

Estratégia de ensino em curso técnico a partir dos estilos de aprendizagem de Felder-Soloman / Teaching strategy in technical courses based on the learning styles of Felder-Soloman

Catholico, Roberval Aparecido Rodrigues 27 August 2009 (has links)
The teaching learning process has been concerning researchers and specialists over searching for alternative strategies as well as over unraveling the mechanisms and teaching practices that result on the success or the so called scholar failure. The students learning styles are studied as a variable involved in the knowledge construction. Thus, the core of this research is to propose an approach of teaching and learning strategies implementation. This approach will be used in electrical-electronic technical course lessons in order to make the learning process simpler for the students. This strategy will consider the learning styles of the students so that the lessons will be prepared after analyzing how the students learn more easily. The learning styles chosen were those available in the questionnaires developed by Felder and Soloman (ILS), which are online on the website of Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos - Universidade de São Paulo (EESC/USP). So, the teachers will be trained to deal with the different styles, they will also have the analysis of how their students understand, retain, process and organize the information received, ie the learning styles of each one of them, disposed in their classroom control. The students, on the other hand, will be trained to learn to improve their scholar results by using their own learning strategies in a more appropriate way. In order to conclude this study, it was necessary to watch some lessons, and after that, it was possible to notice that the teachers use teaching strategies according to the school procedures and they do not tend to repeat their own learning styles while teaching. It was also noticed that when a student has some difficulties in understanding the subject of the lesson, the teacher explains that in the same way he had done before, without considering the student learning style. The incompatibility between the students styles and the ways of teaching is reduced due to the fact that this specific school has teaching dynamics that flow among the different styles with no problem, as the lessons are divided into theoretical and practical. Therefore, with this study, the benefits of knowing the learning styles for the teaching practice are reassured, as initially expected, mainly when they are related to the development of teaching methods and the qualification of teacher actions.

Diniz, Danielle Dornellas 16 October 2007 (has links)
People have different preferences in learning, that reflect in their several professional and academic characteristics. Long ago it is looking for an answer to the question: \"why, in the same conditions of environment and education form, two students of same intellectual level, have different learning levels?\". Part of the reply can be found in the learning styles, the different ways for which people perceive and process the informations. Understanding the different learning styles is an important step to favor the individuality, to make good use of the abilities and also identify the ways less preferred to learn. This self-knowledge is fundamental when we are dealing with the long-distance education, which request that the own students organize themselves and optimize their own learning. From the moment when they know their preferences, the students have the possibility to direct their learning in this direction. On the other hand, the teacher also has subsidies to plan activities and to arrange resources for a bigger variety of students, thus diminishing the desistance rate and keeping the motivation, a time that this one is also deeply connected to the level of communication and interaction in the virtual room. Thus, the objective of this project is to map the learning styles of the students registered in a computer science course in long-distance education, and to analyze the influence in these students\' interaction in the forum. For the collection of the learning styles of the 36 students, it had been used the tools developed by Felder and Soloman (1991) and the Keirsey and Bates\' (1984), both translated into portuguese. The results identify a distribution of the learning styles well characterized for students of a long-distance bachelor course in Computer Science. Moreover, the connections between these learning styles and the interaction in the virtual room in the forum tool show that the active students (FELDER; SOLOMAN, 1991) were who had the levels of bigger interaction and, in contrast, the thinkers students (KEIRSEY; BATES, 1984) were among the ones that had less participated in the debates. It was also verified a predominance of active individuals between who had answered to the topics objectively (interaction criterion C1), as well as a trend of individuals of this dimension relate more the argued subjects (interaction criterion C2). This way, the results confirm that the way as the students interact in the forum has a relation with their learning styles, which can assist in the proposal activities that motivate and develop the participation in the tools of the virtual classroom.

A holistic analysis of the profile of teachers and educational strategies for teaching and relationships: an application in teaching of engineering production

Cury, Antonio Carlos Hilsdorf 10 December 2008 (has links)
Relying on theoretical propositions and thinkers of classical education and the three main approaches to education which are: theory inactive, theory and interactionist theory cognitive and in the construct of the learning styles of humanities, the study aims to: determine the profile teaching of teachers of the engineering disciplines of the course of production the FEI, Sao Paulo, through a roadmap balizado in theoretical education, following the three approaches to teaching. This road map constructed by the author, served as a basis to see what line of theoretical thinking is adopted by teachers, check this place during the conduct of lessons in the classroom or laboratories. It complements it was checking through a questionnaire distributed to students, also built by the author, and based on a model of institutional assessment developed by the Faculty of Education at UNICAMP, Brazil. The purpose of this questionnaire is to raise the perception of the student as one representative sample, about the training of teachers in the classroom. Compared with the educational profile obtained from each teacher with their style of learning, provided by the inventory of Kolb (Learning Style Inventory-LSI). The results of students\' perceptions about the teachers surveyed have a complementary character so that the teaching-learning process can be understood in a systemic way. It was obtained the educational profile and the styles of each of the teachers surveyed, 20 of the universe, and even an assessment with a representative sample of 278 students surveyed in a universe of 906 students on the course in Production Engineering from the FEI, Sao Paulo. It is hoped that through this study there is an awareness of teachers surveyed for an institutional commitment to the proposition that leads to improvements in the classroom and curriculum changes possible through pre-established criteria.

O impacto dos estilos de aprendizagem no ensino de contabilidade na FEA-RP/USP / The impact of Learning Styles in Accounting Education at FEARP/ USP

Silva, Denise Mendes da 18 December 2006 (has links)
This study has as main objective to evaluate the impact of student, teacher and class learning styles in under graduate academic performance in the Accounting course of the School of Economics, Business and Accounting of Ribeirão Preto ? University of São Paulo (FEARP/ USP). For identification of learning styles it was used the Felder-Soloman?s Index of Learning Styles (ILS), on-line questionnaire, accessible on the electronic page of the School of Engineering of São Carlos University of São Paulo (EESC/USP). It has participated of the research, 194 students of the FEA-RP Accounting course, which corresponds to 82% of the active students of the course, and 29 teachers who, beyond the ILS, had answered one another questionnaire, elaborated by researchers, on the basis of the Felder-Silverman?s Model, for identification of the styles of course?s 40 classes. The student?s academic performance was measured for the final grades gotten by them, before the reevaluations, criterion chosen, in terms of methodological precision, as a form to have the research direct and objective. The results show that the student?s dominant styles are: active, sensorial, visual and sequential. Most of teachers is reflective, intuitive, visual and sequential and most of classes is reflective, sensorial, verbal and sequential. The impact of the different learning styles of these elements in the student?s academic performance, such as individually and combined, disclosing was evidenced, for some dimensions, significantly better grades.
