O doméstico e o ritual no cotidiano Xaray no Alto Paraguai até o século XVI / Domestic and ritual $$b Xaray quotidian in the Upper Paraguay until the sixteenth century

Migliacio, Maria Clara 28 June 2006 (has links)
This research deals with functional and spatial aspects of a set of archeological sites located in the northern area of the Mato Grosso Pantanal known as the Pantanal of Cáceres. Within a context of cultural diversity which characterizes the region of the Gran Chaco and Upper Paraguay, archeological sites associated with Pantanal ceramics (attributed to groups of fishermen, hunters and collectors) and Descalvados ceramics (attributed to groups of farmers), are discussed in terms of the lithic and ceramic material, as well as the distribution of these remains. For the first time, a study is being carried out on the lithic material of the occupation by the Descalvados revealing the production of decorations. During the study, different levels of relationships were explored starting from the possible functions of the sites in the realm of site systems through to the internal organization of a site occupied by the Descalvados. In order to discuss the site systems, variables such as the surrounding area and variations in the archeological material present in distinct sites were taken into consideration. For discussion of the internal organization of the site, ceramic and lithic material were compared as well as archeological structures to which specific functions were attributed. Binary opositions such as domestic utensils vesus ritual paraphernalia and domestic space versus funeral spaces are explored from a structuralist perspective permitting a view of the material and non-material aspects of the Descalvados occupation. The discussion extrapolates the ecological, functionalist approach since it deals with aspects which go beyond the practical functions of the material and spatial elements. Also, some previously constructed hypotheses are tested such as the functions of the ceramic containers and the possible concomitance of the occupations associated with the Pantanal and Descalvados ceramics. New absolute datings were obtained filling in temporal gap that existed with respect to the Descalvados occupation taking back the beginning of the occupation by groups associated with Pantanal ceramics by one millennium

The Cabeças 04 site is located in the city of Felício dos Santos, in the Araçuaí river basin, an affluent of Jequitinhonha River, in Minas Gerais. It is an archaeological site with three well defined stratigraphic layers with five moments of occupation. Primarily at the base of the last layer there are three distinct moments that can be noticed that the site was occupied. By the dates it is presented periods of intervals (abandonments) with a range of up 1000 years. It is geologically located in the Serra do Espinhaço area, called Serra Negra area (east side). The site is in the proximity of the three main state basins: São Francisco, Jequitinhonha, and Doce. For the Plateau Diamantinense there are human occupations that consist of the transition from the Pleistocene-Holocene and to the Holocene-Superior. Recent dates made in the Cabeças 04 site allowed to identify a chronology that appears for the Holocene-Middle period, unpublished for the region. The objective was to analyze the lithic complex dated to the Holocene-Middle of the Cabeças 04 site, following the concept of operative chains. It was necessary to understand about raw material choices, reduction techniques and inferring about their social use. In this way, it cooperated to important new archaeological information in the region. It helped favoring the expansion of the knowledge of the relations of the groups and their environments, especially for the continuous occupations in the Serra Negra region, from approximately 7000 AP

Exchange, know-hows, and interpersonal segmentation : an assessment of the archaic component of the Gaudreau (BkEu-8) site, Weedon, Quebec

Gauvin, Gaétan 04 1900 (has links)
The Gaudreau site is a disturbed multicomponent site located in Southeastern Quebec, with occupations dating from the Late Paleoindian into the historic period. The Archaic occupations, noted through the presence of multiple diagnostic bifaces forms and macrotools, are the primary subject of this thesis. As no occupations can be isolated horizontally nor vertically, and no non-diagnostic artifacts can be associated with certitude, only a sample of 32 objects were analyzed. As only a small sample of the assemblage was analyzed, it is likely that more raw material source areas were used during the Archaic occupations of the site. Nonetheless, the resulting raw material networks are similar to those of the Megantic Lake region, with a strong representation of Kineo-Traveller rhyolite and Appalachian cherts. Great Lakes cherts are also present, as is Cheshire quartzite. Local silicified mudstone and quartz are weakly represented in the sample, though this is likely an effect of source proximity resulting in the near absence of completed forms made of local raw materials. The technical analysis of the sample, without control for techno-economic practices, denotes many technical recurrences within typological groupings, with no significant and recurring differences between raw materials of different source regions. Due to sample size and to the disturbed context, the significance of objects linked due to similarities in technique is doubtful. Interpersonal segmentation of operational sequences could not be determined, though the evidence appears to point towards the circulation of raw materials in multiple forms. It is to be assumed that, outside of the locally obtained raw materials, the occupants of the Gaudreau may not have had a direct access to any of the exogenous sources.

