Identification Of Demographic Structure And Population Viability Analysis Of Gazella Subgutturosa In Sanliurfa

Cobanoglu, Aziz Emre 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) is an Asian antelope species and it is classified as Vulnerable by IUCN. They have an economic, esthetic and cultural value / therefore, they had been hunted and domesticated for a long time. Additional human disturbance over years nearly led goitered gazelle populations in Turkey to extinction. Today in Turkey, only natural population of goitered gazelle lives in Sanlurfa. In this theses, demographic structure and population parameters of natural population goitered gazelle in Sanliurfa is studied. Line transect and regular surveys are performed to collect data about demographic structure of the population such as sex ratio and group composition. Line transect sampling, which is a distance sampling technique, is used to estimate population size and density of the population. GPS collared goitered gazelles are monitored for fecundity and survival rate. Data is collected for 18 from July 2008 to December 2009 during 32 field surveys. Four main transect samplings have been performed and including transect samplings that are done during regular surveys, 90 line transects are walked. Population sizes and densities were estimated to be (average &plusmn / standard error) 242 &plusmn / 184 and 2.302 &plusmn / 1.590 individual per km2 for July 2008 / 365 &plusmn / 179 and 3.476 &plusmn / 1.707 individual per km2 for January 2009 / 319 &plusmn / 111 and 3.039 &plusmn / 1.059 individual per km2 for June 2009 and lastly, 317 &plusmn / 243 and 3.019 &plusmn / 2.315 for November 2009. Survival rate is estimated to be 0.276, 0.540 and 0.585 for calves, 1 year old and 2+ years olds respectivelty, and fecundity is estimated to be 0.4. This preliminary study shows that according to Population Viability Analysis results, natural goitered gazelle population in Turkey will be extinct in next 10 years if more effective conservation is not performed.

The Biodiversity Mirage: the Effects of Habitat Degradation and Exotic Predators on Ground-Dwelling Forest Birds, Tenrecs and Lemurs in Northeastern Madagascar

Murphy, Asia J. 03 June 2015 (has links)
Madagascar is one of the world's top conservation priorities due to the intense anthropogenic pressures on its diverse and endemic wildlife. There have been very few studies conducted in the largest protected area complex in Madagascar, the Masoala-Makira landscape (northeastern Madagascar). My goal was to examine the response of ground-dwelling forest birds, tenrecs (Lipotyphla: Tenrecidae) and lemurs to habitat degradation and the presence of exotic predators, and monitor population trends at resurveyed sites from 2008 to 2013. Using camera trap surveys and distance sampling, we observed 26 bird species (n = 4,083 observations), three spiny tenrec species (n = 244 observations) and 12 lemur species (n = 1,172 observations). Out of 13 focal species (seven bird, three tenrec and three lemur species), seven had higher point estimates of occupancy or density at intact forests when compared to intermediately degraded or degraded forest sites. Common tenrecs (Tenrec ecaudatus) and cathemeral lemurs changed their activity patterns, becoming more nocturnal in degraded forests. Feral cat (Felis sp.) trap success was negatively related to the detection of three bird species (red-breasted coua, Coua serriana; scaly ground-roller, Geobiastes squamiger; and Madagascar crested ibis, Lophotibis cristata). At two resurveyed sites (S02 and S05), out of 19 and 17 species, only four and eight species did not show consistent declines in occupancy or encounter rates, respectively, over a six-year period. This research highlights the urgent need for immediate conservation action in the Masoala-Makira protected area complex in order to protect one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. / Master of Science

Estimation Of Demography And Seasonal Habitat Use Patterns Of Anatolian Mouflon (ovis Gmelinii Anatolica) In Konya Bozdag Protection Area Using Distance Sampling

