Phetchanpheng, Souvanxay 09 December 2013 (has links)
In Laos, a country of about 6.7 million inhabitants, around 58% of the population isBuddhist1. There are an estimated 123,000 Tai Lue in Laos, mainly spread out in the north between the Phongsaly, Bokeo, Udomxay, Sayaburi, Luang Prabang, Luang Nam Tha provinces. My question is about novices’ education and knowledge transmission in the lue monastic community. I analyze the didactic relation which takes part in a novice’s identity education. In an anthropologic perspective, this research is based on the didactic system of a local network of North Laos lue monasteries. In a monastery, transmission is based on part of the textual knowledge (the explicit) and also on another part which is not determined officially (the implicit), the learning of which, (the know- how) is acquired by impregnation. With didactic supports how does the master transfer a corporal, textual and oral knowledge to his pupil? The education in some lue monasteries will be defined especially through the study of corporal learning modes, ways of doing and being. The combined action in the lue vat didactic system will be investigated. Didactically, the combined action is considered as the teacher and pupil’s cooperation in a learning acquirement.

La focalisation prosodique dans la parole interprétée en français / Prosodic highlighting in interpreted speech in French

Godement-Berline, Rémi 23 February 2018 (has links)
Prosodic highlighting refers to the distinction of a constituent through various prosodic means, especially accentuation and intonation. It is taken to fulfill several functions: marking the different types of focus, as well as emphatic functions (named here “insisting” and “expressiveness”). The main goal of this thesis is to determine whether prosodic highlighting and its functions display specific features in interpreted speech, a speaking style that can be defined as the oralization of a written text previously memorized by the speaker (typically an actor). This question is relevant for linguistics and phonetics on several counts. First, little is still known about prosodic differences between functions of prosodic highlighting. Moreover, few studies have analyzed the prosodic characteristics of interpreted speech. Finally, through their innovative protocols, the two experiments described in this thesis present a methodological contribution. A production experiment consisted in having speakers replicate spontaneous conversations in read and interpreted speech. A group of experts then annotated the occurrences of prosodic highlighting in the corpus, and assigned a function to each occurrence. A perception experiment was also led in order to compare the realization of each function independently of speaking style. Despite a relatively low agreement rate between experts (which raises several methodological and theoretical questions), our analyses reveal several important results. The frequency of occurrence of prosodic highlighting is highest in interpreted speech, followed by read speech. This confirms our prediction and suggests that interpreted speech is more suited to the study of prosodic highlighting than other speaking styles. A strong association is observed between insisting and initial secondary accent, which confirms many previous studies. However, there is almost no influence of speaking style on the realization of prosodic highlighting and its functions. We attribute this result to a lack of data and to the fact that some prosodic features were not taken into account in the analysis.

Contradictions of Neoliberal Development Interventions and Market Transition in Northern Lao PDR

Polonyi, Anna Elizabeth 24 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the trajectory and role of development within the context of transition from a command to market economy, in a northern region of the Lao PDR. It looks at how the long-term effects of development interventions have contributed to a context of regional integration where the role of foreign investment and the private sector are increasing. In particular, it examines the role of development interventions in the processes of diversification and differentiation that accompany market integration. The village of Ban Jai illustrates this process as a site where despite the failures of development projects a diversification of livelihoods have developed. The implementation of UNDP projects in Ban Jai raises questions regarding the role of international projects and suggests that rather than alleviating poverty they produce a chain of effects that contribute to the tensions that result from structural changes to the village household economy. My analysis examines the tensions produced by such shifts and how villagers negotiate their engagement with the market economy. The experience of women traders illustrates how relations of solidarity are reworked in an attempt to negotiate tensions produced through processes of market integration. As structural shifts take place with increasing economic integration, international agencies also respond in particular ways by shifting strategies. I also ask what changes shifts in strategy introduce at the local level and how this intersects with the way policies are rationalized by local officials and the UNDP. An examination of this trajectory over a period of two decades, suggests that changing strategies in development have involved a shifting role between international development organizations and the private sector. I ask what kind of context this intersection of structural shifts, policy shifts and institutional shifts produces on the ground and how such shifts are negotiated locally.

