The impact of information provided by medical libraries on clinical decision making : A study of two hospitalsAli, Irena Malgorzata, n/a January 1996 (has links)
A quantitative survey was conducted in two Canberra hospitals that aimed
at ascertaining the impact of information provided by medical libraries on
clinical decision making. Specifically, this research study investigated
clinical, cognitive and quality value of information provided by the medical
librarians to the management of patients and doctors' ability to handle
clinical cases differently as a result of such information. Furthermore, the
relative value of information received from the library was assessed by
comparing it to the value of information received from other sources in
dealing with clinical problems.
The research involved medical specialists and registrars affiliated with these
hospitals. Doctors were asked to select any clinical situation which they
frequently or currently encounter and for which further information would
be useful to them. Once their information requests were identified, they
were then asked to present such requests to the hospital library. In order to
avoid any special treatment, participants were urged not to identify
themselves to the library staff as partaking in the study. It was important
that participants did not search for the information themselves. The doctors
were asked to evaluate the material provided by the library in relation to
clinical care and, thereafter, complete a short questionnaire. This research
took place between October 1994 and March 1995. The questionnaires were
sent to 288 doctors. This represented the total population of specialists and
registrars affiliated with both hospitals at the time of the study. Analysis of
the results is based on a 34% useable response rate.
Medical specialists were by far the higher number of respondents (70%) as
compared with registrars (30%). Eighty-one per cent of the doctors said that
the information provided by the library refreshed their memory and 82% said
that it would contribute to better quality of medical care. Eighty-six per cent
indicated that some of this information was new to them and 99% said that
the information provided was up to date. Ninety-four per cent said that the
information provided by the library was of clinical value to them.
As the result of the information provided by the library 75% of respondents
would either definitely or probably handle some aspects of the clinical
situation differently than they would have done it otherwise. The level of
importance of the change for the optimal care of patients was assessed with
54% regarding it as important, 42% as moderately important.
Specifically, as the result of the information provided, the doctors were
able to change the following:
diagnosis 10%,
choice of lab tests 20%,
choice of other diagnostic investigations 24%,
choice of drugs 27%,
choice of other management 58%,
reduce length of hospitalisation 10%,
post-operative care of patients 25%,
advice given to patients 47%. On the basis of the received information the doctors were able to avoid
the following:
hospitalisation of patients 11%,
risk of hospital acquired infection 8%,
surgical intervention 19%,
tests or other investigation 23%,
additional out-patient visits 12%.
Discussions with colleagues were reported to be most valued sources of
information for the purpose of clinical decisions (59%), followed by diagnostic
imaging (49%), librarian (45%), lab tests (42%) and patients' medical records
(30%). The librarian's role as contributing to the process of clinical decisions was
rated highly with 88% ranking it as either important or moderately important.
The results of significance p test statistic performed at 0.05 significance level
suggested that, for this study, there was a significant relationship between the
frequency of library use and doctors' ability to change the choice of laboratory
tests, diagnostic investigations, and the choice of prescribed drugs.
The results of this research study demonstrate that medical librarians can
positively contribute to clinical management of patients by providing timely and
accurate information. Further research is recommended in order to determine
the impact of the whole range of library services on health care outcomes.

The study adopted the SECI model of Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995) as its theoretical framework. The service delivery points at the UWC library are as follows:  / Circulation section, which deals with walk-in  / users. These are users who, on a daily basis borrow books from and return books to the library. This section normally deals with queries such as users whose library cards are  / blocked due to outstanding library fines. It comprises front - desk staff, shelf attendants and inter-library loan staff members.  / Staff members working in the information section (IS)  / are referred to as faculty librarians (FAC/L&rsquo / s), who are regarded as section heads and liaise with faculties on campus on a regular basis. The information section deals with walk-in  / users on a daily basis.  / The other sections, namely cataloguing, acquisition and periodicals, provide mostly &lsquo / behind the scenes&rsquo / services, but their work is of such a nature that  / users have no access to their sections due to the strict policy with regard to areas of the library in which staff are working with new books and journals. Books and journals that are  / not on the cataloguing system are kept in the acquisitions and cataloguing section. This also has a significant impact on service delivery in the library. These sections have to  / ensure that books and journals are processed, in order for users to get access to these resources. This study attempted to answer the following research questions  / Is there  / evidence of knowledge sharing and creation in the UWC library? Previous issue date: 2013-12-03 / This research has as its theme the pedagogical function of the University Library throughout the educational training of undergraduate students at a private university in the state of São Paulo, Unoeste Universidade do Oeste Paulista. Its issue mostly refers to these questions: University Library, while an organization and provider of information resources, through professionals who work in it, can influence pedagogically academic life of undergraduate students of the institution? Is it possible to detect how this influence operates on its users? Is it possible to the Librarian, while