Caçadores-coletores do médio vale do Paranaíba, Minas Gerais: estudo inter-sítios da cadeia operatória e sistema tecnológico / Hunter-gatherers of the middle valley of Paranaíba, Minas Gerais: Inter-site study of the operative chain and technological system

Alex Sandro Alves de Barros 10 August 2018 (has links)
The Archaeological Project Quebra Anzol - MG, which deals with the study of the operative chains and technological system related to the lithic industries from the ATM- 691 sites, located in the municipality of Tupaciguara - MG, Novo 1, Novo 2, Canindé and Buraco Seco, located in the municipality of Monte Alegre de Minas - MG, in addition to a correlation with the data referring to the most backward occupations of the Rezende site, located in the Municipality of Centralina - MG, in all cases characterized as open - air sites touching contexts of occupations of populations with extractive economy of provision related to the activities of hunting, gathering and fishing and that has as its only remaining material lytic culture. The main objective of this study was to analyze the sociocultural dynamics in its intra-site understanding, so as to carry out a detailed study of the archaeological sites from the perspective of the analysis of the operative chain and the technological system of the lithic vestiges, as well as the inter-site analysis, which aims to correlate the data obtained in the study of the five sites proposed together with the data of another site already studied in the region, so that it was possible to verify possible permanences and cultural changes manifested through the technology present in the artifactual ensembles derived from the dynamics of hunting populations which allowed us to conceive a regional empirical model of occupation based on the characterization of the landscape, economy of supply, social organization and typification of lithic technology for the middle valley of Paranaíba

Tecnologia lítica: estudo da variabilidade em sítios líticos do nordeste do estado de São Paulo / Lithic Technology: a study of assemblage variability on lithic archaeological sites in Northeastern São Paulo State

Galhardo, Danilo Alexandre 28 April 2010 (has links)
The main objective of this research is the study of the production technology of chipped stone artifacts and their operational sequence on lithic archaeological sites located in Northeastern São Paulo State. A bibliographic research was made based, firstly, on the amateur and specialized archaeological literature related to this specific subject, paying attention to the lithic production technology and looking for different topics such as locational preferences of the archaeological sites and the types of raw materials and their supports, in other words, the raw materials economy chose by the artisans. All methodological and theoretical operational sequence (\"chaîne opératoire\") was used, including the search for the artisans\' gestures - a diacritical analysis, intending to reconstruct through the operational processes and the gesture sequence the artisans\' mental project, related to a technical matrix - their technical tradition. Finally, the analytical results are presented, summarizing the operational sequences and illustrating lithic artifacts with drawings. Although lithic artifacts had been studied directly, focusing attention on its technical attributes, it is known that they represent more than a particular context, they may provide, even indirectly, interpretations about a whole system of sites.

Di Modica, Kévin 09 December 2010 (has links)
Belgium is noted for its many ancient prehistoric sites which are spread over a limited geographic area. Despite its limited size, this area shows important regional contrasts in terms of topographic relief and availability of mineral resources. These factors in conjunction with important regional differences related to the types of sites represented (cave/open air) as well as the proximity and morphology of the available flint make this area favorable for the study of man's relationship with his environment. The connection between the Neanderthal populations and the types of environments encountered constitutes the focus of this study which is divided into four closely associated parts. The first part is devoted to environmental variation starting with the interface between the flint-rich plains of Middle Belgium and the deep valleys of Upper Belgium. Only a few kilometers separate these two contrasting environments. Chronological variations follow because quaternary sedimentation had as much impact on the accessibility of lithic resources as on site preservation. The history of the research from 1829 to the present is also addressed. The motives and constraints of the researchers are responsible for both the abundance of documentary evidence and for the extremely variable quality of these documents. The second part concerns the previously mentioned documentation. Artifacts attributable to the Middle Paleolithic have been recovered from 437 sites : 46 sites (16 major ones) are found in karstic contexts and 391 sites (31 major ones) are open air sites. The distribution of these sites is a direct result of taphonomic processes, circumstances of discovery, and choices made by the Neanderthals themselves. In particular, two environments were favored : the plains which have abundant flint resources and the caves of the Mosan Basin. Prehistoric Man's choice of sites appears to be linked to topographical position : plateaus or cliff tops overhanging small valleys were preferred. Chronological distribution is also examined. It notably shows an abundant documentation from the Beginning of the Weichselian Pleniglacial and an absence of occupation during the Lower Weichselien Pleniglacial It also shows a concentration of archaeological evidences related to the Middle Weichselian Pleniglacial which is very exceptional for Northwest Europe. Based on research to date, Scladina Cave (38.000 B.P.) gives the most recent date for Middle Palaeolithic industries and Betche-aux-Rochtes at Spy (36.000 B.P.) provides the date for the last Neanderthals. The third part consists of a detailed study of ten lithic industries and their environmental context. Several general tendencies were detected in the way Palaeolithic populations adapted their systems of acquisition and exploitation of rocks. Clear variations in the systems of acquisition and exploitation along a northwest/southeast gradient were noted. In Lower Belgium, the use of local flint pebbles was coupled with the importation of nuclei and flakes from Middle Belgium. In Middle Belgium, the available local flint was used almost exclusively. Recourse to other local rocks or to imports was very exceptional. In Upper Belgium, the importation of flint from Middle Belgium in combination with other locally available materials constituted the rule. These variations in the systems of raw material procurement generated diversity in terms of nature, morphology, conditioning, and availability of the nodules chosen by the knappers. These diverse parameters impacted the technical choices of the Neanderthals during the reduction or debitage stage. Other important regional differences were also observed. The sites of Upper Belgium exhibited economic options which manifested in the reduction of blocks (Trou du Diable at Hastière) and in extreme adaptations or manipulation of concepts of reduction such as those recognized in several refittings from Scladina Cave. The sites of Middle Belgium exhibited an extravagant use of the primary material and a strict expression of different concepts : mainly Levallois, also Discoid, and volumetric blade production (gisement paléolithique d'otrange, Obourg Canal). The fourth part is devoted to a discussion of the results and a preliminary comparison to the rest of Europe. The connection of the diversity in lithic productions and the geographic position of the sites is particularly important. Lithic industries from the two occupation layers of Scladina (layers 5 and 1A) present more analogies between themselves than other plenicomtemporaneous sites in different environments (lays 1A of Scladina and WFL of Veldwezelt-Hezerwater). Other factors of variability superimpose themselves in this diverse region : function of the sites, cultural traditions and techniques, palaeoenvironmental variations, chronology. Comparisons with the results obtained from regions bordering Belgium as well as those obtained from greater distances showed some behavioural similarities in southern Europe in environments which evoke aspects of the karst valleys of the Mosan Basin.

