Pre-service teacher training in two Open and Distance Learning based universities in Africa

Olaniran, Sunday Olawale January 2017 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor Of Education (D.Ed.) in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies at the University Of Zululand, 2018 / The study examined pre-service teacher training in Open and Distance Learning based Universities in South Africa and Nigeria. The specific focus of the study was on the initial teacher education programmes at Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE/PGDE) phases in the two ODL based universities. The theories of self determination, humanism, transformational learning, distributed learning, and transactional distance served as the frameworks for the study. Information for the study was gathered through survey. Anonymous web-based questionnaire was designed and used to obtain information from the pre-service teacher trainees in the two ODL based universities. Interviews were conducted for a selected number of academic and support staff members from the two universities. A combination of purposive and stratified random sampling was used to generate the sample frames of the participants for the study. The sample of the pre-service teacher trainees that participated in the study was drawn from the nine (9) Provinces of South Africa, and six (6) Geo-political zones of Nigeria. One thousand, two hundred and sixteen (1216) ODL based pre-service teacher trainees in their B.Ed. and PGCE/PGDE programmes responded to the web-based questionnaire from the two countries. In addition, a total of ten (10) academic and support staff members were interviewed from the two Universities. The overall results revealed that the majority of pre-service teacher trainees by distance are young people between 18 and 29 years of age, unemployed or engaged in voluntary works with no stable source of income. Furthermore, flexibility of the programme and desire to work full time while studying were found to be the major factors that motivated majority of the participants to enrol in pre-service teacher training by distance. Electronic mail (E-mail), postal services, Learning Management Systems (LMS), radio programmes, and social media were found to be the major platforms through which the selected ODL based universities reached their pre-service teacher trainees. Moreover, mobile phone and tablet were found to be the major devices that the sampled student teachers used to access learning materials.

The discussions were based on a focus group composed of teachers who experienced/lived a pedagogical experience of insternship teacher with six cursistas/teachers and one tutor teacher/ trainer gathered on a Facebook group named confabulating knowledge about the experience as a internship teacher insternship. The concepts that guided the seizure the voices these confabuladores were guided by the circumstances of conflict and confrontation, resultant of educational process experienced. The investigation had the methodological routes the ethnography and case study, through the reflections of confabuladores ordenance by written and pictorial provocations. For the contextualization of this experiment were made analysis of file available on digital Environment for Teaching and Learning (ADEA in portuguese) by UFMA, and specific bibliography of visual arts education, distance education, stage regence supervised and visual culture studies. Data analysis indicates that the internship experience in the training process in the course of degree in visual arts distance mode reveals perceptions of the two duo conditions already are teachers and the confrontation of the condition of being students, the difficulties of the structure of public schools inside of state for the visual arts education, the desire for expansion of internship possibilities of estagiarem in other formats, the need for continuous congoing negotiations, etc. I understood that such studies promote a necessary immersion in the experience of training courses of visual art teachers in this modality contributing to a critical understanding of such training from the voice of its practitioners.

Mobile Learning Effectiveness in Higher Education

Yaqub, Naveed, Iqbal, Atif January 2010 (has links)

This research investigates mobile learning effectiveness in higher education. Mobile learning is composition of two words Mobile and Learning. In simple words mobile learning is mobility of learners by using mobile technologies in learning environment. Many researches addressed mobile learning but few of them covered mobile learning effectiveness. This study explores mobile learning effectiveness with the help of learning theories and models. Behaviorist, cognitive, humanistic, situational, and mobile learning theories are discussed that elaborate social, psychological, and philosophical aspects of learning. Detailed evolution of learning is also part of this report that covers the literature of distance learning, electronic learning as well as formal and informal learning. Three effective learning models are taken in consideration: the Garrison’s Community of Inquiry, the Swan’s Interactivity and Online Learning, and the Danaher and his colleagues’ model of mobile learning and teaching evaluation model. Danaher’s model is selected as a conceptual framework of the study that is composed of three elements that are engagement, presence and flexibility. Engagement is the active participation of the learner in learning activities. Presence means being there, physically or mentally, in learning activity or place. Flexibility is how easy and facilitative the system is for teachers and students. These three elements are used to determine mobile learning effectiveness. Survey method was used as our research approach. Empirical data was collected from Linnaeus University (prev. Växjö University) Sweden, by using two separate questionnaires for students and teachers. Collected data was analyzed with respect to learning theories and the theoretical model. The result reveals the potential of mobile learning as an effective mode of learning in terms of engagement and presence but flexibilty approved to be weaker in mobile learning.

E-quipped to serve : delivering holistic Christian mission training through e-learning

Wiseman, L. Kate January 2015 (has links)
Developments in Information and Communication Technologies are rapidly breaking down the barriers of time and place that may have previously limited learning to those able to access campus-based programmes. Distance learning, or e-learning, offers exciting opportunities to cross cultural borders and open up the world of education in ways inconceivable even a few years ago. This study considered how e-learning can be used to effectively deliver training to those involved in Christian mission work. Holistic mission training aims to equip the whole person head, heart and hands for Christian service, especially in cross-cultural contexts. Particularly in the Western world, this training has traditionally taken place within face-to-face learning communities, with e-learning s place as a delivery mode being a matter for debate. The research set out to identify and define the key criteria required for the effective delivery of holistic mission training through e-learning and conceptualise those criteria within a framework. A multimethod research design was adopted combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. A systematic literature review was carried out to identify and define the key criteria for effective mission training and effective e-learning and the main challenges in delivering mission training through e-learning, along with potential solutions. Further criteria were found through action research to develop and evaluate a programme of holistic mission training delivered through e-learning. The study contributes to knowledge by identifying for the first time the elements, factors and conditions that can enable holistic mission training to be delivered effectively through e-learning and setting them within a framework to facilitate the development and evaluation of e-learning programmes. The findings highlight principles applicable to different learning situations, cultures and technologies and are largely transferable to other disciplines.

Fredriksson, Charlie January 2021 (has links)
Background/objective: Many studies report positivelearning results for e-learning for skill development in anumber of different settings, whereas one of these settings isin the work with mental health. However, mental healthissues are a globally increasing problem, not least in Sweden, and the need for effective and easily accessible skilldevelopment alternatives is therefore very high. This studytherefore aims to examine and deliver an insight into theuser experience of e-learning for skill development forpsychologists and psychotherapists.Method: A qualitative approach has been adopted wheresemi structured interviews with three psychologists and onepsychotherapist make up the empirical material. Theempirical material is analyzed through a developed modelbased on previous literature in the field.Results/analysis: The user experience for e-learning for skilldevelopment is generally positive. E-learning is perceived aseasily accessible, globalizing and the environmentallyfriendly option for skill development. Limitations are in theform of lacking learning dynamics, pedagogy and quality incomparison to traditional learning. E-learning, however, makes for a very good complement to traditional learning. Conclusions: E-learning is a valued learning method and isperceived to facilitate and help psychologists andpsychotherapists in their professions. However, successfactors such as cost-effectiveness, availability, interactivity, environmentally friendly and facilitating doesn’t compensatefor limitations in the form of lacking learning dynamics. Therefore, e-learning is best used as a complement totraditional learning rather than an independent learningmethod.
