Ultra-thin Single-crystalline Silicon Membrane Solar Cells as a Light-trapping Test Platform

<p>The photovoltaics (PV) research community is currently pursuing many approaches to reduce the cost of PV and increase the energy conversion efficiency. Single-crystalline silicon (sc-Si) solar cells are able to achieve high efficiency but have a higher cost relative to other technologies. It may be possible to drastically reduce the cost of sc-Si PV by fabricating solar cells which are an order of magnitude thinner than conventional solar cells, i.e. thinner than 30 microns. Aside from new fabrication paradigms, ultra-thin sc-Si solar cells require advanced light-trapping techniques to enhance the absorption of long-wave radiation which is otherwise transmitted through the cell. In this thesis, a novel process flow for the fabrication of ultra-thin sc-Si solar cells in the laboratory was designed and implemented with the aim of testing light-trapping structures in the context of actual ultra-thin sc-Si devices. The process flow uses 10 micron thick sc-Si membranes, 0.95 cm in diameter, fabricated on silicon-on-insulator wafers using double-sided processing. The best fabricated device incorporated a back surface field, a white paint diffuse rear reflector and a silicon nitride antireflection coating. It achieved a fill factor, efficiency, short circuit current and open circuit voltage of 0.67, 9.9%, 27.9 mA cm<sup>-2</sup> and 0.53 V respectively. Simulations suggest the device efficiency can approach 15.4% without light-trapping and 16.5% with a diffuse rear reflector as a light trapping structure. This process flow is intended to be used as a platform on which to test further light-trapping structures with the continuation of this project.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Design of Affordable Portable Mechanical Ventilator

This report outlines developing a mechanism for a relatively low in price, portable, and mechanical ventilator prototype designed to bridge the gap in ventilator access brought about the COVID-19 pandemic. The key goal is to create a portable and easy to use device which will be capable of providing constant and effective respiratory support in areas having limited resources. The ventilator uses the Oscillating Cylinder Mechanism (OCM), which makes the ventilation smoothly and continuously. This eliminates the need for the user to put maximum effort and the patient benefits. Different ideas about designs were being put forward, concentrating on the portability, functionality, reliability, safety, and effectiveness. The OCM was selected because of its ventilation parameter adjustment ability to accommodate patient-specific needs, thereby functioning in a variety of clinical settings. Although upfront complexity and cost are developed, long-term perks such as lower user fatigue and maintenance expenses compensate for the financial investment. The end design will help in the emergency medical care especially in demand emergency situations, in ambulances, and in intensive care.

Deployment of Efficient Wireless Sensor Nodes for Monitoring in Rural, Indoor and Underwater Environments

