Analysis of Dependently Truncated Sample Using Inverse Probability Weighted Estimator

Liu, Yang 01 August 2011 (has links)
Many statistical methods for truncated data rely on the assumption that the failure and truncation time are independent, which can be unrealistic in applications. The study cohorts obtained from bone marrow transplant (BMT) registry data are commonly recognized as truncated samples, the time-to-failure is truncated by the transplant time. There are clinical evidences that a longer transplant waiting time is a worse prognosis of survivorship. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume the dependence between transplant and failure time. To better analyze BMT registry data, we utilize a Cox analysis in which the transplant time is both a truncation variable and a predictor of the time-to-failure. An inverse-probability-weighted (IPW) estimator is proposed to estimate the distribution of transplant time. Usefulness of the IPW approach is demonstrated through a simulation study and a real application.

Vyresniųjų klasių kairiarankių psichoemocinės būklės vertinimas: akademinių gebėjimų kontekste / The psychoemotional state of the senior left-handers and its estimation in the contex of the academic abilities

Vyšniauskaitė, Aušra 26 September 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Although currently left – handedness is being more tolerated than several decades ago (students are allowed to write with the hand they feel they are better at in schools), the left – handedness us still treated as an unusual phenomenon due to the stereotipe attitude which is well – essablished un our society. The conclusion of scientists about the abilities of the left – handed is contradictory: some of them claim that the left – handed are more gifted and more creative individuals, the other on the contrary say that the avarge of intelligence quotient of the left – handed is lower than the intelligence quotient of the right – handed. The cognition of the left – handed individuality based on thorough investigation can help to find nonviolent pedagogical ways in order to help the left – handed to adapt in the surroundings which are ajusted for the right – handed and to allow them to develop their abilities and talents. The object of investigation is the attitude of the educators towards the academic abilities of the senior pupils who are left – handed and the link of their psychoemotional statei n the process of education. The aim of the investigation is to establish the assessment of the senior left – handed psychoemotional statei n the context of the academic abilities. The work hypothesizes two things: 1) It is presumable that the left – handed are more introvert than the right – handed. 2) The left – handed are more sensitive than the right – handed. 3) It is presumable... Intersection Performance and the New Zealand Left Turn Rule

Wilkins, Anna Jane January 2008 (has links)
This thesis reports the use of Paramics microscopic simulation software to model the differences between the performance of ten Christchurch intersections under the existing New Zealand road rule which requires left turning vehicles to give way to vehicles turning right into the same road, and a changed rule that would see the right turning vehicle have priority. Previous research concerning this issue is reviewed and the history of the existing road rule and recent moves to change it are discussed. At each of the ten intersections a range of traffic volume combinations was assessed and the journey times and queue lengths were compared. The ten intersections represent a range of different layouts and forms of control including give way signs, stop signs and traffic signals. The impact of a rule change on the use of shared lanes at intersections using a Paramics model of the Christchurch Central Business District, as developed for the Christchurch City Council, is also reported. Conclusions are drawn about which types of intersections and traffic volume combinations are likely to be affected by a rule change. The features of intersections that contribute to this susceptibility are identified and conclusions drawn about whether positive or negative effects are likely. It is concluded that there is no compelling intersection performance reason why the rule could not be changed. The successful implication of such change would require a review of the road network to identify critical intersections. Some monitoring and mitigation measures may also be required.

Left ventricular thrombus and stroke after acute myocardial infarction

Mooe, Thomas January 1997 (has links)
A left ventricular thrombus develops in approximately 40% of patients following an anterior myocardial infarction. Embolization from these thrombi has been regarded as the most important cause of stroke following a myocardial infarction. The occurrence and characteristics of left ventricular thrombi and stroke after anterior myocardial infarction may, however, have changed after the introduction of aspirin and thrombolytics as standard therapy. The occurrence of left ventricular thrombi was examined in 99 patients with an acute anterior myocardial infarction, 74 of whom were treated with streptokinase. Thrombi were equally common in the thrombolysis group (46%, 95% confidence interval [Cl], 35-57%) as in the non-thrombolysis group (40%, 95% Cl, 21-59%). The risk of thrombus formation was related to the degree of left ventricular segmental dysfunction. Using serial echocardiographic examinations, the formation and resolution of thrombi was found to be highly dynamic. The majority of thrombi diagnosed during the hospital stay had resolved at follow-up one month later, irrespective of treatment with streptokinase or anticoagulants. The development of new thrombi was, however, observed at every follow-up examination interval. One-hundred-and-twenty-four patients suffering a stroke within 28 days of an acute myocardial infarction were identified in the northern Sweden MONICA stroke registry between 1985 and 1994. The overall event rate of ischemic myocardial infarction-related stroke was 1.07%. The risk of a stroke was highest duringt he first 5 days after the infarction. Only approximately half the strokes were preceded by an anterior myocardial infarction. In a case-control analysis, atrial fibrillation (chronic or new onset), ST elevation and a history of a previous stroke were found to be independent predictors of stroke. There was a long-term trend towards a lower incidence and event rate for myocardial infarction-related stroke. Clinical stroke characteristics were examined in 103 patients with a first-ever stroke within 28 days of a myocardial infarction and compared with stroke characteristics in 206 control subjects without a recent myocardial infarction. The sudden onset of neurological symptoms, an impairment of consciousness, a progression in neurological deficits and a stroke of the total anterior circulation infarction subclass were more common in cases than in controls. The risk of a recurrent stroke during one year of follow-up was not influenced by a recent myocardial infarction, but patients who had suffered a myocardial infarction had markedly higher mortality. To conclude, thrombolytic treatment does not reduce the occurrence of left ventricular thrombi after a myocardial infarction. The risk of thrombus formation is related to the extent of the myocardial injury. The development and resolution of thrombi is a highly dynamic process. There is a long-term trend towards a lower incidence and event rate of ischemic stroke after a myocardial infarction. Although the clinical stroke characteristics differ, they are not specific enough to differentiate between patients with and without a recent myocardial infarction. /
S. 1-84: sammanfattning, s. 85-136: 5 uppsatser
/ digitalisering@umu

Right-wing authoritarianism and prejudice : a meta-analysis / Right wing authoritarianism and prejudice

Childs, Christopher E. 06 August 2011 (has links)
This study is a meta-analysis of publications of the relationship of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) to racial/ethnic prejudice. In addition to examining the relationship between RWA and prejudice, two control/comparison analyses were conducted. The first looks at the relationship between RWA and attitudes toward homosexuality over the same time period as the racial prejudice analysis. An additional set of control analyses involved social dominance orientation (SDO). The hypothesis was that the relationship between RWA and racial/ethnic prejudice has decreased over time but that the relationships between RWA and anti-gay prejudice and the relationship between SDO and racial/ethnic prejudice and SDO and anti-gay prejudice will be relatively stable over time. The results showed as time passed there was a negative relationship between RWA and racial/ethnic prejudice, a positive relationship with RWA and anti-gay prejudice, a non significant correlation with SDO and racial/ethnic prejudice, and a negative relationship between SDO and anti-gay prejudice. / Department of Psychological Science

The evolution of radical rhetoric : radical Baby Boomer discourse on Facebook in the 21st century

Faunce, Edwin E. 23 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines how Baby Boomers utilize Facebook to promote radical political ideology. A convenience sample of 51 Baby Boomer Facebook profiles were selected and critically analyzed for radical content using Bernard L.Brock’s (1965) A Definition of Four Political Positions and a Description of their Rhetorical Characteristics, and Making Sense of Political Ideology: The Language of Democracy (Brock, et al., 2005). The rhetoric from these profiles was then categorized using James W. Chesebro’s (1972) Rhetorical Strategies of the Radical Revolutionary. Conclusions from the research indicate that radical Boomers on Facebook seem to have moved from real world activism to symbolic action on Facebook through the liking and sharing of radical articles and posts. Though consistent in posting radical content in their profiles, radical Boomers using Facebook in this study utilized profiles more to promote radical culture online than to foment political revolution offline. / Department of Telecommunications
