Serra Bigas, Elvira 04 March 2004 (has links)
The sewage sludge is produced by urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants. The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally sensitive problem growing world-wide. In recent years, sewage sludge is being generated in ever increasing amounts and meanwhile environmentally quality standards are becoming more stringent. Furthermore, with some traditional disposal routes coming under pressure and others being phased out, it is necessary to seek cost-effective and innovate solutions to the problem incurred by sewage sludge disposal. Sewage sludge is carbonaceous in nature and rich in organic materials. Hence it has the potential to be converted into a useful carbonaceous adsorbent material. This conversion could offer the combined benefits of reducing the volume of sewage sludge and producing a valuable adsorbent with lower cost than commercial activated carbons. At the moment, the high temperature treatments have been show the feasibility of the conversion of sewage sludge in an activated carbon. As alternative to these high temperature treatments, a novel way of carbonaceous adsorbent preparation was attempted combining microwaves heating and the addition of chemical compounds. The possibility of obtaining a carbonaceous adsorbent material from surplus biological sludge has been investigated. This present work analyze the treatment of the sewage sludge using microwave heating and the addition of a chemical reagent (H2SO4), and the applications of the sludge based microwave treated adsorbent to improving the quality of the wastewater.Operational parameters such as the amount of H2SO4 added, the level power of microwave oven and the processing time were modified to ascertain their influence on the quality of carbonaceous adsorbent obtained. Once determined the quality of the different carbonaceous adsorbent obtained, these adsorbents were employed for dye and metal removal in liquid phase. The results obtained were compared with the adsorption capacity of a sludge based activated carbon and a commercial activated carbon.

Biological effects of GSM mobile phone microwave radiation: an investigation of gene expression

Blood, Alan, Physics, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
There is evidence that athermal radiofrequency radiation can alter Heat Shock Protein (HSP) expression or protein phosphorylation, or alter MAP kinase signalling. Effects of long-term exposure in brain tissue due to repeated HSP perturbation (eg an inhibition of apoptosis) have been hypothesised (French et al, 2001). This study aimed to investigate the RNA expression profile (12,000 genes) and HSP family protein expression levels after either acute 1-hour or chronic 4-day intermittent exposures to simulated GSM radiation in a human primary fibroblast model. The results found minimal or no effects of GSM. Flasks were exposed to 900 MHz (217 Hz modulation) at 0.18 W/kg SAR within a Transverse Electromagnetic Mode chamber (TEM cell). Cultures rested for 2 hours before exposures. Affymetrix U95A microarray analysis of a single pilot set of experiments showed that about 40 genes were reported as upregulated &gt=2.5 fold in each condition. There was no evidence of altered expression of any MAPK-associated genes. Target genes reported in both conditions (CBFA2T1, ZNF148, ITGA1), and genes altered in one condition (CCS, PLEC1, BIRC5), and marginally altered HSP72 were selected for PCR analysis. No other members of the HSP family were altered. In three replicate experiments assayed by real-time PCR, six genes were either unchanged or showed randomly variable expression. However HSP72 RNA showed possible consistent slight upregulation of 1.37 +/- 0.21 in the chronic condition. Western immunoblots of HSP-60, -70, -72 and -V90 proteins showed no significant changes 5 hours after exposure. In preliminary studies using a serum starvation protocol, ERK-1 phosphorylation was unaltered after 5 or 30 minutes GSM (single experiments). When flasks were transiently cooled, ERK-1 phosphorylation was increased 20 minutes later, indicating a source of artefact in some protocols. An inflammatory challenge experiment with a low-dose of the cytokine IL-1???? found that acute GSM exposure post-challenge inhibited NF????B-mediated GRO???? induction by 1.5 fold (2 experiments). Preconditioning with mild heat induces transient inhibition of both NF????B signalling and apoptosis. Other studies indicate that EMF exposures similarly evoke cytoprotection. It is suggested that GSM evoked cytoprotective signalling in this inflammatory model.

. / The existent relationship between the methods of processing of the acrylic resins and the thickness of dentures bases resin, as well as the association with the size and form of the maxillary arch, it has been a subject quite discussed with regard to possible alterations in the teeth positioning and maxillary complete denture postdamming. So that, the aim of the study was to evaluate the dental movement that it happens during the processing of maxillary complete dentures with three base thickness different, front of two inclusion methods and submitted to the microwaves polymerization. Forty two (42) samples were randomly divided in 6 groups of 7 samples each, respecting, evidently, the base thickness (1,25 mm - 2,50 mm - 3,75 mm) and the type in flask investment (silicone and plaster stone). Points were demarcated on the artificial teeth to allow the measurement of the samples through the AutoCad software. The averages difference of the segments between the Ab ss tt rr a cc tt waxed model and deflasked of each group was submitted to it analysis of variance (ANOVA á=0,05) and Tukey test. In agreement with the obtained results it can be conclusion that: all the processing techniques together with the different thickness of complete denture base evaluated, presented alteration in the artificial teeth positionig after the processing. The silicone flasking technique was that presented the largest dimensional alterations, independently of the thickness. In the segments analysis, there was a larger alteration of the segments A/B/C (larger Triangle) regarding the segments D/E/F (smaller Triangle).