Existen muchos trabajos relacionados con el diseño y desarrollo de nodos sensores, donde se presentan gran variedad de aplicaciones. Las redes de sensores inalámbricos pueden facilitarnos y mejorar algunos aspectos de nuestra vida diaria. Es fácil, pensar que si este tipo de dispositivo es tan beneficioso para nosotros y para el entorno donde vivimos, su precio debería ser relativamente barato. Pero podemos comprobar que esto no es así. ¿Por qué estos dispositivos son tan caros? ¿Sería posible desarrollar dispositivos con las mismas capacidades y precios más económicos? ¿Cómo puedo fabricar mis nodos sensores de bajo coste? Esta tesis responde a estas preguntas y muestra algunas de las muchas aplicaciones que los nodos sensores pueden tener. En esta tesis hemos propuesto (e implementado en algunos casos) el desarrollo de nodos sensores para la monitorización del medio, a partir de dispositivos de bajo coste. Para la implementación de un nodo sensor, y en definitiva la red que une a todos estos nodos, es importante conocer el medio donde trabajarán. A lo largo de este documento se presentan las investigaciones llevadas a cabo para el desarrollo de sensores en tres ámbitos de aplicación. En el primero de ellos, se desarrollan dispositivos multisenores para la monitorización del medio. La aplicación de las redes de sensores inalámbricas al medio natural, precisa un estudio de cómo se ven afectadas las señales, en función de la distancia, vegetación, humedad del ambiente, etc. Focalizamos nuestros desarrollos en la verificación de incendios en zonas rurales y en el control de plagas en viñedos donde la detección precoz de estos eventos genera elevados ahorros económicos. También proponemos el desarrollo de una red de collares sensores para ganado domestico, que nos ayudará a reducir y prevenir en muchos casos, los ataques de lobos y hurtos de crías. Por último, dentro de este grupo, presentamos una red permite detectar anomalía de los materiales en edificios y red de sensores que nos permite monitorizar las personas mayores o deficientes, que se mueven junto con un grupo, en una excursión o actividad. El segundo grupo de aplicaciones, hace referencia a la monitorización de espacios en entornos de interior. Para ello hemos analizado el comportamiento de las señales inalámbricas en diferentes escenarios. Los resultados, nos han permitido extraer un nuevo método de diseño de las redes inalámbricas en interiores. Nuestro método, permite definir la mejor ubicación de los dispositivos de red y nodos sensores en interiores con un ahorro en el número de sensores del 15%. Por último, se presenta el estudio sobre las comunicaciones subacuáticas basadas en las ondas electromagnéticas donde analizamos la dependencia de las comunicaciones subacuáticas en agua dulce en función de la frecuencia, temperatura, tasas de transferencia de datos y modulación. Relacionado con el medio subacuático, presentamos 2 propuestas. La primera de ellas hace referencia a la implementación de una red de sensores para granjas marinas que nos permite reducir la cantidad de residuos depositados en el lecho marino y reducir el porcentaje de comida desperdiciada. La segunda propuesta es el desarrollo de dos sensores oceanográficos que nos permitirían controlar la cantidad de comida y heces depositadas en el suelo y controlar la turbidez del agua de manera muy simple y económica Todos estos desarrollos y propuestas, han estado precedidos por un exhaustivo estudio sobre los problemas energéticos que las redes de sensores inalámbricas presentan y las técnicas que pueden emplearse, para prolongar la vida útil de la red y mejorar su estabilidad. / There are many works related to the design and development of sensor nodes which present several applications. Wireless sensor networks can facilitate and improve some aspects of our daily lives. It is easy to think that if this type of device is so beneficial to us and to our environment, its price should be relatively cheap. But we can see that this is not true. Why these devices are so expensive? Would it be possible to develop devices with the same capabilities and lower prices? How can I make my low-cost sensor nodes? This dissertation answers these questions and shows some of the many applications that sensor nodes may have. In this dissertation, we propose (and implement in some cases) the development of sensor nodes for environmental monitoring, from low-cost devices. For the implementation of a sensor node and network which joins all these nodes, it is important to know the environment where they will work. Throughout this dissertation, we present the research carried out for the development of sensors in three main application areas. In the first of these areas, we present multisensor devices developed for environmental monitoring. The application of wireless sensor networks to the environment requires a study of how signals are affected depending on the distance, vegetation, ambient humidity, etc. We focus our developments on the fire detection in rural areas and on the control of pests in vineyards where the early detection of these events generates high economic savings. We also propose the development of a sensor network which will help us to reduce and prevent wolves¿ attacks and theft in livestock. Finally, within this group, we present a network to detect material anomalies in building and a sensor network which allows us to monitor the elderly or disabled people who move along with a group on a tour or activity. The second group of applications is related to the monitoring of spaces in indoor environments. For this, we analyze the behavior of wireless signals in different scenarios. These results allowed us to extract a new method for designing wireless networks in indoor environments. Our method allows defining the best location of network devices and sensor nodes indoors saving 15% of the sensors needed. Finally, we present a study on underwater freshwater communications based on electromagnetic waves, where we analyze the dependency of underwater communications as a function of working frequency, temperature, data transfer rates and modulation. Related to underwater environment, we present two proposals. First one refers to the implementation of a sensor network for marine farms which allows us to reduce the amount of waste deposited on the seabed and reduce the percentage of wasted food. The second proposal is the development of two oceanographic sensors which allow us to control the amount of food and feces deposited in seabed and the water turbidity control in a very simple and inexpensive way. All these developments and proposals have been preceded by a comprehensive study on the energy problems in wireless sensor networks. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials for boron removal from aqueous media

