Hanes Geiriaduraeth yng Nghymru o 1547 hyd 1914 : gyda sylw arbennig i ddylanwad John Walters a William Owen Pughe ar eiriadurwyr 1805-1850

Morgan, Menna E. January 2002 (has links)
Astudiaeth yw hon o hanes a datblygiad geiriaduron printiedig o 1547, sef blwyddyn cyhoeddi A Dictionary in Englyshe and Welshe gan William Salesbury, hyd ddechrau'r ugeinfed ganrif pan gyhoeddwyd geiriaduron William Spurrell dan olygyddiaeth J. Bodvan Anwyl. Astudir dros ddeg ar hugain o gyfrolau i gyd, cyfrolau a luniwyd i ddiwallu gwahanol anghenion y genedl dros gyfnod o dair canrif a hanner ac sydd, or herwydd, yn amrywio'n fawr o ran maint a chynnwys. Er mwyn gosod terfynau pendant i'r astudiaeth, fe'i cyfyngwyd i eiriaduron Cymraeg-Lladin/Lladin-Cymraeg, Cymraeg-Saesneg, SaesnegCymraeg a Chymraeg-Cymraeg. Nid ymdrinnir ä geiriaduron Beiblaidd, geiriaduron termau, geiriaduron tafodieithol na'r geirfäu Saesneg-Cymraeg a gyhoeddwyd yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg ar gyfer ymwelwyr i Gymru. Trafodir hefyd rai geiriaduron nas cyhoeddwyd am fod iddynt arwyddocäd yng nghyd-destun gweithgarwch geiriadurol diweddarach. Ystyrir y modd y defnyddiwyd hwy fel ffynhonnell gan eiriadurwyr eraill ac i ba raddau y cawsant eu golygu a'u hymgorffori yn eu gweithiau. Gan fod John Walters a William Owen Pughe yn hawlio Ile mor amlwg yn natblygiad geiriaduraeth ar ddiwedd y ddeunawfed ganrif, rhoddir sylw arbennig i dylanwad y ddau ar weithgarwch geiriadurol rhwng 1805 a 1850. Ceisir dangos hefyd sut y newidiodd agwedd pobl tuag syniadau ieithyddol a geirfa Pughe yn raddol erbyn diwedd y cyfnod clan syiw.

Ondersoek na 'n model vir die opleiding van leksikograwe vir verklarende woordeboeke

Keyser, Helane 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the past work on theoretical lexicography was often done simply "incidentally", usually flowing from research in pure linguistics. In the course of time theoretical lexicography and the compilation of dictionaries developed into a fully fledged discipline. The successful lexicographer requires particular characteristics and skills of a high quality. It appears from discussions with editors of dictionaries that even the best academic training does not necessarily produce an excellent lexicographer, as the compilation of dictionaries is a process that requires the skilful integration of theory, practice and language intuition. This study has tried to identify the knowledge, characteristics and skills that are necessary in order to train prospective lexicographers. An attempt has been made, by way of a selective literature review and conducting interviews with people engaged in the practice of lexicography, to design a model for the training of lexicographers. The study has shown that the training of lexicographers should not focus only on the theoretical aspects, but that in-service training or experience with a publisher of dictionaries is very important. A proposal is made on the subjects that should receive attention in the training of lexicographers. As part of the training model every prospective lexicographer should receive grounding in the development of management skills. A model for the compilation of dictionaries should emphasise the importance of a well thought-through conceptualisation of a plan for a dictionary as part of the lexicographical process. Lexicographers should be trained in the lexicographical process, from the collection of data to the preparation of the dictionary for publication. The purpose of the dictionary should also be identified as part of the planning phase. Prospective lexicographers must, among other things, build up an extensive knowledge of metalexicography, the general theory of lexicography, the management and planning of a dictionary project, the lexicographical process (from the collection of data to the publication and evaluation of dictionaries), aspects regarding the theories of semantics, morphology, phonology and syntax, and computer lexicography. Finally, a recommendation is made that certain components of lexicography training should also be undertaken at technikons rather than only at universities - this proposition should be researched further.

The Lexicographer's Daughter: A Memoir

Lovell, Bonnie Alice 05 1900 (has links)
This creative nonfiction dissertation is a memoir of the author's search for the somewhat mysterious hidden past of her father, the lexicographer Charles J. Lovell, who died in 1960, when the author was nine. Her father's early death left the author with many unanswered questions about his past and his family and so she undertakes a search to answer, if possible, some of those questions. Her search takes her to Portland, Maine; New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Pasadena, California, where she tries to discover the facts and uncover the forces that shaped her father's life. Along the way, she realizes how profoundly his death affected and shaped her own life, contributing to the theme of loss that pervades the memoir. In addition, she begins to realize how much her mother, Dixie Hefley Lovell, whose significance she previously overlooked, shaped her life. Ultimately, she comes to understand and accept that some of her questions are unanswerable.

An analysis of divergence in selected Northern Sotho/ English bilingual dictionaries

Makwala, Matlala Rivonia January 2020 (has links)
Thesis ( M.A. (Translation Studies and Linguistics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Bilingual dictionaries often do not meet the needs of dictionary users because they contain information that is not well presented. This poses as a challenge to the users because they end up retrieving the wrong information. Divergence is one of the most important equivalent relation in bilingual dictionaries and lexicographers often take it for granted. This study analyses the presentation of divergence in selected Northern Sotho/English bilingual dictionaries with reference to Pharos Popular Northern Sotho Dictionary and Oxford Northern Sotho/English Bilingual Dictionary. This study further analyses the use of structural markers in bilingual dictionaries because the correct/incorrect use of structural markers also have an impact on the presentation of divergence. This study reveal that bilingual dictionaries can become user-friendly and meet the needs of the users if lexicographers can apply appropriate strategies when compiling dictionaries as this will lead to communicative success

Langue d'oc v učeneckém diskursu před a po Velké francouzské revoluci / Langue d'oc in the scientists' discourse before and after the French Revolution

Křivánková, Alena January 2018 (has links)
The master thesis The Langue d'oc in the Scholarly Discourse Before and After The Great French Revolution considers the image of the Occitan language in the lexico-graphical and grammatico-graphical works that have been written between the beginning of the 18th and the mid-19th century. During this epoch, in the framework of a diglossic model, the language in question had been suffering a status of a dominated language. At the same time, however, it had awaken an interest of many scholars whose motivations for their studies ranged from a will to contribute to a proliferation of Francization to an effort to save the Occitan language and restore its own dignity. It is precisely this motivation, as well as the denominations which our authors had given to the language in question and also their strategies for its valorization or devalorization, that this text engages with. The socio-linguistic situation in the Pays d'Oc and the impact of The French Revolution and of its linguistic politics on the presence and the representation of the Occitan are also being examined. These phenomena are studied in the framework of a theory of the formation of nations by Miroslav Hroch as the phase A of the Occitan movement which had remained, at least during this phase, a purely cultural phenomenon, that is to say a...