Basso, Michael Frederico Manzolli. January 2009 (has links)
However, the microwave disinfection cycles may affect the dimensional stability of denture bases. Therefore, the purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of two microwave disinfection protocols on the dimensional stability of complete dentures, analyzing the linear dimensional stability, the percent occlusal force obtained from centric occlusal contacts and the clinical events. Complete dentures were constructed for forty totally edentulous patients. All dentures were conventionally processed with heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Lucitone 550). After insertion of complete dentures, it was expected 30 days to submit the dentures to the experimental conditions as follows: Group 1 (G1)- 20 patients had the maxillary complete dentures submitted to microwave disinfection (650 W/ 3 minutes), once a week, for four weeks. Group 2 (G2)- 20 patients had the maxillary complete dentures submitted to microwave disinfection (650 W/ 3 minutes), three times a week, for four weeks. To evaluate the linear dimensional stability, measurements were taken across four reference points (first premolars and second molars bilaterally) before of first microwave disinfection (baseline) and after each week of disinfection. Software was used to measure distances between reference points from standardized photographs. Mediolateral and anteroposterior dimensions and area between reference points were calculated. The dimensional data obtained were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey test and t test (_ = .05). To evaluate the percent occlusal force obtained from centric occlusal contacts, the T-Scan III system was used. The centric occlusal contacts were measured, before of first microwave disinfection (baseline) and after each week of disinfection, using pressure-sensitive sheets and studied in T-Scan software. Besides this industry use, researches applied to cancer cells treatment, demonstrates that the microwave heating is more effective than regular procedures, such as, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, because it is a directional action and does not presents the same side effects amount. This work aims to develop a numeric model using FDTD in order relate the microwave spread, with the dielectric material heating on industry applications, standing as a base to future development of a software, which can study the microwave effects on these applications. Initially the basic issues involving the propagation of electromagnetic waves are discussed, as well as the equation that govern it. Then the mathematical treatment is performed, in order to related the known parameters to those obtained on the simulation. Lastly, experiments based in the simulated medium were performed, for the purpose of verify the error presented on the developed model. Those experiments allowed to conclude that the results numerically given, serve as a reference to situations where high precision is not necessary on the final temperature of the dielectric medium / O aquecimento por micro-ondas é amplamente utilizado nas indústrias, para o tratamento de minérios e secagem de madeira, e na produção de alimentos.

Synthèse chimique d’oligosaccharides de la zone de liaison des protéoglycanes et nouvelles méthodes d’activation pour l’obtention de sucres sulfatés / Synthesis of oligosaccharides of the linkage region of proteoglycans and new activation methods for sulfated saccharides

Ledru, Hélène 28 November 2017 (has links)
Proteoglycans are macromolecules composed of glycosaminoglycans chains (GAGs) covalently linked to a core protein. GAGs are implicated in many biological processes, such as cells growth and proliferation, and they are also involved in several diseases including osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and cancers. Their biosynthesis involves the action of O-glycosyltransferases and starts with the formation of a tetrasaccharidic linkage region. This GAGs linkage region initiates the formation of two types of GAGs chains, heparin/heparan sulfates with the action of EXTL3 and chondroitin sulfates/dermatan sulfates with the action of CSGalNAcT-1. In this biosynthesis, the linkage region may be sulfated, but the role of these sulfations is still poorly understood. The objective of this work was to synthetize disaccharides of the linkage region and transfer trisaccharides, with the first aminosugar of the GAGs chains, variously monosulfated or not, in order to study the role of sulfations on the bifurcation enzymes.Different activation methods, microwaves and flow chemistry, were also tested to sulfate mono-, di- and trisaccharides.