Tesis por compendio / [EN] The present PhD thesis is centred in the design (using concepts of supramolecular chemistry), synthesis and characterization of different hybrid organic-inorganic materials for boron removal from aqueous media. The interaction between boron and organic groups, polyols, used in the development of these new adsorbents is also studied. In the first part of the thesis it is presented a brief review of supramolecular chemistry concepts, chemistry of boron and also the main methods for boron removal (first chapter) and, also, the objectives of this thesis (second chapter). The third chapter exposes the results obtained by using a ceramic foam as macroscopic support for active materials for boron removal. This support is previously "impregnated" with an inorganic silica mesoporous material (UVM-7) and, in a second step, it is functionalized with an organic group with high boron affinity (gluconamide). This organic group, which works as an adsorbent, remains anchored to a macroscopic support, which will facilitate the use of these materials in industrial applications. Once the material is synthetized their boron adsorption and elimination abailability in aqueous media is studied and its ulterior reutilization. The fourth chapter of the PhD thesis is focused on the preparation of low cost materials for boron adsorption from water. In first place, it is used, as inorganic scaffolding, UVM-7 material, a mesoporous silica phase with a bimodal pore system. This material has a high boron adsorption capacity after its functionalization with the polyalcohol (as it is shown in the previous chapter) nevertheless, the reagents used in the synthesis tetraethylorthosilicate, as silica source, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, as templating agent are so expensive that they induce a high cost of final materials. In this chapter is presented as an alternative another materials which are able to perform as inorganic scaffolds: UVM-11 (surfactant-free mesoporous material), two silica xerogels with pores within the mesoporous range and comercial high surface area silica fume were prepared. Once all the materials are synthetized they are functionalized with gluconamides which are the active compounds for boron adsorption. Finally, a comparative study of the boron adsorption capacities in water is carried out. Low cost materials present comparable boron removal to those of higher cost and comercially abailable materials. Finally, in the fith chapter of this PhD thesis, the adsorption mechanism of boron on the active materials (based on UVM-7 as inorganic support) is studied using solid Nuclear Magnetic Resonance measures of 11B and 13C and using techniques as Magic Angle Sppining, crossed polarization and heteronuclear polarization disacoplament. To do that, a hybrid material composed by UVM-7 matrix grafted with gluconamide is prepared and then the solid is put in contact with different boron quantities. Final solids are characterized through 13C and 11B NMR, showing the formation of boronesters between gluconamide diol groups and boron adsorbed. When low boron concentration is used, bisquelate complexes are formed (B:glucosa = 1:2), however with higher concentrations monoquelate complexes are formed (B:glucosa = 1:1). This work was carried out in collaboration with the research group of "sol-gel materials and NMR", appertaining to the center of "Chimie de la matière condensée de Paris" of the "Université Pierre et Marie Curie". / [ES] La presente tesis doctoral está dedicada al diseño (empleando conceptos de química supramolecular), síntesis y caracterización de diferentes materiales híbridos orgánico-inorgánicos para la eliminación de boro en medios acuosos. También se ha procedido a estudiar detalladamente la interacción del boro con las agrupaciones orgánicas, polialcoholes, empleadas en el desarrollo de estos nuevos adsorbentes. En la primera parte de la tesis de presenta una introducción en la