Ferre, Gaelle 05 March 2004 (has links) (PDF)

Nitrogen Uptake by Vegetation in the Wakkerstroom Wetland, South Africa

Dufbäck, Emma January 2019 (has links)
The lack of proper wastewater treatment inhibits the social and economic development in many communities. The South African town Wakkerstroom is an example where wastewater is first treated before it is released. Due to the lack of technical expertise and funding to manage the sewage disposal system, a large part of the wastewater goes directly, without any treatment, into a stream feeding the Wakkerstroom wetland. The wetland purifies the wastewater and provides clean water downstream, thus is indispensable for its detoxification capacity. One relatively cheap method to determine the absorption capacity of a wetland with respect to nitrogen loading is to investigate the nitrogen uptake by the wetland vegetation. In this study, the nitrogen uptake of the vegetation in the Wakkerstroom wetland during the growing seasons between the years 2000-2018 was investigated by using harvested biomass and its nitrogen content as a proxy. The interannual variability of Net Primary Production (NPP) was calculated using a Light Use Efficiency (LUE) model for the period 2000-2018. The NPP derived with LUE-modelling was compared to NPP based on an end-of season harvest of biomass in March 2019. The nitrogen content and carbon and nitrogen (C:N) ratio were determined in the harvested biomass by carbon and nitrogen content analysis. The annual nitrogen uptake of the growing seasons between the years 2000-2018 was subsequently determined by multiplying the calculated NPP by the fraction of nitrogen found in the harvested material. The NPPtot based on harvested biomass (NPPharvest) towards the end of the growing season 2018/2019 was estimated to be 2.01 kg‧m-2‧season-1. The NPPtot calculated from LUE modelling (NPPLUE) varied between 0.49-1.64 kg‧m-2 for the growing seasons between 2000-2018. NPPharvest was between 1.2-4 times higher compared to NPPLUE, probably due to overestimation of NPPharvest because of biomass sampling of more than one-year production, or underestimation of NPPLUE due to a low maximum radiation conversion efficiency factor, εmax. The community mean nitrogen (N) content found in the biomass harvested aboveground was 1.29 % for the Phragmites community and 1.00 % for the Typha community. The nitrogen uptake of the vegetation was estimated to vary between 6.10-20.5 g N∙m-2 per growing season between the years 2000-2018.

Évaluation de la parole dysarthrique : Apport du traitement automatique de la parole face à l’expertise humaine / Evaluation of deviant zones in pathological speech : contribution of the automatic speech processing against the Human expertise

Laaridh, Imed 17 February 2017 (has links)
Dysarthria is a speech disorder resulting from neurological impairments of the speechmotor control. It can be caused by different pathologies (Parkinson’s disease, AmyotrophicLateral Sclerosis - ALS, etc.) and affects different levels of speech production (respiratory, laryngeal and supra-laryngeal). The majority of research work dedicated tothe study of dysarthric speech relies on perceptual analyses. The most known study, byF. L. Darley in 1969, led to the organization and the classification of dysarthria within 6classes (completed with 2 additional classes in 2005).Nowadays, perceptual evaluation is still the most used method in clinical practicefor the diagnosis and the therapeutic monitoring of patients. However, this method isknown to be subjective, non reproductive and time-consuming. These limitations makeit inadequate for the evaluation of large corpora (in case of phonetic studies) or forthe follow-up of the progression of the condition of dysarthric patients. In order toovercome these limitations, professionals have been expressing their need of objectivemethods for the evaluation of disordered speech and automatic speech processing hasbeen early seen as a potential solution. The work presented in this document falls within this framework and studies thecontributions that these tools can have in the evaluation of dysarthric, and more generallypathological speech. In this work, an automatic approach for the detection of abnormal phones in dysarthricspeech is proposed and its behavior is analyzed on different speech corpora containingdifferent pathologies, dysarthric classes, dysarthria severity levels and speechstyles (read and spontaneous speech). Unlike the majority of the automatic methodsproposed in the literature that provide a global evaluation of the speech on generalitems such as dysarthria severity, intelligibility, etc., our proposed method focuses onthe phone level aiming to achieve a better characterization of dysarthria effects and toprovide a precise and useful feedback to the potential users (clinicians, phoneticians, patients). This method consists on two essential phases : (1) an automatic phone alignmentof the speech (2) an automatic classification of the resulting phones in two classes :normal and abnormal phones. When compared to an annotation of phone anomalies provided by a human expertconsidered to be the ”gold standard“, the approach showed encouraging results andproved to be able to detect anomalies on the phone level. The approach was also able to capture the evolution of the severity of the dysarthria suggesting a potential relevanceand use in the longitudinal follow-up of dysarthric patients or for the automatic predictionof their intelligibility or the severity of their dysarthria. Also, the automatic phone alignment precision was found to be dependent on the severity, the pathology, the class of the dysarthria and the phonetic category of each phone.Furthermore, the speech style was found to have an interesting effect on the behaviorsof both automatic phone alignment and anomaly detection. Finally, the results of an evaluation campaign conducted by a jury of experts on theannotations provided by the proposed approach are presented and discussed in orderto draw a panel of the strengths and limitations of the system.
