School library services after ERA : an investigation of the effect of the 1988 Education Reform Act on school library servicesHeeks, Peggy January 1992 (has links)
This study has addressed three core questions: What is the current state of School Library Services? How is the Education Reform Act affecting these services? Why are specific choices being made by School Library Services from the options available post-ERA? Information was gathered from questionnaires, consultation, seminars etc., and also by contact 1989-91 with 14 authorities in England and Wales. Specific matters investigated over the two-year period were: Structures; Policies; Service range and level; Relationships. The study found evidence that ERA had a significant effect during this period on library support services to schools, but that other influences on change were at work, most notably the community charge and its repercussions. All the School Library Services in the contact authorities changed between 1989 and 1991, although in different degrees, and it was observed that the effect of national legislation was being mediated by local cultures. The hypothesis that 'The Education Reform Act is leading to new perceptions of School Library Service effectiveness' was upheld, and factors making for effectiveness were identified.

There are a number of reasons as to why governments are encouraging their universities to make research activities a priority. Research leads to birth of new knowledge and theory of the world. Such new knowledge drives the economies of the world. In this regard, academic libraries have been able to provide the tools that guide clients through an avalanche of information and assist researchers to identify what meets their particular needs. However, academic libraries are facing some challenges as a result of various changes in scholarly communication as they are no longer regarded as the sole primary provider of information to researchers. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of library services in the research of postgraduate students at the University Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Mozambique. The study looked at the services the library offered to postgraduate students, the sources of information most used by postgraduate students, the research information needs of postgraduate students, the ways the postgraduate students access research materials and the challenges that postgraduate students encounter when using the System of Libraries at the UEM. The first research question was answered by reviewing the professional literature as well the empirical data obtained from the librarians via interviews. The rest of the questions were answered by the students via questionnaires as well as interviews with the library staff. The researcher self-administered a questionnaire to 200 registered postgraduate students at the UEM and conducted interviews with seven librarians. The study adopted the Multiple Constituencies Model which each of its domains effectively helping in interpreting the results of the study. The study found that between 57 (32.3%) and 58 (33%) postgraduate students use the library to search for prescribed course materials and research related work. Furthermore, the study found that 152 (88.4%) students used the Internet to search for information. Although the study showed students used the library, the major challenges that students between 35(19.9%) and 96(54.5%) faced included poor English literacy skills, unstable Internet and outdated materials.

word aangebied. 'n Model vir die ontwikkeling, implementering,
evaluering en instandhouding van 'n personeelevalueringstelsel is
ontwerp vir moontlike gebruik in die ondersoek na personeelevaluering
en/of daarstelling van 'n personeelevalueringstelsel.
Ten einde die konteks van die studie uit te lig is op die personeelbeleid
en struktuur van die Universiteit en van die Departement
Biblioteekdienste sowel as die organisatoriese plasing, doel en
funksies van laasgenoemde binne die Universiteit gelet.
As empiriese navorsing is 'n kruisseksionele studie van die teikengroep
waarin hoofsaaklik van die beskrywende navorsingsmetode gebruik
gemaak is onderneem. Vraelyste, waarin die vraelysitems hoofsaaklik
uit reeds gebruikte en getoetste vraelyste verkry is, is as primere
data-insamelingsmetode gebruik. Bykomende data is deur ongestruktureerde
persoonlike onderhoude ingesamel. Die Statistical Analysis
System-rekenaarprogram is vir dataverwerking gebruik.
In die studie is bevind dat die bestaande stelsel nie eenvormig in
die Departement toegepas word nie; en dat daar 'n betekenisvolle
verskil bestaan tussen die persepsies van geevalueerdes en evalueerders
oor die hoofdoelwitte, doelwitte, funksies en selektiwiteit van
die bestaande personeelevalueringstelsel. Dieselfde geld ten opsigte
van die rol wat personeelevaluering behoort te speel en die rol wat
dit tans in bepaalde personeelfunksies speel.
Verder is bevind dat:
die bestaande personeelevalueringstelsel vir evalueerders
bruikbaar is vir eie loopbaanontwikkeling en kommunikasie
met ondergeskiktes;
gebrek aan kommunikasie oor die doelwitte en funksie van
die personeelevalueringstelsel as die belangrikste probleem