que se revisa los conceptos de química supramolecular, química del boro y los principales métodos de eliminación de boro (primer capítulo) y, también, se exponen los objetivos de la tesis (segundo capítulo). Ya en el tercer capítulo se exponen los resultados obtenidos empleando una esponja cerámica como soporte macroscópico para los materiales activos frente a la eliminación de boro. Este soporte se "impregnan" previamente con un material inorgánico silíceo mesoporoso (UVM-7) y, en una fase posterior, se funcionaliza con un grupo orgánico con alta afinidad hacia el boro (gluconamida). El grupo orgánico que funcionará como adsorbente queda así anclado a un soporte de tamaño macroscópico que facilitará la aplicación de estos materiales a gran escala. Una vez preparado y caracterizado se estudió la capacidad del material para adsorber y eliminar boro de medios acuosos y su posterior reutilización. En el cuarto capítulo de la tesis doctoral se aborda la preparación de materiales adsorbentes de bajo coste económico para la eliminación de boro en medios acuosos. En primer lugar se emplea, como soporte inorgánico, UVM-7 una sílice mesoporosa con un sistema bimodal de poros. Este material tiene una capacidad de adsorción de boro muy elevada una vez funcionalizado con el correspondiente polialcohol (tal y como se expone en el capítulo anterior) sin embargo los reactivos para su síntesis tetraetilortosilicato como fuente de sílice y bromuro de cetiltrimetilamonio como agente director de estructura son muy caros con lo que el material final presenta un elevado coste. En este capítulo se presenta como alternativa otros materiales que puedan actuar como soportes inorgánicos: UVM-11, material mesoporoso que no requiere de agente director de estructura en su síntesis, dos xerogeles con poros en el rango meso y una sílice comercial nanoparticulada de elevada superficie específica. Una vez sintetizados y caracterizados los cinco soportes se funcionalizaron con gluconamidas, que son los componentes activos frente a la adsorción de boro. Finalmente, se realiza un estudio comparativo de la capacidad de eliminación de boro de los cinco materiales preparados. Los materiales de bajo coste estudiados presentan una capacidad de eliminación de boro comparable a los materiales de mayor coste y a los materiales comercialmente disponibles. Por último, en el capítulo cinco de esta tesis doctoral, se aborda el estudio del mecanismo de adsorción del boro en los materiales activos preparados (basados en UVM-7 como soporte inorgánico) mediante medidas de resonancia magnética nuclear de sólidos, tanto de 13C como de 11B empleando las técnicas de rotación en ángulo mágico, polarización cruzada, y el desacoplamiento dipolar heteronuclear. Para ello se prepara un material híbrido formado por una matriz de UVM-7 funcionalizada con gluconamidas y este sólido se pone en contacto con diferentes cantidades de boro. Los sólidos finales se caracterizan mediante RMN de 13C y de 11B, observándose la formación de boroesteres entre los grupos diol de las gluconamidas ancladas y el boro adsorbido. Cuando la concentración de boro empleada es baja se forman complejos bisquelados (B:glucosa = 1:2) mientras que a concentraciones altas empiezan a formarse complejos monoquelados (B:glucosa = 1:1). Este trabajo se llevó a cabo en colaboración con el grupo de investigación de "Materiales sol-gel y RMN", perteneciente al centro "Chimie de la matiè / [CA] La present tesi doctoral està dedicada al disseny (empleant conceptes de química supramolecular), síntesi i caracterització de diferents materials híbrids orgànico-inorgànics per a la el¿liminació de bor en medi aquòs. També s'ha precedit a estudiar detalladament la interacció del bor amb les agrupacions orgàniques, polialcohols, empreats en el desenvolupament d'aquestos nous adsorbents. A robust sustainable optimization & control strategy (RSOCS) for (fed-)batch processes towards the low-cost reduction of utilities consumption