Henriet, Jean-Pierre 04 1900 (has links)
This research project seeks to better understand the phenomenon of tabular quartzite tools from the archeological site Elfs-010. No detailed work had yet been carried out on this type of tool, leaving a void to fill. To respond as adequately as possible to this problem, we focused our work on three main objectives. First, determine if tabular pieces of quartzite were the product of a particular lithic technology or of a natural geological process. Second, evaluate whether we are dealing with a unique phenomenon that is specific to site Elfs-010. Third, and finally, define if a specific time period corresponds to this industry. The results of our research show that tabular pieces of quartzite from site Elfs-010 occur naturally on the talus slope of the Colline Blanche. Their low average thickness and their steep sides were probably the factors that most influenced their selection. Based on these two characteristics, we suggest they could be used interchangeably as blades or burins. We identified 33 Jamesian sites that had at least one fragment of tabular quartzite. Despite some archaeological evidence, it is still too early to say that this industry is diagnostic of a Jamesian cultural group. Our chronological data suggest that this industry flourished around 1300 years BP. In addition, it appears that the geographic areas that we have attributed to the sites correspond to culturally well-defined sequences. Finally, our proposed hypotheses for future research concern the events that took place around 1300 years BP and which, like the tabular pieces of quartzite, are indicative of changes in the lifestyle of prehistoric groups of the James Bay region. Rupture technique et dynamiques d’occupation au cours de l’Holocène moyen au Brésil / Technical break and occupation dynamics in Brazil during middle Holocene

Da Costa, Amélie 15 June 2017 (has links)
During middle Holocene, between 8000 and 4000 BP, central and northern Brazil lithic industries were often described in terms of lacks more than tangible characteristics: lacks of “lesma” (unifacial shaping tool), lacks of ceramics. Specific technical features linked to that period are not easy to pinpoint because of a high level of artifacts diversity. Described as somewhat elaborate or simple, the specific nature of these industries highlights differences between this period and the previous one. To explain such a change in material culture, external factor hypothesis were proposed: huge environment modification due to climate change, new population that replaces another one. However, it is uneasy to evaluate break modalities regarding few studies on these period assemblages. Our work proposes to characterize the technical systems for the middle Holocene, and, by this way, to broach the technical break phenomenon using Itaparica techno-complex. Two middle Holocene lithic assemblages were study in a techno-functional way: la Toca Nova do Inharé, in Serra da Capivara (Piauí) and the Cajueiro site (BA-RC-19) northeastern of the central plateau (Bahia). Results reveal shared characteristics and significant variability. Organization of different functional parts of tools outlined around recurrent presence of abrupt sides, form a strong shared feature. Tool blanks have, however, high degree of variability according to different sites, explaining the lack of strictly defined tools. Our results compared to available literature data allow us to confirm that these features are specific to these middle Holocene industries and also to bear out the existence of a significant technical break with the Itaparica techno-complex.
