The relationship between language and culture has long been acknowledged, defined and discussed in the literature on foreign language learning and teaching (Kramsch, 1997; Krasner, 1999; Omaggio, 2001), though the integration of culture into foreign language learning has been inconsistent. Linguistic competence alone is not enough for learners to be competent in that language, and language learners need to be aware of the culturally appropriate ways to address people, express gratitude, make requests, and agree or disagree with someone. Language must be used with other culturally appropriate behavior to be successful. Despite the critical relationship between language and culture in effective foreign language instruction, postsecondary foreign language education lacks benchmarks, best practices or empirical standards for cultural integration. This forces college instructors of foreign language without guidance about how and when to integrate culture into their instruction. This descriptive case study examines the ways in which culture is integrated into a Basic Russian language university course. Through direct classroom observation, interviews with the instructor and a review of the textbook, the researcher examined the integration of big “C” culture and little “c” culture into foreign language instruction. The observations affirmed the general assertion that cultural infusion in college-level language instruction is limited and often delivered only as incidental additions to grammar and mechanics. Further, it was noted that instructors lack guidance about how to effectively integrate culture into their teaching, and this was further affirmed through a review of the class textbook. The study concludes with recommendations for further study into effective practices for cultural infusion into foreign language instruction and recommendations for improving foreign language teaching through the integration of culture. / text

Healthy spiritual development of adolescents is lacking in our society. Research shows that the topic of spiritual development for adolescents has been neglected for some time. It is clear from Scripture that spiritual development needs to take place in the life of a believer and that it is in fact an ongoing process. Even though spirituality has not been classified as something scientific during the modern era, spirituality has made its way back in scientific circles. The scientific disciplines of sociology and psychology have indicated that adolescents have a need for spiritual development and that spiritual issues are important to them. However, adolescents of the twenty-first century also face some unique challenges that have an impact on their spiritual development. Both the quantitative and qualitative methods of research were used and it was clear from both these studies that there were certain areas with regard to spiritual development that needed attention. The results in particular showed that the majority of those adolescents who took part in the research did not spend enough time on spiritual practices and most of them have taken part in some form of risky behaviour. The overall influences from family, friends and youth leaders were positive and in general it seemed that the majority of adolescents who took part in the research had a good relationship with parents and youth leaders. Adolescents need help in their spiritual development and according to Scripture parents and youth/church leaders have the responsibility to assist them. In this study the former mining town and present ski resort of Alta, Utah, and the Little Cottonwood Canyon (in which Alta is located) are treated as one unit of study. After a brief treatment of the natural setting, man's earliest activities in the region are traced through the winter of 1966. Activities which are examined include: exploring, trapping, logging, grazing, milling with the major emphasis upon quarrying, mining, skiing and settlement. Until 1864 the region was utilized for non-mining activities. By the 1870's, mining "boomed" and various settlements were established in the canyon. The most famous of these was Alta. Although not formally chartered, Alta was typical of frontier mining camps. Following the decline of mining, the area lay somewhat dormant until the advent of organized skiing in 1937. Now Alta's wealth is found in the snow that falls upon surrounding mountains and not in the silver that was mined from them.
