Trindade, Alexandre Wesley. January 2012 (has links)
I d.C. / Abstract: The aim of this work was to analize the patterns of aspect usages in Greek writer Apollodorus, by means of empirical approach, from a electronic database and statistically tested. The main methodological underpinning for the exploratory research was provided by Corpus Linguistics because in the fundamental concept language is a probabilistic system and it must be studied by an empirical approach. The assumption of this view of language is that the theoretical possibilities of linguistic features do not correspond with the frequency of occurrence. This difference is not significant only in statistical point of view, it demonstrates that is typical of language the presence of (i) a regular pattern showed and (ii) a systematic variations. As language patterns were considered collocational patterns. The corpus chose was the work Library (Biblioteca in portuguese), whose authorship is attributed to Apollodorus, first century CE. This corpus is therefore suitable for the study of patterns of aspect usages because it is composed of authentic texts in natural language. The identification of verbal aspect was due to the ending location of the pertinent verbal correlate with higher rate of frequency, using the program AntConc, which generated a word list listing the verbs accounted for. From the occurrences of verbs chosen was established the most frequent verbal aspect in order to define the unit of analysis. The selection criterion was given verbal aspects of the opposition of verbal stems, considering the opposition of three verbal stems: present stem, perfect stem, and aorist stem. The corpus used in the AntConc program was not tagged. In order to examine, POS tagging was used to steady in the Perseus Digital Library. Among the sample of verbal occurrences, the stem of the aorist had the highest frequency. Through statistical analysis, collocational pattern infinitive + participle was the most frequent / Mestre

Ezra Pound's theory of language

Dowthwaite, James January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines Ezra Pound's linguistic theory in relation to literary, philosophical and academic treatments of language in the modernist period. Pound is a central figure in the history of twentieth century literature, and his poetic career marks a sustained engagement with questions of how language can register thought, how it can transmit and communicate images, and, ultimately, how language is able to mediate between artists (or, indeed, language speakers as a whole) and the world. I read Pound's statements on language against the disciplinary history of linguistics, assessing the extent to which his positions are representative of his period, or, conversely, the ways in which they form part of an idiosyncratic worldview. My approach is broadly historical. I begin with Pound's educational background, and move chronologically through his career to the concluding passages of his Cantos. I investigate the extent to which Pound's critical writing engages with new departures taking place in linguistics in the late nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century. The scope of my investigation ranges from the legacy of nineteenth century philology to the approaches taken by William Dwight Whitney, Michel Bréal, and Ferdinand de Saussure, to name but a few, in focusing linguistic scholarship on synchronic study of language as function in the early twentieth century, to Franz Boas's and Edward Sapir's studies in the relationship between language and culture between 1910 and 1939. In situating Pound in relation to the history of linguistics as a discipline, I argue that his work asks some of the period's most apposite questions about language and culture, even if his conclusions differ from the dominant academic positions of the time.

Mendoza-Canales, Ricardo 25 September 2017 (has links)
Despite of his desire for inscribing himself into a Modern (Romantic) poetic tradition, Luis Hernandez’ poetry reveals an inner tension as a result of fragmentation of postmodern subject. This essay studies the use of parody in Luis Hernandez’ poetry as a discursive strategy that plays a double dissemination: on the one hand, parody demystifies the standard conventions of his time about poetry and poetic language as a belle art and about the notion of author as the ultimate redoubt of signification. On the other hand, in Hernandez’ poetry, parody opens the field of meaning ISSN 0254-9239256 Lexis  Vol. XXXIII (2) 2009just for including intertextual and cultural features that dissolve, in poetic praxis, the division between high and mass culture.

Florilegium

Vogel, Molly January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is composed of two parts, encompassed in a third: a poetry collection; a critical dissertation; and an artist’s book. The thesis as a whole is entitled Florilegium. This title, from the Latin flos, or ‘flower’, and legere, ‘to gather’, refers to the medieval system of collecting extracts from various authors to form a larger body of work. It is also applicable to flower-treatises, dedicated to their ornamental nature rather than medicinal or scientific. The critical dissertation comes in the form of a glossary. It intends to show that the flower plays an essential role in linking Modernist poetics with that of its Romantic predecessors and beyond. In isolated and ‘illuminated’ examples from Aristotle to Zukofsky, it examines the lineage of botanical poetry, in the light of its unique linguistic makeup: a vernacularized scientific lexicon established in the Latin of Carl Linnaeus. While the critical component of the thesis is an interrogation of botanical language, the poetry collection is its living representation. To enhance the living nature of the text, I have designed and printed an artist’s book, which also acts as an herbarium for floral specimens collected and pressed over the duration of my degree. The design of the book is in keeping with traditional florilegia, incorporating historic binding techniques, typography, paper, and size.

Reflexiones para la historia del quechuismo cachua

Ezcurra, Álvaro 25 September 2017 (has links)
The present article examines the history of the incorporation of the Quechua loanword “cachua” into Spanish. The “cachua”, a dance and song of Andean origin, was identified as idolatrous ever since its first appearance in documents of the 16th century and in the colonial Quechua lexicography. First, we offer a brief panorama of the contact between Quechua and Spanish in the colonial era and a text revision of historiographic, juridical and catechetical documentation, as well as of the old and contemporary lexicographical works in which the word is documented. Subsequently, we will concentrate on the incorporation of the loan at issue based on communicative, phonetic and semantic aspects.