Ozdirek, Lutfiye 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The Anatolian mouflon (Ovis gmelinii anatolica) is an endemic ungulate subspecies and of IUCN Vulnerable status that inhabits Konya-Bozdag region located in Central Anatolia. In this thesis, the demography and habitat use of the only natural population of Anatolian mouflon at Konya-Bozdag Provice is studied. Throughout the study, distance sampling techniques, specifically line transect sampling, are used to estimate density, size and growth rate of this population. Sex, age and count data are used to estimate relevant parameters. Changes in population structure and seasonal area use are monitored for two years. Data is collected during repeated random line transects from May 2007 to July 2009. Line transect method is preferred since it requires less effort and is less expensive when compared to the complicated techniques that need animal marking or radio tagging. In total, 78 transect lines were surveyed during the time which covers 3 lambing periods. In spite of the paratuberculosis epidemics in the fenced area which has affected the population adversely in the previous years, a rather stable population trend is observed. The post-breeding population size in 2007, 2008 and 2009 were estimated to be 883+-241, 939+-136, 972+-243 (average+-satndard error) and densities as 27.227, and 28.186 individuals per sq km, respectively. Growth rate of population is found using the ratio of the population size estimates of consecutive years from 2007 to 2009, average 1.0495+-0.0203. Habitat use patterns of the Anatolian mouflon throughout the study period are investigated according to seasons and sex groups. There is sexual segregation in the Anatolian mouflon population in Konya Bozdag Province, with the females using the western part and males using the eastern part of Bagderesi. Seasonal patterns affect on the area use of animals, group formation and compositions and the relationship between them are searched throughout the study. The movements of the individuals and groups followed seasonal patterns as centers of activities changed according to seasons.

Levantamento das populações de callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth, 1999 em fragmentos de Mata Atlântica no Sul do estado de Sergipe, Brasil / Survey of the Populations of Callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth, 1999 in Fragments of the Atlantic Forest in the south of the Brazilian state of Sergipe

Chagas, Renata Rocha Déda 27 February 2009 (has links)
Coimbra-Filho s titi monkey (Callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth, 1999) is an endangered, but poorly-known primate that inhabits remnants of the Atlantic Forest in the Brazilian states of Sergipe and Bahia (northern coast). The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of habitat fragmentation on the ecological characteristics and provide information on population density and size, and basic ecological characteristics of the species within the study area. These data were also collected for other local primate species. The survey took place at the Fazenda Trapsa in southern Sergipe, where two survey techniques were applied playbacks (in fragments of < 50 ha) and line transects (fragments > 50 ha). A total of 476.1 km of line transect was walked between april and october, 2008. Population density was estimated using the DISTANCE program and the Kelker method. Density was also calculated directly from group counts. A total of 12 groups were identified in the four large fragments surveyed. Groups of Cebus xanthosternos and Callithrix jacchus were also observed in all four fragments. The presence of Callicebus in the two smaller fragments was confirmed by playback. The overall density in the larger fragments was 12.6 individuals per km². Both DISTANCE and Kelker provided considerable over-estimates of density. The results of this study indicate the need for caution in the interpretation and comparison of density estimates in studies of titi monkeys, as well as re-emphasizing the efficiency of alternative methods for the surveying of populations in small fragments. Fazenda Trapsa appears to have a total population of around 50 titis, which may have a good chance of survival over the long term, especially if certain conservation measures are taken. The results of the study reinforce the need for the establishment of a reserve network, and the development of active metapopulation management strategies, in order to guarantee the long-term prospects for the survival of C. coimbrai.

Distribuição e densidade de populacões de Callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth 1999, na região do Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Mata do Junco, Sergipe / DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY OF POPULATIONS CALLICEBUS COIMBRÃO KOBAYASHI & LANGGUTH 1999, IN THE REGION OF ESCAPE OF LIFE WILD FOREST OF JUNK, SERGIPE.

