An Investigation of the Importance of the Art of Hand Lettering in the Field of Advertising Art

Greer, Hiram V. 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis concerns the utility of including the art of hand lettering in a curriculum of a university advertising art program. Data secured from 155 questionnaires sent to 266 advertising firms in five states were analyzed by simple descriptive statistics including frequency counts and percentages. Two hypotheses were examined, and it is concluded that hand lettering is still needed in advertising art and should be taught in university art programs.

Therewith, we will comprehend the current function of lettering and typography in the context of advertising language as a key element in the construction of meaning and, therefore, support of the verbvisuality. The word form, by the way, is usually linked to the visual esthetics when, actually, it contributes to meaning construction as much the proper textual content. What is proposed, then, is the perception of the graphic element as a sign transposing Gestalt psychology and therefore carries in its interior a lot of voices that interact with each other and with the socio-historical context. There are many typography fonts or letters design that are part of the history and represent this relationship in its form. The question behind this proposal, in short, is knowing how to see , ie a distinct visual perception. For this, we ll use as a foundation for the considerations in this research authors such as João Gomes Filho, Paulo Heitlinger, Adilson Citelli, Ellen Lupton, Erik Spiekermann, Donis Dondis, Petter Bonnici, Maria Fernanda Lopes Almeida, among others.

Aurich, Jörg 09 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Effects of Tall Man Lettering and Position in Discriminating Confusable Drug Names

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Medical errors are now estimated to be the third leading cause of death in the United States (Makary & Daniel, 2016). Look-alike, sound- alike prescription drug mix-ups contribute to this figure. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) have recommended the use of Tall Man lettering since 2008, in which dissimilar portions of confusable drug names pairs are capitalized in order to make them more distinguishable. Research on the efficacy of Tall Man lettering in differentiating confusable drug name pairs has been inconclusive and it is imperative to investigate potential efficacy further considering the clinical implications (Lambert, Schroeder & Galanter, 2015). The present study aimed to add to the body of research on Tall Man lettering while also investigating another possibility for the mechanism behind Tall Man’s efficacy, if it in fact exists. Studies indicate that the first letter in a word offers an advantage over other positions, resulting in more accurate and faster recognition (Adelman, Marquis & Sabatos-DeVito, 2010; Scaltritti & Balota, 2013). The present study used a 2x3 repeated measures design to analyze the effect of position on Tall Man lettering efficacy. Participants were shown a prime drug, followed by a brief mask, and then either the same drug name or its confusable pair and asked to identify whether they were the same or different. All participants completed both lowercase and Tall Man conditions. Overall performance measured by accuracy and reaction time revealed lowercase to be more effective than Tall Man. With regard to the position of Tall Man letters, a first position advantage was seen both in accuracy and reaction time. A first position advantage was seen in the lowercase condition as well, suggesting the location of the differing portion of the word matters more than the format used. These findings add to the body of inconclusive research on the efficacy of Tall Man lettering in drug name confusion. Considering its impact on patient safety, more research should be conducted to definitively answer the question as to whether or not Tall Man should be used in practice. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Human Systems Engineering 2017

Spontaneous manifestations from the universe of informal design go hand in hand with the production of formal design, and very often become lost within their own ephemerality because either they remain unrecorded or they receive no academic or market recognition. Vernacular lettering and graphics may be included within this universe and are characterized as communication artefacts that figure across the urban landscape of many cities, extending from the city centers out to the suburbs. Developed through the use of manual processes, they are mostly undertaken by anonymous craftsmen, and categorized as typographical urban interference. The main aim of this research has been to study the tradition of vernacular lettering in the state of Pernambuco, analyzing both the formal and practical aspects, as well as an initial investigation into its origins, seeking to trace a profile of the production of these artifacts within this region, emphasizing their typographic aspects. In order to do this, we have mapped out the lettering, together with the originators - the sign painters – across six cities/towns within the state of Pernambuco: Recife, Gravatá, Caruaru, Arcoverde, Salgueiro and Petrolina. Thus, this project proposes a continuation of the master’s research entitled A typographic panorama of vernacular lettering - a case study in Recife, which was an integral part of the research project The Brazilian graphic memory: a comparative analysis of the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Recife (PROCAD/CAPES). Hence, we have broadened the analysis and improved the analytical tools in order to validate the hypotheses and conclusions of previous studies in other territories, as well as gathering fresh information regarding this theme. Throughout the extensive field research, we collected more than 1000 photographic records and interviewed 12 craftsmen. We also visited several book and image collections at the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation, the Ricardo Brennand Institute and the Museum of Recife. On conclusion of our research, the collected data has permitted us: (1) to investigate the presence and characteristics of vernacular lettering within the urban landscape of the state between the end of the 19th century and the 1950s; (2) to validate, within a broader analytical sense, the typographical aspects of vernacular lettering and the classification developed by Finizola in 2010 for vernacular lettering in Recife, and (3) to understand, amongst other items, the craft of lettering in the state of Pernambuco, its inspirations, the learning process and the materials and techniques employed.

Tipografia como elemento arquitetônico no Art Déco paulistano: uma investigação acerca do papel da tipografia como elemento ornamental e comunicativo na arquitetura da cidade de São Paulo entre os anos de 1928 a 1954 / Typography as an architectonic element in the São Paulo´s Art Déco style: an investigation about the role of typography as ornamental and communicative element in the architecture of the city of São Paulo between 1928 and 1954

D\'Elboux, Jose Roberto 28 June 2013 (has links)
The aim of this Master Thesis is to increase the knowledge about the use of typography as an architectural element in the city of São Paulo, specially in Art Déco style buildings, built between 1928 and 1954, demonstrating how architectural typography established a new relation, not only restricted to the building itself, but also with the urban landscape and its inhabitants, keeping up with the developments in commercial trade and in the communications and entertainment industry. A series of analysis was developed, on a significative sample of nominative architectural letterings, through a theoretical basis provided by a comprehensive literature review. As a result, it was possible to ascertain that the Art Déco style, which was higly pervasive in São Paulo city architecture during the time considered, made use of lettering in a very particular way, enabling it, in many occasions, to set an integral relationship with architecture. Also, traces were found indicating that the reproduction of a certain lettering style, present in several buildings in downtown São Paulo, may have been inspired by its use in the Banco de São Paulo building. Other indication, also points to a possible origin of this lettering style as derived from the handscript forms, used in the architectural plans drawn in the office headed by Álvaro Botelho, the architect responsible for the design of the Banco de São Paulo building.