Hybridation de méthodes numériques pour l'étude de la susceptibilité électromagnétique de circuits planaires / Hybridization of numerical methods to study electromagnetic susceptibility of planar circuits

Girard, Caroline 18 December 2014 (has links)
Electromagnetic susceptibility study of electronic circuits requires the use of a simulation tool which is fast, accurate and flexible enough to incorporate the latest technological innovations. The Wave Concept Iterative Procedure (WCIP) initially proposed by H. Baudrand is particularly adapted for numerical modeling of multilayered circuits with multilevel metallization. For this kind of circuits, it turns out to be one of the methods that uses the smallest number of unknowns to reach a given accuracy. However, the WCIP is not appropriate for inhomogeneous dielectric substrates and metallized via holes. The aim of this PhD thesis is to overcome these limitations coupling the WCIP with volume numerical methods. First, hybridization is carried out with the Frequency Domain Transmission Line Matrix (denoted FDTLM) assuming matching meshes at the interface between computational domains of both methods. Subsequently, the coupling with a finite element technique like a Hybridized Discontinuous Galerkin (denoted DG) method is considered to achieve the objectives of accuracy and speed because DG brings flexibility in the discretization. Indeed, it is a nonconforming finite element method which allows in particular changing the polynomial approximation order from one element to another. Therefore, a new hybrid method is developed coupling the WCIP with volume numerical methods which offer more flexibility for dealing with complex environments. Finally, a domain decomposition solution strategy is also discussed at the end of the manuscript.

Modificação química do poli(cloreto de vinila) com nucleófilos nitrogenados assistida por micro-ondas / Chemical modification of poly(vinyl chloride) with nitrogen nucleophiles assisted by microwave irradiation

Mauro Vinícius Almeida da Silva 28 February 2013 (has links)
In this work we had performed nucleophilic substitution reactions (Sn2) of some chlorine atoms in commercial samples of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC), nitrile groups and also by azide groups, using both conventional thermal heating and microwave irradiation (MW).Nitrile and azide groups were replaced in the matrix at diverse levels (10% and 20%). The reactions of PVC with azide were effective, reaching a percentage derivatization very near to the desired values. In the study with the nitrile although we have not obtained the expected results. The substituted azido copolymers were modified with propargilato acetate, under catalysis of copper iodide (CuI) to obtain triazole heterocyclic type. All copolymers were labeled by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nitrogen contents were determined by corporate elemental analysis (EA). Through analysis of the data obtained, it was verified that the use of microwave irradiation in comparison to conventional heating is a more selective process and reduces significantly reaction times

Etude fondamentale des effets liés aux agressions micro-ondes de fortes puissances et du chaos sur l’électronique (composants, circuits et systèmes) / Fundamental study of effects induced by high power microwaves and chaos on electronics (components, circuits and systems)

Caudron, François 15 February 2012 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the effects associated with HPM and Chaos aggressions on electronics. After a theoretical and experimental study of the electromagnetic coupling between two ports of 50 Ω impedance in a complex cavity, a new model based on Babinet principle is proposed to extend the study to the case of any radiation impedances. The impact of intentional EM attacks on the "front end" receiver circuits such as limiters at outside the antennas bandwidth was also studied and validated on several types of antennas for 2.45 GHz an X-band applications. The results show that for certain conditions, it is possible that EM aggression generates chaotic signals in the front end receivers. Finally, two chaotic sources have been studied and characterized. The opportunity to enhance their spectrum is also proposed.

Murilo Hiroaki Seko 05 February 2013 (has links)
In this work, multi-band microwave planar antennas for application in mobile terminals of wireless communication systems were developed. A study on microwave planar antennas was performed with emphasis on design techniques that enable their operation in wide bands and multiple bands. From the knowledge gained from this study, antenna configurations for mobile terminals of current mobile telephony, WLAN and WPAN systems, which have experienced in recent years great popularity worldwide, were proposed. By means of a design procedure aided by computer electromagnetic simulation, the proposed antenna configurations were analyzed and optimized in order to meet the design specifications established for operation in the afore mentioned systems. The performance that can be obtained with these antenna configurations depends on their several geometric parameters, resulting in design flexibility for obtaining the desired operation bands. Prototypes of the designed antennas were fabricated and characterized to validate the proposed antenna configurations and the design procedure employed. Four antennas were developed for operation in mobile telephony, WLAN and WPAN systems employed in Brazil, Europe and USA: a tri-band planar inverted-F antenna with novel configuration for operation in GSM, DCS and PCS standard bands; a penta-band planar inverted-F antenna with novel configuration for operation in GSM, DCS, PCS and UMTS standard bands and 2,400 MHz ISM band; two quad-band antennas, one of them planar inverted-F and the other printed monopole with novel configuration, for operation in 2,400 MHz and 5,800 MHz ISM bands and 5,200 MHz and 5,600 MHz bands. The experimental results from the fabricated prototypes exhibited, in general, good agreement with the results provided by simulation and showed that the developed antennas met the specifications established for them. By means of both simulation and experimental results, the performance of the developed antennas could be verified, and the effectiveness of the design procedure adopted was demonstrated.