functions of the latter within the University.
As empirical research a cross-sectional study was made of the target
group in which mainly the descriptive research method was used.
Questionnaires, in which the items were obtained primarily from
previously used and tested questionnaires, were utilised as the
primary method of data collection. Additional data were collected by
means of unstructured personal interviews. The Statistical Analysis
System computer program was used for data processing.
The study showed that there is a significant difference between the
perceptions of the persons being evaluated and the evaluators regarding
the main objectives, objectives, functions and selectivity of
the existing personnel evaluation system. The same applies to the
role that personnel evaluation should play and does play in particular
personnel functions at present.
Additional findings were that
the existing personnel evaluation system is useful to
evaluators for their own career development and communication
with subordinates;
lack of communication regarding the objectives and functions
of the personnel evaluation system is identified as
the chief problem; and
the target group is in favour of replacing the existing
system with a new one.
On the basis of the findings some of the hypotheses were accepted,
others were rejected and others again could not be proved or rejected
as acceptable. The effectiveness of the existing personnel evaluation
system could also not be proved beyond all doubt.

Comparative study of Web-based Services and Best Practices offered by top World University libraries and "A" grade accredited University libraries in IndiaDhamdhere, Sangeeta 29 July 2018 (has links)
In this study 64 web based services (bibliographical, patron education, patron communication and patron publication services) and best practices offered by the 70 top world university libraries and 39 top Indian University libraries were studied using different data analysis techniques like cross-tabulating for average scores and Pearson correlation coefficient and tests like Chi-Square Test and T-Test were applied to the raw data collected for final results. The library rankings as per their web-based services were correlated with their university rankings as per Webometric rankings and found that library web-based services rankings are correlating with their university rankings. Therefore, developing countries like India should improve their library web-based services rankings to improve their rankings at global level. / Doctor of Philosophy

The information services industry is undergoing a turbulent phase in our times, wherein the information is produced, traded, repacked, copied, reproduced, rehashed and re-sold. While information products and services are conveyed through conventional ways, it is the liaison program – which takes the place of classical ways of marketing by becoming the brand ambassador of ‘information marketing.’ Library liaisons are trained and engaged in such a way that they take on the role of aggressive salesman to marshal information and to promote the library services and information literacy. It also examines the role of librarians in the emerging digital economy to envisage and foster academic and research activities in learning organizations through library liaisons maximizing better results as a knowledge nerve centre.

The Scholarly Communications Needs of Faculty: An Evidence-Based Foundation for the Development of Library ServicesDawson, Diane January 2014 (has links)
Objectives – This exploratory research seeks to broadly understand the publishing behaviours and attitudes of faculty, across all disciplines, at the University of Saskatchewan in response to the growing significance of open access publishing and archiving. The objective for seeking this understanding is to discover the current and emerging needs of researchers in order to determine if scholarly communications services are in demand here and, if so, to provide an evidence-based foundation for the potential future development of such a program of services at the University Library, University of Saskatchewan. Methods – All faculty members at the University of Saskatchewan were sent personalized email invitations to participate in a short online survey during the month of November 2012. The survey was composed of four parts: Current Research and Publishing Activities/Behaviours; Open Access Behaviours, Awareness, and Attitudes; Needs Assessment; and Demographics. Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated. Results – The survey elicited 291 complete responses – a 21.9% response rate. Results suggest that faculty already have a high level of support for the open access movement, and considerable awareness of it. However, there remains a lack of knowledge regarding their rights as authors, a low familiarity with tools available to support them in their scholarly communications activities, and substantial resistance to paying the article processing charges of some open access journals. Survey respondents also provided a considerable number of comments – perhaps an indication of their engagement with these issues and desire for a forum in which to discuss them. It is reasonable to speculate that those who chose not to respond to this survey likely have less interest in, and support of, open access. Hence, the scholarly communications needs of this larger group of non-respondents are conceivably even greater. Conclusion – Faculty at the University of Saskatchewan are in considerable need of scholarly communications services. Areas of most need include: advice and guidance on authors’ rights issues such as retention of copyright; more education and support with resources such as subject repositories; and additional assistance with article processing charges. The University Library could play a valuable role in increasing the research productivity and impact of faculty by aiding them in these areas.