Yes / The need for the development of clean but still profitable processes and the study of low environmental impact and economically convenient management policies for them are two challenges for the years to come. This paper tries to give a first answer to the second of these needs, limited to the area of discontinuous productions. It deals with the development of a robust methodology for the profitable and clean management of (fed-)batch units under uncertainty, which can be referred to as a robust sustainability-oriented model-based optimization & control strategy. This procedure is specifically designed to ensure elevated process performances along with low-cost utilities usage reduction in real-time, simultaneously allowing for the effect of any external perturbation. In this way, conventional offline methods for process sustainable optimization can be easily overcome since the most suitable management policy, aimed at process sustainability, can be dynamically determined and applied in any operating condition. This leads to a significant step forward with respect to the nowadays options in terms of sustainable process management, that drives towards a cleaner and more energy-efficient future. The proposed theoretical framework is validated and tested on a case study based on the well-known fed-batch version of the Williams-Otto process to demonstrate its tangible benefits. The results achieved in this case study are promising and show that the framework is very effective in case of typical process operation while it is partially effective in case of unusual/unlikely critical process disturbances. Future works will go towards the removal of this weakness and further improvement in the algorithm robustness.

An electric actuator selection aid for low cost automation

Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / Low Cost Automation (LCA) is of immense importance to industry, and even more so for small scale industries. In implementing LCA determining cost effective and efficient actuator alternatives present challenges for design engineers. Most often decisions are experiential or entirely based on manufacturer recommendations. Experience based decisions are most often biased with respect to the engineers’ knowledge. Similarly, manufacturer recommendations are restricted to their own products and are as such also biased. Either way, sub-optimum drive alternatives may sometimes be chosen. This demonstrates the need for making better informed decisions based on more than experience and what is available for use. This thesis reports the development of an electric actuator selection procedure and aid for use in the early layout design phase. It provides readily accessible information on technically viable actuator options. Experiential knowledge of experts in the field, commercial information, as well as data obtained from experimentation was used in its development. Being orientated towards LCA, the procedure has been targeted at the application of electric motors and their associated control technologies but can be extended to hydraulic, pneumatic and other actuators. In achieving a wider applicability of the selection aid, a generic set of actuator properties descriptive of most actuators was formulated. An AC drives control evaluation was conducted for developing the selection procedure and aid. It provided a means to validate some selection aid rules associated with actuator controllability. Quantitative data on speed and positioning accuracies of common AC three phase motors and their associated inverter technologies were the targeted results of the experimentation.

Cost Beneficial Solution for High Rate Data Processing

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / GSFC in keeping with the tenets of NASA has been aggressively investigating new technologies for spacecraft and ground communications and processing. The application of these technologies, together with standardized telemetry formats, make it possible to build systems that provide high-performance at low cost in a short development cycle. The High Rate Telemetry Acquisition System (HRTAS) Prototype is one such effort that has validated Goddard's push towards faster, better and cheaper. The HRTAS system architecture is based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus and VLSI Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). These ASICs perform frame synchronization, bit-transition density decoding, cyclic redundancy code (CRC) error checking, Reed-Solomon error detection/correction, data unit sorting, packet extraction, annotation and other service processing. This processing in performed at rates of up to and greater than 150 Mbps sustained using a high-end performance workstation running standard UNIX O/S, (DEC 4100 with DEC UNIX or better). ASICs are also used for the digital reception of Intermediate Frequency (IF) telemetry as well as the spacecraft command interface for commands and data simulations. To improve the efficiency of the back-end processing, the level zero processing sorting element is being developed. This will provide a complete hardware solution to extracting and sorting source data units and making these available in separate files on a remote disk system. Research is on going to extend this development to higher levels of the science data processing pipeline. The fact that level 1 and higher processing is instrument dependent; an acceleration approach utilizing ASICs is not feasible. The advent of field programmable gate array (FPGA) based computing, referred to as adaptive or reconfigurable computing, provides a processing performance close to ASIC levels while maintaining much of the programmability of traditional microprocessor based systems. This adaptive computing paradigm has been successfully demonstrated and its cost performance validated, to make it a viable technology for the level one and higher processing element for the HRTAS. Higher levels of processing are defined as the extraction of useful information from source telemetry data. This information has to be made available to the science data user in a very short period of time. This paper will describe this low cost solution for high rate data processing at level one and higher processing levels. LOW COST SUBMINIATURE TELEMETRY SPREAD SPECTRUM TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION/VALIDATION

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) plans to demonstrate subminiature telemetry (SMT) spread spectrum technology, via an upgraded prototype SMT system, to validate its cost-effectiveness for both Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial use. The goal is to develop new and/or modify current SMT instrumentation using existing production methods to provide increased capabilities at lower costs and reduced size. The transmitter is to require less than 2 cubic inches of space and have a cost goal of $500/unit "in quantity." The cost goal of a ground-based, 24-channel capable ground receiver is $4000/unit "in quantity". The SMT project as well as its schedule, flight and ground demonstrations, validation criteria and goals, and various benefits are discussed.

An adapted rehabilitation programme for a cross section of South African chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

Thesis (PhD (Sport Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The benefits of exercise training for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are well-documented. In South Africa, exercise programmes for COPD patients are limited and often expensive and inaccessible to the broader community. The purpose of this study was to assess the responses of COPD patients to an exercise programme and to determine if the same results can be obtained through a less costly programme. In the primary programme of the study, 22 subjects were subjected to 12 weeks of exercise training. Each subject underwent comprehensive pre- and post-intervention assessments, which included the measurement of overall health status by a physician, level of dyspnoea, forced expiratory lung function, exercise capacity, body mass index and health-related quality of life. Exercise sessions included aerobic and strength training exercises and involved three, hour-long exercise sessions a week. In the modified programme, 18 subjects were randomly divided into an experimental and control group. Eleven subjects were included in the experimental group and seven subjects in the control group. Subjects had to complete 32, hour-long exercise sessions in a 10-week period. The experimental group’s exercise programme was adapted so that no specialised equipment was used, while the control group exercised in a well-equipped exercise- and rehabilitation centre.
