Female Gender Representation in The Terminator Franchise

Beis, Triantafyllos January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the representation of the female gender in theTerminator franchise and to examine whether there has been an evolution in thisrepresentation throughout the years. For this purpose, the representation of the lead femalecharacter, Sarah Connor, has been examined in the films The Terminator (Cameron, 1984),Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Cameron, 1991) and Terminator Genisys (Taylor, 2015), inwhich Sarah Connor is the only main female character. The thesis begins by providing athorough presentation of the situational, specific and the theoretical background of the threefilms analysed. Then, the methodology used in the research is described and linguistic, visualand contextual data are provided. These data are then analysed and discussed in relation tothe background of the films and to the objectives set at the beginning of the research. Inparticular, the linguistic aspect of gender representation is explored based on the waylanguage is used to represent women in the Terminator films. After a thorough analysis ofdata collected and discussed, the research concluded that there has, indeed, been an evolutionin female gender representation in the Terminator films, which reflects an evolution in theperception of gender by society itself.

Intentionally fabricated autobiographical memories

Justice, L.V., Morrison, Catriona M., Conway, M.A. 28 October 2016 (has links)
Yes / Participants generated both autobiographical memories (AMs) that they believed to be true and intentionally fabricated autobiographical memories (IFAMs). Memories were constructed while a concurrent memory load (random 8-digit sequence) was held in mind or while there was no concurrent load. Amount and accuracy of recall of the concurrent memory load was reliably poorer following generation of IFAMs than following generation of AMs. There was no reliable effect of load on memory generation times; however, IFAMs always took longer to construct than AMs. Finally, replicating previous findings, fewer IFAMs had a field perspective than AMs, IFAMs were less vivid than AMs, and IFAMs contained more motion words (indicative of increased cognitive load). Taken together, these findings show a pattern of systematic differences that mark out IFAMs, and they also show that IFAMs can be identified indirectly by lowered performance on concurrent tasks that increase cognitive load.

Literary genres as points of interest in print advertising

Van Niekerk, A., Conradie, M. January 2014 (has links)
Published Article / The article focuses on the interplay between print advertisements and literary genres such as poetry, drama, folklore, etc. This interplay may be used to develop an advertisement's point of interest to attract attention from a specific target audience. Based on previous research we hypothesise that literary genres are exploited as a means to engage audiences. The study aims to give a description of the typical genre characteristics of modern literary genres in SA print advertising. It also endeavours to do a pragmatic analysis of these advertisements against the background of the specific literary genre category and the genre qualities of advertisements to identify the implied marketing message.

Annotating figurative language

Beyer, Stefan, Di Biase-Dyson, Camilla, Wagenknecht, Nina 20 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Whereas past and current digital projects in ancient language studies have been concerned with the annotation of linguistic elements and metadata, there is now an increased interest in the annotation of elements above the linguistic level that are determined by context – like figurative language. Such projects bring their own set of problems (the automatisation of annotation is more difficult, for instance), but also allow us to develop new ways of examining the data. For this reason, we have attempted to take an already annotated database of Ancient Egyptian texts and develop a complementary tagging layer rather than starting from scratch with a new database. In this paper, we present our work in developing a metaphor annotation layer for the Late Egyptian text database of Projet Ramsès (Université de Liège) and in so doing address more general questions: 1) How to ‚tailor-make’ annotation layers to fit other databases? (Workflow) 2) How to make annotations that are flexible enough to be altered in the course of the annotation process? (Project design) 3) What kind of potential do such layers have for integration with existing and future annotations? (Sustainability)

The Best Foot Forward : Self-Presentation and the Creation of Respectability Through Job Advertisements in the Public Press, 1800

Caroline, Lindroth January 2016 (has links)
This study investigates how power relations were negotiated and expressed through the use of certain linguistic practices in a public context. More specifically, it looks closer at how job applicants presented themselves publically through newspaper advertisements and which discursive codes they made use of to portray themselves as reputable, desirable employees that fit into the bourgeois concept of respectability. The survey accordingly moves within the theoretical frameworks of the respectability discourse, altering power relations, self-presentation and the public sphere, and does so through the application of linguistic methods on a very specific material not commonly looked at from these macro-perspectives. The first part of the analysis identifies which specific social groups that used the press as a channel for self-presentation, focusing on the aspects of gender, marital status, work experience and occupational title. Through establishing this information, we reach an understanding of who can be ascribed an active participation in the public sphere and where to place these individuals along the social scale. Thereafter, the vocabulary of the advertisers is scrutinized and compared to see how strategies to create an air of respectability around yourself may have differed with the personal aspects mentioned above. Conclusively, the results from these enquiries serve as the basis for a larger discussion on whether the assertive self-promotion of the job advertisers can be interpreted as a self-empowerment among a section of London’s labourers, or whether the publication of the adverts rather is to be seen as a consolidation of already existing power relationships. The findings prove that through their strict adherence to the concept of respectability in a desire to win the favour of their social superiors, the linguistic strategies of the adverts cannot be interpreted as an early form of working class-movement with the intention of overthrowing the social order. On the contrary, the hierarchical structure of the 18th century was as present as ever when society moved towards the next centenary and was consolidated even further by the linguistic strategies of the advertisers.

Sucessivamente, elaboramos nosso glossário e procedemos à análise do conjunto de termos fundamentais do setor feirístico, destacando os principais problemas encontrados na busca e no estabelecimento de equivalências em inglês / Abstract: Our research aims to analyze the bilingual terminology (portuguese-english) of the trade fair sector, specifically the terms used during the process of preparation, participation and post-show, with the main specific goal of compiling a bilingual glossary (portuguese-english/english-portuguese) for the use of professionals from the trade fair sector, researchers and students of the foreign trade and international relations areas as well as translators. The research is based on the theories of Alpízar-Castillo (1995), Alves (1996), Aubert (1996), Barros (2004, 2007), Boutin-Quesnel (1985), Cabré (1993, 1999), Krieger e Finatto (2004), Barbosa (1996, 2010), Dubuc (1985), Berber Sardinha (2004), Babini (2001a, 2001b, 2006) and Faulstich (1998, 2001). Cultura de segurança versus cultura de risco : estudo psicossocial sobre o olhar e a possibilidade de captação de informações ambientais / Safety culture versus risk culture: A psychosocial study about the regard and its caption possibilities of environment information.

Fabriani, Carmen Beatriz Rodrigues 28 January 2005 (has links)
This study aims to make clear how people react to catastrophic natural or social events, which may represent significant losses to its social psychic or physical identity. The observable phenomenon is the noncommunicability of risk translated in strategic operation inaction in face of threatening situations. This study holds the hypothesis that an individual faces risk in a nonreasonable way. In this research, the data was collected in a neighborhood in which dwellers suffered a catastrophic flood on February 17, 2003. A number of semiopen interviews were conducted in order to find the meaning of this noncommunicability of risk. According to the answer to a given question, the next question was formulated seeking to clarify the information given. It was assumed that this noncommunicability of risk is placed in the intersection of the psychic, social and logic spheres, where rational thinking is an explanatory appendix but does not contribute to the argument. The analysis of the threatening fact is not part of the decision argument of the subject; it is an appendix to it. The argument analysis method was used in the data analysis in order to demonstrate externality of the logic argument, which is used in a nonlogic way.