performing such services to the students, develops the role of educator, participating in the process of their training? The main objective of this study was to evaluate the role of pedagogical education of the University Library played by its professional in academic undergraduate students of Unoeste. As specific goals, check if services provide support to the students and observe if they match their academic and informational expectation and requirements. Examine the potential and weaknesses of services offered to the students and also evaluate those students that are arriving and those who are leaving the University, and show the results, in order to analyse the existence of academic growth during the years they remained in the institution and used the Libraries services, and through it prove the importance of Library for their professional training. It s a quali-quantitative exploratory research, with field research as its source of information, as sought data directly from the population surveyed, and also, a case study, in which one particular case was favored, the undergraduate student, classroom modality, of this institution. To collect data, we applied an online form called SAV Evaluation System , in two stages to students from eight undergraduate courses at the first and last semester; firstly, 285 were evaluated, and at the second stage, 20% that corresponds to 90 students of the second semester students of 2013, totaling 375 students. To data analysis were used the answers from the forms and statistical graphics, during the first and second stages of this research, proving the relevance and informational support that Librarians and library services offered by the University play in the educational context, highlighting the educational influence of services offered to this intitution s students. / A presente pesquisa tem como tema, a função pedagógica educativa da Biblioteca Universitária na formação dos discentes de graduação, em uma universidade privada do interior do Estado de São Paulo, a Unoeste - Universidade do Oeste Paulista. A sua problemática se refere principalmente às questões: A Biblioteca Universitária, enquanto organização e provedora de recursos informacionais, por meio dos profissionais, que nela atuam, pode influenciar pedagogicamente a vida acadêmica dos discentes de graduação da instituição? The use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to embed library information services in a Blended Learning Environment (BLE) : a University of Pretoria Engineering studyMakhafola, Lesego January 2018 (has links)
The main objective of libraries in higher education institutions is to enable access to information that will meet the teaching, learning and research needs of the institutions’ communities (Department of Arts and Culture, 2015:18). Technology makes it easier to accomplish this by allowing librarians to embed products and services directly into the teaching, learning and research environments used by the communities. Course Management Systems such as Blackboard, are used by higher learning institutions to provide blended learning experiences. Many face-to-face lectures rely on an online module, and students appear to be more comfortable using the various online tools than ever before. For librarians, the online component of such a hybrid learning model is an opportunity to extend the traditional face-to-face library training and information literacy sessions into the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Virtually embedded librarians enable students’ access to library information online (Hoffman & Ramin, 2010:298) and libraries that have shifted towards embedding in online courses reach users at their point of need (Paganelli and Paganelli, 2017:55). If these statements are true, the question remains whether the end user is satisfied with the services rendered online or not.
Many surveys have been conducted to assess users’ satisfaction with library resources and the quality of library services (Zhang, 2015:273). Some studies investigated library use patterns of different user groups but few studies focus on the needs of Engineering students (Zhang, 2015:273) and if these needs are being addressed by embedded library services and products. The objective of this research was to establish the role that Engineering students expect an Information Specialist to play in a VLE, to identify the products and services the Engineering students expect the Information Specialist to provide, and to what extent. This was done using a case study research design.
As was expected, this research confirmed that the Engineering students recognise the importance of librarians embedding in their online modules. It is anticipated that librarians who embed online will be able to meet the needs of the students and build strong relationships with the students. If that does become the case, it is feasible to expect that the students’ use of library resources will increase. The next phase would be to build and launch a pilot project. Recommendations made for embedding in a VLE were (1) to consult with the faculty, library staff, and the instructional designer before the librarian attempts to launch embedded activities; (2) to identify the top in-demand products and services that can be embedded for each course as a matter of urgency; (3) to pilot the program with a few students and library staff and obtain feedback before the initiative is made publicly available to all students; and (4) to align the expectations or activities of the program with those of the course. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2018. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Analýza služeb veřejných knihoven pro zrakově postižené / Public Library Services for Visually Impaired: An AnalysisHrychová, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of public library services for visually impaired users. Firstly, the thesis provides a theoretical introduction to the topic. It describes several projects related to the topic, activities of chosen non-profit organizations and fundamental legislation. Secondly, the thesis focuses on provision of library services for visually impaired in public libraries in the Czech Republic and abroad. The practical part of the thesis consists of an analysis of four Czech public libraries and of a qualitative research. Finally, the findings are summarized into several recommendations which could help libraries successfully offer services for visually impaired users.