Rocha, Juliana Cristina ávila Glasherster da 23 March 2011 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The titi, Callicebus coimbrai, is a threatened primate endemic to the Brazilian Northeast (Sergipe and Bahia), where it faces critical levels of deforestation and habitat fragmentation. The Mata do Junco State Wildlife Refuge in Capela, Sergipe, represents one of the most important initiatives for the conservation of the species, although little is known about the local population. The present study aimed to estimate the population density and distribution of C. coimbrai with the refuge, and to record remnant populations within the surrounding area. Data were collected between March, 2010, and January, 2011. The main tract of forest at the refuge (522 ha) was surveyed using standard line transect methods, for the estimation of population density, and playbacks, for the mapping of groups. Playbacks were also used to verify the presence of the species in neighboring fragments. A total of 231.4 km were walked during the line transect survey, and the data were analyzed using the Distance program. Using the most reliable estimate of mean group size, population density for titis was estimated to be 28.7 ind./km², while that for a second primate, Callithrix jacchus, was 117.0 ind./km². No significant habitat preference was identified in either species, although titis were observed at significantly higher levels in the forest than Callithrix. In the acoustic survey, 268 of the 342 playbacks received a response (78.4% response rate), and in many cases (n = 164), two to six different titi groups responded simultaneously. Comparisons of these results with equivalent surveys at other sites indicated a much higher population density than that estimated during the line transect survey. These results indicate the need for the development of a standardized procedure for the estimation of population parameters in these primates. For the population survey, SPOT satellite images of the area around the refuge were analyzed, and 16 fragments with potential for the occurrence of titis were identified. Titis responded to playbacks at nine of these sites, although the species was not found in the largest fragments. The combined area of these new sites was 382,5 hectares. While this represents an important advance in the known distribution of the species, the study indicates a clear need for the implementation of effective strategies for the management of local forests and their fauna, in particular, Callicebus coimbrai.

Padrão de distribuição e abundância de aves e mamíferos de médio e grande porte em Ilhabela, SP, Brasil / Patterns of abundance and distribution of mid-to large-sized birds and mammals in Ilhabela, São Paulo, Brasil

Koester-Gobbo, Sabrina 22 June 2007 (has links)
São elas: macuco Tinamus solitarius (3,31 indivíduos/10 km), jacutinga Aburria jacutinga (1,5 indivíduos/10 km), tucano Ramphastus dicolorus (0,31 indivíduos/10 km), uru Odonthophorus capueira (0,1 indivíduos/10 km), murucututu Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana (0,1 indivíduos/10 km), pavó Pyroderus scutatus (0,1 indivíduos/10 km), gavião-pomba Leucopternis lacernulatus (0,31 indivíduos/10 km), caxinguelê Sciurus aestuans (1,03 indivíduos/10 km), macaco-prego Cebus nigritus (0,25 indivíduos/10 km) e tatu Dasypus novencinctus (0,05 indivíduos/10 km). / The present study had the following goals: review the literature on the history of human occupation of Ilhabela (nearly to 348 km2), survey wildlife species (mid- to large-sized mammals and birds) from São Sebastião Island by linear transects, test the validity of such method when animal counting is performed both ways on the trail, and check the possible relationship between wildlife abundance and phytophysionomic variables. Ilhabela has a history of three and half centuries of agriculture such as sugar-cane and coffee plantations. Possibly, before European colonization Ilhabela was already inhabited by native Americans. Nowadays, Ilhabela has 26.000 inhabitants plus a great number of tourists all along the year. The impact of such dramatic population increase on the island natural resources is possibly greater than the agricultural impact from the former centuries. From May 2004 to Jun 2005 surveys have been conducted on 11 trails distributed thought São Sebastião Island. The number of animal sights was smaller during trail return, what suggests that forward and backward countings in the same trail are not independent. Considering only forward counting 192, 95 km have been walked resulting in the detection of seven species of birds and three species of mammals on the total of 138 animal sights. The birds were: solitary tinamou Tinamus solitarius (3,31 individuls/10 km), guan Aburria jacutinga (1,50 indivíduos/10 km), tucan Ramphastus dicolorus (0,31 individuls/10 km), spot-winged wood-quail Odonthophorus capueira (0,10 individuls/10 km), tawny-browed owl Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana (0,10 individuls/10 km), red-ruffed fruitcrow Pyroderus scutatus (0,10 individuls/10 km) and white-necked hawk Leucopternis lacernulatus (0,31 individuls/10 km). The mammals were: squirrel Sciurus aestuans (1,03 individuls/10 km), capuchin monkey Cebus nigritus (0,25 individuls/10 km) and nine-banded long-nosed armadillo Dasypus novencinctus (0,05 individuls/10 km). There was a marginally significant relationship between palm trees density and wildlife abundance. Other phytophysionomic variables such as trees densities and thickness and canopy height suggest that there are currently two forest environments at the island, one pristine and another altered. The observed species did not show any diel (i.e., morning vs. afternoon) nor seasonal (i.e., winter 2004 vs. summer 2004/2005) variation in their activity patterns. This study might be useful for future wildlife monitoring and conservation research in Ilhabela.
