A pilot study of the differing perceptions of public library services for children as expressed by primary school children, and their teachers and parentsEvans, Irene, n/a January 1983 (has links)
This pilot study examines the problem, "Has adult
input into children's library services, resulted in
services that children perceive as not relevant to
their own recreational and information needs?".
In examining this problem a questionnaire survey was
conducted of a specific population of children, parents
and teachers. In addition to the questionnaire survey,
structured record sheets were used to record children's
use of the public library serving the specific population,
and children's services actually provided by the local
library. The population consisted of middle and upper
primary school children, from Holt Primary School, Canberra,
and their parents and teachers.
The study indicated discrepancies in what children
perceived as important library services for children and
what parents and teachers perceived as important.
Discrepancies were also found between what children
wanted and what was actually provided by the local library
service for children.

Primary school libraries in the Australian Capital Territory 1975 : provision in relation to schools commission policy and planningGoodman, Doreen M., n/a January 1976 (has links)
The basic purpose of this study is to analyse in
general terms Schools Commission policy and planning
in regard to the development of library resources and
services for Australian primary schools in both the
government and non-government education systems. The
core of the study is a survey of the provision and
needs of primary school libraries in the Australian
Capital Territory, based on the Schools Commission
Guidelines for library services in primary schools.
The survey is not an end in itself, but is a means
of appraisal of the school libraries program of the
Australian government as viewed at the grass roots
level in one particular area.
The report falls into two sections. Section I
is an introductory section which gives firstly an
overview of the work of the Federal government in
the development of school libraries and services
between 1968 and 1975. The introductory section also
analyses the development of the Schools Commission
guideline standards for primary school libraries,
and explains the role of the standards in relation
to both the 'needs' criterion of the Commission's
educational program and the equitable distribution
of government funds. The standards are not absolutes
in terms of precise structural specifications to be
applied in all circumstances, but rather an affirmation
of possibility in relation to a given ambit.
It is in Section II that the data from the survey
of the primary school libraries in the Australian
Capital Territory is analysed, and some comparisons
are made with the Monash University study of provision
and needs in primary school libraries carried out in
1975. The objectives of the ACT survey are not, however,
oriented simply to a factual statement of provision
and needs, but also to highlighting the instrinsic and
recurring administrative problems associated with the
provision of library resources services in schools.
Issues raised by the survey relate to differentiated
staffing patterns, obsolescence of materials, centralised
versus decentralised collections, tolerable loss rate
for books, custodial attitudes of teacher-librarians,
teacher attitudes to the library, production and use
of audiovisual materials by teachers and students,
community use of school libraries, identification of
needs by individual schools, availability of central
support services for selection and processing of
materials, funding for resource provision.
In regard to conclusions the report does not
attempt to offer anything but tentative suggestions,
because of the range of variables in most cases, which
could not be eliminated or controlled in a survey of
this. type. However, some factors do emerge which could
be the basis for more detailed analysis, such as the
nature of obsolescence in regard to school library
materials, and the relationship between types of library
service and the 'open' or traditional1 structure of
the school program. There is one factor which the
survey does show quite clearly, namely the gap that
exists between policy decisions taken at the national
level and the implementation of that policy at the
local level.

Limited research has been done globally to measure library services and resources with the UNESCO Public Library Manifesto. No research has been done in South Africa, and or, the Western Cape to measure public library services with reference to the UNESCO principles. This study is a contribution towards filling this gap.</p>

Previous issue date: 2012-11-27 / Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo a proposição e aplicação de um modelo para a avaliação da satisfação dos usuários de uma biblioteca especializada, com respeito aos serviços prestados pela mesma. Uma extensa revisão da literatura nas bases Scientific Electronic Library Online - SciELO, Scopus e ISI Web of Science foi desenvolvida a fim de dar suporte à construção de um modelo para a avaliação dos serviços oferecidos por bibliotecas. Esta revisão foi especialmente útil para definir o conjunto de critérios de avaliação e para a elaboração do questionário aplicado em uma amostra composta por usuários de uma biblioteca especializada na área de tecnologia nuclear, neste caso, a do Instituto de Engenharia Nuclear – IEN. Como consequência, este trabalho pretendeu analisar os resultados visando a melhoria da qualidade dos serviços oferecidos. A amostra desta pesquisa foi composta por 117 respondentes dentre os quais retornaram 94 formulários. Como resultado, os dados coletados indicaram que os critérios nos quais a biblioteca teve melhor desempenho foram a conservação e a adequação do acervo. Por outro lado, os resultados também mostraram que os critérios atualização e cobertura internacional do acervo foram os que demandaram maior prioridade de ações de melhoria, visto que tiveram baixo desempenho e foram considerados de alta importância para os respondentes. / This research aims to propose a model for evaluating the satisfaction of the users of a specialized library, regarding the library services. An extensive literature review on the bases Scientific Electronic Library Online - SciELO, Scopus and ISI Web of Science was developed to support the construction of a model for the evaluation of the services offered by libraries. This review was especially useful to define the set of evaluation criteria and to prepare the questionnaire on a sample of users of a library specialized in the field of nuclear technology, in this case, the Institute of Nuclear Engineering – IEN. Consequently, this work intended to analyze the results to improve the quality of offered services. The sample was composed of 117 respondents of whom 94 returned forms. As a result, the collected data have indicated that the criteria on which the library best performed were the conservation and adequacy of the collection. Moreover, the results also have shown that the update criteria and international coverage of the collection are the ones have greater priority while promoting improvement actions, since they were perceived as having low performance and high importance by the respondents.

An Investigation into the Use of Mobile Phones for Health Information Delivery to Rural Women in UgandaMbawaki, Irene January 2015 (has links)
The study looked at the viability of using mobile phones by an academic health library to provide health information to rural women. It is understood that Mobile phones have become household items thereby providing an opportunity for organisation to use them for information delivery. Access to information by individuals is essential in reducing people’s levels of uncertainty especially in matters that relate to growth and survival such as health.
The central research question upon which this study was based was, “How can an academic library adopt the use of mobile phones as an information delivery device to enhance access to health information for rural women?” with sub-questions focusing on information needs and sources of health information for women and the adaptation of mobile services within the library. It further looked at appropriate partnership needed in developing mobile services for health information delivery.
Reviewed literature revealed that mobile phones are already being used by several organisations in making available information. In particular academic libraries have embraced the mobile revolution by creating mobile services for their users.
A qualitative approach was adopted for this study and interviews were used for all the three categories of respondents, who are rural women from Buyengo sub-county, health workers from Kakaire health centre iv and librarians from Albert Cook Medical Library.
Findings from the study have shown that in the information era where one’s survival is highly dependent upon information, rural women do not have access to credible sources of health information despite the fact that they have high demand for health information because of the soaring disease burden in rural areas. The study without doubt has led to the establishment that the use of mobile phones to fill this gap is a cost effective and life saving venture which if well set up and implemented will add to the global programmes initiated with the aim of reducing child mortality, maternal deaths and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2015. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted
